    my favourite thing about the spindash is how you can kinda drift with it if you hold circle to slide and then just press the bumper and directions, it feels super good to do at high speeds

    Now I can’t get used to the momentum they added in this game. Cyberspace is completely different now and fun, and the challenges are great. This was totally worth the wait.

    They added momentum.
    That’s all. Everything else is just a bonus to me. Already enjoyed the game, but this one change makes it so much more enjoyable!

    God, it's so heartwarming seeing Sonic Team go this far. It really does make you think how easily they could've abandoned Frontiers and blindly try something new, disregarding all complaints and critics. I'm so happy that Sonic Team are finally listening to feedback without making such drastic changes to the series (like giving Shadow a gun and making characters "mildly" swear just because fans wanted it). I'm also somewhat proud of SEGA for seemingly allowing Sonic Team the freedom to update Frontiers. I'd legit think SEGA would be the last company to wanna approve of such a move for their development team. If anything, I'd expect them to force Sonic Team to abandon Frontiers faster and work on the next big game. Glad to see that wasn't the case.
    Also, Sam's little rant about the future of Sonic at the end really speaks volumes to me. It feels good seeing Sonic getting more proper love and care from his own creators and not just the fans for once. It feels good knowing that Sonic has a chance to be consistently good again instead of leaving us doubtful and worried all the time. Frontiers may not be a perfect Sonic game (or a perfect open world/zone game or a game period from a polish/content stand point) but updates like this show that Sonic Team really do wanna try to make the series as good as it can be!

    One thing that's important to highlight is the *Jump Deceleration* slider and the *Maintain boost during a jump* option.
    With these alone (no spindash required) you can just boost and jump and go *_flying,_* in just the way I wished I could when the game came out.
    Like you can seriously fly across the map with those options. Oh, and make sure you turn Jump Decel down, not up.

      @@robertlauncher Personally I'd say turn Jump Deceleration all the way down, doing so gives you the most forward movement, allowing you to cross *_massive_* gaps.
      There's a separate Deceleration slider, but that one is for ground movement only. That one's up to you, turning it down doesn't complement gameplay too much imo. Kinda cool though.
      Boost while Jumping is a simple toggle at the bottom, no slider.

      Facts. Jump deceleration is an amazing addition. I even turned off normal deceleration so I can suffer more in platforming 😀

      Yooooooo i never knew that i was playing with maintain boost during jumo option and thought it felt great but when i turned jump deceleration down it enhanced my gameplay experience x10 !!!!! They really brought our boy back !!! Thanks for the tip !

    While it sucks to go through a bit to unlock the spin dash it is indeed op in terms of its usage and probably want people to play the game it was meant to be.

      Just change the momentum physics with the new settings in the setting menu bro you can still do things u couldn't before with sonics movement with them :) spin dash is an end game reward cause it's very broken

    Turns out if you play on easy mode the points required for S ranked is lowered for the action chains. Didn't think it was the case until i actually looked at the video of people playing on hard mode needing to get like 700,000 points instead of 200,000
    But besides that the spindash has been insanely fun to play with

      Beating guardians with 256x multiplier gives a *ton* of score, several ranks on hard mode with one guardian.

    The deceleration stuff changes how momentum works even without the spin dash tho
    You can boost off ramps and launch into the sky as well

    I think this game is like a laboratory that they are trying things and experimenting with the fans feedback. I think the next open-zone game that will definitely be a good game without any downsides because they will put everything they learned with Frontiers into it. Maybe they added the spin dash as an unlockable because it breaks the game a little bit, because the plataforming challenges were not designed with the spin dash in mind. But, if in the next game they designed it with this move in mind and adding more verticality, it could be a standard Sonic move

    I completely agree with you on pretty much all fronts here. I also just today found out that if you slide into a spin-dash, Sonic does a drift which makes tight corners in Cyberspace a lot more doable.
    What a transformative update! I'm with you when it comes to the finale being all that's really needed to completely knock it out of the park.
    Very very promising stuff.

    This update is nutty in the best way. They even added an option to toggle the boost filter for cyberspace stages. Like, why? They didn't have to? But they just decided to flex anyway and I love it.

    Only thing that bugged me for the longest time was the spin dash being unlockable instead of being a normal move. Though it makes sense given how overpowered it is

    My God, Sam. This is probably one of the best videos you've ever made. Not only because you covered update 2 in full extent, but you showed that these new changes are really worth checking out.     Can’t wait to give this a play, the spin dash definitely needs to come back especially they make a frontiers sequel or if any new open world game stuff is done for sonic, which most likely will be. New challenges and Koco are neat. Can’t wait for update 3

    Back when the game came out, I always tried to boost jump off of inclines and even on flat ground but the momentum from my boost didn’t carry into my jump and it always felt wrong to me because I would do this in every other Sonic game ever, even the boost games because those had momentum physics in them. Now it isn’t perfect but it’s the step in the right direction, it feels good. Thank you SonicTeam

    I didn't really expect much from the Spin Dash, when it was announced. I honestly just expected it to be like the Drop Dash, but easier to use. I'm so glad that isn't the case! This move feels fantastic to use, I really wish it had been here from the start! Movement & exploration options are opened up tenfold with these new changes, it's incredible! I still think there's room for even more freedom (I hate how some inclines just arbitrarily won't allow you to go up them, no matter how fast you're going & the parkour could be way more open), but just the addition of the Spin Dash & the deceleration sliders has improved the movement substantially. And it doesn't just replace the boost, despite being very similar at a glance. The fact that running makes you stick to the ground & rolling launches you off slopes means there is actually a reason to use one over the other, depending on what you want to achieve

    Once I saw an incline that led to a music note (I COULDNT USE THE DOUBLE STOMP TO GET THERE CUZ IT WAS TOO FAR) and tried to use my momentum from spamming the spin dash I knew the next update WILL be something special.

    I, myself, yesterday, FINALLY acquired the spindash.
    At first, I was highly annoyed that you needed to do all the Action Chain Challenges for the Spindash, but after seeing this review, and earning it and trying it out, myself, I'm proud to say that in the end, it was WORTH IT!
    Fun fact: I also learned you can yse Cyloop with the spindash. Hell, even just casually rolling, too.
    Fun fact 2: They also fixed photo mode for underground areas, too, as I tested it out on Ares Island.
    And it made traveling, and combat even MORE fun!!! And I absolutely enjoyed the update. Ngl, I'm debating wether or not to turn off the birthday decorations, because I'm enjoying them. Tho, it's strange to see Sonic and his friends wearing them, especially during emotional scenes. But again, I enjoy it.
    I'm so fucking happy with how this update came out, and this is making me look forward to Update 3 EVEN MORE. I cannot wait to see what they do with the final boss, and this new story. Gives me another reason to keep replaying Frontiers, because I enjoy it (also, because my game data from the PS4 edition couldn't be recovered, I had to play the main story all over again. And I also gotta do Cyberspace Challenges and Battle Rush again-)
    But I'm gonna keep enjoying update 2, and I look forward to what Kishimoto and the crew have cooking for Update 3 soon.

    Something I really like about this new update is the fact that now jumping while boosting doesn't kill your momentum and you can make Sonic to NOT stop on a dime anymore. It's such a simple change, and yet it's suprisingly very game changing in my opinion

    The only thing that sucks about this update is that you now have to collect all memory tokens on the islands to count for 💯 and it is a slog to do on ares and chaos island especially.

    Oh man, Frontiers is just getting better and better!
    And it wasn't some instant 180 of quality there were some flaws present here, but we're seeing them being addressed.
    It warms my heart to see how far Sonic has come from the Dark Age.
    If there's still any doubt, then we can rest easy knowing Sonic is back.

    Sonic frontiers is already, by far, my best 3d Sonic game, and although it's not the best open world I (or anyone) played, it'll always have a special place in my heart for it accomplished something no other open world game could. What you do the most in an open world game, like 80% of your playthrough will be just that, is being FUN for the first time in the history of open world games: Moving around... And i haven't even tried the dlc yet!

    Fun fact: if you're holding the left trigger in the air and you do a stomp while still holding the left trigger, Sonic will stomp like normal, but once he hits the ground he'll immediately launch into a spindash. I feel like the speedrun potential for that is gonna be insane

    So far from what I played this update is great Sonic’s birthday is great they went all out with it. The open zone challenge is interesting I haven’t gotten all S ranks yet. And the new koco was not what I expected and it’s cool.

    I'm gonna say it... I actually kinda liked the final boss fight. Then again, my roots as a long time gamer started with an old shooter I hold near and dear to me, so lots of bias there... However, despite that, I'm glad that "THE END" is going to get reworked (or, at least, that's the speculation). Improvements on something I already like is almost as good as improvement on something that isn't as well received.
    Here's to the future and to Frontiers Update 3!

    That was a great update with all of this stuff after Sonic Team listened to us. I cannot wait to the final update when it comes out.
    Btw, you forgot to mention that you can now disable the BGM when boosting through Cyber Space stages.

    You wouldn't believe the looks of pure shock and giddy childish excitement I had the first time I revved the spindash in this game. We've waited so long and they did it so right!
    It's so cool how the camera zooms in and you really get that feeling of being ready to just launch. It's also really cool that you can rev it while moving, makes it feel so good. And while the constant launching into the air from any difference in elevation can be kinda annoying, I think it actually helps keep the Boost relevant; you can Boost uphill to avoid getting launched and Spindash downhill for insane speed.
    It's kinda funny that you can just hold L2 now to curl. Looks really funny when you aren't moving or going very slow.

    You don't get the Crown for collectiong all new Koco. You have to clear everything: All memory tokens, all fish, all side stories, beated all guardians, collected all new Kocos and beating all open zone challenges to get the reward. You can see your stand while you open the map and press the button vor switching islands.

    I really really really really hope that sonic team does not mess it up in the future. They’ve gained so much goodwill over the past few years with the movie, the Netflix show and most recently frontiers which is ongoing thanks to the dlc. We’ve been here before…sonic team figures out 3d sonic, maintains it for a while and then throws it all away for no reason. I really hope that’s not the case ever again

    it feels so good to be able to jump and keep my speed. that was one of the two things i wanted mods for (with the other being the combat, which isn't getting fixed by an update).

    If anyone is having trouble with the Action Chain challenges, 1: change the difficulty to easy 2: Stomp on enemies, try to spam tricks mid air off of an incline, go through rainbow rings and use zip lines, These are the best ways (that I found ) to get a ton of points.

    I'm happy the Spindash is here, it's faster than normal boost based on the speedometer, it has momentum physics, and it finally makes 2d segments fast

    One thing I've noticed about the spin dash is that Sonic has some form of invincibility during it. In a 2D section, I used the spin dash, and for some reason phases through spikes that were on the platform.

    The fact that they are using the ability to update already shipped games to address fixes that other developers would have made you pay by putting them in a brand new €60 product is mind-blowing.
    No money and no 4 year gap. Only listening to the community and providing improvements made with heart ❤
    Bravo Sonic Team
    And thinking that the sequel can start by having all of the stuff that have already been fixed... Well, I'm impressed

    For NG+ challenge, level 1 playthrough, 100% it for spindash and skills, use THAT clear data.
    Level 1, with all your skills and SD, on Hard.
    Just like with Battle Rush, its as challenging as you want it to be.
    Oh also they added ghost sonics to the Cross Slash, which is such a small detail, but makes it look less silly. [Also Birthday mode's sky is cool if you look at the clouds. ;) ]

    If you want to beat the challenges quickly, just switch to easy mode. The score multiplier is easier to max

    The ending was great if all you care about was amazing super sonic cutscene I was personally never bothered about it but if you wanted gameplay Yh it’s not great

    I’d like extreme mode to be rebalanced to be more akin to the Kingdom Hearts series’ Critical mode, really high enemy stats and new enemy tactics that demand you to be smarter because stats are still scaled in your favor, you just have to be more reflexive. Maybe make it so all defense is ignored and you lose all rings à la traditional Sonic gameplay in one hit and then you can die from one hit but as an extra caveat the rings vanish faster.

      Perfectly explained on how I wish they'd do extreme mode as well!
      Critical in KH gets so much more fun the more you understand the combat, the payoff is insane and I wish for Sonic Frontier to tap into it as well!

    Personally I liked a lot of the new additions; the spin dash was very fun and was definitely worth all the effort needed to unlock it, the combo challenges are enjoyable once you get used to them, and some of the koco challenges are very fun.
    My only issue with what I've played so far is that some of the koco challenges are WAY too hard/cumbersome/confusing. I've only finished all the challenges on Kronos, as well as a few on Ares and Chaos, but there were definitely some absolutely stupid challenges thrown in there.
    Like there was one giant floating puzzle tower, and to progress you need to awkwardly platform along its narrow edges while finding switches and rings to unlock new sections. It just made no sense design wise, especially the part about having to collect rings to move the puzzle along, since collectable items are often not used in that way.
    I also really hated that platforming challenge near the waterfall on Kronos, the camera angles and tight wall-climbing sections threw me off.
    Other than a couple of those platforming sections though, I thought the update was very solid overall.

      With the Koco challenges, I did like how they challenged me in ways they never have before, but at the same time some of them ended up being a little weird or unintuitive because of it, such as the "grab the rings" tower in Kronos you mentioned

      The only one that really annoyed me was the one by Portal 1-7 on Kronos. I had no idea where I was going and what triggered the platform changes until I looked it up. The rest of them ranged from decent to really fun.

      @@SilverSpireZ Yeah, I wrote this when I hadn't really played through all of the challenges; by this point, I had mostly focused on Kronos' challenges and got frustrated with a couple of the ones that I played (floating puzzle tower with weird triggers, sidestep section that was fairly buggy and awkward, and the spike-ball wall-run puzzle near the waterfall). Most other challenges were actually really fun, I agree, I just hadn't experienced them all yet.

    Legit I didnt think the birthday aspect of this would be as cool as it is but that reskin of the game is literally why im coming back to this game after beating update 1's main content (doing extreme mode playthrough after finishing update 2 content since update 3 is just a new story so far)
    I saw all the cute changes like springs being cupcakes and the rings being hearts and stars, legit fell a little in love with all the changes
    Dont get me wrong, I love the aesthetic for frontiers, even if its a little out of place for sonic as many may claim but it turned out to be a pretty functional and beautiful game even despite only 3 unique biomes
    But seeing that every time without some new essence gets boring like with any game in this day and age for me, aside from those games that give you nostalgia like the old lego console games for me, those dont need new bells and whistles to still be fun to play...
    ....So thats why I like the birthday update, gives the world a bit of a shoe shine and makes it look a bit more interesting to go through even if its the exact same stuff youve done already
    Spindash looks broken but about using it in new game + I thought I heard that you could not so I guess I will find out myself if you can, or if enough people who see this comment confirm one way or the other
    Funny thing is if the boost allowed for what the spindash does allow and there was some more momentum like in adventure, NO ONE would be asking for the spindash. Idk if allowing boost to be an attack move like it normally is would keep people from wanting a spindash, but i see the appeal for wanting spindash anyway, and thankfully sonic team has finally managed to incorporate BOTH IN ONE GAME. Fans are definitely eating well despite the fact our expectations as a whole may never be fully met, even with the games many rank higher than this one
    Also about the light dash it seems like you are not locked in place even in the air after using it, you can, like, keep your speed a bit and even gain some from the dash before youre capped to normal running speed
    updated part about score attack but its still hard if youre relying a lot on using the existing platforming segments after youve built up your multiplier, enemies help but only as quickly and as frequently as you encounter them. would recommend having controls that dont feel too tight because collecting those spheres is precise however turn jump decel off, that helps with covering ground
    The new koco increasing boost is cool but definitely a stolen idea if not completely in its implementation
    Finally, from what I have seen it appears all the new soundbytes are just soundtracks from frontiers, specifically the islands...
    Also you still CANT USE THE JUKEBOX SONGS WHEN FIGHTING GUARDIAN BOSSES WHYYY
    You still are forced to listen to their songs as they break the immersion and feel of the song youre listening to at the moment its SO ANNOYING
    Lastly I appreciate the thanks you gave sonic team, for them to spend 5-6 years on this game and another year to just effortlessly add changes to this game based on feedback, like they went through hell and back hearing their games like forces were bad or mediocre like lost world and other such games to make THIS! and superstars! Im glad you and other fans held through to see this seemingly second or third golden age of games for this funny blue rat

    This game has proved something. Sonic team needs more budget and time. While the game was good if def needed more budget. But at this ganes releaced everyone said they didnt hate the game but it was unfinished. My guess is thay it wasnt sonic team. it was sega. there under budget and on time mindset has absolutely killed past sonic games with ounces of potental. Like 06! So i beg sega. Give sonic team more money for the next game. They could make a top tear 3d platformer that. Might not win game of the year but with the team they have now and alot more time and funds. Could at least get a nomination

    The best way to do the open zone challenge is to turn on easy mode, it lowers the point requirement if you just want the spindash and dont care about score

    Some people are angry about the spin dash being an unlockable but I think it being so overpowered, it becomes a great late-game reward. The game is definitely not built around it, so it should be earned, otherwise it will snap the entire game in half.

    Spindash is basically the new dropdash. I think they meant for the dropdash to be more of an attack move instead of a transversal move. I can kind of see that now with the spindash, but that is just my opinion.

    Hopefully someone puts out a mod that unlocks the spin dash from the start. If it was a completely new move to the series then I’d be ok with it being unlockable, but not the spin dash lol

    The Spindash is really fun to use, it was definitely worth it imo. For the challenges I barely fought any enemies because I thought it'd waste more time lol.

      Same. I just went through as many of the memory token challenges as I could in that time. If anything, the 2D sections on Chaos Island racked up points the quickest for me.
