In the cooler's defense, if I'm understanding correctly, you put it in full sun, on the ground, in south Florida with nearly half the contents not pre-chilled, and a ice to contents ratio of maybe 1:1 when Rtic recommends 2:1 ice to contents. I don't think anyone can reasonable expect to get the "up to" ice rentention number in those conditions. That said, while you seem slightly disappointed, you're not ragging on it for that performance. I'm sure if you redid that test with the proper ice to contents ratio, pre-chilled all the drinks, and tried storing it in the shade (even in South Florida), you'd get a little closer to the 5 days of ice retention. Thanks for the video. Still helpful to see the real world performance of how MOST people will probably use this thing (against best case recommendations).
Yeah I tried to show it how we usually use it. Usually not all of our drinks are pre chilled and we try to keep it in the shade but as the day goes and the sun moves that doesn’t always happen. So I tried to simulate as best as I could a real life test of how it would work for us. I love the cooler and I love Rtic. And I use it a lot.
If you want the ice to last over 36 hours in any regular cooler, freeze at least 4-5 quarts of water in small containers, then drop those big chunks of ice into a the cooler and add a 20 lb bag of ice. The chunks of ice will do the trick.
I wonder if it was because your 52 ultra-lite was white and this one is the red, white, and blue variant. I have the 52 ultra-lite version but mines in the grey color scheme and my ice only made it to day 4 in direct sun. Thank you for the video been debating getting the smaller version!
Lucky to make it to day three well that’s 10x better than my Coleman I’ll fill it up at work at about 5:30 it will be all water by the time I get off at 3
Thanks for the review. How many cans with ice does the cooler realistically hold? Id like to use it with the divider and tray. Can you tell me how many cans fit on each side with ice? Thanks!
With the divider you can put 18 cans on a side. It might be smarter to go 15 or 16 to give you more room for more ice. That’s without using the tray. With tray on one side I’d plan on it holding 9 cans on the tray side.
glad cuze i just got an ultra light one as well have nit used it yet but i hope it does better than 2 days 😮 I got Yue white one with Grey color wonder if color matters or not?
Where did you get the red white and blue version? I can't find it online. I have the 52qt virgin but wanted a smaller option for shorter outings in this color option.
It's available on their site now for purchase, I just ordered one. Great deal considering a Yeti similar size is $250. I don't need a small cooler like this to last more than a day or two.
But to be fair, no reasonable person trying to get the most out of any cooler's performance leaves it out exposed to the direct sun and expect it to last for half a week. It would be a better test to place it in the shadow of a tree or vehicle, as this is what a majority of people do, myself included, especially when taking coolers like these into remote locations for several days as they are designed to do. This test is like leaving your aged USDA prime steak on a grill for half an hour and then complaining that it's overcooked, tough, and doesn't taste the way a $60 piece of steak should. You want to maximize the taste (in this case, the performance). Just a thought.
Thanks for watching and it did get shade for about half The day. It was sitting between an oak tree and a sea grape tree. It was in about the same spot as I put my other coolers in the other videos.
Do you have the dimensions of the bottom of the cooler? I’ve got a specific space I’m trying to fit it in and I haven’t been able to find those dimensions anywhere. Thanks!
Can you stand on the cooler without any flexing? Thinking about picking one up as a Front casting platform on my skiff for added height. But don’t know if the light weight coolers are as sturdy as the normal ones.
Good question. It’s very sturdy and I’ve sat on mine with no issues so I’d think as long as you stood on the outer edges and not in the middle of the lid that you’d be good.
I would think youd see a massive difference if you had an all white cooler instead of all dark colors that do nothing but soak up the sun and hold heat.
Cooler not pre chilled? Warm drinks tossed in? Do my ole camping trip trick. Throw a 2 inch layer of ice in, then rock salt the ice. Then throw in food/drinks and then poor in ice with no more salt added. And keep cooler out of direct sun.
our boss just ordered like 20 of these for his troops. had no idea what a score this was, guy knows how to show appreciation

Thank you for the review! You sealed the deal for me going out and buying one. I think it’s a great single day or over nighter camping trip!
Thank you for watching, glad this helped you out!

Soooooooooo good

They have this soft clearance at Walmart right now for $25. Is that a good deal so I pick it up or two lol

I firmly believe that the color plays a big part. My 52 ultra light, the ice lasts for almost 5 days with heavy usage
@@brocktibbs1531 what color is the 52?

It was a color option when they first came out. The patriot edition I believe is what the color combo was called.

@@carsonpoppenger3189it’s actually like $275 and then around $303 after taxes. I just bought this same exact Rtic cooler for $149 lol
I think the red color made it absorb more heat compared to the white cooler.
This cooler or the lifetime one? Trying to figure out which one to buy
It all depends on what you’re going to be doing and which one fits your lifestyle more.

Just measured it. It’s 21 1/2 x 13
How is the drain plug holding up? I keep hearing and reading that is the biggest issue with RTIC coolers.
@@paulcarlin5181 mine works great. The wire that holds the cap gets messed up occasionally but the plugs don’t leak.

Rtic says in their description of the cooler that the lid is non slip and doubles as a "casting platform ". That sold me.

I saw a huge difference in temp with cooler color in the video I did with Rtic vs Yeti.

Do you think maybe plastic bottles vs aluminum cans make a difference? Not being a troll. a serious question.
It’s possible. I’ve never really thought about it. If there is a difference I’d guess it would be negligible. Thanks for watching!
