The real trick with these ice chests is to throw a bag of ice in the day before you plan to use it, then drain the water out. This will prime the ice chest. Once it is drained, go ahead and fill it up with ice. Now it will last nearly twice as long because the ice isn't having to cool off a warm cooler. We call that the sacrificial ice method, and it is very useful for camping and hunting trips when you really need that ice to last as long as possible.
Great idea! I've never thought of that! Sounds like it would def help
I have those reusable ice packs…I throw them in my deep freezer a few days before I need them, put them in the cooler and it cools it like ice, but they’re reusable. Not that a bag of ice is that expensive.
Ive tried to explain this to my folks. But they never even try to understand
Oh well when those later 100°F camping days come. They can borrow some of my ice😎
@@scotteger6271That’s exactly what I do as well. No wasting ice and still does the trick!
Why not just use frozen bottles of water instead of messing with ice packs?🤷♂️
Best part of the video “you know how many coors lights I could buy with $200”
It's a no brainer.... hahaha
Def swayed me for the RTIC and it just arrived today. Thanks for the real work review, new subscriber because of this!!
Thank you very much! Glad I could help!
Cant wait for my rtic 20 to come in. Will be using them for weekend baseball/softball tournaments. Went with that size to keep in the wagon as we go from field to field and spend the whole day at the diamonds. Tired of having water in the cooler i did have before we even got to the games. Just on the ride there the ice would melt so bad.
Excellent straight up comparison Thank you
Great Video! I’m looking to get a new cooler for my dad for Father’s Day! This video definitely helped me decide which one to get!
He will love it!
Hey just bought myself a Rtic. Your videos were the swaying vote lol. Thank you for what you’ve done and the time you’ve taken.now let’s grab a Colorado Koolaid
Glad I could help
Definitely just swayed me to pick up an Rtic! You just got a new subscriber!
Glad I could help!
Appreciate this video - excellent side by side test.
Thanks!
Awesome review...... I picked up the RTIC ultra light 52 quart Patriot theme one for the father's day special.....it came with two 20 oz patriot cups.... As well.... I can not wait to use mine for tractor pulling trips along with camping with the boy scouts since I'm an assistant scout master..... Thanks for the honest review of the two brands.... I'm really impressed on how well it's built.....
It's a great ice chest!
I bought an Rtic 52 after watching your previous video, and love it. Great video!
Thank you!
Definitely going with an Rtic!
I have the rtic 52 and it works awesome for camping trips. Worth the money 💰
No doubt!
Glad you all love our products. Whenever you’re in Houston come visit our retail store.
Hey if you need me to review anything hit me up!!
A cool challenge and outcome!
I agree!
Great job sir! If you remember I asked about this rtic last year in you review videos. Got it and love it, my ice held for 6/7 days in the sun. All of your reviews held true and this video further compliments that. Love seeing these type of reviews of the rtic and their competition, keep it up!
I just ordered an RTIC 32 qt UltraLight ... I knew about the different construction before hand but the weight difference was my primary concern. Glad to see it is still a solid cooler.
It is!
Buying that RTIC this weekend. Idk if this Texas summer will be as hot & miserable as last year but I don't wanna take any chance.
I love that kick ass intro. I just stumbled across this channel. This is my kid of content keep it coming.
Thank you!!
I am now a new subscriber, I loved your video and I was actually torn between both, and wondering if the Yeti was worth the extra money. I can afford it, but I think the Rtic wins. Thanks again!
Glad I could help!
Good video thanks!
Thanks for watching
Very helpful
Great vid...thanks for the info.. The naming convention differences are weird. The Rtic 52 looked like it had more extra room after the 56 lbs of ice vs. the Yeti 65 with the same. I bet you could have included the freezable divider in the Rtic, still had the same capacity, and boosted the performance even more. And I bet the Rtic would still be lighter and 6 cases of Coors Light cheaper.
That foldable table looks like its about to buckle at any minute haha
Great video!
Thanks!
I'm a YETI fan for life! Love your videos man!
Thanks!
Cool ice machine!
I know this is an old video, but I must say that there are diminishing returns with these coolers. So thanks so much for this video. RTIC is the way to go. It doesn't matter if the RTIC didn't perform as good (which it did). Even if the Yeti provided a few hours of better performance it still wouldn't justify the price... Thanks again for this video because you have help me make the decision on what to buy. RTIC all the way.
Good video brotha
Thanks!
I bet you took a day or at least half a day of ice retention in that RTIC when you broke up the big chunk. I'd love to see you try the $100 Monoprice Emperor roto cooler vs a name brand roto.
I'll have to check them out.
I like the part where you made us watch you drive around and load ice in the coolers. Haha. Seriously though, thanks for the video.
Thanks
Ole boy i don't know what you do for a living but nice truck and very good video.
Thanks!
Shout out from South Texas #New Sub #Awesome Channel
Thanks!
Great comparison! I went with the Rtic for food and a wheeled Lifetime for drinks. Both beat the Yeti on value and weight and they hold ice for over 5+ days. No reason to overspend for a status symbol cooler
No doubt! Thanks for watching!
Which lifetime did you get for drinks?
8:01 You also did the RTIC a disservice by breaking up that LARGE chunk of ice. It's proven fact that mass doesn't melt as fast. By breaking up that large chunk of ice inside the RTIC, could have been the deciding factor if RTIC could have gone a day longer than the YETI, instead of the "same amount of time".
Either way, 7 days is a long time for either cooler. I have been a long time RTIC fan, and I'm glad to see RTIC still holding strong! 💪
That chunk was quit loose. It's a good cooler for sure.
@@EverydayMan I see. The video made it seem like they were still somewhat semi-frozen together before being broken apart. My bad.
As Fate would have it, when I went to buy the Rtic cooler, the wife didn’t like the looks of it. So, I had to settle for the Yeti Tundra 65 in navy blue. One should never argue with his wife! lol 😂
No doubt! Lol
I watched another channel that put the Navy Blue Yeti in the sun with a white Rtic in the sun. He used a gun thermometer and the Navy Yeti ended up being wayyy hotter on the outside and the white Rtic ended up keeping ice longer! It was deduced the darker color cooler caused the ice to melt faster.
You should have measured the water temperature on the final check. That would give you the definitive answer to which performed the best. But I agree, the $200 extra is not worth it. I’d pick RTIC.
Thanks. U sold me.
Thanks for watching!
Our coolers are some of the best on the market. They are manufactured utilizing one-piece seamless rotational molded construction. From the one-piece seamless construction to the ultra-thick insulation, this virtually indestructible rotational molded cooler has all of the features outdoorsmen want
rtic say they are rotomolded
The ultralight doesn't claim to be rotomolded.
Nice work
Great review Sir! Are you able to sit on the Rtic with no issues? Odd question, but when I have drink parties, someone always sits on the damn cooler lol
Absolutely, I'm a big Ole boy and I stand on it.
Nice vid. If you really want to get into the weeds you do have to pre chill to have a fair comparison. The reason why is because the yeti is so much heavier. When you dumped in all that ice the thermal mass of the yeti is so much greater that it will melt more ice than the rtic trying to cool down. Its like throwing ice on a warm 12 pack vs a warm 6 pack. You just need more ice. Once the pre-chill is done then you can go ahead and do a scientific test. My guess is the yeti wins by one day. Probably nit a huge deal but i just wanted to point this out
I know they are supposed to be pre cooled
But I think in the real world that it is rarley done. I know I don't do it. So for me this was a real world comparison. But you are correct.
Don't forget, Yeti recommends to pre-cool them with ice. It does work and it helps alot! Thanks for the video
Yeah, I mentioned that they both recommend that. I didn't do it to either one to keep it fair.
Now it's time to try it while they're in the sun!
@@Only9mm The Yeti would do worse than the RTIC in the sun because its blue color will absorb more heat than the RTIC's white color scheme.
You can always tell the people that didn't watch more than a couple minutes of the video. Since he clearly stated this in the video.
@@Valkaneer Captain Obvious nothing gets past you
Those RTIC Ultralight coolers do look nice and seem to work very well but Yeti has a special place in my heart lmao
Yeah, they look good in the bed of my truck and side by side, lol
That's what happens when you spend too much money on something.
@@GPG7754 you ain't wrong lol
My casio tells time just as well as your tag 🤷🏻♂️. The yetti it just truck bed jewelry
Hahaha!!
I also noticed the internal sizes are about the same.
yup 52 quarts
Whole lotta Coors lite, isn't that what the coolers were full of at the end of day 7? 🇨🇦
Would you ever consider buying an RTIC 45 that’s roto molded like the Yeti to compare? Maybe not just ice melt, which is important, but also things like standing/sitting on them? I know you probably shouldn’t but at camp almost everyone ends up sitting on their coolers lol. I’m just wondering how the ultralight holds up to that kind of weight on the lid.
I sit on it all the time. It holds up really good.
I’m willing to bet that if you wouldn’t have stirred them up, the Rtic would have held longer. Not by much, but longer anyway.
I just ordered rtic 20 can soft cooler for my truck
I just got the 30 can vackpack and love it.
Can you use the RTic for a seat for a guy your size? Debating between this 52 and the hard 45 RTic
Absolutely, it's built very well.
I really want to buy one but just wondering if it will outlive me like my yeti will. I have used it for a jack stand under the trailer of a 18' fiberglass boat. Not partial to "yeti" it was a gift but I'm considering the RTIC roto over this and I can't decide.
It will last
A friend of mine has the RTIC 45…another friend has a Yeti Tundra 50 (no longer available). When we go to camp their coolers perform equally well and have a similar amount of interior space. Personally I think I like the ultralight 52 better but I’m also not incredibly hard on my gear. So maybe if absolute durability is your number one priority then the roto molded ones are a better choice
My only question is, did the darker color of the yeti make a difference.
I thought that too possibly but the RTIC does have an extremely dark gray interior…so maybe it’s a wash? They were in the shade so might have less of an effect than direct sunlight. The Yeti is still a decently light color, it’s not like navy blue or black. It’s a good question though.
Do you have any problems with the rtic 52 leaking at the drain mine does
Not as long as they are both tight. I use mine inside my truck with no leaks.
Hey Steve, take the drain plug off that's leaking and go to Lowes or Home Depot and find a rubber gasket that fits. Screw it back in and hopefully that will fix the leaking problem. Cheers.
I just bought Yeti Tundra 35, but after I saw this video, im not sure if I regret buying Yeti, BTW, im a new on this cooler box so I have no Idea 🙄
They are both nice. The RTIC is a better value for sure.
@@EverydayMan i see, then I stick with the Yeti, since I already bought it
how about rtic vs the igloo bmx? 😅
Looks to keep cool as well as yeti, but what about durability. Would the Artic stand up in a test of abuse? Yeti is overpriced in comparison, but part of that is build quality.
It's held up very well., of coarse I haven't thrown it from a moving vehicle yet 😅
High deserts of SO CAL
Ice, is not the only test. My yeti aphas fallen off the Jeep roof c coup,e times and is still going strong. However , my Artic did not survive the first fall. Hence the reason a bought the yet 4 years ago. Durability counts , especially when wheeling down some tuff trails to some great Quail spots in the hi deserts of So Cal.
Stop dropping your shit
How do you know the attic isn’t durable if not more durable? Truth is Yeti looks nice and seems better but it really isn’t.
I won a yeti 65 awhile ago and it’s awesome. Would never buy one though.
@@Bigbossman12624 Other than price, why would you not buy?
@@paulcarlin5181 that’s the only reason why. Size as well really. I’m not a drunk so I don’t need a massive cooler.
Hope the cooler don't walk off LOL
Hahaha, it didn't. I live in a good neighborhood.
But the question is: Is the rtic bear and with this young kids proved?
Nothing says, “I have more money than brains” like Yeti…
Wahnsday 🤣 never heard it pronounced that way.
Lol
7:41
Why did you BUST the chunk of ice it will last longer if you didn’t bust it lol
It wasn't super solid, it kinda fell apart in my hand.
@@EverydayMan it’s all good Great Video !
@@redfish3054 thank you!
Do K2 coolers
You should have put the chest in direct sunlight
Thanks for watching.
Would have been worse for the Yeti. The darker color would affect retention and absorb more solar energy
Zero reason to buy that overpriced Yeti. The only one that's that expensive I would consider is the Orca and that's because it's made in America and has a lifetime warranty. I think I do see an Rtic in my future though.
No doubt!
Canyon. Bison. Grizzly. Cordova. All win over Yeti.
