About ten years ago I came home from work to find the molding on my front door ripped off and all the blinds in my house were destroyed. At that time I had an Amstaff who was heavily inbred and wasn’t quite right between the ears. He was a high drive, destructive, compulsive, man biter, but above all he was loyal beyond words. Initially, I was pissed thinking Bo tore up the house again due to his separation anxiety. Turns out the neighbors on both sides of me were burglarized that day. Bo was just looking to get busy and I couldn’t have been more proud of him.

We used to have a pug, a giant schnauzer, and a shepherd mix. The pug was always the first one to hear something unusual and start the rest barking. Even a small dog's warning bark can buy you precious seconds when you have to move fast to keep yourself safe.

Pugs were bred as guard dogs for Chinese soldiers actually. I have two. And their bark even sounds bigger than most small dogs I'd say. They do have a huge throat relative to their size lol.

I had a European Dobermann. I never locked my backdoor and in the summer I kept the backdoor fully open so my dog could choose if he wanted to be in the house or roaming in the garden.
He had a six sense about right and wrong.
He was a great friend, guard dog and protection dog.

Our house was robbed while we were sleeping upstairs. The thief came in through the garage. At some point he tried the door to the house unfortunately it was open. The thief came in found keys on the bar stole my wife’s car and about $8000 of my tools. While my wife and I and our 15-year-old Jack Russell terrier slept upstairs. Now we have a Rocco he is a 11 -month-old Boerboel about 150 pounds. No one is going to come into the house without us inviting them! To distinguish friend from pho we have trained him to understand someone’s here to see you. If we say that he’s a happy boy. If we do not say that he is not happy about people coming to the house! He understands friends are here to see him. He is very intuitive and understands friend from pho. We are extremely happy with Rocco!!! Thank you. Robert

Way back when I was a kid one of our neighbors had a Blue Heeler. Great dog, loved kids, but also had a protective streak. One day some doofus came over the fence while the neighbor was gone and tried to get in the back door. He went back over that fence, literally, with a blue heeler attached to his ass. The guy who lived next door saw it after he was alerted by the ruckus and took off after the burglar with the dog still attached to his ass. Anytime the guy tried to hit or kick the dog, it just circled and stayed behind him. So here's this guy, in a field, 100 yards away from where he just left his fingerprints on a sliding glass door, spinning circles trying to get the heeler to let go. Meanwhile the heeler is tearing his pants off. We all got off the schoolbus in time to see the cops arresting a guy in his underwear with tears literally running down his face and the neighbor standing there with a shovel in his hand (first weapon he could grab on his way after the burglar) laughing his ass off.
So yeah, dogs can absolutely deter crime. And provide much entertainment.

    • @nose_poke
      @nose_poke 3 года назад +4

I have a heeler. Can confirm-they know who is supposed to be around and who isn't. They can pick up on a person's bad intentions. And they take their family's security pretty seriously! Heelers are not for everyone (they're a lot of dog) but after having one for many years I don't think I'll seek out any other breed.

Another solid topic Zeke. As a retired NYPD dude I absolutely agree with dog ownership being a deterrent for burglars. We had tons of burglaries, I was hired in 1992 at 20yrs old, towards the end of the "crack era" so burglaries were at an all time high (maybe the pun is intended). People (victims) had all sorts of alarms and wondered "how did they get in", we woulkd say "they broke in, they don't care about alarms", by the time the alarm company alerts the Police Dept the perpos are already in the wind and on to the next one. Not one time did I respond to a burglary where the homeowners had a dog
When I was a "new jack" my first purchase was an '88 Bronco immediately followed up by a Rottweiler, you know the deal. Years later I stumbled across some free dogs, stray pitbulls, the male I had 100% confidence in that he had my "six" covered, the female, haha not so much, total lover of every human she has met. She is still with me along with the new dude that is some kind of Frankensteinb bully mix. He got the crap kicked outta him so his confidence isn't where I like it but we are steadily building it up
    PS what's good bernie

I feel like for being a small dog the pug has a somewhat of a bigger-dog sounding bark (not always like when they just want inside, they try to sound more cutesy). They do wear the same size collar as my Dobies lol. And believe it or not the pug was created as a guard dog for Chinese soldiers, small enough to fit in their sleeping bags. My pugs are highly attached to my side and defensive of me. If my dad tried to play fight with me he better not do it when my pug is around cuz he won't let it happen lol.

Your life will change once you have a dog. They require socialization to new and novelty things so they don’t develop fear aggression which can become a liability. Exercise them daily to keep their mind sharp. If you don’t have the time daily to give them- then you’re doing your dog a disservice.

My best guard dog was a brave little West Highland White Terrier named Charly. He never failed to defend us if we were in danger. Once, he scared off a would-be burglar who was trying to sneak in through the back porch. The guy was probably running away out of fear of being caught rather than fear of the dog, but Charly didn't know that. He felt so powerful afterwards. He pranced around for days.
Another time he stopped a trespassing German shepherd from attacking our cat. This was a fight he never could have won, but he was not afraid. The other dog fortunately, did not want to fight. She left the cat alone from then on. Her alcoholic owners continued to let her trespass, so Charly's ability to make her behave was a lifesaver. I was so proud of him.

I live in a small rural community in Western Maryland. Have had and owned dogs of many breeds all my life. 20 years ago I was looking for a Bloodhound wanted a good hunting/tracking dog and still a loyal energetic dog when I go hiking and camping. That didn't happen. I stumbled apon a brand new 3 days old litter of Registered and healthy blood line of Great Danes for dirt cheep I mean dirt cheep. Talked to the breeder and visited every day. Took my absolute BFF home at 9 weeks old. I've been hooked on Danes ever since and will be for life!
But to go along with your video here. The FedEx the UPS regular mail man and even the electric and water meter readers will not knock or step foot on my property. They will sit in the driveway and call me to make sure I am home or that my Dane is inside the house. All of them have met my Danes and know they are harmless. But the size and the window shaking bark they make scares everyone of them. Sametime 5 of my neighbors have been broken into and robbed in the past 10 yrs. They all ask why I haven't been. My neighbors ask why I never get robbed. I tell them straight get a big dog or several big dogs instead of little ankle biters or cats.
Nobody wants to try thier luck with a 150 plus pound dog even if he is honestly friendly.

I don't remember if it was your channel or not, but someone on RUclips mentioned hounds making good guard dogs. And having a family that has downsized from mastiff-type dogs to hounds, I would have to agree. We currently have a lab/coonhound mix and the whole neighborhood knows when anything is going on in our house/yard. Not to mention most hounds are good size dogs, our mix weighs about 70 pounds, and a bloodhound can easily go over 100. I can speak from first hand experience just how painful their barks are, I can literally feel my eardrums vibrating every time I go into my parents' house and the dog is losing her mind because I'm home. Seen a few videos for small guard dogs and they always include beagles not because their going to tear a bad guy to bits (which would be an insurance nightmare) but because they are very loud fuzzy alarm.

This is one of those matters where it's finding an appropriate deterrent.
While a huge, territorial, obedient dog is going to be a bigger obstacle, it is also likely to occur a greater cost than projected burglary losses (depending on house value, location, etc.).
It's probably the case that an astute, vocal dog is going to be enough to make your neighbors a better target (in most cases).
However, if you've got a pricier house or contents the balance is going to shift to a more expensive, menacing dog.
It's always a manner of judgement. For some people a S tier guard dog is going to be much more money than their likely losses to burglary.
E.g. If I were living in a modest home in a crime haven, much beyond a spirited jack russel might be overkill

Some people think if they have a certain breed the dog is going to automatically do all the fairy tales they've been told the breed dose. "WITH NO TRAINING" LOL!!
Even though a lot people don't get it, I'm glad you try to explain the difference in having a protection dog, pet or guard dog. My advice to anyone that dose not know for a fact that their dog will protect them or not is don't advertise that weak link and let your dog or yourself get hurt because you put the dog in a situation it was not prepared for.

i have a one year old siberian husky that i’ve had since he was three months. a lot of people say they are non-territorial and not very protective but i haven’t found that to be the case with my boy. he’s standoffish and very alert. he has a full mask, defined eyebrows, and a darker pattern so he looks intimidating to strangers. we usually only get other husky owners or people familiar with the breed coming up to us. he does NOT like people he hasn’t been introduced to in our home. he will only approach them with the okay from me, which is probably the only time he cares about my opinion lol. i live alone, so he gives me and my family peace of mind.

I have an APBT and although I don't believe he would do much to guard an empty house, his bark and look are very imposing and when it comes to his family he is very protective and watchful. My last dog was a Boxer / Rhodesian Ridgeback and of all the dogs I have owned in my life, he was the most ready and capable dog when it came to being a home protector. He was 85 lbs of pure muscle and had the eyes that let you know he was always ready to handle business if called upon.

We have an Alpenhütehund (Alpine Shepherd) and he looks like a medium size German Shepherd with folded ears. As a shepherd breed from Germany, his temperament is also very similar to a GSD, very obedient with natural protection instincts.

my grandpa always said about home defense, it doesn't have to look mean it just has to sound mean. my standard poodles all have had really intimidating barks, but they aren't mean and definitely dont look mean lol, but just their bark alone would make someone think twice about coming in there.

We have crossed a Swiss Mountain dog with a Pyrenees/Anatolian. We have four of the puppies from the three litters. Interesting fact, mom is super territorial and has raised her kids to act as a single unit when strangers come into our yard. She’s bitten our farrier and neighbor who entered our property without telling us. She doesn’t even have to do much but encourage her kids to move into action. That being said, these dogs are totally submissive to us. It’s been a pretty powerful deterrent. The guarding and protecting instinct is unreal.

The thing is your dog doesn't even need to bite or get aggressive. The best example is my friend's American bully. He used to live in one of the dangerous areas of our country where robberies were everyday things. But his 100lbs Amercian Bully was so muscular and dangerous looking that people crossed roads when he used to walk. His home never got robbed. The thing is Rambo (his bully breed) was extremely friendly even with strangers and would not make a good guard dog. But his appearance was more than enough to keep burglars away!

I wanted a red Tibetan Mastiff. However my finances weren't allowing for it. I've done all my research. Watched your video, read books, and spoke with several owners. Including the breeder Rick Eichhorn. However I am blessed to get the experience with the breed. I'm currently fostering 2 TM's both male. That were rescued from an abusive environment. They're coming along. The youngest of which has suffered the worse. He is coming along. The older one is making himself at home. I've chosen this breed after the research because of their independence yet loyalty to family. I live in an area with coyote, bobcat, and other wildlife. I love ❤ my fosters. Look forward to restoring a spirit of trust once again

This is why I'm looking into getting an Am. Akita soon. I've had JRTs as my first dogs, but they dont have that deterrence - as said in the video about smaller breeds - of a much larger dog with assertiveness to warn strangers they're not wanted here. In this society it's getting bad based on the numerous videos from doorbell cams & other house surveillances I've seen. These thieves make it off with valuables too & cant afford losing money or some item that holds sentimental value either, which makes me also want to consider getting a large, but agile & fast breed - I'm thinking a European Doberman to chase down those athletic thieves. Keep one dog in the back (the Akita), while one is inside or somewhere monitoring the front yard (European Doberman).

Our latest dog was a Ridgeback. He passed away some years ago.
I am now getting close to retirement and we have been talking about if we should get a new dog.
Both I and my partner do however now have some problems with arms and neck.
Therefore a somewhat smaller dog may be a better match.
We still would like the dog to have some deterant effect and in worst case, ability to protect.
What do you think about breeds like the German Pinsher, the Standard Schnauser or Engilsh Staffordshire terrier?
Do you have proposals for other breeds that would fit the bill?

We have a Shar Pei and shes the best guard dog ive ever had. Truly only barks when there is something really going on and really observant. Also deterred a would be-robber when we were walking in the streets. The person was eyeing me too long and she caught on and stood her ground to give him the deathstare. Had other dogs that would bark at anything, even squirrels 50 meters away. Right now I know that if my dog barks I need to check it out.

The Jack Russel mix we currently have is to small to be much more than an alarm. But sometimes I'm glad to have that alarm. And he provides the wife with company and comfort while I'm at work. Now if/when I get moved to the type place that I can have whatever kind of Dog I want,I'm considering a Rottweiler. I like the idea of a large imposing Dog that values it's owner and family. From what I've read they have Protective instincts so they will at least bark and maybe bluff. And to top it off, while they do need exercise, they don't need as much as some other breeds. At one time I was leaning toward a GSD but from what I've read they have much higher grooming and exercise needs than the Rottweiler .
