The atrocities carried out in Hungary in 1848 in the name of a very young Frank Joseph took himself and Elisabeth (Sissi) nearly twenty years to repair.
My paternal grandfather was a sapper in the Austro-Hungarian army. After the war he soon found he lived in Poland because he had been on the losing side. (Most people where he lived were Ukrainians despite the new borders, and had been okay with being part of Austria-Hungary.)

Count Josef Václav Radecký of Radče, Marshal of the Austrian Army, came from an ancient Bohemian noble family.
That chad Austrian general is called Joseph Radetzky and he is of Czech ancestry so basically song is about Slav.
