Maarten You are the Menu Master! The only person in the world that makes menus interesting and fun to watch even for cameras I don’t like. Of course I like this camera and mirrorless in general but I would watch your reviews also for washing machines. I just love the enthusiastic and humble tone of a friend showing me his last new toy
So kind of you to say, such a pleasure to read your comments. I hadn't thought about reviewing washing machines - but my first thought is that in general, they're not as interesting visually ...
I appreciate this is from last year, but I having just watched the review (I'm considering buying an X-e3), I find myself agreeing wholeheartedly with your comment. A most helpful and comprehensive review of the cameras features and some useful suggestions for its functions.
This is hands down the most useful camera review I've ever seen. No stats and other nonsense that can be googled. Just a plain and complete walkthrough of settings and their usefulness as a photographer. Five years later, and it's still helping people. I've been debating selling my A7C because I want a Fuji as my backup body. This video made it clear that the X-E3 is the right replacement. Thanks a bunch 👍
About the third time I've watched this video after a year (almost) of ownership and I still haven't absorbed all the rich features of this camera. The work you've put in on this is astonishing. Fantastic, and I'd say the best video on YT for the X-E3.
@@MaartenHeilbronhi, I know this video is a bit old but I have a question if you can help me . I have an xe3 camera but the iso extended mode sims unavailable on my camera, my iso stop at 200 on the menu, how can I activate the iso extended mode please?
That's very odd. HAve you tried to reset the camera? What exposure mode are you using? How are you accessing the ISO setting - try from the shooting settings menu.
@@MaartenHeilbron I found the "problem", the camera must be set with mechanical shutter only in order to access the ISO extension option. Thanks for your help✌️
Yet again, the best review out there. If you want to really know what a photographer looks for in a camera, look no further than Maarten. I have purchased - with confidence - 6 cameras over the years based on his reviews. Never disappointed and no nasty surprises that you often get with other reviews. Excellent.
Hi Maarten! Great video as always! Just to clarify, the X-E3 will include the EF-X8 hotshoe flash. Just like the X-T2. To help centre the tripod mount, we do have the optional metal hand grip. This is also compatible with most Arca Swiss tripods.
I’ve had the X-E3 since yesterday. A lovely little thing. It replaces my deceased X-E2 and it’s different enough to have a learning curve but similar enough to feel familiar. Just wanted to say thank you for a comprehensive overview. I may want to refer to it in the coming days as I dig into the menus and make the camera truly mine.
I haven't seen such a comprehensive review in long time, especially from the view of a veteran photographer. Awesome work and confirms that I need to pick this one up.
Another great and comprehensive review from Mr. Heillbron, was waiting for this camera since Fuji rumors mentioned it few months back, as an upgrade from my 3 years old X-M1 but the lack of tilting screen just killed it for me! Purchased X-20 thou and it's hell of camera for its size and wight.
Maarten, THE BEST fast and snappy user guide on this camera! Awesome job. I've saved it to my Watch Later list for handy access. Thank you for your sterling work!
I have to agree with the below comments, Maarten. You present a 100% thorough review of each camera, it's menu system, set-up, advantages and disadvantages. Totally professional, generally neutral and with comments on your own preferences which is absolutely fine. The only thing I'd note is that everything goes so fast (yes, I realize you're 30 minute videos would otherwise be two hours), that I have to go back over certain parts of your clips again and again to ensure I caught everything. I don't know how you keep everything lined up so methodically! I know where I need to turn to learn more about my X-E3 than I've figured out myself. Thanks!
Thank you for such an extensive and thorough walkthrough of the X-E3. I have much to learn as a photography noob, and look forward to more of your informative videos!
This is one of my favorite channels for fantastic, in depth reviews without a lot of fluff. As always a great job giving us the facts we want and need to know. Thank you so much!
That's very kind of you. Although I have to be realistic about my appeal, which does not compete with the likes of Kai, Peter McKinnon or Matt Granger and his models.
Another great video!! A quick way to enable back button focus is to set the focus mode selector on the front of the camera to M and then you can use the AF-L button for back button focus, its a lot less hassle than going into the menus. One point though, in 4k video the X-E3 uses the full width of the sensor and uses pixel binning exactly the same as the X-T20 does, you do not have a reduced angle of view like you do on the X-T2 that crops 4k video. This is with firmware version 1.0, maybe you were using a pre-production version of firmware, but as shipped there is no crop.
Thanks for taking the time to comment with your kind words, appreciated. My daughter found the mountie in Banff. I wish I had more solar animated things of that quality.
Thank you for the excellent review!! You had me sold to buy the Xe-3 compared to the x100f as it is more family friendly - my wife or others can use it as well.
I never never leave comments in videos, but had to congratulate :) this is an awesome and comprenhensive video, I was wondering about the usage of the camera without the buttons of the X-T10 and this video helped me clear a ton of my questions! Much more than the camera guy in the store... thank you so much :) and congratulations again!
How exciting to know that my video motivated you to comment - and thank you for your kind words, they're much appreciated. It's always great to know that my videos have been useful to my viewers.
I recently sold all of my Canon and Leica equipment and am setting up a Fuji system. I started with two XE3's and an XT20 and some lenses. I am very impressed.
At 6:45 you say that the screen follows when you turn the camera. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by that. On every camera I've ever owned, the (not yet recorded) image stays upright in relation to the ground at all times. (Which is what it SHOULD do, I think). The difference seems to be that on the X-E3 there is a lag, so that the image rotation is jerky. But maybe I just misunderstand....
Ah, sorry, I should have been clearer. What rotates is the information display on screen - of course, the image stays upright. The information appears right way up at -90 and +90 rotates to the ground. The screen looks laggy because of my recording.
I just purchased the x-e3 and must say that the setup and menu was overwhelming. Then I found your review. It is bookmarked for reference. Thank you so much for clarification and a meaningful and enjoyable presentation.
Finally? Not sure it's even actually available in stores yet ... I was able to do this because they lent me the camera after I helped them with their Fujiguys channel video. (I owe them some favours in exchange for the extended loan of an X-T2) However, I do thank you for the kind words, they're always appreciated.
Thank you for this great review. I've watched quite a few in the past couple days, and yours is the only one that told me everything I wanted to know. Unless I have a last minute change of heart, you have sold me an X-E3.
I was very lucky to get an X-E3 in mint condition with around 1100 exposures a few weeks back for a steal bargain! Your video helped me a lot to find my preferred settings on this beauty, thank you so much for your efforts in sharing your expertise! 💯
Maarten, thank you for your excellent review. 100% useful content with no filler, delivered in a detailed and interesting way. I think you have the balance between neutral review and opinion absolutely spot on. I have just discovered your channel today and have of course subscribed.
I'm just awaiting my XE3 and lenses, so it's been great to get a walkthrough of the menus, the good points, and the gripes. I'll probably refer back as I get to grips with the camera and manual. Terrific video - many thanks!
Excellent review as always. All my Canon gear has now been sold. I’m stocking up on my film cameras and keeping my eyes out for updates on Fuji mirrorless cameras. While my next big camera purchase is large format (Intrepid), I’m not giving up on the idea of another digital SLR/mirrorless system in the future. I also have my X100F which is just a joy to hold and shoot too.
Very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm still hanging on to one Canon body (50D) and lens (L 24-105). I don't use them a lot, but can't bear to part with them. While I do spend some time lusting after full frame cameras (The D850 is my next review) I'm perfectly satisfied with APS-C. I agree - Fuji builds a lot of joy into their cameras.
Fabulous video. Thanks for all the work to make it so comprehensive with thoughtful opinions and without the sensationalism. Much appreciated! A question regarding the touch screen AF when using the viewfinder: does it work like a mouse (when your finger is on the left side, the AF is on the left), or like a “nudger” - move right to move the AF to the right from wherever it is?
Extraordinarily useful - as a newcomer to Fuji photography, I need to keep this and play it to myself (slowly!) every day for the next month or so. Thank you!
Just found your channel. Very well done. Clear, concise, intelligently presented with no "umma" or "ahh". Have you presented a video for an x100s? Thanks again.
With regards to a tripod mount and the battery door, they did the same thing with the X-E2. If you add the optional grip, it relocates the tripod mount so the lens is properly centered and the battery door is accessible.
Thanks for the note. That would also move the lens mount higher - I found I was unable to mount some of my larger lenses using the quick release for my Manfrotto 701HD head. (The workaround is to mount the camera backwards on the plate, then they can be mounted.
Exactly. Raises it about 1/2", so no clearance issues. I had one for my X-E2 and was able to use the 16 f/1.4 and my 50-140 f/2.8 and the quick release mount for my Oben head without any trouble. Since moving on the to the X-Pro-2 I also added the grip to that body and it provides similar results. Speaking of which, interested to hear your thoughts comparing the Pro-2 to the X-E3. Similar "rangefinder" style but a big difference in price. Do you think weather sealing, dual card slots, and the hybrid viewfinder justify an $800 price difference? There may be other differences but those are the ones than stick out IMHO. Since you have now recently reviewed both I wondered if you had opinion.
Re X-Pro2 to X-E3 - don't really want to start with the "too many models to comprehend or properly differentiate", never mind pricing. In my mind you'd have to love the hybrid viewfinder to buy the X-Pro2, I much prefer the X-T2. The X-E3's only serious downside (unless you're somehow in need of FLog) is the non-swivel screen. If the X-E3 had a rotating/swivel screen it would be close to ideal.
Thank you SO MUCH for this detailed review. I recently got an X-E3 and learned a lot about its functionality which I did not pick up from the manual: Very helpful!!
3 years on, I have just received my second hand XE3, so far the only thing I don't like is that it is no longer possible to program the Fn button to start recording video. Great informative film, thanks.
Hi Maarten, Surely I will never use all the possibilities of the Fuji XE-3, but I am very attracted by its appearance of apparent simplicity. And yet, despite all the possible settings, is it not possible to assign the video recording to any of the Fn buttons? I find it boring to have to manipulate the touch screen menus to record a video. I haven't found an answer to this anywhere (not even in the user manual). Hence my second question ... between this Fuji and the Panasonic GX9, that if it has a direct button for video recording, which would be your favorite, since in the second-hand market they almost cost the same? Thank you very much and greetings from Spain.
I don't have a solution for you, there is no simple one-b button video record function. If your need is for simple video recording, then clearly you are better off with the GX9.
Hi great video. but im having a hard time on the touch screen :( can you give some tips on using the touch screen. i keep i adjusting it by accident and is it normal that i can change film simulation while it indicates on the upper right side that it is off? thanks
I appreciate the kind words. Understood. You can turn the whole thing, or even parts of it (like the swipe, or the snap feature) off. If the upper right side says it's off, that only means the touch to focus or focus and snap is off - that doesn't turn off the swipe feature - it's in the menu (as I demonstrate in the video).
Yet another very comprehensive review. Thanks Maarten! I'm actually planning to get the X-E3 (my first Fuji) as an alternative to my Nikon DSLR system when I want to carry a smaller, more portable and discreet camera. By the way, of the many reviews I've watched on Fuji cameras, none of the reviews mention if the frame rates, both mechanical and electronic, will AE and AF on all those frame rates, whereas most will mention it for Nikon frame rates. Am I missing something?
Thank you - I appreciate the kind words. I'm assuming you mean the burst rate - yes, good question. I'm always testing those in manual exposure mode to determine what the potential maximum is, adding AF and AE will slow the speed, the extent of the speed reduction being somewhat scene and action dependent. Older slower processing technology locked those settings for a higher frame rate, Fuji does not lockup those settings when shooting at the highest rate on their latest models. There is no setting where you explicitly give up AE and AF to increase speed, as there used to be.
This is perhaps your best video yet, and it caused me to buy the camera packaged with the 23mm lens. I had to re-watch in order to set the camera up. Because I already own the X-Pro2 and two X-T2s, I am finding this to be a bit on the small side to operate. I suspect that I will continue to use the X-Pro2 for the street, but this one begs to be the travel body; drop the body alone into one pocket of a sport coat, and the lens into the other.
Thank you for your kind words, always nice to hear I’ve helped - and unless you’re holding it in your hand, that sounds like a good travel solution, although I’m always leery of changing lenses outside.
Another refined and insightful video Maarten . The tripod plate covering the battery slot and the absence of manual description for non activated functions are my gripe too (with other Fuji bodies in my case). Mostly pleased with what Fuji offers for so little money though. With Canadians gaining on the trade discussions and Fuji being on our side it’s a win win situation..eh?
Nice video, very well made. I only missed more information about the touchscreen, as the X-E3 has a much more touchscreen focused approach than other Fujifilm cameras. Especially how well does it work? How responsive is it? Is there any lack? Is it as good as the implementation of the Panasonic cameras?
Very kind of you to say, thanks, always appreciated. Oh, sorry, it works as expected, although it does take a very specific finger action to make the swipe work, but once I got it, no issues. (You can't press and swipe, just swipe) Otherwise, works exactly as promised and expected. Yes, about the same as Panasonic, although Panasonic offers the touch AE function and touch face selection, which is not included here).
Not really as the dynamic range doesn't change. It's just an easier way to get a look in camera as opposed to trying to create it in post. But I do find that part of the attraction of FLog is the look of a flattened response curve in the middle tonal range, which those settings do provide.
Hi lovely review thanks, I would like to ask is this camera still relevant today in 2020 ? It seems to be at a great price now. I am comparing this to the x100f and just trying to make a decision , it will be my mine holiday camera and street camera, I am not interested in video. My only concern is now tilt screen on either 😕. What would be your choice or could you recommend something else ( not RX100 size too small). Thanks Leew
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. If it meets your needs it still relevant, and I would prefer it to the X100F. Have a look at the X-T30 ruclips.net/video/AW2sDwqnUyo/видео.html or X-S10 ruclips.net/video/wmomwFw5yWg/видео.html
@@MaartenHeilbron many thanks for your reply, the only other camera I was looking at was the Panasonic GX9 and 20mm F1.7 mk ii lens. I don’t think the xt30 is for me I like the rangefinder type styling for compactness. If you were to choose xe3 with 23mm f2.0 and Panasonic as above just as a travel camera what would be your choice? Thanks again leew
@@leew6522 I'd be somewhat indifferent - so base your decision on price, how the camera feels in your hand, the access to controls you use frequently as well as your sense of design and brand preference.
Hi Maarten, I like the film simulation that Fuji offers in the X-E3. Is that option only available in camera or can it be applied in post? If it's not available in post, is it possible to record a JPEG with the film simulation and record a RAW image without?
Great review! Love the depth of the information, as well as the detail with which you present it. Couldn't help but think there's no way they _overlooked_ the off centre tripod position - it was a deliberate choice since they know the fanbase is bothered by this. So it's probably for another design consideration of the inner workings that are not visible to us non-fuji-techs :-) I too was thinking: "Well no wonder it doesn't focus on a doll" with the eye focus reliability remark, but you probably know what you're doing with that :-) Thanks again. Great review. PS: Your name sounds so Dutch it's weird!
Thank you - that's very kind of you to say. Deliberate, yes but misguided. Those dolls (I use them all the time) typically focus better than real faces - I was quite surprised when it failed. Not so weird, as I was born in Holland.
Thanks a lot Maarten, I'll be replaying your video once I received the camera. I've bought it last week, but with a different lens: the 18 - 55 mm...I also ordered an adaptor to mount my Contax/Yashika Carl Zeiss lenses, I'm interested to find out how the camera will render images using manual lenses from another brand. I'll report again soon. Thanks again for your video, it clarifies a lot of things already!
I didn't have any issues - but I've seen someone who doesn't wear glasses complaining. You'll have to check it out for yourself. I think the diopter adjustment for my prescription makes an adjustment so that I'm not affected.
Hi! Excellent review. Do you think I'd be okay looking through the evf with my left eye instead of right? I scared there'll be some interference with the touch screen, or just uncomfortable in general...
Would you recommend buying this camera over the more expensive models such as X pro2 or X-T2, assuming budget isn't a problem? I love the simplicity of X-E3, but I wonder if it's a substantially inferior camera compared to the ones I mentioned earlier.
If budget isn't a problem, take the X-T2. Image quality is equivalent, it's operational details, the availability of the battery grip and the tilt screen that are my reasons. But the X-E3 is great when you want small.
Is there viewfinder blur edge issue you found on this camera? I see some glasses wearer users on FB group experienced it, they say glasses wearer can't see the whole viewfinder screen, they need to move the camera to see the edges, is this true?
Hi Maarten I’m looking for your help! I’m thinking about buying the x-e3 but I don’t know if I should buy the x-t20 instead, what do you think i should do ? I like doing street photography but i also want a versatile camera for travel and some landscape also I would like to know which of the two is easier to use. Thank you
Make that "easy to use" (aarrgghh). Unless you have a specific need to limit yourself to 35mm equivalent, the 18-55 is a versatile choice - and Fuji's kit lenses tend to be higher quality than most.
I'd be interested in your comparison of the Fuji X-E3 with the Leica TL2. Both cameras have touch screens, the same size sensor, and are close in size. The Leica lacks a built-in electronic viewfinder and is over twice the cost. How do they compare in image quality? Handling? Operation? Apart from the general aura of Leica projects, are there photographic advantages to the Leica over the Fuji?
Love the review! Very detailed. Can you please confirm if this camera fires external flash on burst? My X-T100 disables flash menu when I select burst. I want to trigger off camera flash on burst mode. Looking for a cheap upgrade.. X-E3 checks all the right boxes.
Of course, I thought I covered that in the video - but to be clear, turn the switch off "auto", and the make sure that the ISO, shutter and aperture settings are not at A - that will give you full manual control.
Hello Maarten! Thanks for the very detail review of X-E3. I love it and still compare X-E3 with X-T20, which one I should buy. But I love the X-E3 design so much!! Too bad it doesn't come with tilting LCD display, which I need for flat lay or food photography. Keep up the good work, Sir!!
I would take the X-T20, but there are certainly reasons to prefer the -E3. I've asked Fuji to lend me both at the same time to do a comparison - stay tuned.
Hello! Great review as usual! I know I am a couple of years late but really like this camera! My question is, I always hear about Fuji being a great street camera but I have a friend that used her X t 10 to shoot the Milky Way, wild flowers etc. I shoot mainly stills of flowers and some abstract. Would this work or should I stick with a “ traditional “ DSLR or a different mirrorless? Thanks!
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. Of course, all cameras can be used for many purposes - however, the style and layout of the X-E3 seemed particularly well suited to street snapping. It has all the capabilities you'd need (depending on your lens choice, but again, many are very versatile) for long exposure night and for close-ups of flowers.
Hi sir, thank you very much for this comprehensive review. Would you be able to recommend other fuji models with similar specs but with a tilting screen?
I'd take the X-T2. It fits my hand better, with the grip it's a great camera for video (which I do a lot) and I like the physical controls for all the exposure settings.
Hello Maarten, I like your reviews as are very detailed and well explained. I would like to ask for your advice. I am a current OMD E-M10 user but evaluating to shift to Fuji X. I see that the X-T20 is a very good camera so as the X-E3, because both have the same sensor, however, I read that the X-E3 has some minor bugs regarding the Face or Eye detect AF (Have you experienced this issue?). So my question is which camera would you recommend me either the X-T20 or the X-E3? Are both better than the E-M5 Mark II in your opinion? Thanks in advance for your time!
Yes, I mentioned that face/eye detect doesn't work as well as I expected in the review. I might give a slight preference to the X-T20, but expect Fuji to updated fixed firmware soon. I haven't review the E-M5 II yet, so can't really judge.
Question... What did you think of the Eye Cup Material? To me it feels more like Plastic than Rubber and I'm concerned that my glasses would get scratched with constant use. My X-E2's Eye Cup is clearly rubber. Thoughts??
I've returned it, so can't get it out to verify - I didn't make a note, so didn't have issues, but in general I would take off my glasses. I find that with my glasses on I often can't see the whole scene in the viewfinder (this is true of most brands).
@@MaartenHeilbron thank you. Its a shame the evf is even smaller rhen the previous models. Its like they dont think people also shoot from evf and not only the back screen..also when the camera is hanging from the neck it operates the tuch screen sometimes. So weird they havnt thought about this things....
@@MaartenHeilbron i mainly use s and m mode, with ms+es shutter, the limit is between 200 and 12800, the iso L and H settings are displayed but not settable for some reason. Maybe these functions are locked by some other setting but i can't find anything regarding that on the user manual.
@@MaartenHeilbron i already shoot at jpeg only, i tried jpeg+raw and raw only and still these settings are obscured, in video mode it's just native 200-12800 no extension. Maybe i should ask fuji directly 😂
Should I get upcoming A7 III, XE3, X100F, RX10 IV, RX100 V, or an iPhone X as my first camera? I plan to take it with me when I go out and even not on a photography trip but just shopping or short travel, a bit street photography or you can call it life style(just found this term from the XE3 ads) shooting because I take all kinds of photos and some random photos too, I'm a Sony fan(Leica and Hasselblad too, but those are too expensive for now), I want to invest in Sony lens more than Fuji, Fuji camera I only like X100F, fixed lens camera that work out of the box, limited fixed lens but force you to be more creativity like how I shoot with my iPhone, but then XE3 seem to be a great camera, but I not sure if I want to invest in Fuji system because Sony system and the real life color looks nicer and more useful(since Fuji color tend to be more film or photo look instead of real life so when you want to shoot how's the real life look, you can't with Fuji) and more third party lens maker build for Sony A7 camera. For Sony, I don't like A6XXX series camera because it feel like a half boiled camera, maybe is the mindset I have since it was called NEX6 because it is a mid range camera between NEX5 and NEX7, and (for me) they don't have a make sense APSC system and not much high quality APSC lens, so it's a bad invest I guess, which only left the upcoming A7 III to choose, I love the A7 system, and I don't think the smaller APSC camera will be easier for to carry since they both not pocketable and end up in a same sling style bag, differences should be weight and grip. RX10 and RX100 cameras lineup are perfect but since they are fixed lens, not sure should I get one of them as first camera, RX100 I can take it to anywhere, RX10 is a little bigger than A7 so end up in a sling bag too so choosing it should compare to A7 lineup usability scenarios, if I get RX100 I not sure it is good to shoot and learn manual or I will end up shoot auto all the time because it's too small and hard to control I believe majority I will shoot close distance and landscape and artitechure style of distance, bird and sky and moon are something I like to try when I get a real camera, sometime but rarely I might shoot live performance, and if I get a interchangeable camera, I will just get a lens to shoot for long first because I still have other things I want to buy and invest in my next plan and dreams, so a 35mm(or 23 in APSC camera term) lens is what I will get first X100F I not sure if it should still in the list of consideration or think of this lineup again when they bring 4K, touchscreen, and better shaper lens on it first on the next one iPhone X? 4K 60fps, low bit rate but I sure the quality will still great, and it's a phone so it cover everything on the go, just use it to do everything and not replaceable battery which will be a pain when battery low, and I was in a trip where the weather is very hot under the bright sunny day, I can't shoot video because the phone is too hot, I guess if I depend on my phone to do so much stuffs will make the lifespan of my phone shorter too which is not great for a kidney price phone I hope you can give me some opinions on this!
Wow, you are casting a wide net and considering a lot of factors that might not be very useful in helping you choose - like colour. All cameras have selectable and customizable colour profiles to create exactly the look you want, or by shooting RAW you can make even more adjustments to suit your style and taste. I would suggest you keep shooting with your phone until you realize that it's not doing what you want - and need a larger sensor, better lenses and more control over the settings.
Is there any chance that you will re-review the x-pro2 after the *alleged* big firmware update coming? Thanks for your always in depth and thorough reviews.
I noticed that on my Xe3 the screen squeeks a little when you tab on the left side of it and can be pushed in a little bit. Is this normal? Could humidity get in the camera throught that? Thanks in advance for helping out! Great video, as always!
Mr Heilbron, your continued efforts in putting out great reviews border on the sublime. Thank you very much. I know that you have a detailed X-E3-X-T20 comparison, but another one with the updated firmware would also be very interesting. Thank you.
This really seems like the perfect camera for me. Small, light and minimal - it’s exactly what’s making me slow down with my a7. Do you still recommend picking this camera up in 2019? Or rather wait a bit more until an updated one comes out? Thank you so much for the excellent video!
I'm not sure when there might be successor, and I don't think there's much that Fujifilm has changed in either functionality - the focus on the latest models might be faster, but I'm not sure that there's not a recent firmware upgrade that also improves the X-E3.
Maarten Heilbron thank you for the reply! I think this did help me narrow down my choice, and I think I’ll end up going with the X-T30 since it’s a little more upgraded :)
@@MaartenHeilbron Oh snap, yes I must have forgotten! It mainly came down to the X-T30 having that upgraded sensor and better video capabilities. Spent the last weekends researching everything about them :D Am really looking forward to switching to Fuji now :)
Which one would you pick? X-E3 or X-T20 (They're both same price)? Or would you consider buying X-T2? Since X-T20 and X-E3 are the half price of X-T2 with 90% of features of X-T2 I'm not sure if it's worth to save money for X-T2 and get less lenses.
Personal decision - which one suits your style (or hand) better? But yes, I would take the X-T2, I've been shooting with it for over a year - stills and video and still am deeply infatuated.
Great review, many thanks for the clarity. Would you recommend this camera (ergonomics, easiness of use) for a beginner intending to do mainly portraits (black and white, love the Acros). Thx a lot.
Thx; Just tried the XE-3 ina shop as well as the X100F. I found the X100F eaisier to hold. I just wonder if the image quality will be the same or JPEG, despite the unique lens. For photos up to A4 format.
Great Review Maarten, I am planning to switch from Canon to Fuji this year. Can you suggest the best three lenses for Kids, Street and Landscape photogrpahy using XE3 and lastly Will there be a problem this camera with big hands? Thanks
Thank you for your kind words. I prefer the larger 16-55 over the kit (although the 16-50 is a much better than average kit lens), I find it very versatile. For street, the 23mm (used in the review) is generally accepted as the best choice. Fuji has a couple of long lenses, but they're big and awkward, I rarely use them.
That depends a great deal on what you are photographing, and the conditions where you are shooting. In general, it would not be a feature I would consider significant.
As always a professional, articulate, unbiased non selling review! First class journalism ! Thank you.
Very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment, appreciated.
That's very kind, thank you!
Always a pleasure to read that my videos have provided useful advice and that my stule is appreciated.
About the third time I've watched this video after a year (almost) of ownership and I still haven't absorbed all the rich features of this camera.
The work you've put in on this is astonishing. Fantastic, and I'd say the best video on YT for the X-E3.
Thanks, always nice to read that viewers find my videos helpful and appreciate my work.
Excellent.
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words and confidence - and I’m glad my reviews are helping.
Subscribed! Easily one of the most useful camera reviews I’ve seen on RUclips!
Your kind words are gratefully appreciated, thanks!!
Hi Maarten! Great video as always!
Just to clarify, the X-E3 will include the EF-X8 hotshoe flash. Just like the X-T2.
To help centre the tripod mount, we do have the optional metal hand grip. This is also compatible with most Arca Swiss tripods.
That's good news - I appreciate the insider knowledge.
Thanks for the note and your kind words.
And the XT-1 ... oh wait, you lot abandoned that one! :P
Thanks for that perspective. Didn't think of that, although it might admittedly be a less than average use case.
Thanks for the kind words, please come back at any time with questions and comments.
What a professional review, I’m amazed how accurate and informative it is. The best out there for this camera, thank you.
Wow, thanks! I appreciate your kind words.
I haven't seen such a comprehensive review in long time, especially from the view of a veteran photographer. Awesome work and confirms that I need to pick this one up.
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment.
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
Extremely articulate, organized and informative. Thank you!
What a pleasure to read your kind words, so very much appreciated.
Maarten, THE BEST fast and snappy user guide on this camera! Awesome job. I've saved it to my Watch Later list for handy access. Thank you for your sterling work!
Wow, this is the second "snappy" today :-) - Thanks for your kind words, they're always appreciated.
Thanks!
A pleasure to read your kind words. The lovely thing about RUclips is that you can watch as often as you need, and there are controls to play slowly.
Thank you for such an extensive and thorough walkthrough of the X-E3.
I have much to learn as a photography noob, and look forward to more of your informative videos!
Very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
This is one of my favorite channels for fantastic, in depth reviews without a lot of fluff. As always a great job giving us the facts we want and need to know. Thank you so much!
How kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
Lovely work mate.
I appreciate the kind words, always nice to see your avatar.
Maarten Heilbron one day your channel will catch fire, just too good of quality to not get noticed.
That's very kind of you. Although I have to be realistic about my appeal, which does not compete with the likes of Kai, Peter McKinnon or Matt Granger and his models.
I have to disagree about your comment re appeal! You are up there with the best.
You are too kind.
You are right on with your considerable comments about Fuji. I found Fuji about a year ago and have been having a ball.
Thanks, always nice to hear from a fan - they do have many fine cameras. I'm very interested to see the improvements in the upcoming firmware release.
This is the best review i've seen for understanding how to get started with my Fujifilm X-E3! Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful! Always nice to hear from a viewer who appreciates my videos.
Maarten, really appreciate your thorough and to-the-point approach, great review again, brilliant work.
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting, always appreciated.
Thanks for the kind words and the tips, always appreciated.
Sometimes I revisit this video for all the little tweaks and tips you gave. Thanks 👍
How kind of you to take the time to comment, thanks, appreciated.
Great video again Maarten, wow so much information in this one, I've been watching it off and on all day lol.
Nice to hear from you again, thanks for your kind words.
Thanks for the detailed video as always!
The dancing mounty is so adorable! :)
Thanks, it’s always nice to know that my videos are useful.
Sounds like a good starter system.
You are the master for camera reviews on RUclips. keep up the great reviews you provide. I got this camera with 18-55 Kit and don't regret.

@@MaartenHeilbron Your Welcome. You have a gift.

I'm so glad you found it helpful, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Finally a review of the X-E3. Thank you very much for making a comprehensive review.
Always nice to hear that my videos have provided the information you were looking for. Thanks for commenting.
I was very lucky to get an X-E3 in mint condition with around 1100 exposures a few weeks back for a steal bargain! Your video helped me a lot to find my preferred settings on this beauty, thank you so much for your efforts in sharing your expertise! 💯
Great to hear! I still consider this the ideal street/travel camera. Thanks for your kind words.
Maarten, thank you for your excellent review. 100% useful content with no filler, delivered in a detailed and interesting way. I think you have the balance between neutral review and opinion absolutely spot on. I have just discovered your channel today and have of course subscribed.
So kind of you to say, thanks for commenting and subscribing.
Why is Fujifilm not paying you for this video? Not even their marketing team can produce something as comprehensive as this. Thank you Maarteen.
Well, if they paid me, I'd have to say nice things and not everything I'd like to say. I'm pretty happy with the status quo.

First Fuji camera I'm seriously considering buying, so pretty.
I find the silver one prettier than the black, but both take great photos.
I just got the all black. Love it. Mounting one of the small F2 primes makes this an awesome compact setup.
Agreed, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I lost a lot of money on photography and now the only camera I consider is that of the smartphone.
Always nice to hear from a viewer who has a photography solution that pleases.
Maarten - thank you for teaching me a great deal about my Fuji GFX 50r - the menu being so similar to the XE-3. Well done!!

I appreciate your kind words, thank you. It's more like a mouse, if I understand your description.
Extraordinarily useful - as a newcomer to Fuji photography, I need to keep this and play it to myself (slowly!) every day for the next month or so. Thank you!
That's very kind, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Just found your channel. Very well done. Clear, concise, intelligently presented with no "umma" or "ahh". Have you presented a video for an x100s? Thanks again.
Thank you for your kind words, appreciated. No, I don't believe I did.
Maarten Heilbron another possible work around is the Gariz leather case that shifts the tripod jack to the center.
Thank you for that suggestion.
Thank you SO MUCH for this detailed review. I recently got an X-E3 and learned a lot about its functionality which I did not pick up from the manual: Very helpful!!
Thanks, always nice to hear that my videos are helpful and appreciated.
So how do you like the XE3
I really enjoy your reviews. So patient, so easy to follow. Godsend with all these tedious Fuji menus!
I appreciate your kind words, thanks for commenting.
3 years on, I have just received my second hand XE3, so far the only thing I don't like is that it is no longer possible to program the Fn button to start recording video. Great informative film, thanks.
I have no idea why they did that. Thanks for your kind words.
Hi Maarten,
Surely I will never use all the possibilities of the Fuji XE-3, but I am very attracted by its appearance of apparent simplicity.
Your camera reviews are the best
That's very kind, I appreciate your comment.
You always do the best reviews
How nice to read your kind words, thanks!
You are simply - The Best!! Alway enjoy your reviews, they are so detailed to get to know my camera! Thank you, Maarten!
Thanks for the kind words, always nice to know my videos are appreciated.
Always love your reviews, unique style and always on point, very good job :)
That was very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
You come across so well and your reviews just, make sense. Thank you Maarten.
It was a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words. I hope you're right.
sir your voice is a delight to hear and thanks for the detailed review
How kind of you to say, thanks very much for taking the time to comment.
Awesome review. Thanks for those details!!! One of the best reviews I have seen in my opinion!
How kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
What is rear dial ?
@@eyalgolan251 The dial on the back of the camera.
Thank you for the detailed review. Is "downgraded" chrome setting a decent replacement for flog video mode?
Hi Maarten,
I like the film simulation that Fuji offers in the X-E3. Is that option only available in camera or can it be applied in post?
If it's not available in post, is it possible to record a JPEG with the film simulation and record a RAW image without?
It can be applied in post - both in camera and using a free desktop app provided by Fuji. You can record a JPEG with and RAW without.
Always nice to know my videos have been helpful. Thanks for your kind words.
Great video, thank you. I'm curious what you think about the (smaller compared to X-E2s) EVF together with glasses.
I didn't have any issues - but I've seen someone who doesn't wear glasses complaining. You'll have to check it out for yourself. I think the diopter adjustment for my prescription makes an adjustment so that I'm not affected.
thanks!
Always my pleasure
Great explanation, congratulations Maarten. But I have a question, how can the focus of the shutter button be dissociated? Thank you very much.
I no longer have an X-E3 here to check, but on most Fujifilm models, just use manual focus and then assign a button to AF-On to focus.
Hi! Excellent review. Do you think I'd be okay looking through the evf with my left eye instead of right? I scared there'll be some interference with the touch screen, or just uncomfortable in general...
I suggest that the best way to find out is to go to a dealer and try it out for yourself.
I was waiting so Much for this review very good job
Happy to hear that I provided information you were waiting for. Thanks for the kind words.
If it's not too late: ruclips.net/video/zm06VJB7k6c/видео.html
Is there viewfinder blur edge issue you found on this camera? I see some glasses wearer users on FB group experienced it, they say glasses wearer can't see the whole viewfinder screen, they need to move the camera to see the edges, is this true?
I have seen that issue raised, but did not observe that. I had no problems seeing the whole screen, but I did adjust the diopter for my prescription.
Thank you
I find both easy to sue, but if you are familiar with photography and use modes other than Auto and Program, you'd likely prefer the X-T20.
Maarten Heilbron thanks Maarten you’re awesome! And in terms of the lens kit of the two ? Ine with the 23mm and te other with the 18-55mm?
Make that "easy to use" (aarrgghh). Unless you have a specific need to limit yourself to 35mm equivalent, the 18-55 is a versatile choice - and Fuji's kit lenses tend to be higher quality than most.
Here's the comparison: ruclips.net/video/zm06VJB7k6c/видео.html
I'd be interested in your comparison of the Fuji X-E3 with the Leica TL2. Both cameras have touch screens, the same size sensor, and are close in size. The Leica lacks a built-in electronic viewfinder and is over twice the cost. How do they compare in image quality? Handling? Operation? Apart from the general aura of Leica projects, are there photographic advantages to the Leica over the Fuji?
The TL2 is on my todo list, I hope to get to it soon.
Great Marteen
Will u make a "Best Video Settings" for the XE3?
thanks!!!!
Didn’t have time while I was reviewing ... sorry, but I’ve logged that as a request.
Love the review! Very detailed. Can you please confirm if this camera fires external flash on burst? My X-T100 disables flash menu when I select burst. I want to trigger off camera flash on burst mode. Looking for a cheap upgrade.. X-E3 checks all the right boxes.
The camera is no longer here, so I'm not able to confirm that. Have you tried contacting Fujifilm?
B&H Photo has them on sale for $499. Picked mine up a few days ago. It's the perfect daily carry camera.
That's a good deal.
Is there any possible way to turn off all forms of AE. I want complete control of my exposure dial without affecting any other settings ? Please help
Of course, I thought I covered that in the video - but to be clear, turn the switch off "auto", and the make sure that the ISO, shutter and aperture settings are not at A - that will give you full manual control.
own the x3 for almost one year. every time a watch your video a learn again. I will never understand it as detailed as you do. thx
Wow, I certainly appreciate your kind words. It's always a pleasure to know that my videos are useful.
Great video!!! Just picked one up and can’t wait to use all the features you showed
What a perfect comment - I'm always happy to help viewers find new features and reasons to go out shooting.
Maarten Heilbron Can't wait! Subscribed already. Cheers!
Appreciated, thanks.
Here's that comparison ruclips.net/video/zm06VJB7k6c/видео.html
Maarten Heilbron Watching it right now. Thanks!
Maarten Heilbron Thanks Martin! I appreciate your time.
@@buddah610 always happy to help.
Very helpful and well structured walkthrough. Thank you.
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Hi sir, thank you very much for this comprehensive review. Would you be able to recommend other fuji models with similar specs but with a tilting screen?
The Fujifilm X-T30.
If you had to pick this the X-T20, or X-T2 (or even X-Pro2 ), which would you prefer and why?
Thank you! One last question, why is your slight preference to the X-T20 over the X-E3?
The only real difference is the swivel screen.

I find that with my glasses on I often can't see the whole scene in the viewfinder (this is true of most brands).
hi. do you know if doube pressing the navigator button return the focus squere to the middle of the screen or is it like with the xs10 ? tnx
Yes, press to return to centre.
@@MaartenHeilbron thank you. Its a shame the evf is even smaller rhen the previous models. Its like they dont think people also shoot from evf and not only the back screen..also when the camera is hanging from the neck it operates the tuch screen sometimes. So weird they havnt thought about this things....
I wish they would invite us to the product management planning meetings.
Great video! I have a question, how do you ebable the camera to set iso extensions? Thanks
There is no setting. What mode are you in? What is the available range?
@@MaartenHeilbron i mainly use s and m mode, with ms+es shutter, the limit is between 200 and 12800, the iso L and H settings are displayed but not settable for some reason. Maybe these functions are locked by some other setting but i can't find anything regarding that on the user manual.
@@doo_daw RAW+JPEG? (try JPEG only). Movie mode?
@@MaartenHeilbron i already shoot at jpeg only, i tried jpeg+raw and raw only and still these settings are obscured, in video mode it's just native 200-12800 no extension. Maybe i should ask fuji directly 😂
Problem solved! Extended iso only works with mechanical shutter.
RX10 and RX100 cameras lineup are perfect but since they are fixed lens, not sure should I get one of them as first camera, RX100 I can take it to anywhere, RX10 is a little bigger than A7 so end up in a sling bag too so choosing it should compare to A7 lineup usability scenarios, if I get RX100 I not sure it is good to shoot and learn manual or I will end up shoot auto all the time because it's too small and hard to control
I believe majority I will shoot close distance and landscape and artitechure style of distance, bird and sky and moon are something I like to try when I get a real camera, sometime but rarely I might shoot live performance, and if I get a interchangeable camera, I will just get a lens to shoot for long first because I still have other things I want to buy and invest in my next plan and dreams, so a 35mm(or 23 in APSC camera term) lens is what I will get first
X100F I not sure if it should still in the list of consideration or think of this lineup again when they bring 4K, touchscreen, and better shaper lens on it first on the next one
iPhone X? 4K 60fps, low bit rate but I sure the quality will still great, and it's a phone so it cover everything on the go, just use it to do everything and not replaceable battery which will be a pain when battery low, and I was in a trip where the weather is very hot under the bright sunny day, I can't shoot video because the phone is too hot, I guess if I depend on my phone to do so much stuffs will make the lifespan of my phone shorter too which is not great for a kidney price phone
I hope you can give me some opinions on this!
Get a grip. You obviously don’t know what’s what in the million reviews you see. Learn some photo and decisions will be answered by experience.
Is there any chance that you will re-review the x-pro2 after the *alleged* big firmware update coming? Thanks for your always in depth and thorough reviews.
Good suggestion, let me ask Fuji if they'll have one to lend after the firmware update.
Did fuji improved the camera's features with firmware uptades since at the time that you did review it?
I have not had the chance to revisit the X-E3 since the latest firmware release.
I noticed that on my Xe3 the screen squeeks a little when you tab on the left side of it and can be pushed in a little bit. Is this normal? Could humidity get in the camera throught that? Thanks in advance for helping out! Great video, as always!
I have returned the camera to Fujifilm Canada, so can't check that - if it worries you, I'd suggest you go back to your dealer to check another X-E3.
Mr Heilbron, your continued efforts in putting out great reviews border on the sublime. Thank you very much. I know that you have a detailed X-E3-X-T20 comparison, but another one with the updated firmware would also be very interesting. Thank you.
That's very kind of you to say, thanks. While I agree with you, and I'll do my best, I already have a full editorial schedule for the next few months.
@@andi Good decision, although that was not one of the alternatives you proposed to me.

Lovely video Maarten!! Thanks!. But let me ask you, did you use acros for B&W?. Thanks again!.
Yes I did. I appreciate your kind words, thanks.
Great review, many thanks for the clarity. Would you recommend this camera (ergonomics, easiness of use) for a beginner intending to do mainly portraits (black and white, love the Acros). Thx a lot.
Yes, that seems like a good use, although you might like a more portrait-oriented lens.
Thx; Just tried the XE-3 ina shop as well as the X100F. I found the X100F eaisier to hold. I just wonder if the image quality will be the same or JPEG, despite the unique lens. For photos up to A4 format.
it is a fixed lens, which removes some flexibility - but I think the quality is high and certainly would not be material up to A4.
Ok thx. I ll chack again the lenses . May i ask which one(s) would u recommend for portraits (not only close up, but also shooting full body) ?
I'd consider the 23mmF2 (a favourite of the FujiGuys) and the 56mmF1.2 for closer work.
Zeiss Touit 12mm for wide
Fuji 16-55 or 18-55 if need IS
Fuji 16/1.4 or 23/1.4 depending on preference
Thanks for sharing your list.
How much of an issue is Image Stabilization or the lack of?
That depends a great deal on what you are photographing, and the conditions where you are shooting. In general, it would not be a feature I would consider significant.
