The 27mm "pancake" lens is probably my favorite "walk-about" lens. That 40mm-equivalent view seems to be my sweet spot. It's what ends up on my X-Pro2 probably close to 90% of the time, as I use that body mainly for what you seem to be describing: just going out and capturing whatever catches my eye.
@@calebbohrer3757 I've not had a problem, though might be tight if wearing winter gloves. My only complaint in that regard is that if you happen to accidentally twist it over to the Auto setting, you then have to press on the little red button to unlock it to go back to a manual setting.
The 40-ish mm focal length might seem a bit odd at first or if someone’s never used it before, but once you get used to it, it’s a fantastic length! I often use a 43mm lens (FF) and it’s awesome that it’s tight in framing yet it’s still wide enough to leave environment open. I’m hoping to try this Fuji 27mm sometime and see how similar it is to my 43mm. Is the AF really that bad as people make it out to be on the 27mm?
@@calebbohrer3757 you can control the aperture SLR style with the front control dial if you put the aperture ring on the lens into "Auto", Fuji really did a fantastic job at catering to all shooting styles imo
As the owner of a X-T4 I was admittedly a Fuji Fan Boy (it’s an illness to be sure) but I procured the X-PRO3 last year for the same exact reason, because I enjoy the experience of the quasi-rangefinder as well as the look and feel of the camera. It calls me from the shelf like the siren song, tempting me to go out and shoot something! Cheers to you and your pro sandwich. 🥪
I use the X-Pro3 professionally including weddings. There is something special about the OVF and being able to see what is and what is not in your composition. Additionally, when photographing people it’s much more pleasant and less intimidating being photographed by this camera. I hope Fujifilm continues this design with the new 40MP sensor.
I'm considering going back to street photography. My full frame mirrorless is great feature-wise, but it's not much smaller than the old bulky DSLRs... These days I gravitate towards small and light for "fun assignments" and casual shots. Love a film point and shoot for that. Would the X-Pro3 (with say 23mm f2) fit comfortably in the pocket of a jacket?
My favorite camera ever. I love the process of taking photos but don't care much for post-processing them. With X-Pro 3 I can still get the kinds of stylized results that I want. And the ergonomics are just perfect for me.
The thing I like about the XPro cameras is that they, and the small Fuji primes, are the ideal size, weight and shape for those casual 'wandering about taking pictures' outings, but with pretty much no compromises on image quality.
And also no compromise on flexibility. You can *still* put a Superzoom lens on if you want. Got myself a Xpro2 in 2019 and I absolutely love that camera
That’s why I bought the XPro1, I had a Canon 7D/100-400 plus the 10-20 Sigma, 17-55/2.8 Canon and the 105/2.8 Sigma macro. The weight of my kit with a steel tripod was terrible and I wasn’t taking the camera out of the bag on family outings. So, I bought into the Fuji X-Pro1 with the 18/2, 35/1.4 and later the 56/1.2. Together in a messenger bag it weighed virtually nothing, I later added the Manfrotto BeFree carbon fibre tripod and an X-T1 and family trips were transformed and nearly 10 years later I still have the same set up. My other kit now consists of an R6 with the 500/4 but I still don’t feel my older Fuji kit has any shortcomings IQ wise.
James, I don't mind gear-centered videos when the photographer can take great photos, which you definitely can. A shocking number of photography channels on RUclips where the actual photographs are trash. Thanks for all the great content.
I almost never comment and haven't subscribed to anyone in what feels like years on RUclips. While looking into pocketable travel cameras I came across your channel and I just wanted to say, your content is incredible refreshing. So much content on RUclips in the camera genre is basically like reading a spec sheet on steroids or is a glitzy portfolio or sales pitch of the creator. I use an X-Pro2 with two primes (18mm f2 & 35mm f1.4). I really haven't a bad word to say about it. I'd go so far as to say it is one of the most complete setups (for me and the way I shoot) I've owned. If you've the time and the inclination, try out some of the Fuji recipes, very worthwhile!
I don’t know about matching the image quality of your Sony but those shots of Brighton look beautiful. Don’t know how you post process but they remind me of what I love about Portra - clean, clear, beautiful colour and somehow relaxing on the eye (not too saturated or contrasty - yet still ‘rich’ - in a way many digital images seem to be).
I recently picked up an X-Pro 3 and it is exactly what I needed to fall back in love with photography and regain some focus in my pursuit of making photographs. I only post on Instagram currently so grabbing the JPEGs straight from the camera and posting with no edits is such a quick and easy process.
Downside being that trying to buy anything used from them is pretty much impossible because people are now charging too much for these cameras. Prepare to hunt for a while to get a decent deal on any ok used fuji camera at this point.
@@tosvus I agree. There's a lot of artificial inflation in prices in photography in general these days. Film, film cameras, digital cameras (DSLR or Mirrorless) are all experiencing unreasonable pricing. 🤷
Just got mine a few days ago. Was surprised to find out the day after I got it that Fuji discontinued it. There’s still no official update of an xpro 4 so let us enjoy our possible future Classic xpro 3 camera. Even if it’s a few years older, I would have never known. The processor is fantastic. I decided on the 23mm f2 fujinon r wr and couldn’t be happier. It’s the same length and aperture as my Leica Summicron 23mm f2, but focuses much closer, is weather sealed, etc. really enjoying the camera so far. Sadly, the Leica TL2 has just been sitting in its bag ever since the Fuji arrived. I started photography in the film era and this xpro 3 digital cam is the closest thing I’ve used yet to take me back to the experience of shooting a film camera.
I bought my X Pro 3 for my trip in Amsterdam. It’s ongoing as I am typing this. The camera has amazed me. I bought it because I didn’t want to carry my heavy 5D iii and I felt it would grab too much attention towards me that will make the photos look inauthentic. I got the X Pro 3 Simple for the fact that the screen was hidden. I loved that. I wanted to be immersed in the city, not fidgeting with my camera. My eyes are the viewfinder, I just use the optical viewfinder to frame what I see. It’s beautiful, simple, elegant. At night I unload the photos and wrestle with them in Lightroom. Such a pleasure wouldn’t have been felt with my 5D, because they come out not needing much editing. Whoever made this camera has balls to be brave to actually make it in a world where most people won’t care. It’s a daring camera made by daring people and it encourages me to be daring to complete the chain. It withstood heavy rains and storms with me. I went during harsh conditions because that’s what a person with this camera does, nothing stops it so nothing should stop the photographer. I finally feel like a kid with my cheap toy camera again, but this one is much more of a beast in every way and shape.

Completely and utterly agree with the theory. Unfortunately I picked up an X-Pro3 and realised that ~70% of my need for an EDC/Smaller camera is filming/photographing my kiddo. And to do that I didn't quite realise how much I used the screen. Absolutely adore the x-pro3 but just not for me. Hopefully (selfishly) the x-Pro4 returns to the conventional screen and I'll upgrade from my x-e4 straight away. Currently use that as my EDC with the 18f2 and 27f2.8. Perfect.
This is the most fun and beautiful camera I used. Looks great, holds great, lenses are great. Sometimes I miss a screen for vertical shots and for when taking pictures very close to myself. However I learned to hip fire without looking.

I've recently, after a long time off, gotten back into photography. I bought a Canon 5D mkii before my first child and loved it. The more children I had the less I wanted to lug around a big, heavy full frame beast, so it gathered dust for years. I finally traded it in with the lenses and bought a Fuji xt30ii yesterday - it's so small and light. I wish I'd done it years ago!
James, the X-Pro3 is my all-time favourite camera from Fujifilm. I've owned the X, X-E, X-T, and X-H series cameras and with the X-Pro3 they got it right. I'm mostly a street, documentary, and reportage photography who every now and then does some portrait work. The X-Pro3 fits nicely with my Leica M240 kit because I can use my M mount lenses on both cameras, with an adapter of course for the X-Pro3. Lastly, the X-Pro3 is NOT a rangefinder. It's a regular mirrorless camera with an EVF but also has an OVF to mimic a rangefinder. The only companies making actual mirrorless rangefinders are Leica and the French company Pixii. Enjoy your X-Pro3, it's a great camera and pairs up nicely with any of the digital Leica M's in your kit.
Correct me If I'm wrong but I don't think we can call the XPRO3 a range finder. It's just an offset view finder. It has no moving glass that's coupled and synchronized with the focusing of the lens like we can find on a Leica. Personally I didn't like viewfinder. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice hybrid technology but not as good as I thought. I ended up using the evf most of the time. The magnification is not enough when only using the OVF and the back eye piece opening is too small to see the whole scene when I wear my glasses and they're very small. It barely get better with contact lenses. The EVF is way more precise to frame the shot than those approximative bright lines.

i can so highly recommend the X-Pro1... the old Fuji sensors are absolutely pure magic... the colors that come out of it trump even Leica digital colors... and the camera just doesn't get in your way... the X-Pro1 with the 27mm (or Viltrox 23mm for example) are a super cheap and enjoyable experience! And there's plenty on the used market in really great quality for next to nothing
I remember when the first X-Pro came out, and it really intrigued me at the time. Unfortunately I didn’t (and still don’t) have the disposable income to try it out. I’d still like to try a Fuji camera at some point. I’ve heard their colors are wonderful.
They are! I love film having grown up with it and tried and struggled with digital for so long, trying all sorts and wasting money stupidly. I have now moved from Leica via Canon and Sony to Fuji (an XT2 first then an XH1 at 1/3 new price for a mint copy) and VERY happy I did.
Nice to see that you're going with your own style rather than capitualiting to the Fujifilm look. I recommend the 16f2.8 if you want to go wide ever. Mine is basically glued to the camera. Also, the 50f2 over the 1.2 aperture one if you want to go longer.
re: own style, is there a recommendation for how to standardize styles across camera manufacturers? like a "pre-style" to get each base image to a neutral point?
I'm interested in the 16/2.8 for an X-T1 I just bought. But I've seen varying reports about it's sharpness from users. It does make Fuji's "40 mp list" though.
@@jshanni2066 The large majority of Fujifilm users are probably the most unreliable pack of nitpicky whiners tbh. The 16f2.8 is great, and if it made the 40mp list, what more do we need? A lot of people want to compare everything to full frame or the new 18f1.4, unironically ignoring the fact that those are way bigger, heavier, more expensive lenses. I love mine, the quality is great, and the size, weight and price are amazing.
@@noahkiss Shoot in raw, import to lightroom and use the Adobe colour standard profile as a base for your edit. I imagine James does exactly that. There's no way for jpeg shooters to do it.
Fuji is definitely a great compliment to Sony! That's my combo. XE-4 for fun and around town and A7ii for the heavier work (needs upgrading soon lol). The analog nature of the fuji is great. Really debating on jumping to the XT5.
I am debating the XT5 as well. Coming from a Sony A7ii (which I plan on keeping). I am up in the air whether to get a smaller Sony body or go for a Fuji for travel.
@@DJKISSchitown Fuji is great so far! Just be aware there aren’t as many custom buttons vs the a7ii. Can be a little tricky getting used to for some ppl.
Love your style James! You're one of my favorite photography vloggers. I love this style where you let us see what your eye was seeing (with GoPro) and then how the photo actually turned out after editing. One thing, and you may disagree for the fact you want us focusing on the art and not settings, but it would be helpful for us to see the exposure settings to be listed at the bottom or something. Keep up the good work! (the X-Pro3 is discontinued because they are releasing the X-Pro4 this year)
Bought it used, shot with it and I hated it. Sold it for a small profit and bought an X-Pro2. Couldn't be happier. The '2 is about 90-95% the camera that the '3 is IMO for half the price used.
The back screen is definitely not useless. It gives me enormous pleasure. First because of what it is not. Secondly because it tells me which custom profile, white balance and ISO settings are selected before I even turn the camera on. Once the camera is turned on, it allows me to scroll through my custom profiles and select a new one without anyone seeing what I'm up to.
Fuji is is fun for those who love the process of taking pictures as much as the outcome .. x100v the next one? Or perhaps film photography? Have fun, mate 🎉
Nice choice of buying a Fuji. 🙌 But please don’t call it just rangefinder. It’s a OVF that looks like a rangefinder but has no rangefinder focusing system. You can call it rangefinder style camera. Keep up the good work.
@@CianMcsweeney Yes that would be really cool but won't happen since a rangefinder needs calibration and fuji probably isn't interested in having additional costs due to that.

@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel yeah, that's why I'm thinking that maybe the way they could/should go is to try and provide a better digital simulation of the rangefinder patch within the OVF, could basically be done entirely in software without needing additional expensive hardware. The main problem right now with manually focusing using the OVF on the x-pro is that you need to look at the evf patch on the lower right side, taking your eye away from the center of the frame. If they could use the OLED used for the Ovf's heads up display to superimpose a split image on the focus point then you'd be 90% of the way to emulating a full rangefinder experience
Next time you feel urge to spend money for fun try Pentax KP (or K-3 Mk III if you want to spent more) and 20-40mm Limited. KP is no longer produced but should be available new somewhere on amazon and if not there is a ton of used ones. You will have interesting time with real pentaprism DSLR and most funny lens I personally ever used. Only prime zoom I ever got into my hands (I know it sounds silly). Plus both are weathersealed and build like tanks.

It's a big, full-featured camera in a small package with a combined LCD/optical viewfinder, with superimposed, zoomable, live parallax-adjusting framelines and AF. What's not to like?
If there is not a "pro" sandwich, there soon will be! Amazed you didn't stumble over another photographer in Brighton, I can think of three RUclips channels that feature that beach on a regular basis. Really makes me wish I'd stopped when I was over the pond in Oct.! FWIW, I like the videos, gear or photos. Fujifilm is my favorite camera out of all other brands. I owned an X-T3, it makes me want to go out and shoot! That's something special about Fujifilm.
got the X-Pro3 and didn't really enjoy it that much... mainly because i prefer the OVF in the X-Pro2... which is my favorite camera... closely followed by the X-Pro1 (which i think the X-Trans1 still has the nicest colors ever made on a digital sensor) what makes me enjoy the X-Pro line so much is that it is a photo first camera.... everyone else makes cameras these days that are video first with photography as an afterthought... Sony being the biggest offender.... i don't need lightning fast autofocus or 1000k Video resolution... i need a camera that doesn't get in the way of me shooting... i don't want to go through 15 menus to change aperture... i don't want to fiddle with useless autofocus settings... i want to press the shutter and the camera takes a picture... Fuji cameras (Exclusing their PSAM dial cameras) do exactly that... and for photography it's the X-Pro line... they're just enjoyable... they look nice they feel nice they're light and the lenses are perfect... what else could you want as a photographer? And i very much enjoy that they're APS-C... i shoot ultrawide rarely... and the 90&56mm or the viltrox 85&75mm offer all the bokeh you could ever want... and when i need to shoot something tele... i don't need 3 people holding the lens because it's so heavy... the world needs more Photo first cameras... sadly other than Pentax/Ricoh and Fuji (and they're also big offenders) it's always video first on mirrorless... hopefully there will be an X-Pro4 soon
Yes there is lots of videos about new gear, but the difference is you've said a bit about it then gone out and used it whilst filming, rather than just sitting in the office chatting about all its specs and features. Means that your gear videos are like your others but just feature around a piece of kit rather than a technique, wouldn't imagine anyone is particularly bothered about the variation, I like it even though its not gear I'm after or likely to own.
I greatly enjoy your videos, gear-based or photo inspired. You have managed to keep my attention, which is quite a challenge as many others that I have shut down halfway through. You my friend are definitely PRO.
I love my xpro3 it’s an incredible body never ever let you down super fast autofocus and amazing monitor/evf. Couldn’t ask more from an xpro, will be in my bag for the next years as my old x100 has been there for 12 years.
There's a 50/50 chance that the photographer at 6:00 was Gordon Laing doing a gear test. That's his usual spot. Fuji US still lists the X-Pro 3 but it's out of stock there, as well as B&H. I wonder if it's a supply chain issue. There's nothing but speculation out there; no substance.
Mr Popsys - Love the framing and color grading (need I add - composition?) of the images. Having said this, I would like to point out a few fantastic features of your Sony camera to the wonderful viewers of this channel. 1st - the rotary dial. It does so much and always comes back around for more. 2nd - I think it's the letter "M" engraved and painted on top of said rotary dial. It could be some Greek letter, though. These two things, combined with either a full manual vintage lens or a modern pancake lens, transform your thick, massive Sony branded tool into a svelte, spry, sassy little whip of a gadget that might - just might, turn out to be a ton of fun. I realize two (or 200) tools are always better to have lying around than just one - each with a distinct use case. Gear is its own reward - own and use as much as you like. One day you may review a tool I want in my own..... Collection. Please do not devalue the end result(s) you get from whichever camera you use. I also enjoy what it is about a scene you like or are reminded of. I think the way you see the world is probably the most rewarding part of your videos. Thank you.
To be honest, I liked the lighting in the GoPro video more than the results of the Fuji camera shots. The Fuji shots look blown out in the highlights and kind of washed out. There was much more dynamic range in the GoPro video at the time you took the shots. Do you find this as well? Did you choose to pseudo wash out the images, or are these RAW images you're showing?
For a Fuji camera, the xpro3 is Pro line (and I’m sure for other brands and models too): Titanium built, weather sealed, dual card slot, metal top dials (not plastic like the x-t5), mechanical shutter speed up to 1/8000 (a dream for Leica 😅)… and up to 32000 for electronic shutter. Specs wise, it looks pretty Pro to me when looking to the options on this rangefinder league.
I'm still enjoying my xt-3 years later. I think Fuji make cameras fun to use, and fun to experiment with too. Their autofocus (or other features) probably isn't reliable enough for professional use, but I'm only a hobbyist photographer.
there is just something about fujifilm :) I have an x-t2 as my first camera, and i will never settle for any other brand. Neither am i professional, just hobbyist. just simply love fujifilm for its design , colors, simulations, price/weight/quality/ and SHARPNESS.
James. Really like your work and always entertaining. Am I missing something? As you point the video around I'm seeing great saturated colours and images. The moon looks great and the clouds nice and fluffy. Then you take the shot and they look washed out and like old 35mm film. Was that the aim, looking retro? Sorry, I hate being negative but I think it might be I missed something. Was it to show straight from camera images with no editing? Still enjoyed the video. Brighton used to be our go to place after parties when I was a Teen.
I do own an XPro3, I hope I don't have the LCD ribbon failure problem that some people report. It will be interesting to see if there is an XPro4, and how they address this ribbon failure problem....and of course if they will take care of XPro3 owners...so far people seem to have to pay for the repair.
Got an Xpro-3 recently and it’s my favorite camera of all time. Especially after customizing the film look myself. It’s got that IT factor that digital is generally missing from film
Lovely light in Brighton that morning, but a lot of your photos from the X-Pro3 look overexposed and flat to me. The sky has just completely gone in most of them. You've got a superb glow from the sunrise but it's completely lost in the final image. Were they straight out of camera JPEGs or have they been edited?
Reading the comments I didn't realize how many XPro shooters there are! I've used the XPro 2 & 3 professionally for over five years now for commercial/fashion/product. I love that the same camera I use for work is the same camera I use to photograph my kid and family. No doubt the Sony/Nikkon/Canon are wonderful, but for me, if the job calls for a bit more, I just rent the GFX and bill the client for the rental. Otherwise, I've not once had a client care it's crop. I have paired it with a full Broncolor system so the lighting makes the fuji xpro3 sing. Once you've dialed in your look in the profiles and save them (I have one for color and one for BW) 100% of my personal shots are JPG with my look applied and 100% of my commercial work is on a color checker and RAWs. Literally the best of both worlds. Cheers mate and enjoy the best quirky camera out there!
Just like you, I have gone through the M4/3 to FF path and ended up all in with Fuji. You will be there soon too. Maybe will end up replacing your FF with APS C first and ultimately go to their medium format cameras
Fuji’s X-E4, X100V and X-Pro3 are such a wonderful cameras! X-E4 is pretty much just exchangeable lense version of X100V (but you do lose some features like leaf shutter and weather sealing). X-Pro3 in the other hand has best things from both cameras!
For some reason it's rare and overpriced now, but it was not in May 2021 ... well ... it was overpriced, but 15 or 20% cheaper than today. I basically bought it knowing that Panasonic GF1 with 20mm/f1.7 lens was my most used camera. Now X100V complements my Panasonic G80. I sort of knew that when I'll buy interchangeable lens camera, it will be more expensive in long run and I would likely end with whole new system that mostly stays at home. Panasonic is by far more versatile having zoom, image stabilization, it focuses faster, it can record 4k video without overheating in two minutes if I want to, it has more consistent and better white balance (yes, sadly fuji can make foto in rainy forest look blueish, despite everything is brown or green), but I use it like few times a year, because Fuji is more fun to use, sometimes better, almost always good enough and I have it nearly always with me. Having 35mm or 40mm equivalent is perfect for social events, indoor use, city walks, photos of some details cause it focuses from maybe 3cm ... Of coarse, if I want wide angle, telephoto, portrait lens, versatile travel camera, i take one with interchangeable lens.

I have an X100F in my wedding kit, and over time the hybrid OVF has become a bit unreliable, occasionally getting stuck halfway(I think sand got in it on one of our beach excursions). Wanted to replace it with an X100V, but not at the absurdly inflated prices they're currently at.
I plan on buyong xpro4 later to pair with my z7-2 also next year. Compact Camera with ofv like rangefinder very critical for my kind of photo: street photo arts and culinary

I've got the same setup! It was my first prime as well and yep I've yet to feel the need for a second lens.

As the owner of a X-T4 I was admittedly a Fuji Fan Boy (it’s an illness to be sure) but I procured the X-PRO3 last year for the same exact reason, because I enjoy the experience of the quasi-rangefinder as well as the look and feel of the camera. It calls me from the shelf like the siren song, tempting me to go out and shoot something! Cheers to you and your pro sandwich. 🥪
I use the X-Pro3 professionally including weddings. There is something special about the OVF and being able to see what is and what is not in your composition. Additionally, when photographing people it’s much more pleasant and less intimidating being photographed by this camera. I hope Fujifilm continues this design with the new 40MP sensor.
I'm considering going back to street photography. My full frame mirrorless is great feature-wise, but it's not much smaller than the old bulky DSLRs...
These days I gravitate towards small and light for "fun assignments" and casual shots. Love a film point and shoot for that.

My favorite camera ever. I love the process of taking photos but don't care much for post-processing them. With X-Pro 3 I can still get the kinds of stylized results that I want. And the ergonomics are just perfect for me.
The thing I like about the XPro cameras is that they, and the small Fuji primes, are the ideal size, weight and shape for those casual 'wandering about taking pictures' outings, but with pretty much no compromises on image quality.
And also no compromise on flexibility. You can *still* put a Superzoom lens on if you want. Got myself a Xpro2 in 2019 and I absolutely love that camera
That’s why I bought the XPro1, I had a Canon 7D/100-400 plus the 10-20 Sigma, 17-55/2.8 Canon and the 105/2.8 Sigma macro. The weight of my kit with a steel tripod was terrible and I wasn’t taking the camera out of the bag on family outings. So, I bought into the Fuji X-Pro1 with the 18/2, 35/1.4 and later the 56/1.2. Together in a messenger bag it weighed virtually nothing, I later added the Manfrotto BeFree carbon fibre tripod and an X-T1 and family trips were transformed and nearly 10 years later I still have the same set up.
My other kit now consists of an R6 with the 500/4 but I still don’t feel my older Fuji kit has any shortcomings IQ wise.

I use an X-Pro2 with two primes (18mm f2 & 35mm f1.4). I really haven't a bad word to say about it. I'd go so far as to say it is one of the most complete setups (for me and the way I shoot) I've owned. If you've the time and the inclination, try out some of the Fuji recipes, very worthwhile!
I don’t know about matching the image quality of your Sony but those shots of Brighton look beautiful. Don’t know how you post process but they remind me of what I love about Portra - clean, clear, beautiful colour and somehow relaxing on the eye (not too saturated or contrasty - yet still ‘rich’ - in a way many digital images seem to be).
I recently picked up an X-Pro 3 and it is exactly what I needed to fall back in love with photography and regain some focus in my pursuit of making photographs. I only post on Instagram currently so grabbing the JPEGs straight from the camera and posting with no edits is such a quick and easy process.

It looks like Fuji has been getting a bit more attention in media recently. Glad to see it because I really enjoy Fujifilm.
Downside being that trying to buy anything used from them is pretty much impossible because people are now charging too much for these cameras. Prepare to hunt for a while to get a decent deal on any ok used fuji camera at this point.
@@tosvus I agree. There's a lot of artificial inflation in prices in photography in general these days. Film, film cameras, digital cameras (DSLR or Mirrorless) are all experiencing unreasonable pricing. 🤷
Just got mine a few days ago. Was surprised to find out the day after I got it that Fuji discontinued it. There’s still no official update of an xpro 4 so let us enjoy our possible future Classic xpro 3 camera. Even if it’s a few years older, I would have never known. The processor is fantastic. I decided on the 23mm f2 fujinon r wr and couldn’t be happier. It’s the same length and aperture as my Leica Summicron 23mm f2, but focuses much closer, is weather sealed, etc. really enjoying the camera so far. Sadly, the Leica TL2 has just been sitting in its bag ever since the Fuji arrived. I started photography in the film era and this xpro 3 digital cam is the closest thing I’ve used yet to take me back to the experience of shooting a film camera.
I bought my X Pro 3 for my trip in Amsterdam. It’s ongoing as I am typing this. The camera has amazed me. I bought it because I didn’t want to carry my heavy 5D iii and I felt it would grab too much attention towards me that will make the photos look inauthentic. I got the X Pro 3 Simple for the fact that the screen was hidden. I loved that. I wanted to be immersed in the city, not fidgeting with my camera. My eyes are the viewfinder, I just use the optical viewfinder to frame what I see. It’s beautiful, simple, elegant. At night I unload the photos and wrestle with them in Lightroom. Such a pleasure wouldn’t have been felt with my 5D, because they come out not needing much editing. Whoever made this camera has balls to be brave to actually make it in a world where most people won’t care. It’s a daring camera made by daring people and it encourages me to be daring to complete the chain. It withstood heavy rains and storms with me. I went during harsh conditions because that’s what a person with this camera does, nothing stops it so nothing should stop the photographer. I finally feel like a kid with my cheap toy camera again, but this one is much more of a beast in every way and shape.
Hello, I’m about to get the x-pro 3 for a good price. And I see you got the 5D iii l. Which image quality is better out these two cameras? As I was thinking to get a 5D iii due to its price approximately 1/3 x-pro price.

Completely and utterly agree with the theory. Unfortunately I picked up an X-Pro3 and realised that ~70% of my need for an EDC/Smaller camera is filming/photographing my kiddo. And to do that I didn't quite realise how much I used the screen. Absolutely adore the x-pro3 but just not for me. Hopefully (selfishly) the x-Pro4 returns to the conventional screen and I'll upgrade from my x-e4 straight away. Currently use that as my EDC with the 18f2 and 27f2.8. Perfect.

I had an X-Pro1 then replaced it with the X-Pro3. Both lovely cameras. Easy to use, a little quirky, great fun, and super imagery.

This is the most fun and beautiful camera I used.
Looks great, holds great, lenses are great. Sometimes I miss a screen for vertical shots and for when taking pictures very close to myself. However I learned to hip fire without looking.

I've recently, after a long time off, gotten back into photography. I bought a Canon 5D mkii before my first child and loved it. The more children I had the less I wanted to lug around a big, heavy full frame beast, so it gathered dust for years.
I finally traded it in with the lenses and bought a Fuji xt30ii yesterday - it's so small and light. I wish I'd done it years ago!

James, the X-Pro3 is my all-time favourite camera from Fujifilm. I've owned the X, X-E, X-T, and X-H series cameras and with the X-Pro3 they got it right. I'm mostly a street, documentary, and reportage photography who every now and then does some portrait work. The X-Pro3 fits nicely with my Leica M240 kit because I can use my M mount lenses on both cameras, with an adapter of course for the X-Pro3. Lastly, the X-Pro3 is NOT a rangefinder. It's a regular mirrorless camera with an EVF but also has an OVF to mimic a rangefinder.
The only companies making actual mirrorless rangefinders are Leica and the French company Pixii. Enjoy your X-Pro3, it's a great camera and pairs up nicely with any of the digital Leica M's in your kit.

Correct me If I'm wrong but I don't think we can call the XPRO3 a range finder. It's just an offset view finder. It has no moving glass that's coupled and synchronized with the focusing of the lens like we can find on a Leica.
Personally I didn't like viewfinder. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice hybrid technology but not as good as I thought. I ended up using the evf most of the time.
The magnification is not enough when only using the OVF and the back eye piece opening is too small to see the whole scene when I wear my glasses and they're very small. It barely get better with contact lenses. The EVF is way more precise to frame the shot than those approximative bright lines.

i can so highly recommend the X-Pro1... the old Fuji sensors are absolutely pure magic... the colors that come out of it trump even Leica digital colors... and the camera just doesn't get in your way... the X-Pro1 with the 27mm (or Viltrox 23mm for example) are a super cheap and enjoyable experience! And there's plenty on the used market in really great quality for next to nothing
I remember when the first X-Pro came out, and it really intrigued me at the time. Unfortunately I didn’t (and still don’t) have the disposable income to try it out. I’d still like to try a Fuji camera at some point. I’ve heard their colors are wonderful.
They are! I love film having grown up with it and tried and struggled with digital for so long, trying all sorts and wasting money stupidly. I have now moved from Leica via Canon and Sony to Fuji (an XT2 first then an XH1 at 1/3 new price for a mint copy) and VERY happy I did.
Nice to see that you're going with your own style rather than capitualiting to the Fujifilm look. I recommend the 16f2.8 if you want to go wide ever. Mine is basically glued to the camera. Also, the 50f2 over the 1.2 aperture one if you want to go longer.
re: own style, is there a recommendation for how to standardize styles across camera manufacturers? like a "pre-style" to get each base image to a neutral point?
I'm interested in the 16/2.8 for an X-T1 I just bought. But I've seen varying reports about it's sharpness from users. It does make Fuji's "40 mp list" though.
@@jshanni2066 The large majority of Fujifilm users are probably the most unreliable pack of nitpicky whiners tbh. The 16f2.8 is great, and if it made the 40mp list, what more do we need? A lot of people want to compare everything to full frame or the new 18f1.4, unironically ignoring the fact that those are way bigger, heavier, more expensive lenses.
I love mine, the quality is great, and the size, weight and price are amazing.
@@noahkiss Shoot in raw, import to lightroom and use the Adobe colour standard profile as a base for your edit. I imagine James does exactly that. There's no way for jpeg shooters to do it.

I liked the exposures from the GoPro better than the exposures from the Fuji. I think you had the exposure on the Fuji up to a stop too bright. YMMV.

Fuji is definitely a great compliment to Sony! That's my combo. XE-4 for fun and around town and A7ii for the heavier work (needs upgrading soon lol). The analog nature of the fuji is great. Really debating on jumping to the XT5.
I am debating the XT5 as well. Coming from a Sony A7ii (which I plan on keeping). I am up in the air whether to get a smaller Sony body or go for a Fuji for travel.
@@DJKISSchitown Fuji is great so far! Just be aware there aren’t as many custom buttons vs the a7ii. Can be a little tricky getting used to for some ppl.

Love your style James! You're one of my favorite photography vloggers. I love this style where you let us see what your eye was seeing (with GoPro) and then how the photo actually turned out after editing. One thing, and you may disagree for the fact you want us focusing on the art and not settings, but it would be helpful for us to see the exposure settings to be listed at the bottom or something. Keep up the good work! (the X-Pro3 is discontinued because they are releasing the X-Pro4 this year)
Bought it used, shot with it and I hated it. Sold it for a small profit and bought an X-Pro2. Couldn't be happier. The '2 is about 90-95% the camera that the '3 is IMO for half the price used.
The back screen is definitely not useless. It gives me enormous pleasure. First because of what it is not. Secondly because it tells me which custom profile, white balance and ISO settings are selected before I even turn the camera on. Once the camera is turned on, it allows me to scroll through my custom profiles and select a new one without anyone seeing what I'm up to.
Fuji is is fun for those who love the process of taking pictures as much as the outcome .. x100v the next one? Or perhaps film photography?

Nice choice of buying a Fuji. 🙌 But please don’t call it just rangefinder. It’s a OVF that looks like a rangefinder but has no rangefinder focusing system. You can call it rangefinder style camera. Keep up the good work.
I wish fujifilm would put a proper rangefinder in the X-Pro series, it's so close to being the perfect camera(for me that is lol)

@@CianMcsweeney Yes that would be really cool but won't happen since a rangefinder needs calibration and fuji probably isn't interested in having additional costs due to that.

@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel yeah, that's why I'm thinking that maybe the way they could/should go is to try and provide a better digital simulation of the rangefinder patch within the OVF, could basically be done entirely in software without needing additional expensive hardware. The main problem right now with manually focusing using the OVF on the x-pro is that you need to look at the evf patch on the lower right side, taking your eye away from the center of the frame. If they could use the OLED used for the Ovf's heads up display to superimpose a split image on the focus point then you'd be 90% of the way to emulating a full rangefinder experience
Next time you feel urge to spend money for fun try Pentax KP (or K-3 Mk III if you want to spent more) and 20-40mm Limited. KP is no longer produced but should be available new somewhere on amazon and if not there is a ton of used ones.
You will have interesting time with real pentaprism DSLR and most funny lens I personally ever used. Only prime zoom I ever got into my hands (I know it sounds silly). Plus both are weathersealed and build like tanks.

It's a big, full-featured camera in a small package with a combined LCD/optical viewfinder, with superimposed, zoomable, live parallax-adjusting framelines and AF. What's not to like?
If there is not a "pro" sandwich, there soon will be! Amazed you didn't stumble over another photographer in Brighton, I can think of three RUclips channels that feature that beach on a regular basis. Really makes me wish I'd stopped when I was over the pond in Oct.! FWIW, I like the videos, gear or photos. Interesting to hear your opinions on lots of subjects, I often get a laugh or at least a smile.

Fujifilm is my favorite camera out of all other brands. I owned an X-T3, it makes me want to go out and shoot! That's something special about Fujifilm.

got the X-Pro3 and didn't really enjoy it that much... mainly because i prefer the OVF in the X-Pro2... which is my favorite camera... closely followed by the X-Pro1 (which i think the X-Trans1 still has the nicest colors ever made on a digital sensor) what makes me enjoy the X-Pro line so much is that it is a photo first camera.... everyone else makes cameras these days that are video first with photography as an afterthought... Sony being the biggest offender.... i don't need lightning fast autofocus or 1000k Video resolution... i need a camera that doesn't get in the way of me shooting... i don't want to go through 15 menus to change aperture... i don't want to fiddle with useless autofocus settings... i want to press the shutter and the camera takes a picture... Fuji cameras (Exclusing their PSAM dial cameras) do exactly that... and for photography it's the X-Pro line... they're just enjoyable... they look nice they feel nice they're light and the lenses are perfect... what else could you want as a photographer?
And i very much enjoy that they're APS-C... i shoot ultrawide rarely... and the 90&56mm or the viltrox 85&75mm offer all the bokeh you could ever want... and when i need to shoot something tele... i don't need 3 people holding the lens because it's so heavy...
the world needs more Photo first cameras... sadly other than Pentax/Ricoh and Fuji (and they're also big offenders) it's always video first on mirrorless... hopefully there will be an X-Pro4 soon

Yes there is lots of videos about new gear, but the difference is you've said a bit about it then gone out and used it whilst filming, rather than just sitting in the office chatting about all its specs and features.
Means that your gear videos are like your others but just feature around a piece of kit rather than a technique, wouldn't imagine anyone is particularly bothered about the variation, I like it even though its not gear I'm after or likely to own.

I love my xpro3 it’s an incredible body never ever let you down super fast autofocus and amazing monitor/evf. Couldn’t ask more from an xpro, will be in my bag for the next years as my old x100 has been there for 12 years.

Fuji US still lists the X-Pro 3 but it's out of stock there, as well as B&H. I wonder if it's a supply chain issue. There's nothing but speculation out there; no substance.

Mr Popsys - Love the framing and color grading (need I add - composition?) of the images.
Having said this, I would like to point out a few fantastic features of your Sony camera to the wonderful viewers of this channel. 1st - the rotary dial. It does so much and always comes back around for more. 2nd - I think it's the letter "M" engraved and painted on top of said rotary dial. It could be some Greek letter, though. These two things, combined with either a full manual vintage lens or a modern pancake lens, transform your thick, massive Sony branded tool into a svelte, spry, sassy little whip of a gadget that might - just might, turn out to be a ton of fun.
I realize two (or 200) tools are always better to have lying around than just one - each with a distinct use case. Gear is its own reward - own and use as much as you like. One day you may review a tool I want in my own..... Collection. Please do not devalue the end result(s) you get from whichever camera you use. I also enjoy what it is about a scene you like or are reminded of. I think the way you see the world is probably the most rewarding part of your videos. Thank you.
To be honest, I liked the lighting in the GoPro video more than the results of the Fuji camera shots. The Fuji shots look blown out in the highlights and kind of washed out. There was much more dynamic range in the GoPro video at the time you took the shots. Do you find this as well? Did you choose to pseudo wash out the images, or are these RAW images you're showing?

For a Fuji camera, the xpro3 is Pro line (and I’m sure for other brands and models too): Titanium built, weather sealed, dual card slot, metal top dials (not plastic like the x-t5), mechanical shutter speed up to 1/8000 (a dream for Leica 😅)… and up to 32000 for electronic shutter. Specs wise, it looks pretty Pro to me when looking to the options on this rangefinder league.
Very enjoyable James nice camera. Nice to see the rest of the country gets rain also.
I'm still enjoying my xt-3 years later. I think Fuji make cameras fun to use, and fun to experiment with too. Their autofocus (or other features) probably isn't reliable enough for professional use, but I'm only a hobbyist photographer.
there is just something about fujifilm :) I have an x-t2 as my first camera, and i will never settle for any other brand. Neither am i professional, just hobbyist.

James. Really like your work and always entertaining. Am I missing something? As you point the video around I'm seeing great saturated colours and images. The moon looks great and the clouds nice and fluffy. Then you take the shot and they look washed out and like old 35mm film. Was that the aim, looking retro? Sorry, I hate being negative but I think it might be I missed something. Was it to show straight from camera images with no editing? Still enjoyed the video. Brighton used to be our go to place after parties when I was a Teen.
I do own an XPro3, I hope I don't have the LCD ribbon failure problem that some people report. It will be interesting to see if there is an XPro4, and how they address this ribbon failure problem....and of course if they will take care of XPro3 owners...so far people seem to have to pay for the repair.
Got an Xpro-3 recently and it’s my favorite camera of all time. Especially after customizing the film look myself. It’s got that IT factor that digital is generally missing from film
Lovely light in Brighton that morning, but a lot of your photos from the X-Pro3 look overexposed and flat to me. The sky has just completely gone in most of them. You've got a superb glow from the sunrise but it's completely lost in the final image. Were they straight out of camera JPEGs or have they been edited?

Free advice: why not use fully articulate back screen but the hinge at the bottom ie the side?

Reading the comments I didn't realize how many XPro shooters there are! I've used the XPro 2 & 3 professionally for over five years now for commercial/fashion/product. I love that the same camera I use for work is the same camera I use to photograph my kid and family. No doubt the Sony/Nikkon/Canon are wonderful, but for me, if the job calls for a bit more, I just rent the GFX and bill the client for the rental. Otherwise, I've not once had a client care it's crop. I have paired it with a full Broncolor system so the lighting makes the fuji xpro3 sing. Once you've dialed in your look in the profiles and save them (I have one for color and one for BW) 100% of my personal shots are JPG with my look applied and 100% of my commercial work is on a color checker and RAWs. Literally the best of both worlds. Cheers mate and enjoy the best quirky camera out there!
Just like you, I have gone through the M4/3 to FF path and ended up all in with Fuji. You will be there soon too. Maybe will end up replacing your FF with APS C first and ultimately go to their medium format cameras

Fuji’s X-E4, X100V and X-Pro3 are such a wonderful cameras! X-E4 is pretty much just exchangeable lense version of X100V (but you do lose some features like leaf shutter and weather sealing). X-Pro3 in the other hand has best things from both cameras!
The X100V is so rare, you'd think it's made out of Gold. I was really thinking about an X-E4 for street photography.
For some reason it's rare and overpriced now, but it was not in May 2021 ... well ... it was overpriced, but 15 or 20% cheaper than today.
I basically bought it knowing that Panasonic GF1 with 20mm/f1.7 lens was my most used camera. Now X100V complements my Panasonic G80. I sort of knew that when I'll buy interchangeable lens camera, it will be more expensive in long run and I would likely end with whole new system that mostly stays at home. Panasonic is by far more versatile having zoom, image stabilization, it focuses faster, it can record 4k video without overheating in two minutes if I want to, it has more consistent and better white balance (yes, sadly fuji can make foto in rainy forest look blueish, despite everything is brown or green), but I use it like few times a year, because Fuji is more fun to use, sometimes better, almost always good enough and I have it nearly always with me. Having 35mm or 40mm equivalent is perfect for social events, indoor use, city walks, photos of some details cause it focuses from maybe 3cm ...
Of coarse, if I want wide angle, telephoto, portrait lens, versatile travel camera, i take one with interchangeable lens.
@@pavelperina7629 It's super annoying. I have an X100F in my wedding kit, and over time the hybrid OVF has become a bit unreliable, occasionally getting stuck halfway(I think sand got in it on one of our beach excursions). Wanted to replace it with an X100V, but not at the absurdly inflated prices they're currently at.

I plan on buyong xpro4 later to pair with my z7-2 also next year. Compact Camera with ofv like rangefinder very critical for my kind of photo: street photo arts and culinary
The word you're looking for is optical viewfinder with frame lines, it has no actual rangefinder mechanism unfortunately.
