Recently got a Canon 5D Mk II after shooting film and mirrorless for a couple of years and I love having an OVF again in my digital camera (I have a split prism screen installed). It just changes the experience of framing a picture. Using old Nikkor non-AI glass on the Canon takes away the crispness of digital photos. Which I really enjoy from a creative perspective. I love using my Nikkor 28mm F2 non-ai lens and just use zone focussing. I can shoot old school style without the costs of developing film. Although I can still chimp my photos, I found myself being limited with the continuous exposure preview of the photos I was taking. They were always perfectly exposed and I got bored with it.

Great perspective Kyle. I've owned X-pro3 for a while now but couldn’t get behind the film simulations or recipes which what I wanted this camera for. I finally settled on the recipes that I like and I almost always shoot both JPEG and RAW. I find myself just using the jpegs t post/share and print. I use it with a 7 artisans 35mm F 1.2 manual focus lens. It’s 100% Fire
I’ve never used MPB because from what I’ve seen they concentrate mostly on digital gear, while I’m trying to find used film gear. For this, and being in the EU, my first stop is Kamerastore in Finland.
I was literally looking at this as a purchase today, I have the Fuji X to Leica M mount adapter and some nice M glass, could be a sweet run and gun. Nice B cam for wedding work too. Thanks for the great work as always man. Big fan.
I think it's cool that there are different cameras for different people, and love that you are clicking with the X-Pro 3. I've never understood the appeal of the X-Pro series as the main reason I love rangefinders is...well, the rangefinder, and I'd rather have shutter speed and f/stop on that back screen than what simulation I have selected. Otherwise an OVF that isn't a rangefinder or TTL doesn't do much for me. I guess that's why I bit the bullet on getting an M system. Overpriced? Maybe...The only digital rangefinder when i was looking? Yes.
For sure. The X-Pro 3 is definitely a love or hate camera. That's what I've learned from people I've talked to. I understand where you're coming from. I'd love to try a digital Leica one day. Just don't shoot enough smaller sensor digital to justify the investment. Especially as I own zero Leica glass.
I've had my eye on the X-Pro 3 since it first came out, it _feels_ like it is the perfect camera for me, and since I got my Fujifilm X30 I'm totally in love with Fuji. One day I'll be able to get one :D Great video and review, thanks a lot for always pushing out amazing content!
totally agree with the "experience" side of photography. I have had a Canon 5Diii then 1DXii then currently have a XT3 which like your XT4 use it mainly for video now and some stills. However, I've gotten back to slower shooting and slower subjects and out of that sports fast pace mindset as I was in with the 1DXii. I was shooting different subjects then anyways... Since then I also have picked up a Canon EOS 1N film and an original 5D which actually broke but now replacing it with a 5Dii from MPB. And I really enjoy the techniques I have to use to track a subject, keep it in focus, focus and recompose manually adjusting things and even with the 1N film camera just trying new things and seeing what results I get.
I use the Fujifilm X-T4 for photo and film and love it 😁. Would be interesting to try a camera from the X-Pro line up to compare though. What’s it like for video?
You can get great Video. it has 4K options, but the the experience is not the greatest because of formfactor ( I think). You can have an external mic and use headphones. I typically set it and use it straight out of camera in a pinch. but for good video I use the X-T4
I had the X-pro 1 when it first came out (2012?). Great camera, but I subsequently switched back to film 100%. I’ve been tempted by the Leica Q2M, but the price is a big disincentive. I might take a look at the X-pro 3 tho. Can you program the EVF to display in b&w?
Yes. You need to do two things. Set "NATURAL LIVE VIEW" to OFF. This does: The effects of film simulation, white balance, and other settings can be previewed in the monitor. Second thing to do: Set a B/W film simulation in the camera. Done.
It would be cool if they made an SLR style camera with an optical viewfinder. Like putting an OVF on the XT4. I dislike shooting with a rangefinder, so that would be pretty sweet.
Had an X-Pro 3. Bought it to replace the Panda M6 I sold as my everyday carry. I love the idea of Fuji, but every time I own one, I wish it was an actual rangefinder experience. It’s cool that they fit the bill aesthetically, but using them (X100T, X100F, X-pro2 & X-Pro 3), left me wanting. Sold my X-Pro 3, bought a Zeiss Ikon ZM as my everyday carry and haven’t looked back.
First things first, I like your work! I love the film experience but for various reasons I stopped using film cameras some twenty years ago. After then i used only DSLRs now I can’t even think about rangefinders. Fuji has great sensors but I don’t like their pricing… you only pay more or less for the extras! As for the photos themselves, you can edit any photo to look identical with film from any camera. I am doing it for years on my DSLR, just with the addition of a vintage lens (I am using a Planar 1.4/50) and careful color editing plus grain. The physical aspect though is subjective, and I can agree with you about XPro 3. It has a nice classic feel. I want to share a tip also. An APSC camera maybe sound scary for medium format users but be aware that these crop cameras are very lens dependable, in my experience! A top quality prime can give a very similar to medium format look. I blind tested side by side photos from my apsc Canon with Zeiss (Planar and Otus) lenses and Medium format Fuji GFX 50s to few other people. Except from pixel level inspection, no one can tell the difference, not even me! The only real problem using digital vs film is the dynamic range towards the highlights… this is not replicable by CMOS sensors (and CCD are going extinct)…
Since I’m right eye dominant, I can hold on right side of face while viewing the whole scene in front of me to anticipate things potentially moving into frame, can’t do that with other Fuji cameras.
Hi Kyle, would you say this camera is also good for professional work as well as something for personal work? Or would something like the x-t4 be a better option?
Hi,,good video, i choosing buy a camera for street and some portraits,,, i am between fuji xpro3 or 2,,, x4 or panasonic gx9? wich you consider to have the best image quality and material buits? Thanks!
I feel like the flipping screen is just made for the waist level viewfinder experience. I could really use such a camera I just feel like they're still a bit too big and clunky for me to fully dive into digital cameras
Beautiful video exploring the idiosyncratic (my word) X-Pro 3. I use that word not to knock the camera at at, but to , celebrate it and Fuji’s commitment to provide and support cameras that are outside the mainstream yet provide a link to film cameras of the past. I’ve never used one myself, but I will look to play with one soon. Thks for video ! Hv Sub’d. (Again, beautiful images ! )
I really want this camera. I shoot GFX and want a carry-around but the x100 series just doesn’t do it for me. This and an adapted m-mount lens would be a dream!
Hi Kyle, great review! I bought myself a X Pro-3 in December last year. Like you I am a film photographer at heart but I think this is a great intersection between the two worlds. Super quality optics and a really nice user experience. I would like to suggest you try out some of the film recipes as well so even better simulations to choose from.
So I’ve been shooting a contax for years. But one roll of Kodak Portra costs 25 Euros now where I live and I just can’t keep taking pictures like that, especially when I have the added stress of running to special labs for same day development when I’m on a deadline. I bought the x-t20 a couple of years ago hoping to hold a foot in the digital door with analogue-ish controls but find myself bothered with the constant menu riding and distracting screen. The x-pro3 with the ovf and the closed display looks like an investment bound to happen for me.
Hi Kyle, how do you bring together digital and analogue world? Do you ever come back to the photos you took digitally with a film camera? Does it ever cross your mind that “that shot is awesome, man I should have taken it on film”. And also, you probably shoot way more often than me, but I can’t really work out a scheme when to bring digital and when film with me (apart from handheld night shooting). Thank you
Love the channel. You gave me lots of insight in the process of film shooting. However, I really find it hard to afford film shooting as an amateur photographer.... On the other hand, giving up on y film gear, feels daunting to say the least. I have Leica M2 50mm summicron. A Nikon FE2 with Nokton 58mm and the Pentax 6x7 with the 105 Takumar SMC. Thinking about selling the lot and just go for a good Fujifilm digital camera. Any thoughts on this to help me make my mind up? Thanks in advance!
Yeah, film definitely isn't cheap to work with. Unfortunately though, at least for me, digital will never give me the same experience. You could always just shoot B&W, develop at home, use cheaper film stocks, etc. But still not going to be as convenient as shooting digital.
Picked up the X-Pro2 earlier this year (from MPB as a matter of fact). Now I'm trying to decide which to keep, it or the X100V. I can't rationalize having both -- well, I could if I tried -- and am still weighing the flexibility of the X-Pro2 versus the compactness of the X100V. (I'm keeping the X-T4 regardless of what I decide on those two. 😊)
I'm hoping the X-Pro4 will have either the same sensor as the X-H2s or the new higher resolution sensor that's meant to be coming later this year/early next year & hopefully with the IBIS from either the X-T4 or X-S10 as well.
Kyle- i watched this video too many times to admit, i keep wondering if you find it hard to get these files to the larger print output size you like? It looks like you print large and Curious to know if you find a difficult to push those file for larger prints sizes especially when it comes to the easier nature of the 100s to make large prints
@@AngeloHinojosa I had the X100F then went for the X-Pro3 because I wanted to be able to switch lenses. I mostly use my 7Atrisans 35mm Manual lens, but I carry autofocus lenses incase I need to have faster operations (Sometimes). It's the camera you buy to enjoy shooting.
Great video and review. The flip down screen should be great when you want to get the camera low. Probably easier than a flip out and then turn 90 degrees. Good stuff. 👍👍
You nailed it: This camera is mainly about user experience, creativity and portability. An asset you haven’t mentioned is the use of vintage glass on the XP. Besides the enhanced analogue experience the sensor can deliver very nice images with old lenses. I‘ve got very good results with minolta rokkor lenses. Nice side effect: They are fairly cheap. I slightly disagree with the OVF experience. There is a lot of room for improvement (size & brightness). I miss the magnification of the XP2, definitely a downgrade. The EVF is very poor. The OVF should be THE differentiator and stand out but its still mediocre in this 3rd generation body. The flip screen is great in my eyes. Very useful for waist level shooting otherwise just not existing. Perfect.
The hidden screen is more protected than on other cameras which is also a nice advantage. But the main advantage in my opinion is for street photography. The tilt down screen lets you fire off shots at chest and even hip level, while looking like you’re just checking your settings. Particularly with the touch screen shutter release. This thing is a candid photography monster!
I am watching your Video a second time here and still can not decide whether to purchase an X-Pro 3 2nd hand now or not . Really -- if it were 400-500 bucks less than I would for sure go for it ! For me the OVF alone is a reason to get it ! I just feel not so comfortable with the EVF`s so far ( only experienced the Sony a7 IV and Nikon Z7 -- both okay -- Nikon better , but still it feels a bit artificial to me ). Anyway - it is a bit tough to make this jump -- I´m invested in Nikon system ( and wanted to make the jump from DSLR`s to mirrorless, but as I mentioned -- the EVF`s just let me stay at the place I am so far ). I will for sure stay with Nikon in the end , and the Fuji x-Pro 3 would always be a sideline , used with maybe 2 AF lenses and some added Leica M-mount lenses for manual shooting. Decisions...decisions ....
Optical viewfinders cannot be beaten, digital will always have lag, and good rangefinders are the pinnacle of them, as seeing the actual moment of the photos capture without blackout makes a level of confidence and speed you cannot get, even training hard on any other system
Funny you never take stills with the XT4? 🤔 I came from the X pro2, and after it broke I was going to buy X pro3. But after I saw the back screen there was no way. Since I do a lot of street photography, I need to make a lot of adjustments quickly and I need the screen available to do that. Plus I like to make sure that I got the shot as sometimes my camera settings slip or even had a film card stop working. I certainly understand people’s way of thinking on this, but for me I need to make quick adjustments so I got the XT4 instead. All I do is take stills, as I don’t do video. But I found I like this body even better than the pro2. Faster auto focus and built-in stabilization. I’ve also have The X100V, and I plan on keeping it. 🖖
An excellent camera but the price was too high. You cant price it higher then xt4 and offer less. Tbh i would still pick this over xt4 if they had just given ibis, any photigraphy focussed camera should have that for low light situations
I had the dura black version of this camera with the 18/35mm lenses. I used for like the first month but then it really just sat on the shelf for almost a year. I reached for my mamiya 645 or Canon A1 if I wanted a film look. For more serious Paied work I just got my sony a7riii. Sold it to keh for a pretty bad loss surprisingly since it was basically in like new condition. It's a good camera I just couldn't use it for some reason 😢
MPB sucks because you have to give them your camera gear for them to sell, however long it takes for it to sell. No, I want to still use my gear if it's up on ebay.
I really wanted to love the X Pro line but the main drawback for me is that they are too big (especially for APSC cameras without IBIS). I had the X Pro 2 and it felt like a brick. I wonder if that's just me since no one complains about it.
I bought gear from them but the customer service is just poor (USA). Trades in always get down graded to a price tht worst than a street sale. Trust KEH better experiences than MPB
It's 2023 and Fuji has killed the X-Pro3. It never sold particularly well, and that controversial flip screen got all the focus from what is a great camera. Then Tik Tok blew up with images of the X-100V, and now every retro camera (X-E4 included) is a hot product. So what did Fuji do? Well they discontinued all three, naturally. Now they are selling used for more than the MSRP. Some people think all but the X-100 series are dead, and I wouldn't put it passed Fuji to do something that counter-intuitive. Some (like me) think Fuji is using this obviously manufactured scarcity (ala Rolex) to raise the perceived value of the X-Pro and X-E line so that when new versions appear they can massively jack up the prices. Are Fuji really that (devious) clever?
I think people compare prices with the previous generation, rather than the second hand market. I don’t expect Fuji to jack up the price on the X-Pro 4, but I guess you never know!
I disagree with the title but it sure does draw attention. Any digital camera with the LCD screen off works the same. The Xpro3 has too many constraints to be used as a single camera. Any lens too wide or too tight doesn’t pair well with this. If you’re going to use this with only a 23mm, I’d say the X100V is a better option. Perhaps a M digital camera would better deserve this title. I watch your content thinking would you inevitably start using a Leica camera ? Doing so would not mean selling out.
Leica's are definitely appealing, but I don't really shoot enough 35mm to justify the investment in a body/glass. That's probably the main reason you haven't seen one on this channel. Would love to test one out at some point though, just out of curiosity.
Fujifilm have lost their way a little with the size and cost of their newer lenses, and for $2000+ the X-Pro3 really should be performing at least on par with similarly priced full frame mirror less cameras. May be if they can put a stacked APSC sensor in this and keep the price the same it’d be better value for what you get. Right now I feel that it’s way overpriced.

Yes, agree. Reading glasses are what have pushed me to using EVF. Sucks getting old. 😃😃

I love my xpro3, especially with the new voigtlander 23!
Glad you found some sims that worked for you!
Wow what a coincidence, I was just looking at a used example of this camera and really mulling it over. Might have to pull the trigger now!
I’ve never used MPB because from what I’ve seen they concentrate mostly on digital gear, while I’m trying to find used film gear. For this, and being in the EU, my first stop is Kamerastore in Finland.
Kamerastore is a great option for film gear. :)
I'm waiting for a new one to come out so I can maybe get this as an upgrade to my X-T20 Ive used for the past 2 years
I'd love to see what the next gen X-Pro offers. Fingers crossed!
I was literally looking at this as a purchase today, I have the Fuji X to Leica M mount adapter and some nice M glass, could be a sweet run and gun. Nice B cam for wedding work too. Thanks for the great work as always man. Big fan.
So that is the right video for you: ruclips.net/video/UH-rSo3DnbM/видео.html
Cheers, Seth.
One day I'll be able to get one :D
Great video and review, thanks a lot for always pushing out amazing content!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
my only gripe is the crop sensor, with dosen't play well with vintage lens.
This camera is awesome. thanks for this great review. 💪
You're welcome. Cheers.
totally agree with the "experience" side of photography.
@@rdog77 Thanks for your reply, good to know! 👍
X-T4 is the way to go for video, imo. The IBIS is a big one for me.
Great vid! love the pictures. Besides the acros simulation, is there any other you prefer and like?
Classic Chrome is my go to for colour. Classic Negative is nice as well, although a bit heavy at times.
Outside of the OVF being useless with lenses wider than 18mm, it's a great camera.
Yes!
Yes. You need to do two things. Set "NATURAL LIVE VIEW" to OFF. This does: The effects of film simulation, white balance, and other settings can be previewed in the monitor. Second thing to do: Set a B/W film simulation in the camera. Done.
Yep, as mentioned, it can display film sims, exposure, white balance, etc.
It would be cool if they made an SLR style camera with an optical viewfinder. Like putting an OVF on the XT4. I dislike shooting with a rangefinder, so that would be pretty sweet.
But this would require a mirror. Else it would just be a rangefinder style viewfinder moved over the lens…
@@fIysohigh correct, probably why they haven’t don’t it yet lol
Man ! love your blues ! by any chance do you sell your presets? its beautiful !
Thanks for the great review. Random question: What font are you using in this video?
Cheers, Ben. Can't remember off hand which font this is.
Thanks!
Great review! My dream camera 📷 one day ☺️
Cheers, Danny.
It's a fun one!
Love me some X-Pro 3!
Can you make a video on the color edition with Fuji files, i like your natural style and i would like to learn more!
I'll keep that in mind for a possible video for the future.
Cheers, Michael. I've eyeballed the recipes, just so many to choose from. Don't know where to start!
Thank you
Hey how do you feel about that 23mm lens? I have the same set up. Not sure if it’s worth upgrading to the 23 lm wr
I know this is probably not important to you, but can you please tell me which EVF is larger the X-T4 or X-Pro3?
Picked up the X-Pro2 earlier this year (from MPB as a matter of fact). Now I'm trying to decide which to keep, it or the X100V. I can't rationalize having both -- well, I could if I tried -- and am still weighing the flexibility of the X-Pro2 versus the compactness of the X100V. (I'm keeping the X-T4 regardless of what I decide on those two. 😊)
Tough call, for sure. Both great cameras!
Just got one and LOVE IT.
I really like the Xpro 3, although I haven’t used it. I’ve been debating for a while on either keeping the x100v or switching for a xpro3.
Both 🙂
@@RandyPollock haha, I’m already runnin a XT4 and X100V. Xpro and x100 are pretty similar already though which would be why I wouldn’t get both
@@AngeloHinojosa I had the X100F then went for the X-Pro3 because I wanted to be able to switch lenses. I mostly use my 7Atrisans 35mm Manual lens, but I carry autofocus lenses incase I need to have faster operations (Sometimes). It's the camera you buy to enjoy shooting.
Yeah, that's a tough one. They're both great cameras, but doesn't make sense to own both.
Great video and review. The flip down screen should be great when you want to get the camera low. Probably easier than a flip out and then turn 90 degrees. Good stuff. 👍👍
Cheers, Sean!
Perfect.
Cheers, Chris. I've never used the XP2, so can't comment on the OVF comparison. I found it to be fine for my work.
I love your video
I use canon r6 for my RUclips videos. It is fantastic camera. I love it))))💙🌛
Shoot...ready to buy an X-T30. Is the bigger body worth it?
Haven't used an X-T30, so can't comment. Definitely a different style with this camera.
love the camera but hate the flip screen design. Would rather have the X Pro 2
Funny you never take stills with the XT4? 🤔
I came from the X pro2, and after it broke I was going to buy X pro3.
I was a long time XPro2 shooter and have really been missing it lately. This video didn’t help. Might have to pick up and XPro3.
Such a fun cam!
I love the look of the Fuji systems and what they offer… but I’m Sony all the way for digital
chimping is so digital era..... I'm a fan of avoiding chimping... I love XPro3
First song?
'Calm Yourself Down - Justin Wade'
Now for a GFX 50RII with an OVF. >_>
Yes please!
Sadly the screen is very fragile. I shoot on a monopod. In that case you need it flipped down.
An excellent camera but the price was too high. You cant price it higher then xt4 and offer less. Tbh i would still pick this over xt4 if they had just given ibis, any photigraphy focussed camera should have that for low light situations
Just here to comment that I’m not watching this video - on your advice! 😂 Great to meet you at the weekend.
Good to meet you too, Gareth!
I wonder if that's just me since no one complains about it.
fuji gang
🙌
I bought gear from them but the customer service is just poor (USA). Trades in always get down graded to a price tht worst than a street sale. Trust KEH better experiences than MPB
X pro1 x ever
watching Fujifilm files being processed in lightroom ist Kind of painful.
literally just don't oversharpen
Fuji really is an amazing brand 🔥
But so is ilford
Fujifilm have lost their way a little with the size and cost of their newer lenses, and for $2000+ the X-Pro3 really should be performing at least on par with similarly priced full frame mirror less cameras.
May be if they can put a stacked APSC sensor in this and keep the price the same it’d be better value for what you get. Right now I feel that it’s way overpriced.
