👋 FWIW: I was the bus driver. I was a GI Bill student at IU. I graduated in ‘85, but kept the student bus driver gig because my wife was a grad student. Word on campus was that the IU Athletic department bought all of the calendars. I don’t remember Coach Knight’s comments at the bus door having the gentle tone that Coach Alford remembers, but it was a long time ago. I do remember that Coach Alford was the first player on the bus at Assembly Hall and the last one off at the Bloomington Airport. I caught up to him on the road back to Bloomington, walking in the road. I pulled the bus over to the left and stopped it far enough in front of him that the door wouldn’t catch him as I stopped. It was a short bus ride, but it would’ve been a long walk.
This reminds me of the time when Coach Moe, Coach Linder and us kids in D2 in the Middle of Winter we were in Denver, remind you we were playing Colorado State in an Exhibition game. We were going through Denver cause Coach Moes Dad was in the Denver Nuggets Front office, well the Bus Broke down a couple of us had to walk 3 miles to get gas for the Bus, lol. Me being one of them. Lol. Oh things like this brings back alot of memories.
Richard, GREAT story to share here, WOW, that was a special moment picking up Steve Alford walking home after Bobby Knight sends his ass home walking. Had to be a sinking feeling, but I'm sure he learned a lesson but seriously, he posed in uniform for a calendar, how stupid. It was too raise $$$. I could see if he was wearing a jock strap ONLY or a young 14 year old girl was in the pic with him?
my favorite bobby knight story. he goes to isiah thomas's parents apartment to recruit isiah. isiah's brother says 'what if the KKK comes after my brother, since they started near bloomington". bobby knight made a joke of it, cuz it was an odd question. he says 'depends if we are losing or not". Isiah's brother stands up...goes chest to chest with bobby....bobby takes his coat off and says 'lets settle this outside" ha ha. Isiah looks at his mom and his mom loved it ! She was looking at Bobby Knight in admiration. Isiah said ''right then, i knew i was going to Indiana U to play ball"
I love players telling Coach Knight stories and the love for him that comes through. I had the privilege of playing for Wayne Graham 1990-91 and the stories are always similar. I always knew he was tough on me because he believed in me. I sure do miss being yelled at by him. I missed a bus for a road trip and I was one of the starting pitchers that day for a double header. The next day at practice I walked through the gate scared to death and he just looked at me and pointed to the outfield. I dropped my stuff and proceeded to run around the field for the entire 3hr practice. I haven’t missed a bus since. 😂
a pilot i knew who had the airplane he flew based at the bloomington airport. he flew in one night after the team landed and apparently had lost quite badly on the road. he got the airplane put to bed and started home only to find Bobby Knight walking along the side of the road. he stopped and asked Coach why he was walking back to bloomington. he was told that, 'he did not want to be seen riding into town with those individuals'. Coach apparently used a much different choice of words to describe the team but this gives one an idea of the conversation that was had. if that road could talk....
Prepare for LIFE through the Education of Basketball..Prepare to be your best is the education I got from Coach. Just ask Micheal..Be like Mike..I LOVE you both...Prepare yourself to achieve your best at anything..
Knight was off scale when it came to coaching X’s n O’s HOWEVER integrity is not a word to use when talking about him. I would NEVER have a relative of mine play for him. He was a bully. Very undisciplined. Not a good guy.
I think Bobby knight was a full time Narcissist He was raised a Christian but that doesn’t make you a Christian The guy was off the rails always in rage mode ! You lead by example only Rage mode is no example
Spoken like someone with absolutely no fucking clue the amazing man Coach Knight was. He did so much for charity and he demanded it was done in private.
Never liked knight now you goin have all these great phony comments up here how great of giy he was disagree sorry that he passed but to me he was obnoxious rude of a person

You knew what you had to do that Knight lol. Great that you can tell it all these years later.

Knight went after Alford when he was the Coach at UCLA (or wherever in LA). Compare Knight’s behavior to Saban’s.
Who won the game?

Got to love Steve Alford
We need more bus drivers like the one that night
R.I.P. Coach Knight. Legend!
Wow, accountability… who knew? Love it!

Bobby Knight was such a sweetheart 😂😂😂
Old school coach. Holding players accountable. No pampering from Knight.
Rest in peace coach knight best ever
Lol..WTF? He bullied and abused his players..WTF is WRONG with you?
Great story Steve. Bob will forever be loved at IU. ❤
That’s funny :)
Coach love
Has a nice ring to it ;)
Steve’s hair is still perfect .
That sounds like what Bobby would do. 😊

Coach Knight……Making men out of boys!!🙏🏻🙏🏻😔😔
Class breeds class
Good thing Bird left......❤
I never heard that story...Wow. What year was that? Steve would have made a Grand and an NIL deal today. Sigh.
Baby faced assassin and tough as shoe leather ....probably any other coach would've tried get susp overturned but knight had integrity
Alford has the same speech cadence as Patrick Knight
🏀😁🥶
"Respecting the game"? Really?
Socks..shorts...1.2.3
90%...1..2..3
Swish.
😆😂😝🤣

Well he would also move mountains for his former players like Landon turner
Complicated I guess means abuser.
Bobby Knight is no John Wooden. I look to John Wooden for his ability to coach and not be an ahole to his players from time to time.
Wooden had a real assssshole assistant. Did the dirty work.
I think Bobby knight was a full time Narcissist
He was raised a Christian but that doesn’t make you a Christian
The guy was off the rails always in rage mode !
You lead by example only
Rage mode is no example
Stop
Cry more.
Horribly abusive person. That’s his legacy
Very successful coach. Terrible human being.
Terrible how? He graduated all his players on time and NEVER cheated the game, money under the table.
@@nymike06 I think he is talking about how he treated players at times!
Spoken like someone with absolutely no fucking clue the amazing man Coach Knight was. He did so much for charity and he demanded it was done in private.
@@Minotaur92 Exactly!!!
@@Minotaur92 yes he did but I think people are talking about how he treated his players
He was a horrible person. I’m sure there are lots of people who will say he was a total POS person.
No, he wasn’t.
