  • In this video I review the spitfire 1180 and give my thoughts on its performance vs. the PNG 1150.
    My overall conclusion is that the Spitfire 1180 is the most fun wing I own and beats the 1150 in all categories except for ease of dead starting/jump starting. The 1150's low lift helps a lot for that! For more experienced riders, the 1180 unlocks speed and carving that the 1150 just doesn't provide. If I could only have one wing, it would be the 1180, but only after learning to dockstart with the 1150.

    I think it's easier to dead start by jump down from the dock. Jump up is much harder. I know I'm not an expert to tell you how but I had about over 2500 attempts dead start. I'm still learning how to pump.😉

      @oneamateur I fully agree! Jumping down conserves more energy as well, which makes the start less tiring.

    Very curious to see how the 460V2 pumps with the 1180 SF compared to the skinny.

      I need to try that as well. After some of the testing I did this past weekend I imagine it will slow the cadence down, have more stability and more drag.

    Did you use for both frontwings the advanced fuselage?
    It is recommended to start with the standard fuse & png 1150.
    Maybe with the red advanced fuse & the skinny rear the 1150 developes in the direction of the 1180 🤷‍♂️🤙

      Only the black fuse was advanced for this test, the red fuse is the standard 68cm setup. I am going to test the 1150 with skinny rear this weekend for my next video, but you are right, I would to see how it behaves with a red advanced fuse!

    Great insight, thanks for that video. It’s probably because you’re used to riding a more demanding and high performance foil that the 1150 feels so easy to you now 😉

      I think you're right! The 1180 forced me to improve my technique quite a bit. The 1150 and 1401 allow for bigger error margins in my experience.

    Thanks for the review, can you post your actual speeds from the watch data for each foil? You sure did look slow on that 1150 compared to the 1180. I find my 1180 needs about 7 knots to fly with my weight, but I've never ridden a red fuse wing before.

    • @FoilFanatic42
      @FoilFanatic42  6 месяцев назад +1

      Absolutely! I forgot to record the part where I talk about the 1150 speeds, but here are the results: 1180 max speed was 12.4 mph, 1150 max speed was 10.2 mph. I feel like the 1180/50 has a really good low pump speed and high pump speed, but feels far more efficient when pumping fast vs the 1150/460 combo. The plan is to get more data this weekend for my next video.

    On the question you threw out over pumping in waves, try to rise up in the peak of the wave and it's energy will add to yours. I wing but there's pumping in the lulls and I always have waves.

    • @FoilFanatic42
      @FoilFanatic42  5 месяцев назад

      What about when you go down the wave? Should I pump through it or ride it down and then pump? I feel like I'm super inefficient here. Thanks!

    • @fluiditynz
      @fluiditynz 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@FoilFanatic42 It depends so much on the wave frequency. If you have time to pump down a wave then maybe you should be riding it higher to catch i's surf energy. The hardest waves are the ones with interference patterns, waves reflecting from the dock, from shore. I suggest you push your comfort zone, try and get out when there's wind and waves, you will find new opportunities.

    • @FoilFanatic42
      @FoilFanatic42  5 месяцев назад +1

      @fluiditynz Most of what I deal with is waves from all directions and off the cliff next to the dock, but I agree that going out in those conditions should help my familiarity. Going to be a fun summer!

    dead start but with the knee on the board so you can fiercely push off the dock with the rear leg! that is easier when you are low on the water.
    If you pair the png with the skinny, you will be able to gain mast height easier and thus add glide phases between the pumps!

    • @FoilFanatic42
      @FoilFanatic42  6 месяцев назад +1

      I tried my first dead starts with my knee, but I definitely didn't do it right as you may have seen in my other videos haha. I may need to give it another shot! I'll be testing the Skinny with the 1150 this weekend, so I'm excited to see how it feels.

      @@FoilFanatic42 it's incredible how the skinny can revive also the 'draggier' pngs!
      I moved to the art pro 1401 and first paired with the /50 skinny, now the /40: one focus on the front foil and regains height much effortlessy, glides improves a lot!
      Also try with shimming it negatively -0.5
