This is catchy, but even back then as a 9 year old I knew this was instantly dated and didn’t fit the tone of the story or the movie. The 70s, 80s and 90s had a hard time being timeless. Even with a great TV show like The Wonder Years, the show is set in the late 60s and early 70s, but at least once every episode, it’s like Doc Brown showed up in his DeLorean and took everyone to 1985. It was part of the show’s charm. Sometimes it works, but sometimes, like here, it’s like a square peg in a round hole. Fortunately the rest of the movies and performances are good enough to carry it. The problem is that too many movies are made as instant cash grabs, capitalizing on whatever is popular at the time. Unfortunately, that just means watching it with your kids isn’t going to be much fun - for them, anyway.
Capturing an era thing is not easy at all and usually less is more. I think of Freaks & Geeks or Donnie Darko in this realm of trying to capture a retro thing without being like Stranger Things say… these films are high concept imo and it’s amazing to have a rap song even by todays standards for a theme, who cares if it works it was tried and a video is amazing and fun I am not looking to the tv show past or modern era 2022 for approval
