    Stumbled upon this, I find it very nostalgic. I'm from Chicago and in the mid-late 90s and early 2000s this sound was very popular among the bands who played at the Fireside Bowl and the Metro. Cap n Jazz, American Football and all the Kinsella bands were among my favorites. About 10 years ago I used to drink at a bar called Rainbow near Damen and Division. John Haggerty from Naked Raygun and Tim Kinsella from Cap N Jazz were bartenders there. I always thought it was really cool to have drinks served by 2 musicians that made music I love and legends in my eyes.
    Great videos, I look forward to watching more of them!

      change tuning (I personally recommend E G# B F# A# D#), do some random tapping with open chords till you find some sounds you like and finally check if there's some odd time signatures that adequate to what you played :T

    • @LetsTalkAboutMathRock
      @LetsTalkAboutMathRock  7 лет назад +20

      Nice, thanks for the advice. That open tuning would give you a chord centre around a Emaj9#11 or a Bmaj13/E, which ever way you look at it. Nice a bright sounding. If you throw a capo on, it'll change the chord centre. Have a mess around but note you are likely to get stuck with the open chord being the chord centre, making it all sound rather similar in tonality. To combat this try some other tunings, much like Tim does throughout TTNG records.

      you dont have to change your tuning at all, i suggest learning some of your favorite songs by ear. once you have a couple of them down youll realize your playing adapts to your new style. pretty intuitive huh

    Have you checked out josh martin from little tybee and his lessons? Although it's not your style and it's more folky, his guitar work is amazing, especially since it's so technical but fits in so well with the band he's in. Think you'd be really into some of the techniques as well.

    i learned how to play 40 rods a few months ago and its pretty tough, its really fun to play once u get all of it down. when i first listened to the song i was amazed, i had it on repeat all the time. but i especially liked the riff at 1:25-1:55 (time stamps for the riff in the song) so i learned it by ear so i could loop it on my looper pedal and create some cool layering parts. i eventually went on to find tabs for the rest of the song and now i can play it :) thats ma story

    • @LetsTalkAboutMathRock
      @LetsTalkAboutMathRock  7 лет назад +1

      Very nice. Thanks for sharing. It did take me a while to get it to full speed. I'm not at all adept with effect pedals, but knowing how to use them would really help with songs such as this. Time to start learning to use them more effectively, haha.

    Is it just me or is 26 is dancier than 4 a little too unclean? Not sure if it's too much gain, reverb, a bad mic, or bad yt compression but it sounds a little too gritty, like you gave the tab to Nirvana to play or something

    • @LetsTalkAboutMathRock
      @LetsTalkAboutMathRock  6 лет назад

      +Benjamin Denim hello. Good question. I've had a discussion about this before with a few friends. For a beginner I'd say it's better to get the basics of playing down first and then start to think about playing in more of a mathier style. On my page I have quite a few lessons. The first lesson I did on chords may be useful. Check it out, you can get a good feel for if ylu think you're ready or not. All the best and good luck!

    Wow...now I isolated the reason this genre doesn't appeal to me. The riffs don't say anything really, there were a couple melodic phrases, with counter harmonies that worked. But nothing memorable. If this is the famous stuff, it's going to always appeal to a small contingent of rock fans.

    For me only american footbal sounded like concious attempt at creating actual melody not just technical wankering
