- Tom Waits: Tales from a Cracked Jukebox (BBC Documentary)
Directed by James Maycock
Tom Waits is one of the most original musicians of the last five decades. Renowned for his gravelly voice and dazzling mix of musical styles, he's also one of modern music's most enigmatic and influential artists. Using rare archive, audio recordings and interviews, this film is a bewitching after-hours trip through the surreal, moonlit world of Waits' music - a portrait of a pioneering musician and his unique, alternative American songbook.

No one ever mentions his role in the film "Ironweed." It's small, but he absolutely steals the show in it and makes the hobo life seem so surreal, demented, and free of pretense.
Pure genius! And SO much fun!
What a treasure this. Thank you Bob, thank you for everything.
Whatever Waits creates artistically is great & bent. I love his music.
He is a f g genius.
I was exactly like that…loved his early, romantic ballads. Then he scared the crap outta me. Had to stand back and catch my nerve and go back in. Now I’m just as big a fan of the shocking stuff. He woke me up a little.
I’ve seen him live at least eight times in every iteration and just was awed by his absolute artistry. In the beginning I would try and get my friends to listen and most didn’t get it. They eventually came around, of course. In my opinion Tom is the most fantastic sound artist and wordsmiths ever. This documentary is excellent!!
I don’t wanna grow up.
Leon Redbone and Tom Waits are two of my favorites so unique, interesting..Love Toms stories Small Change got wasted with his own 38 was one of my favs
I turned my young son on to him in high school.."Mom what are you listing to" he's a fan now
« …Well I was born at a very young age »
Damn I love Tom.
There's a Tom Waits song for every feeling I've ever experienced in my life. It has helped me through life and death. The range of his repertoire is simply all there is.
Closing Time and Rain Dogs do it for me.
My most interesting Tom Waits story goes like this...
I was 28, living in Minneapolis- because of my love of The Replacements, and of course, the girl. By 28, the girl was gone, but 2001 was a great time to see your favorite bands play all around Minneapolis. Anyway, my friend (who incidentally introduced me to Tom Waits' music in high school) invited me out to his new place in Manhattan- Spanish Harlem. I had recently bought an iron-on off eBay with a beautiful psychedelic image of Tom Waits that said: Tom Waits is My President. As I attempted to go through security (shortly after 9/11), I was pulled aside, and asked, " Who is this Tom Waits that is YOUR President?
I replied, " A musical genius".
He said, " Never heard of him."
I said, " I wouldn't think You would have".
And I was sent on my way to see my first Brooklyn girls on downtown trains. After the jolt of NYC during that visit, I moved here the following year. Every time I'm on a downtown train I think of Tom.
❤️
He so brilliant, and a true original ❤
This is awesome!
"I Don't Wanna Grow Up" sums it all up for me. One of the most brilliant and versatile artists of all time.
My two favorite TW albums --- Swordfishtrombones and Blue Valentine
Very cool to hear Lucinda Williams on Waits; songwriter heavyweights!
Well , i , say its simply beat poetry and jazz . I love Tom for that confluence .
His first 3 albums are pure genius... After that are more genius evolving into mad, genius scientist .
Blood money is my favorite Tom waits album
It would have been an empty life without Tom...
Watching now, looking forward to seeing this. A friend of mine used to call his music, "Crazy clown music." Which it is--and I love it! Some people might use that as a put down but I love it!
Amazing. Tom Waits is a man its very difficult to understand and explain from the outside looking into his world, but this documentary did a pretty good job capturing the man and his music. Good work, BBC
Thanks for the upload.
You're very welcome! 🎶
I’m not a fan of Tom’s music. Just never really liked it but…I GET IT! I respect him and recognize how talented and brilliant he is. I know it’s weird but it’s how I feel.
Song live the Royal oak music theater 1978 I'll never forget to change my life
The first time I heard of Tom Waits, MTV played God's Away on Business.
Afterwards me and my brother were like "What the hell was that!?"
"I think we were just attacked!"
Fans ever since
Love this comment! 🎶
Yes indeed, you were bitch slapped by yo mama! I’m certain I was! Yeah baby! It’s all fun it’s my life motto!
he was in sly stallone movie "paradise alley"
Bravo!
I need to witness him performing live, does he ever perform live anymore?
I haven’t seen or heard anything about live performances in a while. Definitely hope that will change. 🎶
Pick a bad habit, and practice it. Don't just dabble in it,.....get serious, and dig deep. Smoke too much, drink too much, drunk too much, drug too much, sleep too much, fuck too much ......Too much,..too much.
I'm working on it...
@@scotthartman8604 Me too,....I didn't drink hard liquor or smoked tobacco until I was 30. I got pretty good at those things, as the years went on. I smoked weed for 50 years. I stopped drinking at age 63. Prescription medication, made me stop. At 70,....I still smoke cigarettes, &. weed. "Practice makes perfect"......lol
Read the writings of Charles Bukowski. The Hard bitten, dead ender, chronic drunk, Beat poet, who embodied the Wait's life style & persona. See the movie Barfly. Bukowski writes: "Find what you love, and let it kill you",.....I paraphrase.
There's also Factotum with Matt Dillon.
If you wanna know too much about bukowski the man, there's a good doc.
@@justinrowland5191 Thanks! I may have seen it. I saw one 10 to 20 years ago,....it was very thorough. Almost to the point of exhausting.
Buk wasn’t a “Beat poet”, he did his own thing… Kerouac even resented being dubbed “King of the Beats”.
@@SNAFU78I know you are correct,....I kinda half knew my calling Bukowski a "beat poet" wasn't technically right.
I surprised they didn't mention Howlin Wolf as an influence on Tom.
Omg, you’re completely right. Not only the voice but the singing style. Please people check it out!
In the States, for every white singer or musician, there is always a black singer or musician that you can reference to.
I always wondered how he doesn't get nodules from straining his voice artificially like that.
Why no mention of the collaborations with Robert Wilson...Alice, Blood Money....?
How do you write a song about throwing drunks down stairs when working the door , piano bar
Only once in an Age............
The picture is cut off at the bottom and can’t read subtitles of the movie! Why is this?
I’m not really sure what you mean. If you turn on the closed captions you should be able to read the subtitles fine. Hope this helps! 🙂
@@tonestunes75 The original picture is cut short at top and bottom , plain and simple. I’m not a fan of subtitles but this in the picture as an afterthought or point of view. You know what I mean if you watched the movie. Thanks for your suggestion that will help I think, but you can’t tell me that you didn’t know that the picture is cut off at the top and bottom? Thanks again don’t mean to be harsh dude.
Don lane was a notorious fiddler

you ain't fuulin' me, yu be showing vid of Mr. T. Wattes of Calidonia, aber das audio ist von Spruce Blingsteen auf Nu Joyzee .. I kno dope ... und I no harpoon it either ....
The Character of Kramer on Seinfeld was based on Tom Waits. So was the character that I am based off of.
In Based off of Kramer
Quit spreading misinformation. Kramer was based exclusively on a former neighbor of Larry David.
My Dad used to steal other kid's newspapers to sell. He had a crazy childhood.
He's good ,though he is no Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet).
Both of them are one of a kind originals!
Two different universes, love 'em both.
He’s good, though he is no Liberace.
@WolfCampbell It’s not a competition
