Akane was supposed to be the mastermind at some point, not the rival character. That´s why the physical similarities in body type to Junko and her last name being Owari.

Someone just saw that old promotional art with Akane looking kinda angry/evil and said that it was the rival character at some point and that rumor spread like fire. The page that had this image was actually just talking about the first 4 revealed characters: Hajime, Chiaki, Akane, and "Togami" (the ultimate imposter). The article also mentioned gameplay elements (including the rebuttal showdown, hence why it includes an early version of the rebuttal showdown animation), and a joke about the similarities of some of these new characters with the previous ones: the two Byakuyas, Akane and Asahina. And as everyone already knows "Togami" dies first and Chiaki is the main girl of the game (hence why it´s specifically Hajime and Akane the ones portrayed in the rebuttal. Because they do had rebuttal animations for the game. Togami and Chiaki weren´t meant to have rebuttal animations againts Hajime. "Togami" because he dies without participating in a class trial and Chiaki because she was supposed to support Hajime during the class trials and literally never had a rebuttal againts him because of it). Okay theory/headcanon: The two gas masks twins? Those were important characters that we would occasionally see in cutscenes that would be a part of the Future Foundation, which would add on to the lie that the Future Foundation were the evil ones that we were made to believe at the beginning of the game. Which might explain Ibuki’s bêta gas mask: she was supposed to be the traitor. ^^

Spoilers kind of: I think the gasmaks is suposed to be the characters as ultimate despair, since most didn't know that class 77 was ultimate despair, they probaly hid their faces alongside other things to hide their identities. I have concept for this character. Maybe they will revive the one who die, but monokuma decide to kill her because of it. Maybe shls zombie could revive people, but their memories are changed a bit. Or shls zombie could be the mastermind

I feel like the unused gas mask characters might’ve originally been future foundation members or something, since the tragedy polluted all the air. Plus they look like colleagues to me rather than siblings.
I think twin characters would be very interesting for Danganronpa. Especially in a situation where one of them becomes a killer and the characters accuse the wrong twin. So the other twin has to fight to not be wrongly chosen while also getting messed up because they'll have to execute their twin.
The second game takes place in a simulation meant to be an escape from reality -> The killing game causes it to become closer and closer to what actually happened (like with Fuyuhiko's eye, or the chapter 2 motive) -> In the first game the air was apparently polluted in the outside world -> People maybe would have worn gas masks to try to escape from that -> Characters wearing gas masks in the NWP would have been a reference to this (and another thing that clashed with the island atmosphere)
31:40 i have a self insert Danganronpa character and shes kinda plus sized, she also has three outfits, the first outfit is similar to Shirogane, the second is similar to Saionji's (i actually changed my self inserts last name to Saionji because theyre twins that look and act nothing like eachother), and the last outfit is hard to explain, its kinda like Celestes skirt, plain black with ruffles on the bottom, attached to the bottom of the skirt are upside down crosses, the skirt is a corset skirt (like Shiroganes) tgat goes under her chest, the top is black (has a cutout like one of Kirumis beta designs) with slightly puffy sleeves (like Sonias), shes wearing black leg and arm warmers with platform heels. I'm actually drawing the designs
The twins design made me realize how cool it could be as a concept. like imagine not knowing which twin the blackened was or Twin A killing Twin B and pretending to be them in the trial
Chiakis beta designs makes me believe even more that she was intended to be fully an ai and the dr3 writers came up with the idea that she was a real person last minute. The fact that her first name is a mash-up of chihiros name, her having the same birthday as him, and the fact that her beta designs looked exactly like him points to alter ego/chihiro creating her ai will little outside inspiration (I also just didnt like the fact that chiaki was a real person in dr3 but thats a whole other can of worms)
I completely agree, it's pretty clear that Chiaki was supposed to just be an ai based on chihiro/alter ego but then they decided to change it in the making of DR3 because of how popular her character is and they had make up some bs reason for how that was possible
It’s very clear from the concepts that they were REALLY trying to make buff fuyuhiko work but none were quite right. Sometimes a character just doesn’t work the way you wanted them too and you have to step back and take a new approach. But hey that what concept art is for, your making a CONCEPT, an idea, getting a feel for what you want.
I'd love a rumor video! No matter how false they turned out to be. Visiting rumors always strike me as some sort of nostalgic, it's like a way to revisit the parts of the Fandom when all we could do was speculate and imagine what the games would be like if said speculation was true. For instance there was a rumor that the area you played in in V3 was a legitimate prison and all the participants were known criminals. It drastically changed how I thought the narrative would go, like one about punishment vs rehabilitation. I love the game we got, but some of these speculated plots are too cool to let disappear into the internet.
Seeing Nekomaru with all these smaller designs makes his backstory make more sense. He isn’t able to play sports himself because a heart condition holds him back. That always seemed strange with his final design. I think what they might have been going for with the Sparkle Justice face was giving someone that face, then mentioning they look like Sparkle Justice, someone uses a Sparkle Justice Mask during a kill, and that frames the person with the similar face. Or if that was Peko’s original face, maybe she was gonna be more comedic, only to actually be a crazy badass. Makes me wonder if that persona she put on while wearing the mask was a in-joke to her original personality. Something else that ties Akane to Junko - both grew up in poverty. I could see Mahiru being the original protagonist. She was always oddly plain compared to the rest of the cast, and that’s usually a protagonist trait.
I saw the gas mask characters and I immediately thought of Jataro from UDG. Maybe the creators originally wanted an ultimate artist with a tragic back-story similar to Jataro's but later it got scrapped and the character was reused for Jataro instead. Also the female design in particular with her light hair and dark skin reminds me of Angie from V3 and she was the ultimate artist so maybe those beta designs were repurposed in the end after all. But im just speculating, I highly doubt what I said is what really transpired. But those gas mask designs were really cool and I'd have loved to see a character like that be a part of the game.
I actually kinda wish Ibuki was that cartoon version, lowkey fits her perfectly 🤣 I actually quite like that they have goofy characters, wish it wasnt mostly fat characters, but if it was Ibuki instead, that'd be epic

Honestly, I don't know why but I actually like the Mobster's Astro-Boy and Justice Ibuki (Not as much as Gas Mask Ibuki of course). Think they are cool designs, although it looks like it's a mask instead of an actual face.
The gas mask Ibuki is probably a reference to cybergoth and rivethead subcultures which stem from industrial and post-punk music. If I'm not mistaken, the cybergoth community in Japan is pretty sizeable.

Honestly, I thought that Nagito's first design was... kinda hot, actually! Also, my reaction to Monomi's first design: Ever since Monotaro forgot that he was a bear, he is now a rabbit!
Ok but imagine this. The generic teruteru design makes him this plain soft boy who’s easy to like and forgettable in crowd, and uses that to show just how awful people like that can be with having him be more emotionally manipulative to create someone seemingly nice, but really just sleezy. A face in the crowd, yet someone who can garner sympathy and tug at your heartstrings with a well practiced sob story. Granted if they did lean into this character it would be much harder to genuinely sympathize with him when all the cards are laid out but I think it would be an interesting angle for a perverted character with such a trustworthy talent.
In alternate universe everyone have Astro Boy Fuyuhiko, Sparkling Justice Chucky doll Peko (the two become best ship), cursed baby face Ibuki, handsome Teruteru and big brain Mechamaru
I thought fuyuhiko was supposed to die in peko’s and execution and hiyoko was supposed to have a survivor arc but then they changed it last last minute and had hiyoko die in the 3rd chapter to have a double murder again. Which is also why there’s no murder weapon for hiyoko.
I love most of the Beta design they were actually better than some of the actual original outfits and I would of love to see mask ibuki and Soda with Glasses, also I'm glad they never chose any other design for Nekomaru he's original design is pretty great I simp hahah XD

I just think Kodaka was just really inspired by Uchikoshi's tradition of having a masked character in the Nonary Games. My guess is that the art team was against it to have more expressive characters. Also someone on the art team really loved the Peko mascot and sweets with the teruteru designs, look it up.
The only possible explanation I can think of about why Teruteru did that to Hiyoko in the "Beta Hiyoko Death" rumor is something causing him to regain his memories and revert back to his Ultimate Despair personality.
I fell like if siblings were actually playing in the killing game would be so much interesting because of the dynamic would go. I had like one idea of one of the siblings were about the get killed by another classmate but their brother or sister saves them by killing the person so now they are the blacken. So the sibling that get saved tries their best to get them on them so they could save their sibling, but as always they blacken is found and it would be a very sad execution.
What if "Zombie Girl" is supposed to be an assistant to the evil mascots, Monomi and Monokuma, and the brain she is holding would be "Junko's" brain? Or something along the lines of "Zombie Girl" being the vessel of AI Junko in the game?
idk why but most of the "older female" design remind me of Hiroko Hagakure from UDG mostly due to the long hair, calm/adult expression and the beauty mark. i also feel like the gas mask designs were probably inspired by Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors.
Fun fact: Chiaki’s name is a combination between the first 3 letters of Chihiro and the last 3 letters of Fujisaki. It also links with the fact that Chiaki was an AI and Chihiro was a programmer.

Not really. She being the rival was never a thing. That was just a rumor that spread like fire after someone made a comment with the image of that promotional art but without the context. She was intended to be the mastermind at some point though. But then those aspects that were scrapped for Akane where implemented for Tsumugi.

The two gas masks twins? Those were important characters that we would occasionally see in cutscenes that would be a part of the Future Foundation, which would add on to the lie that the Future Foundation were the evil ones that we were made to believe at the beginning of the game. Which might explain Ibuki’s bêta gas mask: she was supposed to be the traitor. ^^

I think the gasmaks is suposed to be the characters as ultimate despair, since most didn't know that class 77 was ultimate despair, they probaly hid their faces alongside other things to hide their identities. 43:14 the SHSL zombie she was used as a foundation for mikans design, it’s explained in the sdr2 art book in mikans character description when you translate it :} (I think the character design process profiles r also in the new book idk?) the talent was changed but she’s mentioned to be mikans origin a few times before her personality & talent were both changed later on & she became more of a victim type character! it’s pretty interesting tbh

I have concept for this character. Maybe they will revive the one who die, but monokuma decide to kill her because of it. Maybe shls zombie could revive people, but their memories are changed a bit. Or shls zombie could be the mastermind

I feel like the unused gas mask characters might’ve originally been future foundation members or something, since the tragedy polluted all the air. Plus they look like colleagues to me rather than siblings.
I think twin characters would be very interesting for Danganronpa. Especially in a situation where one of them becomes a killer and the characters accuse the wrong twin. So the other twin has to fight to not be wrongly chosen while also getting messed up because they'll have to execute their twin.

The second game takes place in a simulation meant to be an escape from reality -> The killing game causes it to become closer and closer to what actually happened (like with Fuyuhiko's eye, or the chapter 2 motive) -> In the first game the air was apparently polluted in the outside world -> People maybe would have worn gas masks to try to escape from that -> Characters wearing gas masks in the NWP would have been a reference to this (and another thing that clashed with the island atmosphere)

31:40 i have a self insert Danganronpa character and shes kinda plus sized, she also has three outfits, the first outfit is similar to Shirogane, the second is similar to Saionji's (i actually changed my self inserts last name to Saionji because theyre twins that look and act nothing like eachother), and the last outfit is hard to explain, its kinda like Celestes skirt, plain black with ruffles on the bottom, attached to the bottom of the skirt are upside down crosses, the skirt is a corset skirt (like Shiroganes) tgat goes under her chest, the top is black (has a cutout like one of Kirumis beta designs) with slightly puffy sleeves (like Sonias), shes wearing black leg and arm warmers with platform heels.

Why do the Sparkling Justice Peko and Fuyuhiko manager design look so much like they belong in an Animal Crossing game?
The twins design made me realize how cool it could be as a concept. like imagine not knowing which twin the blackened was or Twin A killing Twin B and pretending to be them in the trial
Chiakis beta designs makes me believe even more that she was intended to be fully an ai and the dr3 writers came up with the idea that she was a real person last minute. The fact that her first name is a mash-up of chihiros name, her having the same birthday as him, and the fact that her beta designs looked exactly like him points to alter ego/chihiro creating her ai will little outside inspiration
(I also just didnt like the fact that chiaki was a real person in dr3 but thats a whole other can of worms)
I completely agree, it's pretty clear that Chiaki was supposed to just be an ai based on chihiro/alter ego but then they decided to change it in the making of DR3 because of how popular her character is and they had make up some bs reason for how that was possible

It’s very clear from the concepts that they were REALLY trying to make buff fuyuhiko work but none were quite right. Sometimes a character just doesn’t work the way you wanted them too and you have to step back and take a new approach. But hey that what concept art is for, your making a CONCEPT, an idea, getting a feel for what you want.
I'd love a rumor video! No matter how false they turned out to be. Visiting rumors always strike me as some sort of nostalgic, it's like a way to revisit the parts of the Fandom when all we could do was speculate and imagine what the games would be like if said speculation was true.
For instance there was a rumor that the area you played in in V3 was a legitimate prison and all the participants were known criminals. It drastically changed how I thought the narrative would go, like one about punishment vs rehabilitation. I love the game we got, but some of these speculated plots are too cool to let disappear into the internet.
Seeing Nekomaru with all these smaller designs makes his backstory make more sense. He isn’t able to play sports himself because a heart condition holds him back. That always seemed strange with his final design.
I think what they might have been going for with the Sparkle Justice face was giving someone that face, then mentioning they look like Sparkle Justice, someone uses a Sparkle Justice Mask during a kill, and that frames the person with the similar face. Or if that was Peko’s original face, maybe she was gonna be more comedic, only to actually be a crazy badass. Makes me wonder if that persona she put on while wearing the mask was a in-joke to her original personality.
Something else that ties Akane to Junko - both grew up in poverty.
I could see Mahiru being the original protagonist. She was always oddly plain compared to the rest of the cast, and that’s usually a protagonist trait.
Bakugan-looking Hajime looks like he'd be the Ultimate Bowler.
I saw the gas mask characters and I immediately thought of Jataro from UDG. Maybe the creators originally wanted an ultimate artist with a tragic back-story similar to Jataro's but later it got scrapped and the character was reused for Jataro instead. Also the female design in particular with her light hair and dark skin reminds me of Angie from V3 and she was the ultimate artist so maybe those beta designs were repurposed in the end after all. But im just speculating, I highly doubt what I said is what really transpired. But those gas mask designs were really cool and I'd have loved to see a character like that be a part of the game.

Honestly, I don't know why but I actually like the Mobster's Astro-Boy and Justice Ibuki (Not as much as Gas Mask Ibuki of course). Think they are cool designs, although it looks like it's a mask instead of an actual face.

Ok but imagine this. The generic teruteru design makes him this plain soft boy who’s easy to like and forgettable in crowd, and uses that to show just how awful people like that can be with having him be more emotionally manipulative to create someone seemingly nice, but really just sleezy. A face in the crowd, yet someone who can garner sympathy and tug at your heartstrings with a well practiced sob story. Granted if they did lean into this character it would be much harder to genuinely sympathize with him when all the cards are laid out but I think it would be an interesting angle for a perverted character with such a trustworthy talent.

I fell like if siblings were actually playing in the killing game would be so much interesting because of the dynamic would go. I had like one idea of one of the siblings were about the get killed by another classmate but their brother or sister saves them by killing the person so now they are the blacken. So the sibling that get saved tries their best to get them on them so they could save their sibling, but as always they blacken is found and it would be a very sad execution.
What if "Zombie Girl" is supposed to be an assistant to the evil mascots, Monomi and Monokuma, and the brain she is holding would be "Junko's" brain? Or something along the lines of "Zombie Girl" being the vessel of AI Junko in the game?

Fun fact: Chiaki’s name is a combination between the first 3 letters of Chihiro and the last 3 letters of Fujisaki. It also links with the fact that Chiaki was an AI and Chihiro was a programmer.
