Being a western dangan ronpa fan in 2013 meant waiting for a couple people in japan to translate screenshots into text and images hosted on a weird forum that was only unlocked for free certain times of the year. We were fed scraps and we loved it.
That's pretty awesome, I miss when game developers did slow info drips like that. I feel like you don't see that much anymore these days.
I remember those days, I remember someone reposted those screenshots/translations on a Tumblr blog and included the trials from RUclips videos.
I remember gushing to my parents about DanganRonpa when I was in middle school and my step mom was genuinely concerned that I was planning on actually killing people lmao
we convinced our middle school to let the high schoolers run the anime club instead of teachers (it was after school, in a k-12 school, without any of the elementary kids,) and that was the first time i watched danganronpa :) and it was one of my few good memories of that school. Whenever a teacher did walk by, they didn't bother to read subtitles anyway, and the dub didn't exist yet.
ive been in my danganronpa phase for 2 years now
i dont think its a phase anymore
It’s so obvious how much work went into this series (and all your videos). The transitions, overall editing, pacing, and thorough explanations all made for a wonderful watch. I wasn’t originally going to watch these since I felt like I new most everything about the Danganronpa series, but I walked away learning a lot! Great video :)
Thank you so much for the kind words and I’m really happy enjoyed the video! It’s comments like these that make all the hard work worth it in the end. I learned a lot more making this video than I ever expected to as well, haha. Thanks again!
My first exposure to Danganronpa was the anime adaption of the first game and god damn I wish I started with the games, I love this series, I wish I could experience it all over again, I can't describe fully how much I love Danganronpa, from its talented fans, the awesome music, the amazing fan creations, my life wouldn't be the same without this series existing.
Fantastic video
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it!! It’s a great series and definitely one made by many passionate and talented developers. Looking forward to seeing the games Kodaka and the rest of the DR team make in the future!
I can't believe the algorithm just slept on this. Just came from your Ace Attorney vid and I love Danganronpa 😔
Thanks so much!! I’m really happy with how it turned out, but yeah, it definitely didn’t get many views sadly. Still though, I’m glad you enjoyed it! 👍👍
What the fuck i came from that video too i didnt look at the view count, i expected this video to have thousands of views. Im sure youll get those views eventually if you keep making videos this good!!
@@germansantapop7598 Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!! Yeah, this video did pretty poorly but can't win'em all unfortunately. Thanks for watching!
I was the inverse. The algorithm chose this video for me.
Seems like RUclips is stepping up their game for once in terms of what videos to send in that little sidebar they have.
I remember in 2013 when one of my forum friends used Celestia Ludenberg as his pfp and introduced me to the world of Danganronpa. I didn't start watching playthroughs of it until 2015ish and the random explosion of the series when my favorite gaming youtubers (Jay from the Kubz Scouts who is THAT DUDE) started playing around 2018 I think (was so odd because I started watching him around 2014 so it felt like 2 worlds colliding.
I would say my interest in Danganronpa is an ever-revolving door of "which interest am I gonna hyperfixate on now?" It's in rotation with the Hunger Games, makeup, Pokemon, and watching Twitch streamers along with the occasional "make art" (though they can overlap. Right now I'm in a Pokemon/Danganronpa hybrid, leaning more Pokemon at the moment). What I love is how this franchise, without an official release (and Kodaka moving on to different things. Good for him) still has new content in the form of similar games and fangans.
Even though i stopped watching Danganronpa videos like 2 years back, I will still forever love this series
Really enjoyed watching the videos over the holidays. Been Playing Danganronpa 1 for the first time on Switch and watching these videos makes me eager to start 2 way sooner than i thought.
Nicely Done!
Thanks so much and glad you're enjoying the series! The first game is by far my favorite, but the sequel really makes big improvements to the mechanics and adds a lot of new stuff. Make sure once you're done the sequel to watch the DR3 anime too on Funimation.
Considering the fact that Kaede’s Japanese VA passed away last year, I wonder if she’ll be recast like Monokuma was. After all, she’s one of the series main protagonists.
I had completely forgotten that happened sadly. I’d imagine they’d definitely recast her though.
It genuinely blew my mind to only see 500 views. This video deserves way more!
Thanks so much, really glad you enjoyed it!! Yeah, this video performed really bad for me unfortunately. The perils of creating content on RUclips though I suppose, haha.
Wow. Thanks for this video. You've sparked my interest for these heavily anime-looking games and now I'm going to give these a try!
Awesome! They’re definitely a very unique experience. Let me know what you think and thanks so much for watching!
Your editing just keeps getting better and better man, really enjoy watching your work whether I even know or like the topic. I always find something cool you did I want to try while simply watching it. Your channel and work is far overdue for blowing up. If I could pay someone to do my video editing for me, you'd be at the top of the list as someone that could match or exceed what I'm already doing. Now to go watch the rest of this, despite never having heard of this series in my life.
Thanks so much man, I really appreciate the kind words as always, especially from someone else who does amazing work like yourself! I decided to take a break from RUclips for a little while after finishing this video series up since I just am having a tough time finding much success and it's really killing my mental health. I'm certainly going to continue supporting my friends' channels though and it'll even give me some time to catch up on a lot of stuff I missed so keep the awesome shmup content coming!. Thanks again dude!
31:50 I'm starting to love the "knock-out" effect for discarded ideas whenever it pops up heheheh!
It’s definitely become a staple in my videos, haha! 😂
Ok wow, this video was honestly amazing.
The things that surprised me the most was the japan-only things and early release stuff.
And you using Pixel Partners footage was a pleasent surprise, they are such a great Let's Play channel, that was nice :)
Thanks a ton for the kind words! This video was really interesting to research for and such a crazy series to play through. It was exhausting, but a lot of fun! And yeah, Pixel Partners are great, really appreciative of them letting me use their footage! Thanks again for watching!
I’ve always been really curious about these games. Great job in the video!!
Thank you! It's a pretty crazy series with some great games and writing. Worth at the very least checking out the first game.
omg... such a good recap of the danganronpa series. its crazy cause danganronpa has been a big fixation of mine since 2021 and i STILL learn something new whenever i watch these types of videos (i also just enjoy watching recaps of my fixations tbh) thx for making this video i liked it alot. this vid deserves MORE VIEWS
Thanks so much, really appreciate the kind words and am happy you enjoyed it! I probably spent more time on this video than nearly any other documentary I've put together so I'm always extra to happy to hear that someone enjoyed this video in particular. What's your favorite game in the series?
@@RewindArcade no problem!!! but my favorite game in the series would def be dr2, i have really fond memories when it comes to that game (i played it with my gf!) and the plot twists toward the end (specifically the last two trials) are one of my favorite moments out of the entire series. but in all honestly i loved ALL the games except drv3, drv3 was just... so slow and i really did not enjoy that ending. still love danganronpa at the end of the day
DR2 definitely had a great twist towards the end and I really loved the game’s setting. I feel the same way about V3, the ending really ruined the entire game for me. Curious to see how Kodaka’s new game turns out in in a few months.
How does this only have 83 likes??? This video is extremely well made and interesting!
Thank you so much, I appreciate the kind words! Unfortunately RUclips didn't really push this one too hard and it kind of flopped. It was fun to make though!
Very informative and well made
Thanks a lot man!! This documentary doesn't get much love so I'm always VERY happy when people enjoy it, haha, Appreciate you watching!
33:30 Haiji was going to be your sidekick, but instead, as the Game Grumps once said, (around 2013ish,) "How do you ruin any likeable character? Just make him a ped0phile!" (But to be real, his voice acting lines were so good that they had to ruin him somehow.)
Thanks!
Thank you for the support!
How come do you have so little views? You clearly put a lot of work in your videos.
I wish I knew, but sadly RUclips gonna RUclips, haha. Thanks for the kind words though, glad you enjoyed it!
Marathoned it in 2 weeks? How did you sleep? Agree with you that the first is the best and the third is the weakest. Been watching your videos over the last couple of days. You're doing excellent work!
I pretty much played Danganronpa games from when I woke up to when I went to sleep, haha. It was… an experience. 😅
Glad you’re enjoying my videos, thanks so much for watching!
DJ Slope gave you a huge shout-out on his Slopescast podcast. Keep up the great work!
Oh wow, I’ll have to check it out, thanks for the heads up!
This Danganronpa vid is truly well done. That shout-out really was no joke. He specifically mentioned your Katamari video if you try to listen for shout-out it was one of the late December episodes of the 2021 podcast.
Thank you so much, really happy you enjoyed it! I’ll check out the Slopescast episode, thanks again for the heads up. 👍👍
I am enjoying this video so far but I do want to add something- The original game got a Fanmade English version before it finally got localized in English. I know this because when I saw the anime in the Fall of 2013, people were already comparing the anime to the game and that there were English Let's Plays of the English Fan translated game. I watched NicoB's Let's Play of the game.
@20:59- HAHAHAHAHA!!! I actually think that when coming up with a story as complex as any of the DR games with huge twists, coming up with the ending is your best bet, that way everything falls into place nicely hehe.
@59:40- THANK YOU for mentioning the Fangan community! Did you know they even made a Fangan Awards on Twitch? It's really something lol.
Overall great video! I personally haven't played any of the games because of money and other games just had a higher priority with the spare cash I did have. But I still love this franchise. From a story perspective, here's my opinion of each-
1. DR1- Fav story and plot twists. Kyoko is my fav DR char still.
2. DR2- Favorite setting and better cast then original and I enjoyed the mystery, but it had the easiest plot twists to figure out, with only 2 exceptions. Oh, Gundam is best boy in the franchise for me and I do ship him and Sonia lol.
3. DR: Despair Girls- Most Disturbing story. Toko gets best char arc in the franchise. Weakest protag, I did not like Komaru half of the time. Loved how this came connected the first 2 games though.
4. DR3 Anime- Worst and best moments in the franchise. Worst coming from Future Arc, it had the weakest cast with the only exceptions being Kizakura and Seiko. Others were wasted potential, boring, or downright hateful (Ruruka is the worst char in the franchise, she has NO redeeming qualities for me). Best coming from Despair Arc and Hope Arc. Despair's first 2 episodes had me laughing my head off and Hope Arc had me fangirling the entire time. I did like the main twist of Future Arc, but it has the weakest Mastermind in my opinion for their whole motivation just didn't sit right with me.
5. DRV3- Biggest brain melt because of that ending, but now I am fine with it. Best overall cast, I liked every single char, even the more controversial ones *coughs*See-saw*coughs*. Also I have a crush on Rantaro, he's my husbando for the franchise lol. Best ship is Shuichi and Kaede lol. Shuichi for me is the strongest protagonist. However, I do think that Koichi is the best written char in the franchise, for me he also brought the charm that Nagito lacked (who just went from one extreme to the next).
Now I know this video came out from AI Somnium Files: Nirvana Initiative came out, but I did find it hilarious that the game had a few DR references (I think the first game had them too, but I can't remember).
Anything that Kodaka does now, it'll automatically have my attention, the man is a mad genius in my eyes lol.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video! I was definitely aware of the fan translation though I was trying to mainly cover the official release timeline of the series (outside of obviously the Fangan community near the end), but after thinking about it more now I do wish I had at least given it a mention.
DR1 is by far my favorite in the series from top to bottom, but I still enjoyed most of the sequels too (though I'm not as crazy about V3's ending as most people, haha). I am HUGE Uchikoshi fan, especially with the Zero Escape series probably being my favorite visual novel franchise out there, but strangely I haven't had time to play AI The Somnium Files quite yet. Hoping to remedy that soon though!
Thanks again for watching!!
Jut came to say I think it's cool that you used the girl to represent the protagonist of V3 lol
Haha, I try to avoid spoilers for people who haven’t played the games yet, even if they probably don’t know it’s a spoiler. 😂
Never heard of that Kyoko Kirigiri Japan-only spinoff. Are there spoilers out there? Or is it non-canon?
I'm not really sure if it's considered officially canon or not since there's not a ton of information about it, especially due to the manner in which it was released. I only know that it takes place before the events of the first game so it is "technically" on the timeline. There's a full playthrough of it on the channel linked below though if you want to check it out: ruclips.net/user/juicedup14
How ironic, V3 is actually my favorite.
For me the ranking is
1: V3
2: DR2
3: DR1
4: DR:AE
5: DR3
I just hate the major mastermind of the franchise for being unnecessarily shoved in for DR2, and becoming so increasingly OP in DR3 that I wonder how Makoto beat them in the first place.
I definitely agree with you on the DR2 mastermind. It felt very forced and a bit unnecessary. 😅
@@RewindArcade at least it payed off as one of the best jokes in the franchise when the mastermind of V3 tried to convince the remaining students that the mastermind of the previous 2 games was behind it all, because "it's always them"🤣🤣🤣
that was basically Kodaka admitting "yeah, I have become predictable, haven't I?"
Oooh, a bit predictable, but interesting choice. For me it's
1: V3
2. DR:AE
3. DR1
4. DR2
5. DR3A
Izuru Kamukura was the mastermind for SDR2, which is why Junko showed up. Her goal was to drive the remaining students into ultimate despair to become her minions. Izuru was called the Ultimate hope so I thought it made sense that she'd want him to take charge of it all/blame him.
@@dan_man3087I'm surprised that you consider AE to be in your top three. Would you explain why, as I know very many might disagree with that but I'll listen!
47:25 why are there two now?
It's pronounced "Mano-Kuma"
I was going with the Japanese pronunciation. :)
@@RewindArcade okaay. So japanese people pronounce monochrome as "moe-nochrome" as well? Well, you learn something new everyday.
Huh
1st games is easily the worst of the trilogy
The 1st game is my favorite, but I certainly understand why people like the other games more. 👍
@@RewindArcade 💀
@@toooydoeurSaying the first game is the worst in the trilogy is saying something considering how bad UDG is and how controversial V3 was. I'm curious to know why you think this.
@@Locastorm-qg6rv I said trilogy aka not counting udg. Cuz it had the weakest set of trials and the weakest cast. Atmosphere is shnice tho
@@toooydoeur Oh that was my mistake for including it. I don't know why I thought of every game collectively. But yeah, I can see why you'd think that!
Intro is so bloody long I lose interest in the video
