    Honestly the worst thing NJs did to Gods was the choreo 😅 that choreo doesn't fit that song (the song doesn't really needs a choreo) and their voices could have go a little be further to be an epic anthem, the cover of Girls on fire was everythig for me, i even have it on my playlist on Spotify because is that iconic

    • @cranburrey
      @cranburrey День назад +2

      Oh you're so real for that because I cannot remember a single thing about the choreo other than the wonky arm movements in the chorus. It's also very plain for a group like NJ who is known to have upbeat and energetic choreos

      I never understood why riot chose another choreographer for Gods instead of the usual NJ team, when they're already famous for good choreo 😭

    i loooooove videos like these. whether we like it or not kpop at the end of the day is a business and it’s so important that we as fans start learning the ways of the trade, because we are at the center of this billion-dollar industry. we are the views, the sales, and the streams. and learning the concept of sonic identity is a greatt way to start doing more research on how the music industry operates so we know what we’re funding. i loved this video and the way u explained thiss

    • @soapydayfly
      @soapydayfly  День назад +6

      for sure. the conclusion in my first draft talked about our ability as fans to analyse sonic identity in more detail. i pasted it below** in case you wanted to read it. the way you describe it is much better; people may think k-pop is fantastical and beautiful and home to a lot of great art, and though true (from time to time), as fans and consumers, we have a responsibility to learn how these massive corporations are essentially just find new ways to suck our wallets dry. sorry that's sounded a bit cynical, but you get what i'm saying haha
      ** "But I think sonic identities, in the eyes of most fans, are established by debut. Especially with the high-turnover rate that k-pop seems to have nowadays, the amount of time groups get to capture the eyes of fans seems to shrink each year. So, I thought it was pretty fair game to analyse groups’ brands through the lens of a fan because, after all, I don’t really have much connection to the K-pop industry besides being a fan."

    • @sebaseuu
      @sebaseuu День назад +1

      @ agreed! we are consumers before we are fans, and it is indeed our responsibility to do our research and understand how the system works.

    I think that the best example of a group changing their sound in a good way is SHINee, I'd even say it plays a big part in why they are still going strong 17 years after debut. From the get go they were marketed has a contemporary group that re invents itself with every comeback, they managed to make every comeback completely unique (new genres every comeback) while still always maintaining that special SHINee sound that makes them THEM. You never know what you'll get in the next comeback, thus always keeping it fresh, but you know it will still sound like SHINee and that it will always be GOOD because the members have the last say and they refuse to release something they don't think is good.

    • @rashiagarwal3113
      @rashiagarwal3113 21 час назад +1

      ShiNee is definitely a front runner in this aspect but most of SM groups are pretty versatile in sounds from GG, Exo, Red velvet. I guess it’s also the artists talent to sing in many styles , something I have noticed 4th/5th gen artists can’t do.

    • @Ofra8191-
      @Ofra8191- 16 часов назад +1

      @rashiagarwal3113 some 4th and 5th idols have potential, but unfortunately, the companies these days are not giving them nearly enough vocal lessons, they can barely sing in their chosen genre, let alone in multiple ones.
      I'd say, out of 4th gen, ONEUS are the most genre switching ones (and they do it well), and if we also include k-bands, then ONEWE are a great example of versatility they do multiple genre and they do them amazingly (and the vocals there are divine..)

    i really appreciated how you incorporated a comparison with nj's and girls on fire. i personally dont have my own opinion on either version of the song, but hearing the differences side by side was a great way to prove your point!
    additional to this video, i would love to know more of your thoughts especially with the trappings of a sonic identity and stagnancy! sorta of like an opposite point to your video, you explained what happens when artists change or try songs that arent their 'identity' and how it can be good/bad, but im curious about your thoughts on when an identity leads to "the same song in different fonts".

    • @soapydayfly
      @soapydayfly  День назад +4

      good question! ultimately, k-pop is a business, and executives and shareholders like knowing that any investments into a group will have high returns. i've met a lot of ppl like this, and they're all about calculated risk. in k-pop, that could mean asking questions like "will doing this weird/niche concept alienate or intrigue viewers?" or "will having more members draw more eyes to the group or scare off potential fans?" so, a lot of companies wrap what is actually a very basic concept/group with some cool-looking ribbon for fear of rocking the boat too much and losing money.
      that being said, business is all about trying to find formulas that maximize profit. thus, once these companies supposedly find their golden goose, they'll use that recipe for success over and over, adding little tweaks each time so fans don't notice how similar the output is. sometimes, the tweaks are enough to keep people interested or the original was so popular that people don't mind a little copy-and-paste or the fanbase is so big that it doesn't matter.
      this approach is why we see things like what happened to everglow/blackpink. another example that i included in my first draft was actually AOA! their run post-"confused" (i.e., "miniskirt" onwards) felt so exploitative and repetitive to me.
      sorry if i worded that poorly, but i hope that made sense lol

    Once again I loved it. The subject of the video touches on a really interesting point that I think doesn’t only affect the Kpop industry but I would say music as a whole. Now if we’re only talking about Kpop I think that sonic identities are great, beneficial and in today’s age where you have so many artists/groups emerging, it’s very important to have a sound identity. I’ve always considered Sonic Identity as a 'trampoline' something that definitely makes you get noticed pretty quickly if you find the good formula. It is a trap if that Sonic Identity is all you have to offer. I think the problem when it comes to Kpop groups is that their discographies are weak with only 'mini albums' and no real outstanding projects so to speak. So there isn’t a lot of space to diversify, especially if the group has a Sonic Identity that works and makes tons of cash. Full Albums have always been the occasion to display your 'sound collection'. The thing is most companies never really think of building a body of work for their groups which explains why the discographies will feel surface level, generic and repetitive. That’s why they invest a lot on visuals, aesthetic, etc. A sound Identity is something that should be STRECHED and not confined. It’s important to have a blueprint sonically but it all comes to the creative effort of working around that sound intelligently!

    I disagree about New Jeans singing soft for a powerful anthem like GOD as a bad thing. At the moment, I can't stand New Jeans since they are more known for harmful drama than good music. But their delicate singing against the powerful choir and instrumentals provide a contrast that was perfection. It sends chill down my spine as if I am seeing a fairy floating delicately towards me with a roaring giant dragon behind her. EPIC.

    New jeans' identity is so confusing and diversified at the same time.
    New jeans are not remotelt Y2K, and people need to stop with this rhetoric or give people concept they don't even know to a group based on one or two singles. No group has ever had a Y2K concept other than what Aespa has done. New Jeans can be nostalgic, why not but Y2K is a strech.
    Y2K Is all about being futuristic as they thought in the 90s that the 2000s panic would all put us in a robotic/hi-tech environment, not that Y2K people put on Newjeans (I don't blame new K-Pop stans, some of them only know K-pop)
    Newjeans, ILLIT, and those new groups never stated anywhere that they had a proper concept, and this is what's happening with those New kpop group they have no proper branding and just jump on trends.
    The problem I have with Hybe is them not priorizing their resources on two groups (Lesserafim and Newjeans) and basically "steal" what Newjeans could've done and gave them this useless song "GOD" like-
    New jeans were and are an emerging girl group that renews themselves litteraly at every single comeback and Perfect Night, Magnetic, My world and Lucky Girl Syndrome could've been one of their songs but no Hybe was too greedy and had to make a concurrent group.
    Magnetic is a Jersey Club Pluggnb Disco inspired sound, and you had people making remixes of Newjeans songs in that genre way before ILLIT was a thing and even had Newjeans making challenges on those remixes that ressemble Magnetic. (Their soft singing was their brand and the reason why all those remixes worked. Even fans made fanmade demo for New Jeans that ressemble Illit songs and vision just saying. And It's so funny cause people wanted Newjeans to be dreamcore for their next comeback, and now people want to act like they could've never been dreamcore when they kept renewing themselves.)
    I'm mad at Hybe, not concentrating all that energy on one group and basically making a copy of them (Illit are so talented for that mess). They are a big record label. The only reason why they would do that was money.
    They even gave perfect night to Lesserafim when they knew in their right mind this song fitted Newjeans and would've made them bigger they ever been (The impact would've been crazy considering they dropped Super Shy in the summer.)
    They have all those PR, A&R Team, and Promotions, and they were like, "Let's make a borderline copy of our best working groups to gather contoversy." (IK Min Hee Jin and Newjeans litteraly are not blueprint and copied/heavily inspired from other artist but we can't act as if all the other kpop group started doing Jersey Club even more, make teenagers in the west coming of age type of concept, Streetwear, "Y2K fashion")
    No one owns a concept that's true. But why would you debut two groups with similar concepts with a gap of two years ?
    It's like if YG or Teddy debuted Blackpink, Babymonster and Meovv all next to each other, it wouldn't work cause they all do the same type of song and one group will end up having their opportunities taken.
    Their (ILLIT) last album Cherish was making me think of Fifty Fifty even though it was REALLY PRETTY ORIGINAL and that was fine because It's concurrency and they are not in the same company, and it was also a concept that REALLY differenciate them from what Lesserafim and Newjeans had done before.
    It's litteraly the problem I also had with BOYBEXTDOOR and TWS and Enyphen and &TEAM but they actually managed to differentiate their sound based on each other while you had Lesserafim and Illit singing songs (Hybe gave them) that would've a better potential if they were given to Newjeans but no hybe had to sabotage them. (I would even Sneak Touch by Katseye. It could've been an English debut for New Jeans, and where was the Pink Pantheress Collab ???)
    I'm just baffled and done. You would never see JYP or YG or SM do that, and they also have a big team like Hybe, but hybe did all the contrary. No matter how you tell me that Hybe has different labels under them, it's still the CEO of Hybe that approves of the decisions and is okay with concurrence between Its own colleagues.

ETA v. supernatural). keywords are "within their concept" - gods just doesn't fit in with anything they've done before and feels too out of left field for me.
      also there's nothing wrong with doing "the same style over and over again" as long as the songs feel fresh and new. imo style and sound should be consistent or share a common thread from cb to cb. what's important is that they don't just take the same approach or have the same interpretation of that style/sound each time.
