    This has improved my swim so much. I didn't realize that it's not necessarily about how fast you move but it's more about technique and being efficient. Thank you Stew awesome video

    by calculating the marking on the side of the pool, here the estimation:
    - his height was about almost 2 meters tall
    - it is 23 meters pool (~25 yards)
    - one complete stroke is 4 meters.
    - one scissor kick propels him about 2 meters (or his one body height)
    - one arm pull propels him about 1 meter each (or his half body height)
    - his push from the wall (+ double hand pull) until breaking out his first stroke is about 10 meters (or about 5 times his body height)
    - he completes the pool length by 1 wall push (10 meters), 3 full stroke (12 meters), and 1 incomplete stroke (1 meter).
    if the swimmer height is average (175 cm) and swim as efficiently as him, then:
    - 23 meters pool will be completed in 4 complete stroke.
    - 50 meters pool will be completed in 13.5 complete stroke.
    - 500 meters distance will be completed in 141.8 complete stroke

      Not sure why you need to do all that but yes this pool is a 25 yard pool. No calculation needed - just ask.

    PRACTICE - plus you need to get into better shape if kicking off and pulling gets you winded. PULL / BREATHE / KICK / GLIDE = practice it.

    KEEP SWIMMING. Endurance means you have to endure many hours of swimming each week. I would focus on getting 1500-2000m each day - 4-5 days a week if you want endurance.

      2K per day is easy, do 5K, and every once in a while do 7K, also do it 6 days a week.

      @@IadoreU-Today Sure it is, but the test is 500m and the weekly timed swims are 2 miles in the ocean with fins at SEAL training. You are talking apples and oranges. I am not building swimmers - I am building spec ops candidates.

    Stew, I shared this with my niece Paloma who taught her daughter to swim but has trouble swimming herself. I learned how to swim from watching videos like this and from the Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness; one of my favorite books since 2000.

    I don't do breath holds personally AND did not train for it prior to BUDS. You will have more of an issue with all the running vs a breath hold or 50m swim day at BUDS. Trust me. Focus on efficient underwater swims - 4-5 strokes per 25m.

    what i like about this style is that you stay underwater for a really long time and like they say when you swim underwater and stay streamlined, it is way faster than swimming with your head constantly out of the water.

    I'm right with you... I'm 6' and it felt the same way for me at first, but it just takes a lot of swimming to get it down. Here's the secret - there is no secret, besides practice.

    You exhale at the kick fully and then turn to inhale during the top arm / bottom arm pull. Exhale though mouth and nose...

    I am currently trying to get my CSS better and there are many things I have to work on, but the breath hold part is not one of them. I have done a lot of breath hold training in prep for SEALs and freediving. My max so far is 5 minutes and 1 second. Really I do not think this accounts for all that much because it is a static breath hold. I think the primary thing you might want to do is to get more comfortable while lacking oxygen and more comfortable lacking oxygen underwater.

    The storke shown on Seal/Swcc site does not have the 2 second glide like that. In fact I quote " Once you're flat Imediately pull #1." It's confusing that a guy can't find consistent advice on this stroke. Yet, still thank you Stew for ur videos

    I think I have the timing right for the CSS, but I am confused on how much I should flutter kick. I have seen a lot of your videos and other SEALs' videos and it seems that the amount of flutter kicking varies greatly. I find your videos to be the most informative and so I decided to ask for your opinion on it.

    Hey Stew, what do you recommend doing to improve endurance with the css? Maintaining good technique (4-6 strokes across) the first two laps isn't hard for me but after that game over. Appreciate the help

    Yes - it is much quicker with athletes of any sport to be honest. If you define an athlete as a person who can see something and physically repeat it - then yes.

    It's amazing to see somebody swim one lane (25m) with just three strokes. When I was younger I had been swimming on competitions. His 'kick' (In German we call it scissoring) is really hefty and it will be pretty difficult to correct it!
    He could even perform better IF HE DID NOT WEAR THOSE BOARD SHORTS! ;-)

      Yes - this is a progression to swimming with fins in clothes / carrying gear in the ocean. Those strong scissor kicks / flutterkicks come in handy when in the surf. We don't call it the Combat Swimmer Stroke for nothing...

      Coz I adopted that scissoring when I was a young kid. My trainer had a hard time to get me rid of that to improve my speed for competitions. It must be very difficult to separate those two techniques and not mix them.

    Will keep it up, and get more conditioned. When he is under water does he breath out of his nose? Or does he hold his breath until he brings his he's up to breath? I feel like my body sinks a little too much. I just need a lot of practice.

    Hey I'm doing a lifeguard course, I'm 100% self taught but my technique is good (or so the instructor says)
    I've to do a vice grip procedure (spinal injury stabilization so my hands and arms are in use) and I was wondering could I use this method for it? I know I wont be able to do the arm movements but would the leg movements be enough?

    hey Stew I plan on going to buds, only question I have is what can I do to better myself for the 50m underwater swim? I do crossfit and compete right now for staying in shape but not really anything for swimming unless they have it in a competition

    Is 5 strokes per length a good place to start working on speed? I've been working on perfecting the stroke for several months and every now and then I manage to cross the pool with 4 strokes, but I'm only 5'10" and don't see myself being able to do what he just did here. Also I have this problem with coming to almost a complete stop when I recover from the double arm pull after pushing off the wall, even though I kick at the same time like the guy here does. Any and all help and advice you could give is tremendously appreciated.

    Stew do you mind posting some FreeStyle info for the AIRR guys? My last pst I hit 7:54 with the freestyle and i contribute it to my dad helping me with my wall turns (less time on the wall shaved off about 20 seconds), but would love some free style tips for training to get low 7min mark or high 6 min mark. Thanks.

    Hey Stew, for the pull on the css I see people bringing their arms like all the way down and some don't even go below the waist. Is this just personal preference? And if so which one in your opinion is better or more effective? Thanks for all the vids by the way I learned the css just based off of your videos alone

      YOu mean the bottom arm right? The top arm should look exactly like a freestyle pull (different recovery obviously). Yes the bottom arm can go all the way down if you prefer OR you can do the breast stroke scull version for the bottom arm pull. Preference really.

    Most SEALs have advanced college degrees, so they usually start after college. Your age is fine. For any special ops team they want someone who is mature and intelligent, and the maturity comes with age.

    Stew Smith how long would you say it takes to learn the css and get it in a descent time maybe around 10 min for the 450 M? Trying to put a package together from the fleet the swim is the only thing holding me back. Plan on spending hours in the pool everyday when I get back.

      Shogun Rua it shouldn't take that long. If you can learn the stroke in as little as a single session of practicing good technique and then take about a month or six weeks to get in shape for it you should be able to get under 10 minutes

    @stewsmith How do these super effecient strokes translate in open water? Seems like a lot of effeciency is underwater recovery. Or does it not matter once you get into the open water?

    Recon does 50m underwater swim also. And drown proofing. It's hard. Go to deep end of pool put ur hands behind back or tie em and let ur air out slowly so u fall to the bottem kick up to the top and repeat until time runs out. I was not recon but my friend tried out and failed he was in better shape then me. I got 240 on my PFT. And swam all thru HS.

      Your average joe from the street is going to get maybe 5 pull ups, 50 sit ups, and a 25 minute 3 mile. Where the heck are you from? (That would be a score of 133)

      Once you get a certain time - and you want to go faster - you have to practice that pace. For instance - our minimum standard here is 8:20 - which is 500 seconds / 500 yds. So when you swim 50 / 100 / 200 yd intervals each of those need to be 50 / 100 / 200 seconds respectively.

    I notice that after his scissor kick he sort of rotates back around so that his belly is facing the bottom of the pool. Is it okay if instead of rotating back towards the bottom of the pool I instead stay on my side the entire time? Also, I'm having to do more of a sprinters CSS with a smaller glide period, which I think is due to my short/stocky build. Is this okay, or must I increase my glide distance in order to have good CSS?

      That’s a good thing.
      Spend more time under the water just gliding & covering distance.
      Less strokes when you come up that way.

    Hey Stew. Been trying to work on this stroke, but get little distance with my kick off the wall+ double arm pull. I get about a quarter length of the pool(if that) before beginning the strokes, and getting over 10 strokes per length. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated

      Sounds lack of power off the wall with your legs, lack of streamline during glide, and not gliding long enough per stroke cycle. Fix that.

    I’ve been trying to learn this and I think I got the basics of the mechanics involved down. But I seem to always get some water in my nose everytime I put my head under water. Sometimes I get less water in my nose and sometimes more. How do I fix that?

    Hey stew I’m a junior in high school aiming to go to buds. I’m not sure why but I keep getting shoulder impingements and rotator cuff tendinitis in my right shoulder from swimming. I think it may be a weak scissor kick or a form issue. It would be great if you could respond and provide some advice.

      I do not know - I need to see you swimming as it could be your pull is wrong or you need to do more shoulder work (lift / calisthenics / physical therapy)...??

    Hi! I have a question. I am not a professional swimmer, but I love swimming a lot. Isnt it more natural, easy and even better to be done a breaststroke kick when you are shooting your arms forward to a stream line positin after the double arm pull? The scissor kick then seems not very effective and even is at the edge of making splashes.

      Well sure. But most Non-swimming athletes actually perform a scissor kick better than they do a breaststroke kick as those muscles are highly developed if you are a running athlete. I try to teach Breaststroke but sometimes it is futile and I go with the scissor kick. I’m not trying to build Olympian swimmers.

      @@StewSmith182 I understand. I would like to know how the seals are thaught to do that part. I did not find a video demonstrating that part excatly although it is probably not the most important part:) I dont know if the seals train it in that sequence or just push off the wall and strat doing the main stroke directly. I think I saw something like that somewhere.

      @@ivodimitrov1642 to get to BUDS you swim without fins. 99% of all swim at SEAL training and in the Teams are with fins

    But is it truly more efficient? I can make it all the way across a 25m pool "without" coming up for air, if I am calm enough and take my time, timing underwater breast-strokes just right.

    Hey Stew I was wondering if you had any advice as to how I can get through my plateau. My goal is to swim 500 in 8 minutes. I was averaging 8:30 and then plateaued. I started to swim with a baggy t-shirt and shorts in hopes the drag would help me get stronger.
    Well after a month of that I swam in just my speedo jammers and got 8:50. I could use plenty of excuses as to why it was slower but in the end I feel that time is unacceptable.
    My question is what are some other methods I can do to reach my 8min goal?

      Austin Wightman You could try cross training things such as swimming,cycling and running. It should help you decrease times.

      Do planks and tighten the core muscles, in addition to pushups, flutter kicks, and all those other PT. I found jump squats, bursting onto the top of a picnic table or rage fitness box, (sets of 20) to help burst power. The key to all this is delivering oxygen and removing C02 from the muscles, best trained by running and cross country skiing. The better you can do that, the better you swim for a given technique. Improving technique is another subject and probably easist to do after your tired, having no choice but to swim efficiently.

      If you are doing traditional swimming, not this, then consider cross-training using a bouy. It will force you to increase your upper body strength for swimming because you can't use your legs and triathletes use them all the time.

      Sure - you can say that or call a stroke a sequence of pull, BREATHE. kick, glide. Regardless efficient swimming is the goal.

    hello sir im training to pass the pst so far my 500 yard swim is to high around 16 minutes i was wondering would you recommend doing longer swims or shorter swims and more rest time

      +Manuel Campos hey I am pretty beginner at swimming also, but maybe some advice may help. I'm short 5'8 I swam 10:26 500m recently and am working on getting down to 9 where I'll be trying for PJ.
      One thing I can tell you helps more than anything is find a swim coach! At my local pool I stayed friendly and talkative and ended up getting on board with a guy who coaches tri-athelon swimmers. Prior I had difficulty swimming 200m straight lol.
      Try a Tabata method of training applied to swimming. Once you have technique pretty good, it's a lot of endurance so swim a 25m and rest only 10 seconds then kick off again. put it into sets like weight training so 5, 25m laps and rest on the wall only 10 seconds at a time. after the 5 laps take a little break then go for 10 laps, play around with a format like that. This will help force you to keep moving and push yourself. Aside from that run, and in the gym work on back and shoulder stabilizers.
