The difference is pulling harder and kicking harder. I can do a 10 min swim in the same stroke count as a 7 min swim and the difference is that I pull harder / kick harder = go faster...
Up to you really - find what works for you. I roll over to my belly from my side as a breathe then kick/glide. Some do - some dont. I do not do flutterkicks in between scissor kicks either - some do. I dont recommend it as it tends to tire your legs for the rest of the PST
Hey stew, what is the breathing pattern for this swim? Is he exhaling fully when his face is down? Also every time I do the scissor kick and try to glide I feel like I'm not going anywhere... No acceleration at all. Any help with that?
We are in Severna Park using the SP Community Center pool nearly 5-6 days a week. Our schedule is: Mon / Wed / Fri 0600 - run / pt-lift / swim Tu / Thurs 0800 swim technique / workout Friday 4pm TBD - depends on schedules of group Sat 0800 or 1300 depends on schedules of group but email me 24 hours prior to coming as we sometimes change the location due to pool availability / weather - see info above in video description...
Hi Stew, I'm hoping to go SWCC in a couple of years, but I need some advice on my css. After just a couple of laps, I start struggling to get a long glide on my push off. I feel like I can't hold my breath long enough, even though I know I can. I rush through the double arm pull just so I can take that first breath. Any suggestions? I really appreciate what you do, helping guys like myself out in their prep! Hooyah!
Go to stew smith dot com for my email / phone number to confirm your attendance. Saturday swim times are 1 or 2 pm but not every weekend. Friday swim is 0545 am
Mr Smith could you think of a reason why i can complete a lap in 8 strokes (4 strokes down & 4 back with the double arm pull) but my lap time is around 56 seconds? This guy is 4 strokibg it down the entire time but his splits are around 45-47 seconds
Hey Stew, how is it going. I know I need to come out there just to train with you guys. I am the Marine Veteran who was a Martial Arts instructor. Found out I am about an hour from Annapolis.
Really cool how a big ol' power lifter can be so decent at the CSS. I noticed how when he does his kick, he's not completely on his side, but more at an angle. Is is just a personal preference that you don't see the harm in, or would you recommend trying to shoot for being completely on your side during the kick?
Not when I'm tired, but that sprinter stroke (with no glide ) I can do 44 second 50 meter. But when I glide its 48 to 50 second 50 meters. Why is that if the sprinter stroke doesn't help? Am I kicking to weakly?
Michael Holland - we train bilaterally mainly with fins for 1-2 mile swims. Without fins we switch sides sometimes - we dont do it unless we specifically need to for testing rules. There is no written rule saying you have to switch sides every time. But some instructors require it.
Hey Mr. Smith, where do you train at. I'm in DEP and I practice my css for the PST everyday and I just wanted to know if there were any pointers to fix. I live in North Carolina.
hey stew, im getting in shape to take my PST for a contract to BUD/s and i live close to Annapolis how can i go about training with you? my CSS needs work and i could use all the help i can get.
Stew Smith is it possible to be this fast with a normal sides stroke? I'm planning on joining the Marines and they recommend to practice the standard sidestroke. thanks
Stew Smith, I am writing you in reference to coming out to Severna and working with you on the CSS. My work hours during the week makes it tough for me to come out in the mornings. Could you provide an email address so I can contact you for the Friday and Saturday times since they are TBD? Thank you. Darien Hardy

I have come to realize that some of these people who play a lot of first/third person shooters are now thinking they are true experts to military tactics and training. it actually is hilarious to me and I get a laugh out of it.

4 weeks ago I was at 11 minutes for my few, now I'm down to 9:50. Thank you so much for posting these critiques, as its been invaluable for me.
You ever go to buds @pontosurfer17

Mix of both - we have some who are 11-12 grade and many college / post college aged guys
Mormana - come join us anytime. We have a few USMC trainees here as well. We are getting in lots of rucks, runs, pt etc everyday
To me the end did look faster because he kept the momentum, with the gliding he almost halts when he start each stroke.
Come to the Severna Park community center tu/ th at 0800

personal preference
This stroke count and technique is crazy....
Are you allowed to frog kick when doing a double arm pull instead of dolphin kick?
Yes

Do they care if you splash water like he was on his dolphin kicks or any part of the stroke for that matter?
No
I notice in a lot of these swim videos, they swim on the same side the whole time. Is this only for testing purposes and they train bilaterally?

no but learn how to do an OPEN TURN. I will have some video on it in the next week.
I understand. Im about 6'4 so i was just wondering. Are there any workouts that i could do to help my pull/kick? Or does it just come with practice
any advice on how to stay on the surface of the water? Whenever I kick i keep going too far under
James Lanza I know this comment is old but when you kick you are supposed to go under

Damn 6 years later how’d you do bro? I’m shipping June 17! Kudos if you respond this late.
@@brandoncarrillo951 what’s good bro you you did you ever go to buds?
what is the length of the pool?
25 yds

Actually, standard pools are 25 meters or Olympic size is 50 meters.
I'm jealous of these guys. I can swim miles at a time, but when it comes to my 500yd swim i'm at around 10:00.

So he's doing about 3 flutter kicks while he does his pull with his hands
Zac Swift Those are really smaller rotational kicks. It actually isn’t that much of a waste of energy.

You inhale during the second arm pull. Watch more video

Do you suggest flip-turns when doing the PST?
he probably is going to try out for the SEALS if he is training with Stew.
It takes me like 20 strokes
That is way too many - you are wasting too much energy
Same here. But I just started
Css**
He is going to be a SEAL numb nuts. I only coach them. I do not teach swimming to anyone else who is not serving or going to serve. Really you again?
