Thank you POLO! Bringing back them memories.
The historical significance of this performance can not be overstated...their audience was composed of citizens of the Soviet Union (now the Russian Republic) at a time when the only way they could hear Western music was through the black market. This concert was a landmark achievement that, along with the destruction of the Berlin Wall, led to the dissolution of the oppressive Soviet regime. I am old enough to remember the threat that the Soviets represented at the time...I lived under it. It is something that today's generation can't conceive of, but it was real, and Metallica was a part of dismantling that threat, because they represented what true creative freedom could achieve.
You're right. Its the story of moses and Pharoah. Creeping death was the mist that came and killed all the first born children UNLESS you had the blood of a unblemished lamb painted above your doorway. Then the mist would "passover" your home if so.

Live Metallica shows in the 80's and 90's were an absolute marathon. So much energy, 3 hour shows, no intermission, full speed ahead. Saw them sometime around 92, but in a small field house at the NDSU campus in Fargo, North Dakota. 4000 seats. I saw Metallica at The Richfield coliseum on the And Justice tour. Creeping death live with the crowd participation is a highlight of my life. To feel one with 20,000 others in an enclosed space cant be described with words. DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE!!!!
"No one could Amp up the crowd as fast as metallica..."?!? Bro, you gotta check out Pantera-Domination Live from that same show. They played earlier that day and killed it !
Its kind of funny how Pantera, ACDC and the Black Crowes were there too but no one really remembers those acts. Everyone just refers to it being the Metallica in Moscow in 91. I mean there is a reason in that they think the crowd doubled before the Metallica set but still, kind of funny.
@@Fender1031 I would say most metal fans will remember the Pantera set as well as Metallica's. AC/DC and the Black Crowes are almost never mentioned though, I agree with that.
I was a senior in high school when this concert happened. I saw these guys many times and this, to me, is one of the most beautiful things in the world
This song was influenced by the Ten Commandments and the killing of every first born and the plague. The drummer is Lars in the video. But this song was at least partially written by Cliff Burton their former bassist that passed away.
Oh lord, I just had a flashback to being sixteen, cruising around in my friend's Camero with this blasting! 😮😄 My son just told me last week that he's trying to get us tickets to the Metallica show coming here this fall. I went to several concerts when I was younger, but never got to see these guys.
1991 was officially the year Metallica-mania ignited w/ the release of their self-titled 'black' album... 10 years after they formed in L.A, Metallica scored a #1 album and would be playing the biggest stages in the world... This being a free festival in Moscow, Russia w/ AC/DC headlining and Metallica playing the Soviet Union for the first time. They would go on to headline tours on that record from the Fall of '91 until the summer of '94... it included a run of stadium shows w/ Guns N' Roses... By the time the tour ended, the 'black' album had sold 9 million copies in the US alone and Nirvana had come & gone... thus, altering the scene forever in the 90's. It was unfortunate that after Metallica took a year off, they returned in 1996 w/ the 'Load' album and sounded like every other rock band that was popular that year, and looked like average joes w/ short hair... They were still hugely popular, but their hardcore fan base was turned off by their transformation from a heavyweight metal band into a mainstream rock band & still calling themselves 'Metallica' 😂 Sadly, Metallica never recaptured this form between 1983 to 1993...
This one brings back memories. I saw Metallica open for Ozzy in 86 back when Cliff Burton was still alive. And on the And Justice tour and Black Album. I saw MegaDeth kinda by accident even before Metallica like 85 or early 86 in a club concert I went to with a buncha bands playing. Dave Mustaine got up and played the Jump In the Fire riff off Kill 'Em All and I was like WTF? who is this dude and why is he playing Metallica's shit? LIttle did I know at the time that Dave fkn wrote a large percentage of the Metallica stuff from Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning. Times were different. No internet so info was instantly accessible. It took awhile to trickle. And musicians and actors were enegmatic. You didn't have em taking pics of their lunch and post to Instagram and be ordinary people & shit. They were like the gods of Olympus!
I seen these guys Live when I was 14. They played this song. Even though I heard it a thousand times. Nothing can really describe that feeling I got surrounded by thousands and thousands of people screaming Die! Die! and it syncing up with the song. Fucking intense. Most people would walk in and hear that and if they didnt know what was going on would walk right out like Nope! Wrong room.
I saw them live around the same time as this performance (1992) - they played just as hard and heavy in a 15,000 person arena in the middle of Canada (Winnipeg) as they did in this video. Everything you said about them is correct, they are always amazing live.
Nice. Creeping Death in my opinion is the iconic Metallica song. And not only did you finally get to it but you chose live in Moscow. The guy you didn't recognize is Jason Newsted who was the bassist from 1986-2001. Jason was the heart and soul of the band when he was in it. An absolute legend. His energy in the live shows is incredible. He left everything on the stage. Also just an all around great person. Jason's a beast. As for other Metallica songs. Ride the Lightning For Whom the Bell Tolls Call of Ktulu Battery Disposable Heroes Orion Damage Inc Blackened To Live is to Die Dyer's Eve
About 450,000 to 480,000 in attendance that day. Ridiculous internet folklore has it up to about 1.8 million in some cases at this point. Not even close it's under 500k. At 8:16 I laughed for a good 5 minutes... Reminded me of the conversations I had about this song with friends in school decades ago. I know for a fact some of my brothers are metalheadz now 🤘✌️👊
Reliable estimates have the crowd at up to 1.6 million people - that's well over two Woodstocks, which is completely fucking insane. And also wonderful.
As others have pointed out, the second guy you see on the mic is bassist Jason Newstead, who replaced Cliff Burton following his tragic death. What Jason Brought to the table during his tenure (and frankly what they have missed since his departure) was his own vocal abilities. He ability to provide James with Emphasis when James is singing, his ability to take over in the middle of a song so that James could catch his breath, and his ability to sing lead through nearly an entire song 2/3rd of the way through a concert so that James vocal cords could finish strong without being strained. Those little details help preserve the longevity of the band when on tour
Not to mention he did all that while brutally destroying his neck through the entire show. I remember reading that he suffered actual long term injury from the continual strain of his head banging every show.
My All-Time favorite Metallica song. That breakdown in the middle, always gets cranked up. Thanks for reacting to this masterpiece. Whenever you get to reacting to bands from other countries that don't sing in English, there's a band from Japan called Maximum the Hormone. The song I would suggest of theirs would be "Zetsubou Billy". Even though I don't know the Japanese language, I just love their sound. They're definitely in my top 5 of favorite bands, ever.
With all due respect to Cliff Burton... he was an absolute legend and technical genius.. But man. No bassist comes close to Jason Newstead's stage precense. Not to mention those backup vocals. Man was possessed
Earlier that day, Pantera performed in front of that gathering crowd. And the put on a hell of a show too. U should check domination from that set. It's a black and white video. That crowd was rabid!
I'm a recovered alcoholic, 15 years. Before that 15 years, I drank everyday until blackout, pass out and/or timeout. I listened to Metallica 80% of the time while driving and any other potential dangerous play. I did 8.5 years in prison, for chaotic Metallica listening I guess. They say there is a little truth in every joke and I think I just gave you that portion.
I woke up and was scrolling though RUclips and started playing this because … it’s ‘Creeping Death’.. 😂 and I realized I needed my PS5 and headphones on to enjoy the song as well and I literally hopped out of my bed and whisper yelled, “ IM COMING POLOOOO!” Sorry I just got super amped to see this actually being reacted to for the first time in a WHILE. Keep doing you dude, your content is great and genuine.
You need to read these lyrics while watching. Amazing song. Been listening to Metallica for 35 years and seen them 6 times. This is my favorite song. Crank this shit in the 4runner
Dunno if anyone's explained, but the song is about the plague that fell over Egypt in the Bible, killing the first born sons, thus 'Creeping Death'. The dude you don't recognize is their second bassist, Jason Newstead, who replaced Cliff Burton, who was killed in a tragic accident involving their tourbus. The drummer is Lars Ulrich, and he is indeed crazy on the drums.
For what it's worth, and having seen them 25 times starting in 88, there were black folks who got and were there way back then. As the years went on, more and more blacks have gotten it too. Today, it's anybodys band.
This was in Moscow 91. 1.6M people in the crowd. This song is from the bible the story of Moses leading his people from Egypt. A great song to follow this one up is The Four Horsemen, of the apocalypse.
The amount of love Lars gets as a drummer from reactors is so funny to me, considering metal fans don’t consider him in the top 100 best drummers. In fact, a lot of metal heads actually think he sucks.
I asked the bass player was his most proudest achievement in Metallica was and he said his family seeing him perform for the 1st time and this show. He wasn't even sure if they got paid or not.

I saw Metallica at The Richfield coliseum on the And Justice tour. Creeping death live with the crowd participation is a highlight of my life. To feel one with 20,000 others in an enclosed space cant be described with words. DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE!!!!
This is from their 1991 concert in Moscow. It was a free show and 1.6 million fans showed up.
Yes for a reaction to Domination. They killed it!
Metallica at their peek are different, just better song writing
@@Fender1031 I would say most metal fans will remember the Pantera set as well as Metallica's. AC/DC and the Black Crowes are almost never mentioned though, I agree with that.
I was a senior in high school when this concert happened. I saw these guys many times and this, to me, is one of the most beautiful things in the world
i remember the boxed set (live shit: binge & purge) had a vhs tape with this particular show.
It is true the band feels the crowds energy and the band gives it right back to them.
This song was influenced by the Ten Commandments and the killing of every first born and the plague.
The drummer is Lars in the video. But this song was at least partially written by Cliff Burton their former bassist that passed away.
You would love everything from these early concerts on Live Sh!t binge and purge. All of it is awesome.
Great song, great live show, great reaction.
I saw them when I was 16, or 17, AND JUSTICE FOR ALL tour, I'm 52 now. AWESOME EXPERIENCE
Oh lord, I just had a flashback to being sixteen, cruising around in my friend's Camero with this blasting! 😮😄
My son just told me last week that he's trying to get us tickets to the Metallica show coming here this fall.
They were still hugely popular, but their hardcore fan base was turned off by their transformation from a heavyweight metal band into a mainstream rock band & still calling themselves 'Metallica' 😂
Sadly, Metallica never recaptured this form between 1983 to 1993...
As we said back in '91:
"Hey, have you heard that new band from Seattle? Yeah, they're called Metallica."
Metallica died with Cliff.
@@tommc3622that’s a fact right there.
R.I.P Cliff.🫡🤘🏻
The absolute best performance of creeping death on their part, the crowd was unaware otherwise the shouts of dei would have been deafening
Sad, but true is a great Metallica song.❤
Wrong room.
Jason on the bass started singing!
Metallica, AC/DC and bands of this caliber and love for their fans, will give you that effort for two plus hours without a break. Night after night.
AC/DC
Metallica
Pantera
The Black Crowes
E.S.T. (Russian heavy metal band)
1.6 million people! That show was EPIC!
1.6 million people in the audience this was the Monsters of Rock tour in 91 in Moscow Russia
Oh Polo... you put such a smile on my face.. !! Thank you for doing this one.. one of my fave's.. and so are you!! much love! xo
What I see is - how could you not get over the top energy while playing to a crowd that size !!
They are 🔥, so many people enjoying music 🎵🎶🎵 together, beautiful ❤️
I saw them live around the same time as this performance (1992) - they played just as hard and heavy in a 15,000 person arena in the middle of Canada (Winnipeg) as they did in this video. Everything you said about them is correct, they are always amazing live.
This is the Monsters of Rock tour in Moscow...there were 1.6 million ppl there...that's the entire population of Phoenix, AZ 🤘
Ride the Lightning
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Call of Ktulu
Battery
Disposable Heroes
Orion
Damage Inc
Blackened
To Live is to Die
Dyer's Eve
About 450,000 to 480,000 in attendance that day. Ridiculous internet folklore has it up to about 1.8 million in some cases at this point. Not even close it's under 500k. At 8:16 I laughed for a good 5 minutes... Reminded me of the conversations I had about this song with friends in school decades ago. I know for a fact some of my brothers are metalheadz now 🤘✌️👊
I love that you're starting to warm up to their heavier stuff
Kirk Hammett is a criminally underrated guitarist. I think he gets overlooked because of how skilled everyone in the group is.
Seeing you give Lars so much love is so wholesome ❤. The bass player singing at the end is Jason Newsted, who has since left the band.
I love it! I’m stealing your term! “Felony Metallica!”
That is dope! Thanks for that!
Going to a Metallica concert is a great experience and every race color creed should go while they are still doing it!!
✌🏻🤟🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Slipknot '09 England, Coey Taylor's performance on Spit It Out is mind blowing.
Wherever I may roam by metallic sounds like those 2 songs. 🤘💖
Pantera domination was at same concert. absolutely phenomenal performance!!!
I woke up and was scrolling though RUclips and started playing this because … it’s ‘Creeping Death’.. 😂 and I realized I needed my PS5 and headphones on to enjoy the song as well and I literally hopped out of my bed and whisper yelled, “ IM COMING POLOOOO!”
Sorry I just got super amped to see this actually being reacted to for the first time in a WHILE. Keep doing you dude, your content is great and genuine.
You need to read these lyrics while watching. Amazing song. Been listening to Metallica for 35 years and seen them 6 times. This is my favorite song. Crank this shit in the 4runner
That’s the thing about Metallica and their fans. all are welcome race, creed, doesn’t matter just love good music and good people
Dunno if anyone's explained, but the song is about the plague that fell over Egypt in the Bible, killing the first born sons, thus 'Creeping Death'.
As having been part of the Die chant before, can only imagine what it was like with 500k people
I love your reactions. You’re genuine. I recommend you listened with the lyrics to get the full effect.
The bass guitarist and back up singer was Jason Newsted.
I love it "all you see is hair and instrument s". Awesome!
Creeping death is one of my all time favourites. That and the call of the Ktulu
These guys thrive on energy.
There is an acoustic version of this song, that is amazing. I believe they performed it during a radio interview
The guy you don’t recognize is Jason Newsted. He was their bassist from 1986-2001 before parting ways with the band for a multitude of reasons.
Imagine riding a tank across the desert blaring these songs... 😎
I'm not sure if anyone else said it but you would be welcomed at any Metallica concert.
This was in Moscow 91. 1.6M people in the crowd.
This song is from the bible the story of Moses leading his people from Egypt. A great song to follow this one up is The Four Horsemen, of the apocalypse.
This is my favorite Metallica song!
I enjoy your appreciation sir. Keep it coming.
The 1980's was a good time for neck braces.
Master class performance!
There's Jason behind every verse that started.
Jason...oh how much he is missed.
Those were the days!
love love love freedom freedom thanku
Ex 4-string mfer Jason Newsted.
Always metal af.
The respect Polo has for Lars is interesting - a lot of us have been programmed to believe Lars is mediocre at best
I never belived that, he is one of the greatest
Because he is…
He has a lot to do with all the songs for sure and in his youth was a good drummer.
@@flenz4574 How many song have you written, drummed it yourself, sold billions of albums over decades and for always be a staple of metal for the rest of eternity?
Sit down boy
@@stonedmountainunicorn9532 as a consumer and a money spender I get to decide my preferences.. Lars is a blowhard a**hole that thinks too much of himself.
Metallica died with Cliff Burton anyway..
Dave Lombardo runs rings around him. Recognize musicianship when you hear it, don’t just follow along with the masses.
I’m going to sit down with a cold one now and listen to the true masters of speed metal… SLAYER!!!
thank you and have a blessed day
Great reaction Polo 🤘 Love your Metallica reactions bro. You rock 💪
hope all is well, love your channel!
