Metallica has such a big and loyal following because they're more than just a metal band. In tracks like this they show you the can be melodic and mellow as well as hard and fast. They've always been a band of many styles and they pull it off so well. They're more than just a metal band, they're world class musicans.

Exactly. They understood the importance of contrast. They knew when to speed up and when to slow down. This helped set them apart from the other Thrash and Metal bands at their time and even today as well. Their versatility gave the legend status and a permanent throne in Rock 'N Roll history.

I am old enough that I saw Metallica play live in 1989 for their and Justice for All (Damaged Justice) tour. I was only 13 at the time, and yes I went to a concert at 13 with no parents because that’s how my life was.
The Cult, another great band, opened for them. It was the best moment of my life at the time it happened and one of my best memories. So that particular album holds a lot of good feeling for me. I might go see them next year in minneapolis, it’s expensive now. I won the ticket to go see them in 1989 on the radio! lol
they held a call in contest where you had to be the 10th caller, answer metallica trivia correctly and you win and I won. My parents had to claim the prize for me lol because I was only 13. My parents were in their late 50s when I was a teenager and let me listen to and be anything I liked. And I will be forever grateful to them for letting me be myself and letting me go to another city to see that show.

This is such an amazing album. Their first five albums are legendary. My personal favorite album from them is Ride The Lightning but Master of Puppets is definitely a close second. The thing that makes these albums so iconic is not just the help of pioneering the thrash metal genre, the uniqueness of them using both hard/fast juxtaposed by slow/emotional, but also how each album plays like a greatest hits album despite just being a regular album because every single song is a 10/10.
This song loke quite a few other of Metallica's best songs is based off of a movie/book. This one in particular is inspired by Two Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Lyrically and sonically just hit ut out of the ballpark. The lead singer is James Hetfield. Great reaction, Pollo. Can't wait for more Metallica whenever you have the time. Fact: I have a history of major depression / sui side and many years ago I had a friend who attempted, and he was committed to a facility for several weeks as his wrists and mental health healed. One night, I got a phone call at 10pm, saying that it was collect and from my friend. He was being released, but had nowhere to go, and I said that he could crash with me, so I had 1 hour to get my place ready.
I called a bunch of our friends who came over, I bought a cake (wrote on it: "Welcome home Sanitarium" ) and had this song blasting as he came in. I'll never forget the huge smile he had on his face.
I wasn't supposed to have overnight (unregistered guests) so I snuck him in for a month until he could find work and another place to live. We're no longer in touch, but last I heard he moved out of state closer to family and was doing well.
Metallica and metal = positive mental health.

Can't believe it is going on 40 years since my ears first heard Metallica. Back then Metallica was not played on the radio or on MTV, so it wasn't until they're 3rd album, Master of Puppets, reached the record stores in the Midwest. I was a teenaged metal head still looking for music that spoke to me. Hearing the first track, Battery, blew me away. The entire album was like nothing I had ever heard before, and still rates as my favorite album all time. I went back and bought everything Metallica I could get my hands on, and have bought up everything they've put out since. Master of Puppets, in my opinion, is one of the greatest albums ever made. Tragically it was the last time we got to hear the work of Cliff Burton. James, Kirk and Lars all credit Cliff with coming up with the arrangements and melodies that make this album so iconic. The bus crashed.
Burton is classically trained and taught his hard driving hard drinking friends music theory and composition.
Going back to music school and classical training Burton (RIP) met another phenomenal guitarist who also died too young, (RIP) Randy Rhoads.
    Who played with Ozzy Ozbourne.
Interestingly Metallica's current and third bassist (recorded at lease)

Great Reaction! Anything up to “And Justice For All!” Most of us “older listeners” will like the original, old and raw Metallica. The stuff going forward is good too. There is a definitive change to the music when they put out “Enter Sandman” and “Sad But True”… still great, but different! I’d love to see a response to “And Justice For All”!

one of their greatest songs so far. Have been waiting for that one for you to react to. Nice father days present, thanks. This phase of their song writing is amazing. They play with themes, intros, outros, great powerfull solos and shifts in speed throughout their songs. This one is one of their stellar works.

Yeah for me my personal favorite is Ride The Lightning but I bet we can all agree that their first five albums are untouchable when it comes to quality.

Metallica is my favorite metal band because the music takes me on a journey. They’re the most musical metal band I’ve heard. Cliff Burton, the original bass player who died after Master of Puppets album, heavily influenced the band’s sound back then because of his knowledge of classical music. And his bass sound was just killer but all of the instruments and James Hetfield’s vocals went so well together… Sometimes I think that if Cliff was alive today, Metallica would be taking us on some more of those magical journeys. I miss that…

Cliff may not have been credited with the writing of many songs, but you can absolutely hear his influence. Anyone classically trained can hear the complex yet subtle arrangments that went into the early albums. It was classical instrumentation with a coat metal paint. After Master of puppets, and Cliff's death, that all went away and the arrangments became more mainstream "poppy" with a metal skin.

Saw them at Radio City in Anaheim in 1982. I think it was their first gig. not sure. I don't remember much of what was played, covers I think, but one song, Am I Evil, stuck in my head. My buddy and I thought they were ok, loud enough. We went because my buddy used to play tennis with Dave Mustaine, who was the guitarist at the time.
