THE NINJA SAVIORS: RETURN OF THE WARRIORS REVIEW - Happy Console Gamer

- The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors review Based on the 1994-released The Ninja Warriors: Again, which is a Super Famicom arrangement of the 1987-released arcade game The Ninja Warriors, The Ninja Warriors: Once Again is a 25-year-later remake from the Tengo Project main staff that brought you the original games. While retaining its 16-bit style, The Ninja Warriors: Once Again significantly enhances the character resolution, pattern amount, and more to match the latest hardware. In addition to two new playable characters, The Ninja Warriors: Once Again implements a two-player co-op mode that was not available in The Ninja Warriors: Again.

Kids today will never know the awe of stepping into a dark and smoky 1980s arcade and seeing the original Ninja Warriors (and Darius!) on 3 screens. Seems so quaint now when it's so relatively cheap and easy to set up 3 screens on PC at home... but at the time, oh man. Science fiction. Looking forward to grabbing the new game on Switch. The same crew did Wild Guns Reloaded a couple of years back which was phenomenal.
If they go to Japan they can
Wow your bring
I liek WG:R but something about it, I still prefer the original. The difficulty curve and balance just seem a bit better on the original. WG:R feels like an expansion that was made to challenge WG "veterans" in single player. Really had fun with the dog character tho, wish he was in the original.
I had that esperience on a x0man arcade cabin !!
Stuart Copland Check out Arcade Odyssey in Miami! I’m 37 and I know exactly what your talking about but they did it. Recreation of my childhood. They have a 3 screen X men beat em up from the 80s!
A selfish episode? NO, it was an episode full of passion and excitement, totally love this series too
Yakuza 3,4 and 5 remasters just got announced for the West btw :3
wohoo!
Are you serious ?? Thats great news !!
@@stefanjoelsson5052 Yakuza 3 is out now :3
@@necropig Pysical release after part five is out :P
BIG WHOOP
The way enemies are attacking you made me think of Rush N Attack from Konami.
I remember playing this side scrolling fighting game on the SNES at a friends house in the early 90's. I moved away and it took me years to figure out what game it was. I was so surprised it was so obscure because it was an awesome game. I was lucky to grab it on eBay in the late 90's when it was still cheap and I'll be buying this, no question.
I remember playing this game back in the arcades when I was a kid. The 3 screens and graphics blew me away. Guess I'll have to pick up the US version. BTW, your artwork is amazing!
Slight correction... the original arcade version on PSN is $7.99 not $14.99. It's part of the AC Arcade Archives collection.
Is that for ps3 or PS4?
He is correct!
@@steveothehulk PS4, it's also on Switch for the same price.
Yeah it released just a few weeks ago on Switch, $7.99!
9:16 I must admit that black magic m-66 has a very special place in me since it was the first anime not given on television that I saw there in 1991 or 1992 and I fell in love with that android and hearing you mention it made you sincerely smile with joy
Yes! Black Magic M-66 is the business!!! ( LOL..I used to rock the t-shirt back in the day!)
Looks excellent. I'm unfamiliar with it, but very interested now.
I play this a lot in SNES. Totally a hidden gem in Brazil.
Ah mano, a ost disso é maravilhoso!
@@rickedwardson5916 Mais BR na área! kkk.
Está na promoção por Us$ 9,99 na psn USA. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Mano do ceu o jogo e a ost desse jogo é ótima
I love the OST for Ninja Warriors SNEN, it reminded me of the music from the Power Ranger beat-em-up games on said platform.
i agree 100%
I heard you on the Retro Hour Podcast last week! What a great surprise to hear one of the most genuine RUclipsrs on a great podcast!
Two things Johnny. Would you recommend picking up a really good arcade stick to play this and other similar arcade ports on the Switch? And two, YES please sell that print. I want it.
I saw the original ninja warriors review just a few days ago and it was like taking a time machine. Thanks a lot for these review man.
This game is a master piece for sure.
The graphics look amazing in ninja warriors again. Great looking Super Nintendo game
Neo-Geo*
It's about to get released on Steam! I'm going to nab it asap! Black Magic is awesome, especially if you're a fan of GITS.
When ? Cause I was going to get the switch version.
@@Demonkingx5 - End of this month. 8/30, I believe.
Agreed, although my favorite Shirow work is Appleseed.
I'm sorry, were you talking about Ninja Saviors or Black Magic coming to Steam?
I just watched that Daddy Mulk live performance with your comment wanting to see it live, it was so radical!
The Switch and Psn Ninja Warriors (that you can get for around 7$~) is the faithful original 3 screen arcade version, however it does not feature the arranged, Zuntata ost that came with the Sega CD, nor the cut scenes.
I am just thankful that you have been doing RUclips for so long, you didn't change who you are and you stayed true to what you love ♥️ That is very rare my friend
I used to have the arcade cabinet bought it for 250 at an auction me and my brother put it in a video store for years configuring the screens was a pain in the butt . I did love having it for a while. Sold it to the video store owner for 700 good times.
You can buy it on the JP eshop right now and its western PS4/Switch release is like a week or two away I believe. ((Edit: It comes out 30 August in the west for both systems,))
Thank goodness western release was about to just cave in and go on playasia.
But is it Physical or Digital only? I can't find any pre-orders anywhere (gamestop, bestbuy, amazon)
Johnny I cannot believe that you didn't mention that the original SFC box art is on the flipside of the switch version. Have you even opened it ?
Man that widescreen arcade is awesome! Loved the video and also loved your interview on The Retro Hour. You and Last Gamer are by far my favorite channels. Keep on doing what are you doing, much love from Florida!!
Dude, your artwork had my jaw on the ground
OMG I remember this series! It was amazing! Definitely a throwback to my childhood.
I remember seeing an advert in a comic book sometime ago. I never played the arcade game, but to see a classic return is a treasure. And Zuntata style 🎶is always a treat. Awesome to see the new remastered adventure in action.
Please do more selfish episodes, we have the same good tastes my friend.
Its weird, from the Roy Robotech Jacket to Ninja Warriors to a bunch of other really niche interests, we seem to internal dopplegangers
Wow! Great video! Love your artwork!!! Really enjoyed listening to you talk about Ninja Warriors. I remember playing the Super Nintendo version and really enjoyed it.
Awesome video, awesome art and just super fun to listen to someone love a series as much as you! I'd definitely pick up some HappyConsoleGamer copic artwork man!
Zuntata made a lot of the Darius music too. I've played a lot of Dariusburst CS lately and the soundtrack - going through a ton of Darius history - is freaking awesome. Very avant-garde/jazzy in places.
G-Darius was the ultimate Darius game for me, personally. The new one + all that retro dlc is very impressive, especially since it got ported to the Vita.
Thanks Johnny for another great review. I'm gonna pick this up on PSN when it comes.
I love that the new characters are so weird! makes for totally different playstyles and mechanics
After all this years and you still manage to release one of my favorite episode ! I love your passion, cheers from France
Dude. You NEED to see ‘drew: the man behind the poster’ about Drew Struzman (bladerunner, Indiana Jones, Star Wars artist) you will want to draw nonstop for months afterwards. Such an amazing god damn inspiration.
The tee was from a company called Meat Bun, they are still around, I bought a Cammy tee in the style of an WW2 pin up.
Loved Ninja Warriors on SNES back in the day. Can't wait to pick up this new one!
Wow, I remember buying Black Magic M-66 back in the day. I bought it with Blood Reign Curse of the Yoma from Suncoast Video. The good old days of Anime
Those were great. I was a little kid when these were out. I was amazed my parents let me watch them.
Awesome collection Johnny. I'm stoked you shared it in this video. This is the kind of game I will get on Switch.
I saw this pop online and I wasn't sure if it was the same Ninja Warrior series you had previously mentioned in your past videos. This looks awesome! Great timing too, becuase I was in the process of tracking down a copy of the SNES game. Can't wait to try this for myself!
Dood! That piece of art was rad! I'm glad to see you drawing again!
Definite must buy no question. Ninja Warriors Again (Super Famicom version) is absolutely the best beat em up on Snes imo. Blocking, dodging, unique special attacks, grapples, it's all there, and very well designed, miles ahead of other beat em ups on the system. I gotta get this remake, and the Wild Guns remake as well.
One of the best games ever made. And the soundtrack man??? Perfect
What theeeee..!!!!! I didn’t know you were that good!!! I’d pay good money for that illustration.
I'm glad you liked it. I was worried because the game play looked so slow in the videos I saw previously.
It's nice to see your passion for the Ninja Warriors series. I only knew about the SNES version so far, and I always thought that it was an excellent game. I've played it through about 3 times. By the way, that picture you drew looked really nice. I think you've got some talent man!
Simply had to stop (in the middle of your) video and go listen to Daddy Mulk! I can't wait for this game to drop US domestic!
Can't wait for this!
Been playing the original on the Switch and having a blast, it was released on the eshop as part of the arcade archives.
Also, great art! Would love to have a print framed on my wall!
One of my favorite beat em ups ever. Thank you I will be buying this
dammit johnny I went and made a Japanese switch account just to buy this game. you see the influence you have? the game is awesome!
I had no idea one of my favorite SNES games was available on the Switch! Thanks so much for sharing!
I've heard the ninja warriors again release date is August 30th. Hope it's true because I loved ninja warriors on the SNES.
Yes it is. Already pre-ordered on Amazon.
That 3 screen arcade machine was a true sight to see back in the late 80s.
So cool they released an updated SNES game, I think I will order a copy from Play Asia.
Wow, I totally forgot about Black Magic M66. It’s been decades since I have seen it, I will have to see if I can find it online somewhere.
Thanks for another awesome video.
Man I feel like if we had grown up together we would have been best friends.
You know it!
I remembered this video. I saw this game somewhere and I bought it today. Now rewatching this video again. Loving it. Also great to have a instruction booklet in it to make the 90’s feeling complete.
great video! love the art too. do you draw shin megami tensei or persona? I would LOVE to have some SMT art from u!!
That Game looks awesome! I sure gonna pick up a physical copy.
Personally, I picked up a digital copy so that it is always on my Switch. That way, if I get bored of whatever physical game I have in the card slot, I can just start up Ninja Saviors without switching game cards.
Looking forward to itz I love the sprite animations, so well done.
When you lose your last life, do you continue exactly where you left off or does it set you back to a check point or the beginning of the level ?
The Ninja Warriors Again OST is FANTASTIC. So happy for the remaster of this game. I digitally imported immediately on release date from the Japanese PSN Store. Highly recommended! What a treat to get THIS game remastered out of them all.
Not sure if it’s mentioned in the comments but the only place I could find the physical copy was on Amazon and it releases October 15th with free shipping.
9:46,OH SHIT!! I watched Black Magic M-66. I never realized this and Ninja Warriors had the same premise. >_
I love Ninja Warriors. My first version was the Amiga. It had the arcade music and was 2 player. A pretty decent port. Love the arcade and SNES games.
Remember playing the original arcade behemoth back in the day. Fun times. Love the SNES version and actually really enjoy the soundtrack. Been playing it a lot recently in anticipation of picking up the Switch version. Can’t wait as i know it’s going to be ace.
Hey man just subscribed to your channel! Amazing content. One question though: do you think they should’ve remade the whole game with modern graphics to match Streets of Rage 4? I loved the new graphics and everything in SOR4
I know you didn't ask me but I'll give you my opinion anyway: I think The New Ninja Warriors game looks fantastic and I'm happy that they remade it with pixel art, the game retains all the esence from the SNes remake while still feeling fresh.
The only complain I have is that they should have added even more moves, still an awesome game.
Daddy Mulk LURED me into the game first time at a Jersey Shore arcade I used to hangout as a kid. Another recommendation for great arcade soundtracks is the tune from Twin Eagle. Just as intoxicating giving you goosies down your spine. Taito in the late '80's was SO ahead of the curve during that period.
Yo! Don't know if you check comments on old videos haha. You're reviews are always the best go to, you're truly a man of great taste. Just wanted to say your art kicks ass! I hope you're still doing it!
Just subscribed! That’s cool bro, I’m definitely gonna purchase it this week! I saw it on a recommendation on Amazon, and didn’t know anything about it. I’m glad I saw your video
Ninja Warriors Again is my favourite SNES game, so I am extremely happy! Can't wait!
It's on PSstore. I just purchased it. And you sir, have just gotten a new subscriber.
great video johnny and the artwork you did up was killer.
I literally watched your series video from about 9 years just the other day! Such a great game! I can't wait to get my hands on the new Switch release! Bring on all the Taito classics! Fantastic Ninja Warrior artwork, too!
@@stephanier3343 Have I had previous videos? That's news to me! Lol! I have been setting in to do some, so lets just say I hope to start putting out videos before the end of the year.
@@stephanier3343 I was just posting clips from my PS4. 😊
The arcade game was pretty awesome. I enjoyed playing it on that triple screen.
I love how this new Ninja Warriors game retains the visual style of the old games, while Streets of Rage 4 only bears the name.
It's the same game with an obese woman and a giant robot added as characters and a few new stages, though it does look great and at least this obese woman isn't as unappealing aesthetically as the one added in their Wild Guns Reloaded remaster.
Yes i do remember the Ninja warriors, it was the 2nd game made into that 3 screen format, the 1st being Darius which i loved by the way. Then Darius 2 and then Rastan Saga 3, i am not sure if there were any other games made using the 3 screens, but they were fun !
Never played this series before but I loved the setting and the phenomenal sprite work so much, I bought TWO physical copies of the game - one from Strictly Limited Games and one from Play-Asia. I know the SLG version has reversible cover but I found out about it after my order was made and the normal version sold out, so I decided I'll keep the SLG one sealed and will be playing the one I ordered from Play-Asia.
Great review, Johnny and awesome drawing!
Such a beautiful episode full of passion and happiness! Thanks a lot Happy Gamer :)
I just picked up a physical copy of Ninja Saviours for Switch online and am awaiting for it to be delivered. I honestly have not heard about Ninja Warriors as my brother and I did not have that many games for our SNES. Great video. I would not have been aware of the franchise if not for you.
Great review!
Had to pick this up! I did preorder a physical copy but it’s £10 more than download! Also panicked when I noticed the blood was green.. thought Europe had been censored lol It’s set under options/display effects colour. Proper coloured blood again!
Good episode. Just wanted a review but I did learn somethings. Thanks. Getting a digital copy now. I'll also make the ninja warriors on SoulCalibur VI.
Yo just heard the game is gonna be delayed until october for US. They said its due to Logistical challenges, so my question is thats not code for were nerfing yakshas chest is it? someone please ease my mind on this haha
I got my import a few weeks ago, very much enjoy this series, still own my SNES copy as well.
Your love for the series sold the game to me! Just got my copy on Switch :D
Hey Johnny after going back and re watching all your old pick up videos you used to talk about GameDeals all the time. Do you still go there?
LOOOL i remember thinking the name Daddy Mulk sounding so goofy when i was younger, but the actual song was pretty hype, especially for when it came out
Huge fan of this series ! Thanks for posting. I can’t wait for the US release. I agree the SNES is one of the best and most original beat em ups.
Ninja Warriors was an interesting game at its time with the triple screen. I seen people try to emulate it with Mame on 3 monitors but its not the same having the bezels in between the screens. I wonder you can do it full screen with a super ultra wide monitor? Has anyone tried it yet?
Jhonny! i love your videos!! are you going to do a full review on Xenogears one day perhaps? or maybe idk FfVII or something :D
Ninjas need a return to massive popularity like in the 80s and 90s. They're out there in love letter games like The Messenger and this, but I mean I want to see ninjas EVERYWHERE again.
Btw.. the animation on this remaster is unbelievably smooth!
i pre-ordered the switch version(collector's edition) and i have the physical version of the messenger pre-ordered(supposed to ship real soon). good stuff. =D
Nice artwork Johnny, dig the drawing! Any graphical differences between the PS4 pro enhanced version and switch? Seems like these type of pixel games don’t really have any pro enhanced differences, other than maybe faster loading times or frame rates. Figure I’d ask, since I can’t find any info online. Think Switch version might be my choice.
To quote the guard searching Neo at the metal detector: "Holy shit!"
I felt similar with Double Dragon. Finally was able to play it on C64... and holy crap was that rougher than rough... but damn it I was happy to just have anything Double Dragon that could be played at home.
This game is my jam and my cup of tea from the original which you can this on the switch e-shop and now the switch version of this snes version is a nostalgic bomb i happy with this game is on the switch
Loved Black Magic! I had it on VHS! Great movie.
I was playing the triple screen arcade of this a couple of months ago in the UK at Arcade Club in Bury, Manchester. If you're planning on coming back here for a visit I highly recommend checking it out, they also have a new Arcade Club in Leeds which is also fantastic (I was there a couple of weeks ago).
I played through the Asian version on Switch. A couple of notes: There's an option for red blood sprays from human-type enemies. Also, the original arcade soundtrack is unlockable in the game! You can jam Daddy Mulk on this version of the game in the 1st & last stage. I like this game alot.
Just picked this game up today! Great review!
I remember getting ninja warriors on the snes at a goodwill store for $1. Had no idea they made a new one.
"The new characters are a little bit weird, little bit strange"
Sounds just like Wild Guns Reloaded lol. I loved that remake though and will also be getting this one. If we don't get a standard physical release in the US I will have to head to Playasia.
I never got into the original Ninja Warriors when I was younger, probably because the machine I played was turned down and I couldn't hear the music! Had no idea the soundtrack was so good until many years later.
Great review! I'm sold on picking up the remake I love the old game. Also props for the Black Magic reference. Sometimes I think that movie was a fever dream for me glad to see it was real.
I wish i had this game back in the snes era, i loved beat 'em ups and i've always a fan of the music from this game, which actually was made by the same guy that made the music from Wild Guns, the hidden gem that i got blessed with when i got my snes on christmas back in the 90's
I always only knew the SNES game, and I LOVED it!! I loved using the boost attacks from Ninja, but my favorite was obviously Kamaitachi and his circular slicing technique!! is there a language barrier for the imported Switch game?
The Asia version that the Play Asia website has, is multi language, and my copy even started up with English as the default language.
