TRANSCRIPT:
Today we are finally getting rid of that chip in our tub. Clean the area really well so that your porcelain fix doesn't trap any dirt or grime. Next, tape off your tub chip. You can see I used painter's tape because that's what I had on-hand. You can use masking tape, just make sure to affix it really well so that your putty doesn't seep underneath the edges.
I use Milliput superfine two-part putty in white. Mix the two parts well to activate it. I wet my fingers first to keep it from sticking. Smooth it into your tub chip to fill the damaged area completely. Use a spackling knife or straight razor blade to scrape away the excess. Then, smooth it back out with your finger. Wetting your tools can help eliminate any creases or ridges in the Milliput.
Gently remove the masking tape and smooth any raised edges back down. Run your wet finger over the area until it feels flush with the rest of the tub and let it dry for a few hours.
Use wet/dry sandpaper to sand with a moistened 800 grit, and follow up with a wet 1500 grit. Sheffield porcelain touch-up paint will help it match your tub. Dry overnight and finish up with a wet 1500 grit sanding.
You'll see that ours doesn't match perfectly. We could have used Tints-All to dye the porcelain paint, but this is close enough for us.
You the BEST! Your video puts the men's videos to shame. Short, no nonsense, straight forward. The best!. Thank you so much
LOL thank you! We try to keep things straight and to the point 'round here.
It’s like magic!
Thanks! I have a couple of chips in and around a ceramic tub. Guess I'd be picking up some milliput white (I have the yellow stuff for making models and fixing things)...
Use Porc-A-Fix brand. It comes in over 800 colors to match each manufacturer.
I'm getting my bathroom remodeled and the contractor dropping the hardware for the plumbing in the BRAND NEW tub he just installed and left a chip but said nothing. Later that evening my son saw the chip and pointed it out to me. I'm now looking a way to repair it before it gets bigger because now I'm seeing rust in it and I REFUSE to let the "contractor" that came highly recommended by my 3 sisters back in my house to do anything else after he sent a subcontractor to tile the shower walls and floors. The guy left grout all over the glass border tile, didn't grout some parts of the shower, tiling on the floor not leveled, grouted the light switch to the glass border tile, etc... I can't go on but...
mikspoonks h Oh no, that is the worst! We've dealt with some terrible subcontractors, too.
I hope things are going better. I have been having my home repaired for over 30 years. It is rare that I have found any type of repair person that is good and honest.-Boy do I have stories to tell. Chipped tub, bad tree trimmers, poorly painted house numerous times, dishonest plumbers, etc. etc. I think women believe that if the person is personable/friendly they have made a new honest friend of some sort. Many women have to understand it is a business and not a social thing. I seem never to have learned.
Do I have to put the paint on over it at the end or can I just just the milliput? I don't care how it looks. I just need to fix the chips because of rust. Don't want to take a bath in it unless it is safe.
Annelise Crumb Nope, you can just use the Milliput! We were in the same boat...simply didn't want the chip to get worse.
you said you could have used...Thin salt for color match? Tin Salt?...not sure what was it at the very end, We could have used....for better color match
Tints-All :)
definitely tin salt. possibly tents-yall.
Tints-All (here's a direct affiliate link to all the different colors on Amazon - it may take a little trial and error to get yours just the right shade): amzn.to/2jKJHZl
Epoxy I purchased is bright white, bathtub not so much anymore. What color Tints-all would you suggest buying to approximate off white? Thanks!
PS How about I just throw some dirt in? :)
Technically works, but this is what I’d refer to as a bodge job!
Please upload one of your repairs because I’m guessing we will all benefit from your expertise and skill . Then after we all watch and learn from you we can do these things properly …

Thank you!! The milliput worked great and your step by step was perfect in helping me repair a quarter sized chip in my bathtub! 👍🏻😄
My bathroom porcelain sink has a dime-size hole. Could I use this product to fill and repair it?
Thanks, gonna head out to Lowes today. I accidentally dropped a toilet on our tub and my wife lost her mind when it chipped :) gonna fix it today! yaaaay!
Oh NOOOO!!! We've totally been there. Good luck with the fix, David, let us know if you have any questions at all!
I just Did the same exact thing...smh
I dropped my drill on it when trying to put up drywall on the ceiling. New tub to!
i did the same thing yesterday :/ , going to use this method to repair.
this is a funny thread... how is everyone dropping toilets on their bathtubs? And wives losing their minds haha.
Just did it, thanks! I viewed at least 10 "tub repairs" and this was the best - in under 2 minutes!
Thanks Joe, glad it was helpful for you!
don't you just hate those videos with long talk and no results.
Yea but NONE tell you how to color match
اسهل شرح اقل و ارخص طريقة تصليح ثقوب البانيو حوض الاستحمام الداخلي . جربت كثير مقاطع باللغة العربية واغلبها صعبه جدا
Thank you very much for the video! I did it exactly as you instructed and it worked out great.
Hi!! I just managed to drop a heavy jar on my bath (which I believe is acrylic) and it caused a chip on the surface - much like yours. Assume this stuff is also fine with acrylic??
Oh no! Yup, this is exactly what you need.
@@Somedayilllearn perfect. Thank you so much!!!
Wow just wow. Just wonder if I can refinish nearly the entire tub using this stuff. My tub was refinished by the previous owners who did a poor job. Now am trying to make it better but don't want to spend $$$$
I'd be interested to know how that goes! We've never tried refinishing a whole tub - if you go for it, please do let us know how it turns out.
I wouldn't bother with the paint, it looked better without, also how would tinsel help dye the paint? I thought that stuff was for Christmas decorations.
I have a shower made by Aquaglass....it is not porcelain. Would this work? It is not a big hole..just a couple of scratches that my dog gouged with his toenails.
my tub in my new apartment is CHIPPED EVERYWHERE.
I'm not sure if they will fix it or not.
is it renter friendly?
Mackenzie Haines It doesn't come off so your landlord would have to be okay with you making permanent modifications, but I personally can't imagine why they'd be mad at you fixing their tub chips!
Does it seem like it will last.
Great video. Love that it's to the point. Would this fix work okay for a cast iron clawfoot tub with a chip on the main interior (near the drain)?
What happens if some of the chips have started to rust can i still do the job and will it be safe and work?
Can this work on scrap on the tile itself ? I put “ hooks “ on the tile & when the clip came off I was stupid & used a screw driver to “ scrap “ it off and it scraped the tile!!
i live in africa i bath in the river with the hipos do i need this
is this a good repair if i plan on also reglazing my tub?
Buy bisque and white sheffield paint, mix the two together until you get the desired shade to match your tub! Great tutorial!
Thanks so much for watching - and for the tip! :)
Will this work on a plastic tub?
Do you have to glaze the Miliput afterwards?
How do you match the color and tone?
way better product than the other videos i just watched
Cast iron
Could bondo putty work as well? Thanks
Is that putty ok to fill a dent on a steel bath ?
Mercedes 2020 center console side door
Thanks I’m going to try this. Good advice.
I used milliput for a 2x2" chip, that I have painted for years, a few months ago. Can I go over the top of that fix with another coat of milliput? Thanks for video.
Yup! Just make sure to sand it down first.
Any suggestions for a cast iron tub?
Thanks! What do the Materials cost to make this fix? Total?
About $40, with the cleaning solution and putty knife. $5 more if you need to tint the touch up paint.
hi , I burnt my tub 10 cm round will this help to full the hole ?
Great video well done Lady love it, I want to do my bath I have similar issue.
Is it okay to use on the bottom of the tub? Is it water proof.
Sonya Farmer Yup, completely!
awesome thanks
Sonya Farmer aa a
thanks
How about can we use Super Glue Porcelain Chip Fix product?
I assume that would work similar to Milliput, but I haven't tried it. Here are all the products we used:
Masking tape: amzn.to/29XOU7w
White superfine two-part Milliput self-hardening putty: amzn.to/29XGltG
Razor blade or putty knife: amzn.to/29Q5MON
Wet/dry sandpaper in 800 and 1500 grit: amzn.to/29Q5jwh
Sheffield Porcelain Touch-Up Paint: amzn.to/29XRyKI
Tints-All (optional, if paint doesn't match): amzn.to/2jKJHZl
Someday I'll Learn I have a question, do we use porcelain white or white?
@@munchocrisps I used white and it was a little too bright. The color will depend on the color of your tub, and you can use Tints-All to tint it, too.
Do you know if this would work on a steel coated enamel bathtub? Thanks
Hey there! Just to be sure - you mean a steel tub coated in enamel (not enamel coated by steel, LOL, right? because I'm having a really hard time picturing the latter). YES, this will patch enamel. :)
Oh my lord, yes! That’s what I meant. Blonde moment! Awesome, thank you so so much!
@@alainad377 Hahaha trust me, I GET IT! 😜 You're so very welcome!
Very helpful; thanks for sharing!
Nice.
Good Work...Thanks!
Thanks this worked out great.
Yay! That's great to hear. Thanks for circling back to let us know.
this is awesome, thanks! what about polishing it? I want to use this technique on a small chip on the edge of my porcelain plate (hope this will still be dishwasher and microwave safe)
That wet-or-dry sandpaper in 1500 grit can get it nice and polished! Reviews for Milliput on Amazon say that this stuff has withstood lots of rounds in people's dishwashers and microwaves. If you want it to match in terms of color, definitely use Sheffield Porcelain Touch-up + Tints-All in the right shade for a final layer.
@@Somedayilllearn Thank you so much for the info! Very helpful :) I looked up the tints all, I don't quite understand, I see a bunch of color charts, are you supposed to get that and put a few drops in another product until you manage to color match? Seems like you'd have to know colors to make this happen
@@GadgetsGearCoffee Peopl use the Tints-All to dye the Sheffield Porcelain Touch-up paint and paint over the Milliput with that. It's definitely an art form. I'd try just as you said: using a few drops to eyeball the color until it's as close as possible (and painting a test drop on something, letting it dry, comparing to the original color and adjusting from there). Short of hiring a pro, that's as close as I'd be able to get! :)
Better to use resin with fiber glass then putty.
If it was a HUGE crack we'd use Bondo Resin, but for a quick fix this was a lot easier and it's stood up perfectly over the last 3 years. We've seen repairs done with that other stuff, and the mixing/cloth lay looks pretty unwieldy.
Helpful, thank you.
Glad to hear it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
blotch?
Tiging
Do i have to paint at same time as I apply the milliput? I have milliput, sheffield touch up comes next week. Want to fix chip today.
Hey there! Doesn’t have to be done at the same time - just make sure to use that wet 1500 grit sandpaper on the surface before and after painting (after all material is fully dry) to help it blend in. And if the paint doesn’t match correctly, you can get that Tints-All to help dye it the right color.
Does it dry the right colour?
You have to use Tints-All to tint it the right color.
Oh, ok.. Really surprised you didn't do this, seeing as this appears to be your showcase video on here.
We have 4 little boys and a BIG old farmhouse to work on, so this project was minor in comparison to other issues we're dealing with. We simply wanted it sealed so it wouldn't continue to chip (function over form!). For fussier people, though, Tints-All will get it the right color.
Ah, that's fair enough :) The main thing is getting it sealed so that it doesn't rust...once rust gets in it can be almost impossible to get rid of.
@@Somedayilllearn Hi I saw your video and it is very helpfull, can you kindly explain me or send me a link where to get information in how to match the color with the tub? Mine chipped pretty much the same size of yours at the video, The bathtub is brand new, just installed a week ago! Thanks in advance
Not the best finish, you should colour match the tub before painting and polish the area afterwards
Do they sell milliput in stores?
Close enough is not good enough for 99.9% homeowners. If you paid someone to do it your attitude towards the finished product would be completely different.
It's not even close.
@@jackscenic As you said...if I paid someone to do it, my attitude would be different. This is a DIY bathtub repair. Since people are "doing it themselves," they're free to adjust color to fit their needs using Tints-All. The majority of our viewers appear to be in that .1% you reference. 🤷
the chip looked better than your repair
You're comment is completely unwarranted!!! I just put a chip in my tub and this is the first video I was able to find!!!! Really grateful that someone cared enough to offer this information!!!
My comment is my opinion on how it looked after the fact. Get over it
I'll do my best..... still, take your mean spirited comments elsewhere!
No...i gotta be honest, the repair was sooo bad, even after 'mean spirited comments'. The colour wasn't even close...
God damn! She said it was not a match. Just match yours. You ppl have some serious issues.
