Thank you to the family of Leon Russell. Due to your generosity in sharing this memorial service from my home town of Tulsa, I have been able to watch the entire preceding from my present home in Hawaii. I have stories from my youth in the 70s when I was in the presence of this great man with his inestimable talent and huge heart. The "stranger in a strange land" helped me to feel less alone in that feeling of being "in it, but not of it." I light a candle and play his music to honor all the good times and his major influence on my life and countless others.
He was such a legend. The first time I saw him was at the Filmore with Mad Dogs and Englishman. Whenever he came to the NY area I would go see him in concert. Such a talent and he will be missed.
Saw Mr. Russell 3 times; New Mexico twice, Illinois once not so long ago. He had a cane, could no longer jump around the stage but those fingers could sure hit the right notes, he sang like a bird as always. What a poet. The BEST we ever had who outplayed piano better than anyone due to hillbilly style solely his own. Really miss him. Wish the family the best, must be tough on them. His daughter had dozens of dogs, bet they miss him. There was only ONE Leon. RIP
Leon Russell was a legend. His music saw me through the heart felt & not so good 70's. He was always there when I needed to here one of his songs & there was Always that one particular one that fit the bill. Will love him forever...❤️❤️❤️❤️
Taylor Hanson, I hope if you come to watch this back, that you see these words because you deserve to be praised. Your tribute to Leon was beautiful, heartfelt, and so true to his version of the song. Moved me to tears son. Well done.
Rita Coolidge said that Leon wanted kids but she wasn’t ready for that. She denied however standing wet and naked in her garden! What a gifted and authentic person Leon was. I’m pleased to see his Church studio still being used. In many ways he has become an enigma, especially after he died. He never told any stories about his home life but I did manage to find that he lived with his mother. Not much about who his father was. The biography’s show photos and interviews with people who met him after he had finished high school and moved to Hollywood. He was at a motel on Sunset blvd. Consequently HE was there when the session work was needed. He quickly established himself as pianist, arranger, writer and producer. He had an ear for what he liked on his own music but because he had been classically trained all he really needed was the score and little else. He was great at his technique and ge overcame a birth injury that left him permanently paralyzed on his right side. Consequently he struggled with his right hand piano and holding a guitar pick. He was singlemindedly determined to push himself until he literally rehabbed himself in order to play. Even though he was filled with soul he had to work twice as hard to accomplish basics of playing but he was so musical that he still managed to become one of the best if not THE best pop and rock piano player in the planet. 🤷🏼♀️🎹🎩
Leon really was the first rapper before it was a thing. Accompanied of course by his piano. His voice, percussion and his vocal eloquence. Real Tulsa blues ✌🏼
Shoot out on the plantation. As a teen I'd come home from school, turn this song on and learn the words to ALL of his songs which were complicated. finally did it, wow. Miss him. Nobody plays piano like that which is sad. I'd hoped Jack or one of the other kids would pick it up.
I already miss you a lot Leon Russell, I would like to see you still alive singing your beautiful songs and your remarkable voice, but it's not the way we want it, it's the way God wants it, and now we know that you are in a beautiful and wonderful place we know that your soul is next to the Lord Jesus Christ and may God bless your soul Leon Russell, who knows one day we will meet in paradise next to God, rest in peace Leon Russell we all have you we love.

If you want to watch the wonderful "FULL" Memorial Service that is complete with some "Hope", then watch ...LEON RUSSELL MEMORIAL SERVICE....on UTUBE from the Victory Baptist Church.
I just read the news, I'm so full of sorrow and I am crying like he was my family. Thank you Steve. Not many people really know what a precious jewel he was and his influence on music. Do you have an address where I may send a letter to one of his children? Snail mail, not social media.

Thanks for your recommendation. I just watched the TN memorial service again. It was very moving and hopeful.
Taylor Hanson did the best version of A Song For You without trying to sound or play like Leon.
And all God's children said,"AMEN!!"
Leon and John Cale were the ear candy from Oklahoma......
Peace be with you LEROY rest in Heavenly Peace
I think Leon’s faith was strong!
would love to be able to enjoy this but the audio is so distorted that it makes it too difficult
