when I was a little girl, my older brother hitch hiked home from across the U.S. Guess who picked him up and gave him a ride right to our home? Leon Russell. He sat right next to me on our picnic table, ate our meager meal and treated us like we were the ones who were super stars! I will never forget that day. He was amazed that, as a little girl, I knew all about him and the words to his songs. I was holding all my older brothers albums for him. I was introduced to all the cool bands. What a great memory!!!! What a legend and great man.
I'm an Oklahoma girl (now 57, lol) and my Mother turned me on to Leon around 1969 or 1970 when I was just 7 or 8 years old. In grade school once a week our music teacher allowed us to bring our own music. Everyone else was bringing "The Wheels on the Bus" type of music and I was bringing my Leon Russell albums. I lost my sweet Mother 3 weeks ago and of course we played Leon at her funeral. He was one of a kind and so was she. Thank you, Elton, for such sweet words in honor of "Our Leon".

A major recovery and what a good good friend Elton John is.

Thank you for sharing this story. Elton was inspired to do that. I've been inspired to call an old friend, seemingly out of nowhere, and they were in mortal crisis, like Leon. Mysterious ways, indeed.
Leon Russell was a phenomenon. I'm old and have played piano since I was a child, and I grew up in Hollywood. There was nobody like him. People really don't have a clue about the magnitude of his talent. You know, the greatest thing a musician can have on his resume is having been a member of the Wrecking Crew. You need an extreme level of talent to do that kind of work. The songs that Leon wrote and that most people know him for, are the kind of things he personally most liked to do. But his talent was far, far broader than that. He could play anything, any style, from classical, to jazz, to rock, and play it on the spot. This is why someone like Elton saw Leon as an idol, and so do I. I can't even imagine having that kind of talent. Lastly, I'll mention that the Steinway Piano Company has a program called the Steinway Artists. If you are honored by Steinway as a Steinway Artist, the Steinway Company will provide a Model D concert grand piano at every public performance you make, free of charge. Virtually all Steinway Artists are classical pianists. Only two "rock" pianists have ever been chosen as Steinway Artists: Leon Russell and Keith Emerson. Wow that was tough to watch but very uplifting . Can you believe everything he’s done it’s beyond amazing. He was as great as they come. Thank goodness he made it into the HOF before he passed so he could see how many people admired and love him and his music….RIP Leon ✌🏼✌🏼
A great composer, instrumentalist, vocal stylist and a great person. His contribution to music was immense and will never be forgotten. There will never be another like Leon Russell...may he rest in peace.
Leon Russell was great, that's all there is to it. Those of us coming to age in the 60s and 70s can see much of ourselves in Leon and his music. He reflected what we in "the community" were thinking, seeking and doing. Peace, love, brotherhood, nonviolence, kindness, sharing what little we had with our brothers and sisters and tolerance for those with a different bag. There was so much more, too. Together, we carved out a little space where we had freedom society sought to deny us. Leon was right there with us, playing our music and inspiring us. Thank you, Leon Russell. You will not be forgotten.
This wonderful artists like so many others are the only ones that caused peace in the 70s. We ended the Vietnam war because of the wonderful talent of this man as well as so many people. Music is church. Music changes the world. Thank you for your service sir 🙏♥️
A touch of class by John Mayer bowing to Leon Russell at the end of “ Singing this song for You “. I never really appreciated John until I went to a couple of Dead and Company shows and then when I saw this I was floored by his actions. A true Gentleman.
Mayer is far more talented than people give him credit as a musician and instrumentalist... he was a prodigy himself. An absolute master guitarist and songwriter when he wants to be, from ballads to powerhouse. The best thing about his work is that he doesn't take himself seriously and plays for the love of his craft. Leon was much the same; Elton, too.
I cry everytime I hear my hometown hero Leon Russell . I loved him as a teenager and I always will be that long haired guy in the bellbuttom jeans rockin out to him...... I hope he greets me at heavens gate singing "going back to Tulsa."
Respects to Elton & Leon! Elton not only acknowledged his admiration for Leon, they made an album together and went on tour! Then he helped get Leon in the R&R Hall of Fame. Amazing!!! When I was a kid, Leon was at the TOP of his game. I still have an 8TRACK tape of his greatest hits!! I can't play it, but I'll never let it go! :-)
Back in the 1970's Leon taught me a valuable lesson. I had tickets to see him play in Austin, and, "knowing" that rock concerts never start on time, I showed up late. By the time we got there, Leon had already sung three or four songs, and we had missed them. Leon taught me to get my ass in gear and show up on time. Thanks for the lesson, Mr. Russell, and thanks for a lifetime of brilliant music.
Wow love Leon and Elton. But if the incredible talent of Leon Russell doesn't evoke emotion and tear your heart out nothing can. A legendary artist, creator, composer, singer, etc. He did it all man. He left a beautiful musical legacy for us all. Thank you!
Unfortunately, few of you younger folks will understand what we had in Leon Russell, and what we will lose when he's gone. He was right in the middle of the biggest part of the birth and explosion of rock and roll. And more than anyone I can think of, he stayed true to the music and to himself. He was utterly unafraid, and unaffected by the opinions of others. Elton John did a great thing here.
I had the honor of seeing him live and it is a performance I will never forget. Signature hat, glasses, long white hair flowing and a white piano on stage...he was magic. Pure magic.
I have loved Leon for decades, I cried watching this and thanks and blessings to Elton John for "finding" this man again, I might be deaf and blind but how could Rap and Hip Hop crappers get in before this man, I ask you......?
R&RHF is a joke, unless you're actually qualified to be inducted for true merit. Everyone knows this grift now, especially after they inducted Dolly Pardon. Reminds me of those that pay money to be on the Walk of Fame, or something similar. But the amazing Leon was a musician's musician and should be inducted in a special reserved class of masters with few other equals. Build them a separate section in the R&RHF, those rare few that shine above us all with their gifts and rare and unique talents. This guy is from a different level and should be presented as such... he was far more than just an entertainer. I'm glad to see that he realized his dreams, too. Good for him! RIP
I was one of the lucky ones who got to see him and know this youth a today's time we'll never know what good music is !! Our generation had the best music and the best entertainers-- I would juct like To Thank you mr. Leon Russell for the music you played and the music you shared with us!!! It changed a lot of Our Lives! And what a loss that today's generation will not even know !! The music you had... RIP Leon Russell
Every time I play Leon Russel's music not only does it bring back the most awesome and sad non forgettable, people , His voice is one of a kind,Thank God we had all these years to enjoy his beautiful voice, music and music, He will forever live on in my heart. When my time is up, I will be listening for your golden voice. RIP.....
Just shortly before Leon passed on, he and Dr. John were performing at a theater about 2 miles down the street from where I live. I could have walked to get there if I wanted to, it's so close, but I got so busy I forgot the concert was coming up. I will probably be kicking myself for all eternity for missing that concert. R.I.P. Leon Russel. You are, and will always be, an absolute legend.
I spent many years playing bass in Tulsa, OK, and got a chance to play with guys that recorded and toured with Leon, JJ.Cale, and Eric Clapton. Those were the best years of my life. Leon was one of the main musicians that put Tulsa on the map, as home of some of the worlds greatest musicians. I respect Elton John immensely, for recognizing Leon and inducting Leon into the R&R Hall of Fame. I can't think of any more deserving than Leon for the incredible musical accomplishments spanning over 60 years. Leon is a national treasure and Elton is a saint. God bless them both! Saldos, de Buenos Aires, Argentina
Nice to hear from a TULSA musician, especialmente alguno que está viviendo en Sud América y tocó en Tulsa! To think the Leon and JJ Cale played as Sr High students at Tulsa Central HS and together put the Cain’s Ballroom and the Old Lady on Brady back on the map from the Swing days of Bob Wills. RIP JJ, Leon and more recently and sadly too soon, Steve Pryor.
Tulsatom Bob, I’ll be in Tulsa in Sept 2019 to see Jeff Beck at the Brady Theater. I wish I had more time to check out the town and the local music scene, but it’s gonna be a quick turnaround. Sure looking forward to seeing what we can of the town though.
The absolutely best of the best. Thanks Elton. Saw him at DeAnza campus Flint center. Just him playing a grand piano in his top hat and blue velvet jacket. An evening I’ll cherish always! Listening to his 🎶song for you🎶
I cried when I watched this & with each return, I haven't made it through yet with dry eyes. Some souls are a gift from the stars. Thank you, Leon. Soar high, dear one.
Leon owned the keyboards, the words, the voice. It was great that we had a chance to see and hear him for some years again before he passed. Thanks for the joy.
I’m 72 and Leon has always been a part of my life... that song that lingers on in your brain long after it has stopped playing.... That’s Leon. Thanks mate for the music and a lot of happiness.
I love Leon Russell! He sings and plays songs like no other. Also I thank Elton John for putting him on the road, when he was down. Thank you for your kinds of music. You are amazing! ❤️🌹❤️

Leon has been my absolute favorite since the70s. I've always been especially proud of him as a fellow Okie. Leon, my friend, I miss you terribly. Rest easy and be well on the other side.
I have listened to Leon since about 1969 or 70... got to see him several times in my life... I got to see him in Lawton(hometown) , Medicine Park and also in Tulsa! Best musician there will ever be, in my opinion, he is so sorely missed...RIP LEON
I am so happy that a friend of mine, Pat, who loves music as much as I do, made me listen to Leon Russell YEARS ago!! Turned out that not only is he one of the GREATEST musicians EVER, but also one of MY favorites EVER!! He absolutely deserved this, and thanks to Elton he got exactly that..made me think of Elton in a whole new way too..2 class acts!! If anyone out there doesn't like snd appreciate Leon Russell, not only do you have NO sense if anything, you have no soul! Thank you Pat for introducing me to such a great talent years ago!!
I had to reprocess my view on Elton, esp. after he entertained at the wedding of Rush, and I hear about him restoring Leon Russell - he has a compassionate soul, for sure that has no bounds, evidently
After watching videos of Leon...I can totally see why he was so popular. Watching him live is electrifying. I just watched the Mad Dogs and Englishman DVD and it took me back to a time before I was even born. Incredible. Timeless. Real music. Thank God for Elton preserving a national treasure! RIP Joe cocker
3:42 ""I feel like I have to say, if you leave this place tonight... if you don't feel like you had a religious experience...why don't you just get your money back. Because I don't need it...You hear me?" We love you Leon.
My very first concert was Mad Dogs & Englishmen at the Fillmore East. I've loved him ever since. And how great is Elton John for helping this magnificent talent. You will missed Leon & thanks for the beautiful music you left us.
I was just thinking that mad dog English man tour I wish I was around for that I love that album and I said album I love that besides that 1 the let the band's last waltz are like the 2 greatest Tours ever
I was blessed to be at the Los Angeles performance of Joe Cocker during the “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” tour, back in the 1970’s. I now live in Dullass, TX. Though I have been called everything but religious, I listen to Texas gospel music on the way to work in the morning. Often I would hear a number, and would say to myself, “Leon Russell could have produced that song”, and take a deep breath.
Leon's induction and acceptance makes my heart ache every time i watch it. What a beautiful soul. "And when my life is over I'll remember us together. We were alone and I was singing this song to you...." I never want him to not feel loved and cherished. Thanks EJ.
we'll miss Leon's music and his wide influence on other exceptional artists....forever.. Few ever played that have made such impact upon our musical listening preferences as he did for over 50 years...... we were so very blessed with him playing his songs for us...
my boy LEON RUSSELL was SO under rated. He wrote songs for everyone. but Elton called him when he was watching As The World Turns. wtf. when he was one of the most talented people in the world.
best ever, i never forget him from my early college days...Stranger In A Strange Land.......i played it until my dormies had enough...Masquerade and TightRope,,, if you dont know these songs this guy is a classic.give em a listen...lovely John Mayer...I am a fan
Leon Russell's was the first rock concert I ever went to in 1973. It was magical. I got to see him one more time during his heyday, then one last time in a tiny club a few years before he died. I sat right by the stage. He walked with a cane and wore a back brace, but his hands glided across the keys like they had over 40 years before. So glad I saw him one last time.
This whole induction for Leon was wonderful, but Song for you's outro that he repeats 3x's and climbs up in chords is something that has stayed with me since seeing this. Man O man does that touch my very soul. Beautiful Leon, Just Beautiful.
Being from Tulsa, where this legend made me a proud lover of music only legends are made of. After my roommate died. I emotionally gripped myself for a few minutes to feel grief and say the words of Song in front of a small cafe audience in his memory.
Leon Russell was the definition of class.....Elton John is the definition of class magnified many times.....Together they are what Rock n Roll is all about.....The Music, it's about the Music.....
Great induction, Elton! Thank you. Can tell you mean't every word, you look like a kid in a candy store. This is long overdue for Leon. Brilliant, talented, man!!! He was an integral part of the soundtrack of my life! Many thanks Mr. Russell, for all the joy you gave. You will be missed! (E.J- thanx for mentioning J.+D.)
During this virus time especially, seeing this, hearing this and feeling the love is helping me get through the night. I'm grateful to have been a young man during the 70's. Early on I was very inspired by Leon's music and the Shelter People. What music, what a time. I'll try to never leave it behind...so I write this to you.
I remember as a kid of 13 or 14 first hearing Leon on the radio in the early 70's. I thought to myself, "who is this guy. He sure sounds different ?" Months later I saw a picture of him with his hair, top hat, and sunglasses and thought, "well I didn't expect that." Leon doing Youngblood on Concert for Bangladesh was a highlight of the album for me. I listened to that song over and over again. Thanks for the beautiful music Leon and congratulations on your induction into the R&R HOF.
I was going to write the exact thing! He was brilliant and despite his greying hair I was struck by his beautiful face. He was such a talent and so humble!
Eloquent, gracious especially to his fans, always willing to sign an autograph, Leon Russell's induction into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was long overdue and well deserved. Hallejuah Sir Elton John, CBE for your role in getting Leon inducted. Now it's our turn Leon, to sing your tunes for you.

Wow that was tough to watch but very uplifting . Can you believe everything he’s done it’s beyond amazing. He was as great as they come. Thank goodness he made it into the HOF before he passed so he could see how many people admired and love him and his music….RIP Leon ✌🏼✌🏼
A song for you...was life for so many....Younger people "won't get it" but there are many who will. To those, we made it, and how sweet it is.
Well said 💯
A touch of class by John Mayer bowing to Leon Russell at the end of “ Singing this song for You “. I never really appreciated John until I went to a couple of Dead and Company shows and then when I saw this I was floored by his actions. A true Gentleman.
Absolutely!
And then the ballad of mad dogs and English men.
yep, same
I cried when I heard Leon's speech
Back in the 1970's Leon taught me a valuable lesson. I had tickets to see him play in Austin, and, "knowing" that rock concerts never start on time, I showed up late. By the time we got there, Leon had already sung three or four songs, and we had missed them.
Leon taught me to get my ass in gear and show up on time. Thanks for the lesson, Mr. Russell, and thanks for a lifetime of brilliant music.
I met him. Little bar in Chicago, he played the most amazing concert, and I sat right next to him the whole time. What a great talent. He’s missed.
Sadly so…. But justly rewarded
I cry everytime I hear it, but hearing him sing it in his old age is just so beautiful.
I went to the Willie 4 o July parties just to see Leon. Good stuff living in central Texas. Getting better all the time
Wow love Leon and Elton.
Elton John did a great thing here.
pocjetty you hit the nail on the head !!
I had the honor of seeing him live and it is a performance I will never forget. Signature hat, glasses, long white hair flowing and a white piano on stage...he was magic. Pure magic.
Amen pocjetty!
E . J . true self showed.
Leon was an okie
I have loved Leon for decades, I cried watching this and thanks and blessings to Elton John for "finding" this man again, I might be deaf and blind but how could Rap and Hip Hop crappers get in before this man, I ask you......?
Omggggg tears were FLOWINNNNNNGGGGG .....HOLY MOLYYYYYYY!🧡🧡🧡😁💙💙💙💙💙💙😲😲😲😂😂😂😂😂😂😎😎😎😎😎😎🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂😪😪😪
Everyone including Miss Whitney Houston was inspired by this man. It breaks my heart when people don't think she was a Rock and roller
damn me too
R&RHF is a joke, unless you're actually qualified to be inducted for true merit.
RIP
The humility of this great and gentle musician is quite moving. God Bless him and Sir Elton. Tears for me. Grateful tears.
In the 70s I was such a fan of Leon’s and to see this brought me to tears. Thank you Tony.
Such a humble his speech and comments to Elton brought tears to my eyes.
Im so sad at the loss of you Leon...you added so much to my life..you were a true Southern gentleman.
Leon is responsible for my start in the business my first tour was with him and the Gap Band love that man. Goodie
Robert Whitfield Wow!!✌👍
Every time I play Leon Russel's music not only does it bring back the most awesome and sad non forgettable, people , His voice is one of a kind,Thank God we had all these years to enjoy his beautiful voice, music and music, He will forever live on in my heart. When my time is up, I will be listening for your golden voice. RIP.....
Leon Russell.....one of the best!!! Thanks for your music. You earned those dark glasses at night. Rest easy.
I saw him in a special concert with George Harrison in Tulsa
Nice to hear from a TULSA musician, especialmente alguno que está viviendo en Sud América y tocó en Tulsa! To think the Leon and JJ Cale played as Sr High students at Tulsa Central HS and together put the Cain’s Ballroom and the Old Lady on Brady back on the map from the Swing days of Bob Wills. RIP JJ, Leon and more recently and sadly too soon, Steve Pryor.
@@patrickservat5922 There is a video, not great quality and no sound of that concert. There are some photos online too.
Including The Gap Band...
The absolutely best of the best. Thanks Elton. Saw him at DeAnza campus Flint center. Just him playing a grand piano in his top hat and blue velvet jacket. An evening I’ll cherish always! Listening to his 🎶song for you🎶
Thank you for uploading. Leon's choice of heartfelt, beautiful words of appreciation for Elton John blew me away....
I cried when I watched this & with each return, I haven't made it through yet with dry eyes. Some souls are a gift from the stars. Thank you, Leon. Soar high, dear one.
RIP Mr.Leon Russell. I always saw him a legendary artist. I'm astounded by the number of Hit records he worked on.
People and musicians like Elton and Leon should NEVER be forgotten. They are what REAL MUSIC is all about.......
Its about time he was recognized as the bright star he has been in my life and many others-Rock and Roll Hall of Fame(Halleluyah)❤❤❤So happy to be here to share this in our hearts! God Blessed You! 🌹🌹🌹
We may get older, though never forgotten, Thank God for these Musicians bringing so much pleasure into our hearts! ❤

I was so fortunate to see Leon and Elton play together!
The love of my life in the 70s. Lord Jesus what a BEAUTIFUL soul!!!!! I’m 65 now. And he is still amazing to me!!
Leon Russell wrote so many great songs....another Genius. Love you Leon..you mean so much to music. Iconic!
epiphany difference
Great
I had to reprocess my view on Elton, esp. after he entertained at the wedding of Rush, and I hear about him restoring Leon Russell - he has a compassionate soul, for sure that has no bounds, evidently
After watching videos of Leon...I can totally see why he was so popular. Watching him live is electrifying. I just watched the Mad Dogs and Englishman DVD and it took me back to a time before I was even born. Incredible. Timeless. Real music. Thank God for Elton preserving a national treasure!
RIP Joe cocker
yoymama7 I saw him in person in Pittsburgh in 1972, best show I ever saw.
That was amazing to watch Leon ...and over and over you are a great humanitarian Elton 🥰
There is NO ONE who touches my heart more... thank you my darlin' Leon~
3:42 ""I feel like I have to say, if you leave this place tonight... if you don't feel like you had a religious experience...why don't you just get your money back. Because I don't need it...You hear me?"
We love you Leon.
Loved that comment ❤️. Whenever I put my headphones on I feel like I'm in church.
What a Legend!! And thanks to Elton John for being there for Him when Leon Russell needed it most !! 👏
God Bless you Elton John for finding Leon Russell again. I was bless to see Leon sing here in Anchorage, Alaska. Sincere condolences to his family.
I have always loved Sir ELTON and SIR LEON. thank God I got to see both of them in concert in my lifetime!❤❤❤❤❤
This is so beautiful. Leon's a superstar and yet so humble. Always loved his music. Always made me feel good inside.
My very first concert was Mad Dogs & Englishmen at the Fillmore East. I've loved him ever since. And how great is Elton John for helping this magnificent talent. You will missed Leon & thanks for the beautiful music you left us.
I'm sooo jealous you got to see that show
I was just thinking that mad dog English man tour I wish I was around for that I love that album and I said album I love that besides that 1 the let the band's last waltz are like the 2 greatest Tours ever
Elton is a hero . Leon an America, treasure
We keep losing all these fantastic musicians. I’m sad about it, but they are having one almighty jam session in heaven, are they not?
Leon's induction and acceptance makes my heart ache every time i watch it. What a beautiful soul. "And when my life is over I'll remember us together. We were alone and
I was singing this song to you...." I never want him to not feel loved and cherished. Thanks EJ.
we'll miss Leon's music and his wide influence on other exceptional artists....forever.. Few ever played that have made such impact upon our musical listening preferences as he did for over 50 years...... we were so very blessed with him playing his songs for us...
People Like Leon and Elton make this planet extra special. RIP Mr. Russell.
my boy LEON RUSSELL was SO under rated. He wrote songs for everyone. but Elton called him when he was watching As The World Turns. wtf. when he was one of the most talented people in the world.
He was so sweet humble and grateful. Did not know that. Great loss.
best ever, i never forget him from my early college days...Stranger In A Strange Land.......i played it until my dormies had enough...Masquerade and TightRope,,, if you dont know these songs this guy is a classic.give em a listen...lovely John Mayer...I am a fan
What a touching induction and acceptance speech . Really one of the best I've seen. Leon is so deserving !!
Thank you Elton and thank you Leon, the two of you enriched my life.
I only met him once. It was like meeting royalty! I'm glad you were here Leon. I'm going to miss you.
My Dad had great musical taste. I grew up hearing Leon. Still love his music...never hear it without seeing my Father's face. Thanks for this.
Every musician starts out being a fan and becomes inspired to make their own music.
I watched this many times. A big Leon fan and it brings a tear to my eye everytime! Keep on trucking Leon....... you the man!
I still can't beleive you are gone Leon.. You will always be in our hearts❤❤
During this virus time especially, seeing this, hearing this and feeling the love is helping me get through the night. I'm grateful to have been a young man during the 70's. Early on I was very inspired by Leon's music and the Shelter People. What music, what a time. I'll try to never leave it behind...so I write this to you.
Still brings me to tears, and seeing Jan in the audience. Such a great talent. RIP Leon, you are so missed.
Great story. Leon was a great generous human. I worked with him for 3 yrs. I attended his funeral. Tears still fall.
Yes. I love that. I will do my part to make sure Leon's music is always heard. What a great, unique musician and songwriter.
🎼 Ufff... Wordlessly!!! I am 68 years old. From Cucuta city in Colombia 🇨🇴 South America
I am 31 years of age, and for a huge chunk of my life I did not know about Leon Russell. When I discovered him it was absolutely wonderful. I think Leon Russell is one of the best ever, and getting to enjoy this genius for the rest of my life is so awesome!!!! R.I.P Leon Russell. His first album blows me away it is so great!!!!
Leon was the best
