I first heard Leon in Vietnam. It was 1971 and it was total hell!! Then on a cassette player a friend played Leon's music and it became church an I was not alone. I can not explain it any better/this music had soul it made me Feel again!! It was/is so good☺.
My friend from Tulsa was Leon's drummer for several years & he told Leon what a huge fan I was as they were riding down the road in an old tour bus ( broke down as i recall) & Leon said call him & I'll say hello & thank him...The phone rang & it was Leon Russell thanking me ( at one of my lowest moments) for being a fan..We talked for several minutes & I told him every album I had of his..He said you left out the wedding album & I said I don't have that one but looking for a copy...Leon said don't bother he never was satisfied with that album..LOL..That was Leon..Just an honest & humble man..I lived in Mt Juliet Tn at the time of his death & attended his memorial.RIP Leon
I’m from Tulsa. First time i heard Leon Russell was in Quin non, Viet Nam, in Camp Keystone, in 1971. A soldier from Louisiana was playing a cassette. I’ve been listening to Leon Russell from then on. I believe that now and then, the cosmos opens slightly, and someone falls through ~ that’s how Leon Russell arrived on earth. Robert, Will Rogers High School, 1966.
I saw Leon play at the Stephen Talk house in Amagansett,New York. In his later years and still as awesome as ever. It was truly a privilege to see him play.
He Was The Master of Space and Time. It was Love at First Sight and Sound for me. Houston Texas 1972 and I saw Him play Anywhere and Anytime it was possible. Loved Him Then and Love Him Still and Always Will.
Just yesterday, I got up and played A Song For You, at an event in Salida, CO. I love not only that song, but I went on to say “If you don’t know much about Leon Russell, then go out, listen, and learn about what he contributed to Rock n’ Roll music. You will be a better person.”
I will never forget his concert in Fort Worth, TX, in 1973, opening for Traffic. He was dressed in his white suit & top hat playing a white grand piano. During the course of the evening Leon climbed up on top of his piano & sang while Steve Winwood played. Leon also played his guitar! I love him still. Stranger In a Strange Land is still an anthem. So proud of Tulsa honoring him. I loved going there, seeing Eric Johnson at Cain's and going to the Church Studio. Bought myself a baseball cap and my husband & son fight over it. Just ordered two more online. Love to Leon & Fans!
I'm pretty damn sure a lot of people did and so did I I still do sometimes when I hear his music certain songs get you you know it's really really magical that he can actually reach inside of a person and make them feel a certain way thank you Leon Russell rest in peace and God bless and I pray for all your family and friends left behind
Love Mr. Leon. About 53 years ago saw Leon , Claudia, Carl Radel,on bass. Not sure. Don Nix on guitar. Jim Gorden. Can’t remember all. I was 16 or so. But I remember how great the concert was and I’ll probably never see something like that again. Side note. Cher looks great. This video is great! So many great memories.
His hands are do beautiful and powerful yet delicate. Those fingers seem to touch the music and express his soul. He Tingle's my inner truest self with the glory of the span of emotion of all humanity...I don't know what I am saying but I mean every word.
I am so damn happy I got to see every single time he played in NYC especially the Fillmore East!!! I was at the Concert for BanglaDesh and that was just beyond amazing.
I wonder about his early life. Not much about his family, parents or siblings. I guess it would be apropos for Leon to be a bit of an enigma. His heart and soul were so strong it overcame so many obstacles and still managed to come out on top 🎩
I found Leon Russell on this performances. I found it in 2024 and I 83 years old. I’ve been listening to his music since I found this is something else genius❤
Makes me Misty, as I do think he was Underappreciated by the Industry...a Maverick that Should have Swept all the Awards Categories..and Lifetime Achievments...! I miss him so....just from my early teens to late...marveled at his Product..! God Bless Ya Claude....!!
Leon Russell's music helps people live and cope with everyday life if you listen to it real carefully you will understand it's great no correction he is one of the greatest that's for sure God bless and peace out
I still listen to Leon and Joe Cocker every day at least once. They were the real deal and they put their all into their songs. May they rest in God's heavenly kingdom together.

I am 68 years old. I only knew Leon Russell from afar. There was always been so much music, so many books and movies, so many places to go, that you just can't take it all in. And, because of that you miss out on so many great things. The internet is a scary place sometimes, but it allows you to go back, and catch up with things that you maybe missed out on the first time around. Right now I am finally getting around to appreciating Leon Russell for the amazing talent he was. In this case, far better later, then never.
Hi Terry I'll be 70 in a few months & i only saw Leon once as i look back there was so much good music at the time that i missed out on some of the bands i wish i would have followed more Leon is one of them. I grew up in the mountains of Arizona, where I would dance to the 3 album while my mother worked in the garden. It was the best time of my life, and I'll never forget that🤙🎸🌵hello from Phoenix Arizona. Leon Russell remains one of my very favorite music and memories.
I can't believe I just lucked up and found this tribute video of one of my most cherished and beloved and fanatically admirational musicians in my life, the Great and Absolutely Fabulous Leon Russell!!!!! I am 65 yrs old and learned to play piano in the 1970's through playing his songs, and there is no one as grand in my lifetime as Leon Russell!!!!!!!Leon, you will always be a treasure to me!!!!! I also sing and dance and performed many of Leon's songs in my career in Detroit, his writing, his playing of many instruments, his recording and producing and especially his wicked and wonderfully unique singing style and voice are all major loves in my life!!!!! Rest In Peace!!!! I shall never forget you!!!!!!!
My brother told me about, Leon, in ‘67, when I was 12.. I was playing, that music, for my friends, when Elton, was handed to us , as the new thing.. I laughed , enjoyed it, and waited. I told my high school , love of my life, that , 💨‘A song for You’, were my hearts’ strings. She heard me. Now, I’m sure. 💥 Jah-jah, guide .. my big brother..Hail , unto you, Jah🇲🇱
I was lucky enough to see him and the delta lady (Rita Coolidge)and of course Joe Cocker in the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour .The BEST concert ever. Blew me away !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He was there and all of us paid attention to his talent. No matter what song, band, or singing you Always knew it had to be Leon Russell. I didn't ever get to see him live. I am so glad I got to grow up listening to every kind of music possible. Rest in Peace Leon Russell 😢 ❤️✌️🌼👏👏🌠
"I'm going back to Tulsa one more time, I got home sweet Oklahoma on my mind" never knew it was Leon that sang it but I had heard a lot of his music. ❤ 918
A legend. I am so glad he was alive long enough to be there inducted in the rock and roll hall of Fame ! I was named Emily after the song Sweet Emily. I am 54 now.
when i heard that leon and elton were doing an album my first thought was, this has to be a tribute to leon. he had become invisible for a long time. i have a new found respect for sir elton for having the depth of spirit to make this happen. leon is one of a kind. a god among men. thank you both.
I've been a fan of Leon for decades, I've sung a lot of his songs; but never with as much style, he was a gift to the world, and a cool part of my world.
😢I, a female from.Dallas,Tx came to LA 1956. Was into Rock/Roll, fell in love with jazz. Heard Leon Russell, he was magic. Miss him... Elaine Rinaldi. Woodland Hills, Ca
I graduated HS in 1970 so I heard and lived during the time of Joni Mitchell, CSNY, Dylan, The Allman brothers, etc. Many people passed away but his death was the only one that affected me in a deep personal way, I felt that I had a connection to him, can't say why.
I became a die hard Leon fan since I was a teenager. Now in my late 60's I'm still a die hard Leon fan. Thank God I was fortunate enough to see him perform live several times across his career.
I’m from Tulsa and finally got to see him perform in Las Vegas (where I live now) about two years before he died. He was a great pianist and composer and very down to earth. One other note, I went to see the movie Papillon staring Steve Mcqueen and Dustin Hoffman, about 1973, I believe, and he was sitting with his wife Mary four rows in front of me with his cowboy hat on.
I’m also in my 60s. My story is the same as yours; I heard his voice and fell in love with the sound. I bought his record albums and loved them all, including Hank Wilson’s Back and the Wedding Album, not often mentioned. He had concerts at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa to celebrate his birthday, and I was fortunate enough to see him perform. I attended his memorial service in Tulsa, with so many musicians performing his music. It would have been perfect, but Leon wasn’t there.😭
This was great! Thank you! What a beautiful man w/a beautiful soul ♥I only just discovered him in the last couple of years - from seeing that black & white photo of a young Leon Russell at the piano (of course) w/a top hat on & his back is to the camera but the top of his body is turned so he's facing the camera...and I was like - who is that beautiful man?? I had somehow never heard of Leon Russell & from seeing that photo - I went on a journey to discover who he was. And when I see all of the people here in the comments - men who discovered him while in Viet Nam & in 1966 - the year I was born! I find it amazing & my hope is that more & more people continue to discover him & that HE knows how many people's lives he has touched & continues to touch!!! It is currently 2024.
In 1970, I was 16, my brother came home from college with Leon's first solo album...I didn't dig his voice right away, but I knew this was one cool cat...When I went away to college myself, I saw him live and I was hooked. I've seen him half a dozen times, most recently a couple of years before he passed. An incredible artist, and a uniquely talented man. Thanks for everything, Leon!
I lived in Tulsa a teen in the 70s & Leon was our hero Ill never forget seeing him play(the Assembly Cntr I think) around 75/76 it was the 1st local show he had done in like 4 years & he tore the roof off the joint...hes gotta be 1 of the most under appreciated artists of all time thank god Elton rescued him from obscurity towards the end of his life or he would've been just another forgotten genius.
Leon was a master of many genres , classical, blues, rock and roll. He knew when to follow and when to break the rules. The whole Album is easy to enjoy
All I can think to add is that I’m glad I learned how to use my Tablet cause my albums sit unplayed behind me. I LOVE the stories that come along with the music. RIP Leon..YOU ARE, will be Loved, forever. Jana mai❤❤❤
I saw Leon in Sydney back in the early 70s. Probably the tour he did after Mad Dogs. It is still one of the very best concerts I've ever been to. RIP lovely man
This man was and still is a Giant and I miss him and his music. I know that I'd seen him live at least a dozen times and was never disappointed and was always inspired. Hell, I was even jealous because my wife was in love with him and truth be known, I was too. Just imagine the jam session that's going on upstairs....God Bless Leon
A lovely, humble man. This is what a legend looks like! So glad we had Leon for as long as we did. He was a big part of the soundtrack of my life. Thank you, sir!
Some of the best times of my life was being in a Leon Russell audience. If anyone ever tells you that it's impossible to wear out a vinyl album, they're wrong.
You must’ve never heard Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding. Ha! Jk. Musical taste is subjective. You’re right though, and Leon loved Elton for it.
I only got to see Leon once, with The Shelter People tour. I still love this man. I get tears in my eyes thinking about him gone, but his Music lifts me. When Elton Brought him back, it was a tremendous thing. I miss him so much. One of a kind...
Elton looked just like a little kid seeking approval standing there in the wings you could see how much this man and his music meant to him. Bless YOUR heart Leon, forever be the Master of space and time. For those of you who of course understand those two things are the ONLY things that truly exist in this world. I think Leon was the embodiment of authenticity and love. His life was too short but he sure made the most of his musical talents. We’re all the richer for understanding.
@@islandbirdwI've always loved Elton's music, but seeing him do this lovely show of love and respect for Leon is just so moving. Thanks so much for posting this!
I was born at the perfect time to hear Leon play and sing, starting with all of those artists he did session work for, like the Beach Boys and so many others. As a teen, I took in all of the steps he went through in the 60's, like Mad Dogs, Bangladesh, and so much more. As I heard Elton's introduction at the Hall of Fame, I had tears running down my face, and when I heard Leon thanking him, I couldn't speak. After a long, too long really, broadcasting career where I got to play most of those records that had Leon on them, I finally decided to learn some piano. I was later to that party than Leon was to that session, so let me encourage all of you who are parents to get a keyboard at the very least, and set you kid in front of it so he can make use of that period of neuroplasticity and get familiar with how to make those sounds and understand their relationships. Now is the time.
I so miss the master of both space and time! Couldn't pinpoint any one thing in his career that drew me to Leon, but I've never missed a so-called Rockstar more than he... God bless you Leon... you are a friend of mine!
I've kept track of all the rock concerts I've been to (1972-2018) in my notebook from ninth grade, and Leon Russell is the guy I've seen the most! Six times!! I attended one hundred seventy four concerts SO FAR! He's my favorite piano player and his voice is one of a kind. The last show of his I went to was January 29, 2014 at the Oriental theater in Denver. I was wearing an old satin Broncos jacket. Leon started the show by yelling, "Go Broncos!" This made me feel special like I was meant to be there. He was down home good; he was great!
I love your note book. My repeat concert was Led Zeppilin for an even dozen and Pink Floyd close behind with ten. But I have seen Leon over the decades (8 x) .He lasted the longest as a show I could go to and always be uplifted. I used to attach my ticket stubs to the album that coinsided for the tour and then my entire collection was lost in a rough break up and I didn't have the heart to replace or even try. Thank God for RUclips so I can play my memory bank .I don't think there will ever be a more versatile period of music as the seventies, and it addressed our spiritual nature too making us well balanced and grounded beings. I have seen all the greats and they were more than a backing soundtrack, they were part of my life, like old friends. Till we meet again....
@@corny2103 Wow! I saw Led Zeppelin for three dollars and fifty cents at the Denver Coliseum on June 21,1972, the "Black Dog" concert (Led Zeppelin IV). Jimmy Page used a bow and played his guitar like a violin!! On September 17, 1972, I saw Pink Floyd for five bucks at Denver University; I was in the first row (it was general admission). It was the "Ummagumma" concert. My friend Donny "Pinky" Pekarek, climbed to the top of their speaker pile, and sat up there awhile! He lost his hearing for three days! We were in ninth grade! His neice, Neyla, has a rock band called the Lumineers.
Magnificent talent and tribute. Thank you. Leon literally played from his heart because I can feel it in mine every time. Pure, raw talent. Well done Sir Elton John. What you did for Leon speaks volumes to who you are as a person, may we all learn from your kindness to your fellow man and musician.
My husband was born in Tulsa in 1950 and loved Leon! I only saw him once live, unfortunately. My husband died tragically at the end of October 2016. Leon died the day of his memorial. RIP both🙏🏻
@@larrysmith6176 that is exactly it...that is what stood out in my mind an incredible rnr feel to it , so raw and explosive. judging from what i've hear the tulsa area was filled with jazz , r'n'r , rock-a-billy and blues and country, country/blues - in the 50's ie. lightin' hopkins apparently one of JJ's big influences.. it seems Leon and JJ were able to fuze those influences in their own creative way. then after developing their own sounds these two wizards came together... talk about talented - I miss the sound its like they were paying homage to the sound that came before them in a humble way but they added so much more then they or the world ever expected . Love how Clapton had that appreciation and wanted that JJ sound so bad thru his career ie Backless ...great how they finally connected with an lp in early 2000's nice chattin with you Larry happy holidays !!!
I saw Joe Cocker and Leon Russel on their Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour when they performed at the East Town Theater in Detroit early 1970. We usually went to the Grande Ballroom but we ventured out to hear to great performers with a band of 10 or 15, like the Woodstock performance. Joe Cocker died at the end of that same year of cancer.
Neal Schon of Journey started playing this intro to one of their songs in concert. It was so beautiful and soulful. Decades later something triggered the realization - it was "Song for You." I couldn't believe it. How cool. Neal put out "Voice" years later. Instrumental with him interpreting vocal tunes including that Leon Russell song. Something about him touches me so deeply. I've loved his music all of these years. Thank you Leon. 🎉 Elton, and Neal. (Anyone interested. You can hear it on Journey New Years Eve show 1977-78 @ the Cow Palace. The intro to "You're On Your Own")
I gave a pristine perfect copy of "Leon Russel and The Shelter People" Lp to Leon to autograph (circa 1995). He handed it back to me with "on the road again" re-written on the lyric sheet in ball point pen for "Mad Dogs". He said, "Where did you find this perfect copy"? I said, " It's my other copy, waiting for you to sign".
No gimmicks, just pure, raw, amazing talent. I love you Leon. Miss you to.
I first heard Leon in Vietnam. It was 1971 and it was total hell!! Then on a cassette player a friend played Leon's music and it became church an I was not alone. I can not explain it any better/this music had soul it made me Feel again!! It was/is so good☺.

Leon had more soul and talent in one finger than most musicians nowadays in their whole body.

No one is cooler than Leon, R I P
Not enough hearts for this!
😢I, a female from.Dallas,Tx came to LA 1956. Was into Rock/Roll, fell in love with jazz. Heard Leon Russell, he was magic. Miss him... Elaine Rinaldi. Woodland Hills, Ca
Beautiful ❤
I just heard of Leon Russell in Pensacola, Florida 2017. At my age of 60, my favorite song is " Lady Blue ". ❤ Rest In Peace Leon. Very talented man.
❤❤❤
great video, so much information, learning can be so gratifying, leon was so gifted
Me too!
I’m from Tulsa and finally got to see him perform in Las Vegas (where I live now) about two years before he died. He was a great pianist and composer and very down to earth. One other note,
I went to see the movie Papillon staring Steve Mcqueen and Dustin Hoffman, about 1973, I believe, and he was sitting with his wife Mary four rows in front of me with his cowboy hat on.
@Matthias Musa Nobody gives a shit.
Thank God for Leon truly a master of space and time.
Oh my! This made me cry! Leon was the best and this was a lovely tribute!
At 16 Leon was the 1st concert I ever went to (in 1973) and have been a lifelong fan ever since. Thank you Elton John.
Me as well ! My first concert in Boston in 73!
Wow terrific quality. RIP Leon
I followed Leon for years and purchased the Wedding Album and wore it out on my turntable. 68 years young and still a fan Leon.
64 years old here .It all started with will of the wisp.
Vinyl records don’t wear out . That’s a myth
Great album. Mary sings gospel now.
Me too!
Right easy.
All I can think to add is that I’m glad I learned how to use my Tablet cause my albums sit unplayed behind me. I LOVE the stories that come along with the music. RIP Leon..YOU ARE, will be Loved, forever. Jana mai❤❤❤
Leon definitely had magic going on his whole life. Beautiful. RIP
It's good to be appreciated. It's even better to know the Lord. Hallelujah.
Leon did and was in his music...!
I saw Leon in Sydney back in the early 70s. Probably the tour he did after Mad Dogs. It is still one of the very best concerts I've ever been to. RIP lovely man
God blessed Leon and blessed me to have felt his songs.
What could be more beautiful then Leon Russell? This is a PHENOMENAL video. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I agree --- it indeed is excellent and really addicting!!!
I love Leon and his wonderful music¹!
Thanks for your endorsement. Best regards, Dick Risk
😮
This man was and still is a Giant and I miss him and his music. I know that I'd seen him live at least a dozen times and was never disappointed and was always inspired. Hell, I was even jealous because my wife was in love with him and truth be known, I was too. Just imagine the jam session that's going on upstairs....God Bless Leon
That's a great tribute, william! People who move us with their music are so important. Nicely done, mate.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars
Fantastic tribute to one of the BEST. So many good memories.
A lovely, humble man. This is what a legend looks like! So glad we had Leon for as long as we did. He was a big part of the soundtrack of my life. Thank you, sir!
Thanks Leon
Some of the best times of my life was being in a Leon Russell audience. If anyone ever tells you that it's impossible to wear out a vinyl album, they're wrong.
This good man gave the kids in the 1960s the guidance that was lacking for many in those days. Such a prolific and humble master of rock and roll.
Yeah ... humility would be one of his greatest qualities.

I’m not an Elton John fan but he did a solid for Leon Russell and that is something great
agreed.
You must’ve never heard Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding. Ha! Jk. Musical taste is subjective. You’re right though, and Leon loved Elton for it.
@@melodymakermark Try "Tumble Weed Connection"
Elton John's best Lp.Far above anything that came after
There’s nothing Elton ever released that I don’t own, but thx.
There’s nothing Elton ever released that I don’t own, but thx.
That was a beautifully done tribute to a very deserving musician and fine human being. Thank You...
Now is the time.
he was handsome too.
Oh my he was a good looking man young & old!!
@@freddielind5282you bet he was!
a true legend and icon if there ever was one. the MASTER of TIME and SPACE
All hail this Master of space and time!
As of 9/11/23 ♫ A Song for You ♫ has been covered 236 times, ♫ This Masquerade ♫ 211 times.
That's so nice..🤗
I wish I had written a diary of the concerts I attended. I did keep my ticket stubs which were sadly lost along the way.
Magnificent talent and tribute. Thank you. Leon literally played from his heart because I can feel it in mine every time. Pure, raw talent. Well done Sir Elton John. What you did for Leon speaks volumes to who you are as a person, may we all learn from your kindness to your fellow man and musician.
the master of space and time he had a thing for Jesus, loved Gospel music Goat yes
"LEON RUSSELL" A WORLD MUSICAL TREASURE.
💯👍❤️
❤️
leon was something else man....everything he touched turn southern blue
. rip
Leon Russell The One And Only!!!! Will O' The Wisp album still gets to me.
34:02 says it all, how humble he is about how he got where he is. Ended it with "hallelujah"
My husband was born in Tulsa in 1950 and loved Leon! I only saw him once live, unfortunately. My husband died tragically at the end of October 2016. Leon died the day of his memorial. RIP both🙏🏻
5AM, July 4th, 1976, Willies picnic, Gonzales, TX: Leon plays Youngblood for what seemed like just me. What a moment. Thank you, Leon!
I loved when Russell played with JJ Cale . I didn't think JJ could have his music elevated but Leon Russell did just that !!! amazing artist
very well said . Leon turn'd RNR on2 Okla. & RNR is a better Bcuz of it
@@larrysmith6176 that is exactly it...that is what stood out in my mind an incredible rnr feel to it , so raw and explosive. judging from what i've hear the tulsa area was filled with jazz , r'n'r , rock-a-billy and blues and country, country/blues - in the 50's ie. lightin' hopkins apparently one of JJ's big influences.. it seems Leon and JJ were able to fuze those influences in their own creative way. then after developing their own sounds these two wizards came together... talk about talented - I miss the sound its like they were paying homage to the sound that came before them in a humble way but they added so much more then they or the world ever expected .
LEON RUSSELL AMERICAN ROYALTY
Year after year i come upon this and just sob with happiness-
Loved elton and leon since the early 70s❤what a treasure💗
Neal Schon of Journey started playing this intro to one of their songs in concert. It was so beautiful and soulful. Decades later something triggered the realization - it was "Song for You."
I couldn't believe it. How cool.
Neal put out "Voice" years later. Instrumental with him interpreting vocal tunes including that Leon Russell song.
Something about him touches me so deeply. I've loved his music all of these years.
Thank you Leon. 🎉
Elton, and Neal.
(Anyone interested. You can hear it on Journey New Years Eve show 1977-78 @ the Cow Palace. The intro to "You're On Your Own")
Beautiful Cher
I gave a pristine perfect copy of "Leon Russel and The Shelter People" Lp to Leon to autograph (circa 1995). He handed it back to me with "on the road again" re-written on the lyric sheet in ball point pen for "Mad Dogs". He said, "Where did you find this perfect copy"? I said, " It's my other copy, waiting for you to sign".
I love the oldest rock star leon russel😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
