We find that bat compression does work, at least a little bit. However, the results in our test were not overwhelming different. This might change if we tried to test a USA bat or a USSSA bat. We also might find more success using a fastpitch of softball bat.

I don't use rolled bats, but I don't think it is illegal because you're just simulating hits, and it has a similar effect to if you were using it in the game. To me, it is just speeding up the process of breaking in a bat.
Facts this does nothing for other bats besides bbcor they have a breaking in period
I am a professional bat roller. I have done it for 11 years now. It really does make a difference.
Rolling is like hitting with your bat for a long time. It just speeds up the “break in” process.
Rolling is NOT illegal it’s just breaking the bat in faster.

Maybe for BBCOR but I completely disagree with rolling non BBCOR bats because it causes them to have insane pop.

Rolling the bat is just bringing your bat up to the level of other players’ bats that have already been broken in, therefore not putting you at an advantage.
Atleast that is the argument that people make who are okay with rolling bats. We agree. But, we also think its likely illegal. I wish leagues were more clear about it being legal or illegal.
Geez, all I used to get better was an old broomstick handle and blue racquet ball or tennis ball. A couple thousand games on a one way street in Canarsie or any flat land we could find in upstate NY.
It takes much more than just rolling or shaving a bat. Now if you match good approach and proper mechanics with altering the bat, then yes, you will see an advantage.
Rolling is just an accelerated break in process. I don't roll my kids bats but I don't have a problem with it. I do so much batting practice with my boys , their bats get broken in relatively quick.

Talks about how the bat is designed to be hit on the black side not the gold, continues to video the kid not hitting on the proper side. Kid needs mad work on his swing.

Do this same Rapsodo test with the Ghost X you shaved vs normal. There, I think you'll see a considerable difference.

I'm a lil out of the loop on the new bat mechanics and what have you. I used to roll softball bats back in the days. I understand that it's illegal to do. But realistically, should it be? Rolling is mimicking hundreds of hits all over the bat. So if you say rolling is illegal, your essentially saying taking a bat out and hitting BP with it to break it in is illegal too, because they both are, mechanically, the same thing. And to the ppl that say it's illegal altering the bat, what did it change? No, its not altering the bat, everything about the bat is still the same. Shaving is altering a bat.

You can hit it 500 times or roll it same effect diff effort. Prove to me that it’s rolled and it’s not from swings. So i wash my bat after every hitting session. That’s why it’s still clean/new looking after 500 hits. Plus i square the ball up which doesn’t leave scuff marks on the bat like mishits and foul balls.
David Robinson it's the hitter that makes the difference. As a coach, I am not concerned about rolled bats. A rolled bat does not make a slap hitter dangerous. A hitter is a hitter. An out is an out. Rolled bat or not. Shaving a bat had a dramatic difference and can give a plus hitter even more pop. But even a shaved bat in the hands of an out still equals an out.

I can see where you would argue that mechanical force has been added to the bat thus making it illegal. However it's merely compressing the barrel duplicating the same force as hitting a ball. If you hit enough balls you'd have similar results. You could argue that a mild roll, and I don't even know if there is such a thing, would more evenly break in the bat improving durability.
In the end though the kid who has his bat rolled probably isn't putting in the work and it doesn't matter how hot a bat is that doesn't make clean contact.
Fair enough John. In the coming days we will test this idea that hitting balls enough is akin to rolling it. We think you are right, but have never seen anyone actually prove as much. Should be fun.
The modern bats are designed to last maybe 2 season. The composite material they are made from will cause the bat to break down the more it is used. It will become "hotter" the more hits it has on it. Rolling to to break it in faster shortens the life of the bat. Additionally, rolling puts pressure on the bat that hitting a ball doesn't and will make the walls thinner and start to crack. When hat happens, the bat is illegal.

Personally, I don’t believe rolling a bat should be considered “illegal” as most have already said, it’s simply speeding up the break in process.
When we buy new bats, I take them to a cage with a tee and hit between 200 - 300 balls before my son ever takes the first swing. I would LOVE to have a rolling machine to simply save time.

I look at bat rolling and PEDs with a very similar perspective. Not to the same degree of seriousness but why take a shortcut in the bat breaking in process. Because that's what it is, a shortcut to get to a hot bat. If you just work on your swing or your kids swing for those 200-300 swings to break in the bat there would be no reason to even consider rolling a bat because they would be that much better. It takes time to get bats hot just like it takes time to get ripped. But that's apart of the game.

Hardcore Gamer only leagues that have sanctions that no one recognizes. Most leagues prohibit any modification to a bat.
100% agree. The rule of thumb is, are you adding or subtracting anything from the bat? If the answer is no, the process should be legal. Thus, shaving bats is 100% illegal but rolling is a more efficient break in of the bat. No different than trying to take a lot of BP with a new bat prior to game use.
Ever read a rule book? Anything that changes the dynamics of a bat is illegal. I've been an umpire and tournament director for over 50 years. Guarantee that if I catch you rolling a bat, you will be disbarred from USSSA, and probably for all the other associations out there.

cowhide tightly stitched together. It shall be 5 to 5 ¼ ounces in weight and have a circumference
of 9 to 9 ¼ inches. The Coefficient of Restitution (COR) of baseballs shall not exceed .555. A
minimum of three umpire-approved baseballs shall be provided to start the game. Unless
otherwise mutually agreed upon, the home team has this responsibility. No less than two
baseballs shall be used to complete a game.

that will be used in high school competition.

one-piece rubber knob and bat grip combination is illegal.
2. Handle. The bat handle is the area of the bat that begins at, but does not include
the knob and ends where the taper begins.
3. Barrel. The barrel is the area intended for contact with the pitch. The barrel
shall be round, cylindrically symmetric and smooth. The barrel may be aluminum,

He is extremely off balance on his finish. Work with him on his fundamentals and don’t promote shortcuts. Kid already shows heart and love for the game. Don’t taint that with cheap tricks and shortcuts for minor improvements.
