- In this video I cut and fit the last hip end on the main roof.
It took a little more thinking about as the wasn't an obvious place to strike the hips from.
That is top notch craftsmanship right there. It's a damn shame that will be covered and no one will see it.
It's always the way TT😬Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
love the way you plan and explain the procedures Del.
Thanks for watching and, again, I appreciate your comment 🤩Cheers
It’s always interesting Del. I love watching these tutorials. It’s still mind bendingly complicated, that’s why I love watching you do it, make it look so easy!

John Keats is the poet you were quoting 😁
John Keats was born in London and I can't help thinking you live in or around London and the home counties.
I'm from Surrey but now live in South Yorkshire.
I like the end drone footage, it all makes sense with the birds-eye view.
Another brilliant video.
I'm up in Cambridgeshire John👍and really enjoyed English Literature at school, and fortunately am able to still recollect the odd line or two🤓Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Very clever del all made seance watching you do it . These videos should be shown in carpentry schools hands on problem solving. Thanks for giving us your time.
Its my pleasure Paul🤩and the sole purpose of me doing videos is so they can be viewed as if you were on site with me which will, hopefully, help those wanting to learn🤞Thanks for your comment and for watching😎Cheers Del

It definitely is an awesome roof. I have enjoyed watching every stage
Its great that you've watched me do the whole roof Kevin🤩Thanks for your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Fabulous job as always Del! I was wondering why they designed such a complicated roof but the aerial shot made it make a lot of sense as there would have been a lot of gable ends which would have looked ugly. As it is now it looks really nice. Complicated jobs always give you a massive boost when they are done well. Looking forward to the soffit and fascia video! 👍🏼
The drone shots do help make a bit more sense of the design Simon👍Thanks for watching, and the soffit and fascia video is coming next👊Cheers Del
Great work Del boy its a thing of beauty 👌 great idea using a gauge block for cutting the hips over the girders 👍😁
Hi Andrew🖐Its seemed a straightforward idea and worked well👊 I could have just taken the plumb cut measurement on the end common down to the top of the girder, but the girder was a bit twisted and the top wasnt quite level, so the 65mm block was more accurate👍 Thanks for watching and your comment😎Cheers Del
Wow amazing mate a true master craftsman I take my hat off to you massive amount of respect👍

I just had the "ill always find something to pull you up on" inspector from a certain structural warrant company out.
This time it was. "Cut some little wedges and put some under your diminishing trusses so they are bearing better".
Never heard that one before.
Yep, been there Obez 🙄 We had one, exactly the same as yours, who said he can always find something wrong🤔 On one job he had to get his tape measure out to measure between the gable straps as he was getting desperate to find something, and guess what, 1 strap was 2050mm from the previous one, (should be 2000mm max), and got pulled on that😵💫 To make it worse though, he then went on to lecture me on the placing of gable straps and even went to his car to get out the NHBC book to show me the reverent standard😬 Guy was a pr1ck😲 Keep smiling at em mate🤩Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter wonder if he failed getting in the police too 🤣.
@@MrBez007 He probably didn't meet the minimal physical requirements for the police as he was a snivelling little man😵
Nice one Del. It all worked out in the end despite the original problems 👍
We got there in the end Jim👊Thanks for watching😎Cheers Del
Great job Del. Made the best of a problem. Like you say the working out and problem solving can be the most interesting part. When I first started working sites in Oz I was often given all the problem jobs to work on. I didn't mind in the least. Better than frame bashing in 38C heat. Then the foreman said to me one day. You enjoy doing all the awkward bits don't you. I said yes. His reply was well that backfired. They thought they were giving me the crap none of the Aussie boys wanted. After that the term generally used was another job for the Pome.
There is such a thing as being too useful Dave😬Getting round problems is a great part of what we all do in the construction industry, and life would be pretty boring if everything went to plan😜Thanks for your comment bud😎Cheers Del
Nice job as ever Del, personally i really like tackling those kind of head scratching roof conundrums, gets the old grey matter working and always a satisfying feeling looking at the end results! I think when explaining about finding the length of the rafter when you have the given pitch you meant the equation of 1/CosPitch will giving you rafter run per metre. 👍
Hi Rob🖐I'm too lazy/stupid to know exactly how the maths works😵and just use a table I already have with the correct multiplier for each degree of pitch👍 Having said that, I am going to do a video going into this maths in more detail, and will have to polish up on my theory🤔 Thanks for your comment and for watching😎Cheers Del
Nice work mate. I’m doing a similar roof in next couple of weeks. Love cutting roofs 👍
Hi Joseph🖐Yeah, I think being up on a roof is my happy place😁Have a good one on your roof bud👊Cheers Del
Hi Del
Wow mate. I know I said it on ya last video but you are bloody good mate, I think I’ll just stick to fitting kitchen’s hanging doors and flooring. A lot less hassle mate lol lol Well done Del it looks like a work of art mate 🪚👍🍺
Hi Carl🖐I think it looked more complicated than it actually was bud, and there's definitely a lot more testing roofs out there🤯 Thanks for your comment and for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Brilliant as always mate...keep it up! would be great to also see the finished product with roofing on as something different
Hi Troy🖐I'm currently working on the lower roofs, and DEFINITELY have the drone up when it's all tiled in👊Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Superb job as always Del. I’m sure that has been a real war of attrition? 🚴👍

Very neat job. Hope in the next video you can show the detail of the valleys and where they meet the fascias on the hips.

Hi Del,
Excellent video.
Is there any chance in the future if you are doing valleys you could a a video!
Thanks
Mark
Hi Mark🖐If you mean valleys formed with valley rafters as apposed to diminishing trusses or lay boards and jack rafters, then yes, the next time I do them like that, I'll definitely film it👊Cheers Del
Great job Del ... trusses cost me more money than any other part of the job .... Give me a hand cut roof anyday
I hear and agree with you Karl👊 Sadly, trusses are cheap and that's why builders like them😬 Have a good week and thanks for watching😎Cheers Del
the labour and material costs involved with cut roofs pretty much force you to use trusses in virtually every application. I have to be honest and say its extremely rare that I ever have a problem with them.
The work I tend to do we mostly do handcut roofs .... Basic roofs trusses are ok but once we encounter anything complicated we find trusses never seem to work
@@karlkjj Same here Karl, and anything a bit more complex is always hand cut, and usually has some interesting steel work in it as well👊Cheers Del
@@stevehallam6495 Problems can be quite subjective, and some are bigger than others. Most of the issues I have with trusses could be described as minor and more irritating, and are rarely fundamental mistakes that mean work has to completely stop👍
good job
Thanks for watching Frank🤩Cheers Del
Bloody good looking job that Buddy but by gum you have had your work cut out to make it work with the state of the stuff that turned up. 🤘😎🤘👍👍
Hi Wayne🖐 I'm starting the lower roofs next week, and the hip material is the worst of the lot😩 Have a good week mate and thanks for watching😎Cheers Del
I knew you'd crack it Del. Very nice. It's annoying though that the carpenter is left with this problem. Them trusses are a joke, came from a factory with computers , and its down to you to fix their problems and no one to take responsibility for it. Their cheap I no . But look at the time it cost you and the builders, that small roof you layed on is by far better than any truss. Look how good the lines to the rest of the roof are. For example if you had hand cut the whole roof at the truss roof manufacturers degree of tolerance 🙄 you'd probably get left off.they get away with murder. I like your line from opposite roof to get the ridge in the exact position on the hip 👏👌. That truss company could do with employing you for awhile 😉. Looking forward to your next video 👍😎🇮🇪
I guess it all keeps us on our toes Paul, and we'd soon get bored if everything was perfect all the time🤔 There was probably more ways to get the height and line of the ridge, but pulling a line from the other end seemed the most simple and it worked a treat👊Thanks for watching fella😎Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter thats my down fall I like work stuff to be as good as can be. The string line from one side to the other is probably best you can eye it. Math's are great but reality is another 🤣. Love your work I'm getting on a bit for roofing but I still like to see how others do it. Never to old to learn . 🙈🤣👍🇮🇪
@@paulcloona9331 It's always a great day when we learn something new or a different way of doing something🤩
Del, You make it all look so easy but we know it isn't. With this heat and unhelpful truss company (been there) life gets hectic.

Great job Del. Seems a shame for it to be covered over
It sure does Maverick😩 Thanks for watching😎
You made a great job of what was looking like mission impossible for that roof Del 👏👏👏. When cutting the splayed cut on the hips did you measure up the from the sole plate to the girder truss to get the plumb cut mark?
Hi Kevin🖐 To get the plumb cut mark for the splayed cut, I simply plumbed up the face of the triple girder onto the side of the hip👍Cheers Del
Nooice!
Thanks Garviel🤗
That turned out very nice Del, well done mate.
Are you first and second fixing this one?

did the valley work out? I'm guessing you want a straight line from the corner of the fascia up to where the new ridge board you added begins. It's hard to see because I think the tails of the trusses are long (at 14 minutes)
Hi Tom🖐Yes, the valley worked out lovely and I didn't go into too much detail as I've already done a video on forming valleys with lays boards and jack rafters👍Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Hi Del. You sure had an uphill struggle there mate, maybe it's time to name and shame the woeful truss manufacturers if you haven't already. Save any other chippy having the same headaches!
It would be absolutely pointless to name the truss supplier as they have stated that their trusses are within their tolerances😵and most trusses companies are now different😬Thanks for watching😎Cheers Del

@@ashleydavenport3794 Bastards 🤬🤬
After watching several of your videos, it seems your truss manufacturer is the source of many of the problems you solve. The flat top girders never seem to be right. Here stateside, the girders are constructed in such a way that the I tersection of the flat top and the " rafter section of the roof are an integral hip member. Also, we have jack trusses that work to the flat top and hip trusses that work from the corner to the top chord and rafter intersection. So much easier and quicker to I stall these parts of the framing. It appears, the truss fabricator picks an arbitrary number to construct the girder instead of having it work with the roof.
Here, the first girder truss is standardized at 7'0"" for most truss systems. Jack trusses, and hip trusses, no matter the pitch are built to this 7'0" span. I believe it would make your life easier. Nice work though. MARK
Hi Mark🖐I do find it odd that many of the girder trusses seem to be poorly made, but I guess they are made to a price and are within the manufacturers tolerances😵💫It keeps me on my toes though🤓Thanks for your comment and for watching 😎 Cheers Del

Great job del as usual. Can I just pick your brains on another subject mate. I’m fitting a framed ledged and brace door which will act as a side gate. What type of butt hinge should I use for this outdoor installation? Hope you don’t mind me asking!!
Hi Paul🖐 I would use a stainless steel ball race hinge, and more importantly, make sure the door is WELL coated up with a good quality stain👊Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter you are a top man del. Cheers
I wasn’t sure if the ballbearing hinge would be suitable to the elements. Thanks again Del
@@paulyoull5472 I know what you mean Paul, but what else would fit nice on that door and stand half a chance against the elements🤔 A double washered, chrome plated brass hinge would still rust from the pin😬
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you’ve made a cracking job of that considering the start of it was sitting round twiddling thumbs for the truss manufacturer to sort their issues out! 😎👌🏻 is there a particular reason you had your timber merchant rip down the 6x2 to 35mm?
Hi Matt🖐 I kept the timber to 35mm wide for 2 reasons. Firstly, 2" thick lay boards are a bit heavy and can cause hassle when boarding out the valleys, and secondly, keeping is 35mm makes the calculations for the end common rafter the same as the run of the roof commons for cutting the rafters and setting out the end👍 Thanks for your comment and for watching😎Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter ahh yes that will make your life easier! All my local merchants only keep the 45mm timber in stock and don’t cut anything so I guess that’s all I know regarding weight etc! But also makes my life easier when putting the tile battens on as I normally end up covering the roofs in, bit more meat to nail into and join battens on!
@@mattwilkins5058 You go the extra mile covering in then Matt👊👊
