Hi all, Thanks for all your great comments. I started as a young lad working with my dad and he’s thrilled with the positive comments as well, which means a lot to me. I had a fantastic few days filming with Roger. It’s a bit out of my comfort zone but he soon put me at ease. Good banter along the way. Glad you are enjoying the film. 👍🔨🔨 Thanks again to Roger. 😉
Hi Daniel, Do you rate the trend adjustable rollers? I'd never seen them before but they could be ideal for my needs, I use 3 different chop saws depending on the type of job I'm on so a quickly adjustable support system would be a game changer.
Jon Weston sorry only just seen your message. Not used the trend ones but also change chop saws and find them very useful as you can change the height. Worth investigating!
Great tool mate I've always found the same with lifting heavy wet rafters I normally make a ply template and rod if needed. I'd definitely buy it as it looks the part aswell. At least the old boys generally had 3 x 2 rafters to lug around. Although no fall arrest systems.
I love watching Dan work and I believe he’s far more talented and far more intelligent than he realises, in fact I’d say he’s amazing. These clients should be over the moon with Dan’s craftsmanship, I’d hire him in a heartbeat. Dans maths/geometry understanding is incredible! Excellent work Dan 👍
One of the best roofing videos yet... I bet still a lot of people will be asking why is it not 45 when the saw is tipped to 45.. Takes a while to understand
Can't believe you managed to find someone as good as Robin at explaining and walking through the work process. Daniel was really nice to listen to and made the process accessible.
It is amazing just how many good tradesmen/women are out there and most of them have a passion and real desire to pass on their knowledge. Daniel learned by working with his father.
Apparently Dan has constructed at least a couple of roofs. What a craftsman. Great teacher as well. If I wasn’t nearly 70 years young, I’d sure be buying his roofing square. 👍👍
What a tradesman , when ever i watch videos like this , I always think what are we going to do when Robin, Rodger and guys like this retire ??? , That was a excellent video , and it will be helpful for generations to come.
David I would like to think that people will still be watching this in 10 years from now and I am confident that there are good guys coming along who love their crafts.

Thanks Gavin, yes I’ve been reading the comments and I’m overwhelmed by the response. My first skill builder video and it was great fun to film. I feel very lucky to be asked by Roger to do it. I’ve always said to my customers if I can help them out, I will. If they buy my square the least I can do is offer advice.
@@Ultimate-roofing-square. Well I'll be totally honest with you, I had mixed reservations mainly because I have other tools I use to do the job. Big fan of this channel and Robin Clevett in particular, but I have to say after watching this video - I now fully understand all the different cuts for a roof pitch! Might have to buy myself one of these roofing squares for my upcoming workshop build. Thanks SkillBuilder!
Ive bought this square and its easily the highest quality hand tool I own, the build quality is second to none. Also, ordering it was easy and Dan followed up and shipped immediately.

Daniel Cox Great video, you explained it very well. Just a quick question, you cut the birdsmouth to 1/3rd of the width of the timber and on some other videos i’ve seen people cut it to the width of the wall plate, is that okay? Cheers
What a fascinating video; I do hope that Daniel has protected his IP on the Ultimate Roofing Square very securely. I'm perfectly certain that he would be very disappointing to see the same product coming over to the UK from Banggood at half his selling price. As always, such interesting content from Skill Builder, thanks so much for posting.
Great video and square, the reason it’s not showing 45 degrees when you put your speed square on the top edge of the hips and jacks is because the square is not level it’s at the angle of the hip or Jack , the cut is right, the orientation of the speed square is not. Hope that helps explain .
Everyone who cried for whose sake I need to learn trigonometry at school, put the thumb up. Number 1.1033 is coincidentally a secans (1/cosinus) of 25 degrees. Nice video. Nice tool. And its metric.
I am happy to say my new Roofing square has arrived an in watching the demo I can see without using it that it will save so much time when cutting a roof In, now I'm waiting for the Long Ally Bevel to be available I like that bit of kit too.
Hi Dan your videos has helped out a lot lately, I’m a bespoke bench joiner and I have been renovating and extending a 1950s detached home , but one thing that caught my eye was a couple of mini scissor jacks with rollers that you use with your chopsaw can you tell me where you got these from, I have one of your roofing square which is great piece of kit . keep the videos coming 👍🏻
Great video and the Gentleman explained he’s square really well. I’m not sure if the square is aimed at the occasional roofer or the pro roofers. I’ve never been a fan of moving parts when it comes to roofing they tend to move when dropped. I don’t understand he’s comment on cutting a pattern rafter, this I can assure all your budding roofers is the most fail safe way of cutting any roof. Maybe being older a roofing or speed square and a roofing ready reckoned does all the roofers I know well. I’m not knocking he’s square but it just looks a bit bulky to me.
I don't think it matters how you do it so long as it works and you are happy. Daniel wanted to makes something that saved him having to place a pattern on another rafter. A lot of them are 6 x 2 and wet and you have to go to the top end and line it up then back to the bottom end and sometimes they are warped. It is true that most people do it that way but that is no reason why people should not explore alternatives.
That is a lovely tool. I know all can be done with a framing square but for ease of use and setting up; fantastic. This building may not be the best to explain because of multiple angles but it did show the reality of the squareness of buildings and the versatility of your tool. It is nice and big too, long enough for large timbers . Excellent
If I can suggest an improvement of this amazing tool? Engrave the size chart on to the long mobile side of this square. That way dont have to take care of printed paper. Thanks for the videos, I have learned few things.
Brilliant video and brilliant roofing square! When we used to cut valley rafters with the 2 cuts at the bottom, we used to set the saw on the bevel to the correct angle and the angle left or right to the correct angle and measure slight longer than the length of the rafter required and make a cut. With this way you make one cut and have a piece of timber with a bevel for each valley side with one compound bevel cut then measure up for the plum cut. This might not make sense at all but hopefully someone gets it haha.
What a fantastic video love watching skill builder and robin but I must say the way you explained the roof cuts and how you got the dimensions all of a sudden made complete sense so much so bought one of your squares last week brilliant👍
I note you are using tanalised timber for the roof construction, in my day we just used kiln dried timber, does the tanalised move much being quite a wet wood? I am building a large greenhouse and using kiln dried, and painting the timber because it is on show having glass everywhere. By the way thank you for the speedy delivery of my new roof square, I have to say it is really nice to see some solid english made engineering behind it, I can imagine it will last me and my son a lifetime. A great invention thank you.
I'm a painter by trade but always captivated by these videos of other trades especially when presented by a top craftsman, I feel like buying Daniel's roofing square for the hell of it but that would be a waste. You fellas should start a skill builder academy and start training the next generation 👍

Skill Builder us old farts get stuck in our ways I think
That is a lovely tool.
I know all can be done with a framing square but for ease of use and setting up; fantastic. This building may not be the best to explain because of multiple angles but it did show the reality of the squareness of buildings and the versatility of your tool. It is nice and big too, long enough for large timbers . Excellent
Thanks. The square was designed so it will work on a deep rafter and big birdsmouth, so covers most situations.
Liking that square mate..fully understand why u designed it.. super quick and accurate.....nice 😁
Thanks 👍
Liam Crawford anything for a easier life...
If I can suggest an improvement of this amazing tool? Engrave the size chart on to the long mobile side of this square. That way dont have to take care of printed paper. Thanks for the videos, I have learned few things.
Dan has a free app for working out rafter lengths. Dowload it from Essential Carpenter Tools, it is brilliant. No more paper to blow away.
@@SkillBuilder Thanks Roger! Top man as per usual:)
Yes that’s what I done. Two splay cuts done in one go. Then just put the plumb cut on the other end which is a square cut. 👍. Glad you like the video.
@@Ultimate-roofing-square. really good video and roof looks perfect. Top joiner 👍
What a fantastic video love watching skill builder and robin but I must say the way you explained the roof cuts and how you got the dimensions all of a sudden made complete sense so much so bought one of your squares last week brilliant👍
Steve Clements thank you, and your square will be with you very soon. 👊🏻
Love great tradesmen Lon may they continue thanks
I note you are using tanalised timber for the roof construction, in my day we just used kiln dried timber, does the tanalised move much being quite a wet wood? I am building a large greenhouse and using kiln dried, and painting the timber because it is on show having glass everywhere. By the way thank you for the speedy delivery of my new roof square, I have to say it is really nice to see some solid english made engineering behind it, I can imagine it will last me and my son a lifetime. A great invention thank you.
The tanalised timbers certainly do seem to move, and quite often it turns up curved.
Thanks for buying one, I hope it serves you well.
🙏
I'm a painter by trade but always captivated by these videos of other trades especially when presented by a top craftsman, I feel like buying Daniel's roofing square for the hell of it but that would be a waste. You fellas should start a skill builder academy and start training the next generation 👍
These days with RUclips we have the next best thing to an academy. You can learn almost anything for nothing.
Phillip Cave perhaps frame a photo of my square for your shed, then you don’t need to buy one. 😂
Very well presented many thanks!
27 minutes felt like 5 minutes of pure understanding
That’s great, thank you.
Dan.
Congrats for all these videos, you are inspirational.
Many thanks Aldo.
Very well explained great work!
Fascinating! really enjoyed watching that. Great skill.
Another great video mate and walking us threw how the roofing square works and making a scratch ur head job for me a lot simpler to understand. 👍🏻
Glad it makes it easier. 👍🏻
Brilliant very well explained and easy to follow you need to make more videos like this
Thanks. I have done another on this channel, and hopefully more to come asap..
Great video, thanks for taking the time to make and share. Really simple and clear way to understand how to set out rafters.
Love watching someone hand cut a roof. That square is pukka 👍🏻
Hand cut roofs are great to do. Thanks 👊🏻
would be nice to see robin and daniel do a roofing discussion video together.
It might happen but geography and time are the enenmies unless we do it on Zoom
A great joy to watch and learn, thank you
Really good video and demonstration - thanks for sharing 👍
Very generous of you to share this.
