How do I contact you for work purposes...business opportunity...?
Hi all,
Thanks for all your great comments. I started as a young lad working with my dad and he’s thrilled with the positive comments as well, which means a lot to me.
I had a fantastic few days filming with Roger. It’s a bit out of my comfort zone but he soon put me at ease. Good banter along the way.
Glad you are enjoying the film.
👍🔨🔨
Thanks again to Roger. 😉
What's the orange systainer with the 110 socket ? Is it just an extension lead?
Conrad Jones it is a systainer, I modified it so my transformer is in it so I can wheel it about on some jobs with my boxes on top.
Hi Daniel,
Do you rate the trend adjustable rollers? I'd never seen them before but they could be ideal for my needs, I use 3 different chop saws depending on the type of job I'm on so a quickly adjustable support system would be a game changer.
Jon Weston sorry only just seen your message. Not used the trend ones but also change chop saws and find them very useful as you can change the height. Worth investigating!
Great tool mate I've always found the same with lifting heavy wet rafters I normally make a ply template and rod if needed.
I'd definitely buy it as it looks the part aswell.
At least the old boys generally had 3 x 2 rafters to lug around.
Although no fall arrest systems.
Apparently Dan has constructed at least a couple of roofs. What a craftsman. Great teacher as well. If I wasn’t nearly 70 years young, I’d sure be buying his roofing square. 👍👍
🙏🏼
I love watching Dan work and I believe he’s far more talented and far more intelligent than he realises, in fact I’d say he’s amazing. These clients should be over the moon with Dan’s craftsmanship, I’d hire him in a heartbeat. Dans maths/geometry understanding is incredible! Excellent work Dan 👍
One of the best roofing videos yet... I bet still a lot of people will be asking why is it not 45 when the saw is tipped to 45.. Takes a while to understand
If you try to cut it with a handsaw it is tricky to do. Hats off to all those old carpenters who did this stuff without mitre saws or Skillsaws.
@@SkillBuilder yes I used to do it with a handsaw years ago.. Not now flip the circ to 45 job done
Can't believe you managed to find someone as good as Robin at explaining and walking through the work process. Daniel was really nice to listen to and made the process accessible.
It is amazing just how many good tradesmen/women are out there and most of them have a passion and real desire to pass on their knowledge. Daniel learned by working with his father.
Guy Twiss thanks. Roger did help me out when filming and made me feel at ease which helps when I’m trying to explain stuff..
Would love to spend a week with a gentleman like this learning to do a roof
I can't get enough of roofing videos for some reason :)
Love seeing craftsmen at work.
Thanks guys!
Koffi Banan I’m glad you liked our roofing video. Thanks.
Lovely to watch a proper carpenters roof been crafted.
What a tradesman , when ever i watch videos like this , I always think what are we going to do when Robin, Rodger and guys like this retire ??? , That was a excellent video , and it will be helpful for generations to come.
David
I would like to think that people will still be watching this in 10 years from now and I am confident that there are good guys coming along who love their crafts.
Great videos Dan like previous comments can’t get enough of your roofing videos myself a retired joiner of 47 years so I couldn’t help myself in purchasing your roofing square a great piece of kit keep up the great work and content🔨🪚👍
Thanks Phillip for watching and buying one!
I’m a bricklayer but I have one of these in my van. It’s an amazing piece of kit.
🙌🏻
Not sure if Daniel Cox reads this but you have a natural ability to teach. Nothing complicated just easy understanding. Well done sir
Thanks Gavin, yes I’ve been reading the comments and I’m overwhelmed by the response. My first skill builder video and it was great fun to film. I feel very lucky to be asked by Roger to do it.
I’ve always said to my customers if I can help them out, I will. If they buy my square the least I can do is offer advice.
@@Ultimate-roofing-square. Well I'll be totally honest with you, I had mixed reservations mainly because I have other tools I use to do the job. However, on reflection, I do like your square, and going forward its a lot better than the quick square I use. For the cost, I see this as money well spent compared to what else is on the market.
Gavin Collins there’s plenty of different ways to mark out a birdsmouth but I find mine reasonably quick and accurate. I didn’t want to sell a tool I wouldn’t be happy with myself , it’s made to last. Thanks for your positive comments.
He explains everything at such a good pace. Very easy to follow.
Coming up to my fiftieth year roofing make the most of it eventually it gets too hard ,I’ve enjoyed every minute of it ,time flies.
Yes I'm the same left school at 14 straight into carpentry 67 now and still doing it ,loved every minute and still enjoying it ,but yes it does get harder lol
Robin as got some competition 😂🤣 loved the scissor Jack for the timber to lay on when using the mitre saw
The square looks like it would be handy with all those different pitches. The ridge beam looks like it has a Robin-like scarf joint in it. Cool build. Relaxing video.
That scarf joint has been in use for hundreds of years and used to be taught to every carpentry apprentice but, to be honest, most of them never use it. The trussed roof has taken over on many sites.
@@robgarside8511 yes the steel ridge is taking over which allows you to shorten or do away with the ceiling collars and make a habitable roof space.
I’ve been a carpenter for thirty years and very great full and humble by Dan I’m ordering now thanks to all the tradesmen on the channel, I’m becoming a much stronger tradesman myself , massive respect ✊🏼
Thanks Danny. 👊🏻
Good to see a Superior Level getting some love
Nice tool as a carpenter for over two decades (admittedly not a roofer) I can't commend you enough you make things so easy to understand I've never really understood roofing but I've learned so much from your content can't thank you enough huge shout out from Aus 👍🇦🇺
Thanks Dave, happy roofing. 👊🏻
The man is practical and the type of geezer to pass his skill on to the next generation Some trades are A1 operatives but useless at training the young. Well done that man!
It’s good to share knowledge 👊🏻. Thanks.
Some have knowledge and cannot teach, others have no knowledge and think they can teach. Only the very best have both. This man has both, 👍 🔨 🇮🇪
From a Yank across the pond, thanks for the remark about the 88 7/8" dimension. 😉
I still work in the old fashioned inches. Sometimes it’s just easier..
👍
Daniel Cox hi Daniel where can I get those scissor jack style timber rollers from also I loved your work and I’ll be getting the square!! Thanks
Kevin Stimson sorry only just see your message, I got them from Axminster tools.
I'm all Imperial myself, I love to hear those fractions being called out, 👍😁 🔨 🇮🇪
I’ve got this square it’s brilliant met this guy at a tool show , top product and he’s a top bloke , nice to see a great product designed by a very good Chippie great video 👍👍
i loved doing roofing ,its way more enjoyable and skillful than a typical joinery that only does internal stud work and kitchen fixings
I do like a change from time to time. When I get to fit a kitchen or inside work I also enjoy that too.
Ordered Dans square today. Got to cut 70 common rafters so will be a great help! Thx Dan. 👍🏼
Thanks Jason.
I love it when a master does his thing . Looks so easy.
rory lobban I’ve had plenty of years practice.. thanks.
Rory. We are going to use that as the title, with your permission.
Skill Builder 👍
Good video thanks
Loved the ridge joining scarf beautifully executed....
Very nice to watch .
Everyone who cried for whose sake I need to learn trigonometry at school, put the thumb up. Number 1.1033 is coincidentally a secans (1/cosinus) of 25 degrees.
Nice video. Nice tool.
And its metric.
Nice bit of kit , just waiting fore mine to arrive!. . I worked with an old carpenter he used to say don’t worry you can loose a wheel barrow in a roof lol. He would of loved this as I’m sure we all do
Got the exact same square saves so much time compared to traditional methods 👍
Darren Maloney thanks, glad you like it. 👊🏻
Daniel Cox Great video, you explained it very well. Just a quick question, you cut the birdsmouth to 1/3rd of the width of the timber and on some other videos i’ve seen people cut it to the width of the wall plate, is that okay? Cheers
Matt that sounds very wrong. You will lose the strength in the rafter if you take more than a third out. Sorry only just seen your comment!
Daniel needs to be a regular on Skill Builder.
We are hoping to have him back but he is very busy. It was his first time doing something like this.
DynamitePants thanks, fingers crossed Roger may invite me back..
27 minutes felt like 5 minutes of pure understanding
That’s great, thank you.
Dan.
This guy knows what he is doing! Great video.
Bloody hell Roger - don`t let Robin see you`ve been hanging about with his competition !!!
Robin is a married man
Skill Builder 😂
Great roofing square Dan. Top job Skill Builder. Cheers from Bridgetown, Western Australia.
Small world, I’m from England but lived in Balingup for a bit.
Ciaran Stiobhard thanks. All the best down under.
Trigonometry makes these calculations super easy, I didn’t quite understand it until I’ve started studying for the engineering degree
Amazing! - What a craftsman this guy is, not to mention the amazing brain he has for geometry!!!
Andy trouble is I’m beginning to forget the maths now days....
@@Ultimate-roofing-square. alright mate quick question if the miter saw isn’t cutting the hip and jack rafters at a perfect 45 angle and it’s right if I were to use a circular saw that’s set to 45 would it be incorrect?
He is a great bloke. Him and robin should set up a training school on roofing i did shop fitting straight out of college and could use a bit of a refresher
Big fan of this channel and Robin Clevett in particular, but I have to say after watching this video - I now fully understand all the different cuts for a roof pitch! Might have to buy myself one of these roofing squares for my upcoming workshop build. Thanks SkillBuilder!
Thanks Thomas, I’m glad you liked it. Roger has a great channel and followers.
Thanks for posting this critical information, it's treasure for self builders
Good to see you are showing more amazing builders . A breath of fresh air with this lad.
Ian Gough thanks for the comment, from the lad... 😳
Great video guys, nice to see some traditional roofing, and someone who knows what he’s talking about.I own this roofing square and can say what a great tool, for this kind of work. Thumbs up!!!!!
Karl Moore thanks for the comment, glad your square is serving you well. 👍
I think I could learn to do roofs if I could work with this guy, great teacher.Im 55 been window fitting since I left school.
Brilliant video. One of skill builders finest. In great depth and with a master craftsman. Thanks Roger and Dan
Thank you Tim. We are always keen to try new things and new people on Skill Builder.
Thanks Tim.
Proper master roofer
Jeez I enjoyed that one , another brilliant tradesman , completely baffled me though! Bricklaying is so much simpler 🤔😂🧱👍🏼
You only say that because you’re a bricklayer! Most definitely not a trade to be sniffed at especially at your caliber!
just bought one of your square, its fantastic, makes things very easy.
Thanks John.
So much skill and expertise! Wow. Smart guy
David K thank you.
Ive bought this square and its easily the highest quality hand tool I own, the build quality is second to none. Also, ordering it was easy and Dan followed up and shipped immediately.
Many thanks Patrick.
Happy roofing!
That multiplier is the secant, I would really enjoy a video showing how and where he develops his cutlist and planning. Good craftsman there. I love seeing the work overseas, compared to ours here in the states.
It's a pleasure to watch someone with so much knowledge and skill working at something they clearly love - great stuff!
Thanks Matthew.
I bought your square, what a nice solid tool, Thanks for the quality product.
Thanks for buying one. 🙏🏼
It is the best and easiest roofing square I have ever used perfect every time,, great idea best money I've spent on roofing gear
Thanks Philip, glad you like it.
Great video went over the subject enough different times and ways that you could then understand it... really good job
Philup
We took the decision to include the repetition to improve the acquasition.
Skill Builder A wise decision, I found it was explained at a nice pace, great video guys, well done.
That's what I love about carpentry. Whether you an apprentice or an experienced chippie, you never stop learning.
Very true. Usually the chippy ends up getting over other trades problems so most days it’s a learning curve. Thanks
Awesome. This guy is the true bomb. He's got those numbers and angles down like NOW/
That battery nailer is the stuff, I like not dragging the air hose around. That special roofing square jig is totally awesome.
That ridge slotted in "like a finger up a bum" as we say. I've always enjoyed doing roofs more than any other aspect of carpentry. Loving the superior level and roofing square!
Great job lads 👍🏻
Love watching someone hand cut a roof. That square is pukka 👍🏻
Hand cut roofs are great to do. Thanks 👊🏻
Being a chippi myself I really appreciate the content Dan would love to keep learning from you as I wasn’t trained in the roofing side... Top work 👍
Thanks Darren for the message, and I’m pleased if your learning while watching. 👍🏻Hopefully more videos to come soon.
I want to like this video twice. Very nicely filmed as well. I'm going to get one of these squares for my father!
Koffi Banan thanks, 👍👍. It was great fun to film .
Love great tradesmen Lon may they continue thanks
Thanks daniel. I'm just getting into carpentry after 25 years as a plumber believe it or not. \i work for a local builder and enjoy doing a bit of everything now. Cutting rafters still makes my brain hurt but I love a challenge. i will be buying one of your squares next pay day. Cheers mate and thanks for the video.
Thanks for the comments, few roofs and you will love cutting rafters.. 👍🏻
I really miss cutting roofs, it's all truss roofs here in Australia. Great video.
Congrats for all these videos, you are inspirational.
Many thanks Aldo.
Great bit of kit, yes there are other squares etc. and a plethora of methods, but in my opinion this is a way of simplifying the cut roof. Hats off to you sir, well demonstrated and your experience shines through. I will be getting myself one of these and I'll let you doubters know how it performs. 👍
Thanks for your positive comments. 😉
How did it work out?!!
I've Gott one and it's Brillant Tool, Love IT!
Thanksalot from Germany 👍😀
🙌. Thanks Rees.
Great video guys. And a good project to demonstrate all the fiddly bits
Great video! I love these roofing videos. I'm learning roofing atm and love topping up my Brain with all this info! Fanks!!!
Liking that square mate..fully understand why u designed it.. super quick and accurate.....nice 😁
Thanks 👍
Liam Crawford anything for a easier life...
Just used the square on my last roof, Best square I’ve ever used and really solid! Would really recommend!
Thanks Shaun, happy roofing!
It's a great tool, last week I built a hipped roof and this was the tool I used to make my life really easy.
This tool makes even the most complicated roof relatively easy.
Great video.
@skillbuilder and @daniel cox this is hands down the best traditional roofing tutorial/explanation video on RUclips. None of the others even come anywhere close, also Daniel I think that your roofing square is excellent and the pitch&multiplication chart just tops off a great product. I don't really need one for myself but I shall be ordering one for my apprentice and teach him how to construct traditional roofs with it. Your top guys-from a fellow carpenter.
Thank you , much appreciated.
A true craftsman, respect to you, I'll be ordering a square shortly, very informative video, thanks Dan.
Thanks wotnoturbo, much appreciated.
would be nice to see robin and daniel do a roofing discussion video together.
It might happen but geography and time are the enenmies unless we do it on Zoom
Great bit of kit, very well explained be adding one to the tool collection 👍🏻
Fascinating! really enjoyed watching that. Great skill.
This is a great video, but the square is just fantastic, my boss bought one about a year ago and I’ve got one now . We do all of of work from foundations to the finished build , we do some complicated roofs on our builds and this little tool is worth it’s weight in gold !
Many thanks Steve for the positive comments.
Glad you enjoyed the video.
Awesome video Guy’s, Hi Dan you are a truly awesome craftsman, the first time I’d seen you review your square on RUclips I thought what a awesome invention, I will be using mine for the first time in the next few months, loved they way you jumped to imperial. You deserve all the luck and the success on your square all the best Tony 👍
Build With A&E thanks Tony. Keep me informed when you use it. 👊🏻
Great video, thanks for taking the time to make and share. Really simple and clear way to understand how to set out rafters.
Very well explained great work!
Great video and the Gentleman explained he’s square really well.
I’m not sure if the square is aimed at the occasional roofer or the pro roofers. I’ve never been a fan of moving parts when it comes to roofing they tend to move when dropped.
I don’t understand he’s comment on cutting a pattern rafter, this I can assure all your budding roofers is the most fail safe way of cutting any roof.
Maybe being older a roofing or speed square and a roofing ready reckoned does all the roofers I know well.
I’m not knocking he’s square but it just looks a bit bulky to me.
I don't think it matters how you do it so long as it works and you are happy. Daniel wanted to makes something that saved him having to place a pattern on another rafter. A lot of them are 6 x 2 and wet and you have to go to the top end and line it up then back to the bottom end and sometimes they are warped. It is true that most people do it that way but that is no reason why people should not explore alternatives.
Skill Builder us old farts get stuck in our ways I think
Your explanations are so clear. Learned so much. Thanks
He could have been a teacher or a preacher.
Hi Daniel and Roger. Great video I been a Carpenter in Cornwall for over 20 years, I also own a timber frame company, all our roofs are cut. Great tool have just purchased one this will speed up the construction process. Great work thanks Dan
Dan OnSiteFraming thanks, glad you liked the video.
What a fantastic video love watching skill builder and robin but I must say the way you explained the roof cuts and how you got the dimensions all of a sudden made complete sense so much so bought one of your squares last week brilliant👍
Steve Clements thank you, and your square will be with you very soon. 👊🏻
Exceptional video mate. Thanks for sharing
A.S no problem, it was such great fun for me to do, though I’m not used to being filmed.
A great joy to watch and learn, thank you
Great video and square, the reason it’s not showing 45 degrees when you put your speed square on the top edge of the hips and jacks is because the square is not level it’s at the angle of the hip or Jack , the cut is right, the orientation of the speed square is not. Hope that helps explain .
It is a compound mitre.
Talent and a great tool
Many thanks.
What a fascinating video; I do hope that Daniel has protected his IP on the Ultimate Roofing Square very securely. I'm perfectly certain that he would be very disappointing to see the same product coming over to the UK from Banggood at half his selling price. As always, such interesting content from Skill Builder, thanks so much for posting.
What a craftsman! A real treat to watch him work👍🏼
aljotock thank you. 👍
Relly chuffed I've subscribed & Dan you're the Man :)
Christian Fraude 😮. Thanks.
I am happy to say my new Roofing square has arrived an in watching the demo I can see without using it that it will save so much time when cutting a roof In, now I'm waiting for the Long Ally Bevel to be available I like that bit of kit too.
Thanks John.
Some joiner great explanation and finish also roofing square a beast🏴
Thanks David, 🙏
This is very nice, good job there.
Excellent quality information very well presented by an expert craftsman. I've watched this video 3 or 4 times...
Thanks, wow you must like it (3-4 times). 👍🏻
Yes Yes Yes perfect video. now thats how showing of a product should be done. By teaching. Perfect Rodger, well done mate
julez timms thanks I really enjoyed it , great fun and you can see how I pitch roofs. I’m very grateful Roger filmed it.
I love roofwork, would love to work with this guy for a week.
yes he is also good fun to work with.
