Awesome looking space man! Ya can't go wrong with magnets for hanging the sound panels and the pegboard, we use magnets ALL the time for suspending stuff in our studio!
A lot of support and a lot of flak in the comments here. So leaving this here in hopes it finds you on a tough day. I started drawing skills and tips from your videos a long long time ago. What I didn't know at the time is that above all else, what I was drawing was motivation. Was on my ass broke not too long ago..today am finally up on my feet. I've a master's degree in film and actually have a shot at the life I had only dreamt of until then. And I can safely say that what I learnt from you in terms of color correction and shooting for it, is the reason I now have a job. Well, just managed to impress someone big and have been offered a spot on his crew as second ac. Thanks man. You done good. Keep at it

Thank you Gerald for being my teacher and inspiration for making more RUclips content. I've learnt so much from your videos that I've pivoted my business post COVID lockdowns (Australia) from face-to-face teaching to 100% online delivery. Your tech reviews have helped me select the right gear (BMPCC4k and 6k Pro), lighting (Apurture and Godox), audio (Rode NTG3) and building my studio (looks a lot like yours I'm afraid). So once again... you're a great technical teacher and presenter of superbly produced content. I wake each morning here in Australia and check on my phone if you've posted anything new. Keep it up!
You inspired me so much to start my RUclips channel (from Portugal) You can’t even imagine, and I know with so many subs you don’t really care about my comment or so, but... just to say this. You’re truly great. And thank you! Just... THANK YOU. Nice new space, really nice.
@@geraldundone wow! Gerald. Appreciate that you take your time. That really shows how humble and great you are. It means a lot, believe me. That new cozy studio is really nice, once again. Let’s the game begin 💪🏻
Looking good G! You did a fine job doing the vlog things 🙌🏼 love the orange and purple lights and how that’s become such a recognizable part of your brand.
Hi, music production student moving to London soon! Audio is a huuuge rabbit hole. There are two approaches you can follow: first reflections (RFZ) and overall treatment. First reflections (RFZ) Where the mic is, take a mirror and move it along the walls. Any place that you can see the mic in the reflection of the mirror from where you are sitting is a reflection point, treat those first (This includes walls, ceilings, floors). This involves the least amount of treatment, however you may still hear a bit of echo in a room of that size. Overall treatment Follows the equation that you need to cover 20-30% of the volume surface area of the room with treatment to make a meaningful difference in the reflection tail (also called RT60). If the room is like 16'x14' w/ 9 ft ceilings thats 988 feet of total area. You would need to cover 30% of that to make it sound significantly different. So 24-37 2x4 panels, giving you 20-30% of coverage at 8sq ft. each. Positioning-wise you need evenly spaced treatment prioritizing parallel walls (as in, two untreated walls facing each other, just treat one side not both), which includes floor and ceiling. Rugs or curtains can also count. This helps shorten the room echo. My recommendation For cost effective short term buy 3 thick acoustic curtains off amazon and hang them on stands behind the camera (at least 6ft height), and on both sides of you just out of frame, and just put them up for recording. Possibly add a rug underneath the desk. Add more panels as you can acquire/make them. Longer term, its always a trade off in trying to make a large room sound dry, there is so much surface area and if you succeeded it would sound eerily dead to just hang out in. Even in high-end professionally built studio live rooms they often have more ambience than you would think. When a dry pop vocal is needed, they often set up a mic in the middle of the live room and build a 'blanket cove' behind the singer, or move in additional panels to form a semi-circle of treatment behind them. Mics On mics, a shotgun condenser is great because it has a very narrow pickup pattern, however it is also still very sensitive to picking up room ambience. Try to aim it towards an area of the room you could potentially treat while still having it face you. You also may want to try using a dynamic mic instead, such as an MD441, RE20, or SM7. These still have great detail but will pick up less of what's behind you and the room in general. Just keep them as close as physically possible to yourself without being in frame, even an extra inch or two can make a difference. Hope it helps
Blakely Studio very much appreciates your attention to detail, and your organization. We've been focused on sound for the beginnings of our adventures - but we're just now exploring video editing. Thanks to your reviews, and information we're able to make much better decisions. So far everything we've made is of low quality, just practicing for the higher quality gear we're about to pick up. We appreciate your sharing information with us, and are stoked to see your new space.
Gerald your exactly right. It’s take me over 6 months to assemble my studio. My vision has been quite challenging. I’m looking forward to entertaining the RUclips viewer again. After a 12 years extended vacation.
Great video, like the new space. Great to see such good quality closed captioning as well. Sometimes it is good to have them on for me. Look forward to the next one.
I second this! Gerald is so meticulous, organized and controlled which is why his content is incredibly consistent. However, I like the sneak peek of the unscripted/ uncontrolled Gerald not sure what to do or where to angle the camera 😂🤍
Its not the space that makes the creator... but the creator makes the space. thank you for making space for all of us out here who appreciate the work, efforts and time.
I watched this video without any skips and to be honest Gerald, even though the acoustic wasn’t as treated as your previous studio space, its definitely good enough to my ears. Been following you since the early days. I don’t know if other people had diff opinion but its definitely doable for some videos for the moment. Just fix it up whenever you can like you always do. Cheers from Malaysia 🇲🇾
One thought, those wrenches on the back wall have a glare on them that imo distracts and is a bit harsh right next to your face. I Love the bi-colored background light thought! btw i've gotten a lot of tips and inspiration from your videos for my own channel! Especially the mic reviews, helped me choose my oktava !
A matte clear coat is a possible solution worth considering if you like the industrial look of raw steel (like I do) but you also want to reduce the reflections. Another option could be to have your tools sand blasted, but that seems a little overkill to me, even though it would be pretty cool
Love the ramble! The deep dive into your mind as you talk in real time allows us to see into your process. Most of us have to do the same thing and it is nice to see that.
Look who's talking here, the COOL himself! Really admire you Ali. Love your real, authentic & high value content. And your success on RUclips is truly inspirational. More Love to you ❤️
I felt your sadness at the beginning, it’s always emotional, even when you are moving to bigger and better. Best of luck for the future, I will carry on watching and enjoy your work.
You could use some sound blankets on some rolling c-stands so you can have less room noise, but still be able to roll them out of your way for when you need a different angle and shot
As a hearing impaired person, I really do appreciate these video captions on all of your videos - they are immensely helpful! Not many video creators have them on their videos, so it's sometimes a bit hard to follow what they say. Thank you Gerald.
The blue box to the left stole my attention a bit and maybe the whole background could be a little bit more out of focus to avoid being distracting while still telling the little story of Gerald 🤓 Over all, nice place you've got going there!
Good luck with everything! Big move. To a new beginning! I like the side colors (orange/purple) but not a big fan of the reflection on your face. My 2¢
Honestly. the awkwardness over the vlogging is refreshing to see from someone who's normally so polished. The space is awesome, and I'm using your sound panel design (no magnets lol) for my own space.
Incredible work! The setup looks great, and it seems like you’ve got a lot more space to work with! And hey- no more purple gradient compression issues.
Realtor: "So, as you can see, all the rooms have huge windows and lots of lovely daylight flooding in!" - Gerald: "Does the ceiling support heavy, pitch black, light blocking curtains?"
This video caused me to appreciate you even more, because it showed another side of you: one where you’re maybe a bit out of your element, figuring things out organically with us getting to see the unfinished “product” as it unfolds, versus the neat, polished, controlled videos. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy those succinct, yet detailed, knowledge sharing summations. But this was refreshing and makes you even more relatable. Oh and CONGRATULATIONS on your growth! 👊🏽
Right on with the busier shot. Definitely supplemented the banding from YT compression. Also love the throwback vibe to the old set. Loved the video and look forward to more Studio Undones! Cheers!
PSA: The purple edge light is harsh, yes. And that's exactly the point of an edge (to seperate the background from the subject) This isn't Roger Deakin's No Country for Old Men with all naturalistic lighting; Gerald likes his colours, so let him use it. Stop complaining, you'll get used the colours. After all, how can we watch a Gerald "Purple" Undone video without any purple lights?
You could just hang some sound blankets on C Stands left and right of the camera/ desk to catch some early reflections. It doesn't sound bad, but you can hear it is a bigger space for sure.
Thank you for being so humble at the end. I'm having a lot of anxiety about setting up "the perfect youtube studio" for a client. Comforting to know even Gerald Undone is going to take some time to get it all just right. I appreciate all the tips man! 🤘
This was a fascinating and nerdy as hell 24 minutes and I'm glad I watched it. Thanks for showing us a bit of your behind-the-scenes and especially your problem solving when it came to dailing in a new space exactly how you want it. I always enjoy hearing more experienced people talk about what issues they encountered when trying to set up a studio space and how they solved those. Thanks Gerald.
So pleased to hear you say you don’t blog, that way some of the people who do vlog will get the message you’re supposed to look at the viewer/ lens . Cheers !
I could feel your emotion in your breathing and distance between words-I think you got emotional maybe holding back some tears bruh... congrats to you 🙏
You made it sound super easy to setup your lights (key, fill, back spill, intensity, colour temp balance etc) and colour grade to get the skin tones looking good at the new studio. If you ever feel like making a short video on it, I feel like this is a topic that a lot of new or aspiring RUclips creators could benefit from
That hallway and closet area from camera's right, that could use some treatment, a movable soft wall to defuse echoes, which could expand to cover part of the kitchen/bar. Even just making temporary sound panels to see where 2 or 3 panels would be best placed. (these movable ones hung from tripods.)
This is great. I enjoyed seeing your space. The sound is good as-is, but I can see things sounding better and tighter once you add the sofa and area rug.
Nice! My studio build starts in 2 weeks when we’re in our new place which I have 36 square meters of dedicated space (about 400 square feet) Looking forward to this same journey
Kitchen is a nice addition to start a second cooking channel - “Gerald Welldone!” Studio is setup great and sounds good. the added space is gunna be a welcome change for you!
Congrats to the new studio! I guess when you say echo you mean the room reverberation? The panels definitely helped, and personaly, I like the minimal room sound I still hear on your voice (on my Genelecs). I would not get crazy about it, it sounds pro. SEcondly, as you said, when you have rugs and couch in that will also help dampen the room a tad more. Sure, you can record your audio super dry, but then you would reverb in post. And this is not necessary from what I am hearing.
Congrats on the new spot, Gerald. Setup suits you perfectly.
Congratulations man!!! Looks great. So excited for you!
Awesome looking space man! Ya can't go wrong with magnets for hanging the sound panels and the pegboard, we use magnets ALL the time for suspending stuff in our studio!
