  • In honor of Frank's 83rd birthday.... we are going to do 2 songs for this special Frank Friday. I hope you enjoy as we honor this special mans life... his music!
    And damn, this was so different yet so Zappa. Very lyric heavy and tightly focused. He really is a genre of his own...

    If you’d like to donate to the channel or just show your appreciation, all the details are below. All donations and tips that come from you, go into my daughters college fund and a fund for channel equipment. I created this channel for her so she has videos of her father talking and doing something he enjoys(listening to music and talking about it) since I don’t have any of those of my father. I decided that all funds that might come from this will go to her as well :) thank you again for your generosity guys, I appreciate yo all more then you will ever know.
    Your name will be added to the Thank you supporters’ video that plays at the end of every video and you get to pick a video for me to react to. Thank you so much!! If you donate and pick a song, I will get to it in under 72 HOURS

    Frank was a Musical Savant and a Sigma Male of the highest order. Genius Is kind of an insult when trying to quantify or explain him. He is truly an Enigma, and a Paradox at the same time. There will never be another like him, and i feel honored to have shared the same space and time of his existence. Thank you Frank, The world is a better place because of you. RIP, Maestro...

    L33: I can listen to him do anything. The entertainment factor is insane on this one. I also loved the Bob Dylan impression. He really commands the listener's attention, even through sneering, jeering and spearing the things he finds wrong or amusing in our culture. As for him being a genre unto himself, just you WAIT till you hear the music on Jazz From Hell. I can't wait (but I will!).

      @@L33ReactsI always felt that this song was Frank's way of bashing not so much corporate America but the work ethic of Americans in the 1980s!! Americans went from quality over quantity to preferring quantity over quality because you can make more money that way!! So the Flakes are basically the working people that just do not have any pride in their work the way they had back in the 50s and 60s!! And of course he give several examples during the song in the lyrics but basically it's like the old saying "they don't build them like they used to"!! Now whether or not this song stems from a personal experience that Frank had with some sort of contractor or repair person is unknown to me, but he did hit the nail on the head!!!

      @@L33Reactsalso since you are going to do a Zappa reaction every Friday why not go back to the very beginning to either "Freak Out" or "Absolutely Free" and pick a song every couple of weeks off of those so you can see where his Roots began!!?

    Lots of great tunes on this one, especially the Live song portions. You did a version of City-Tiny lights, but the live version on this album is the one we all know, and well worth listening to again. "Yo MAMA" at the end is a truly incredible piece. "Jewish Princess" is a bit naughty but is balanced out with "Catholic Girls" from "Joe's Garage Act 1" Called "Conceptual-Continuity", which is Frank Zappa Mantra. Most of his thoughts jump form one album to another.

    When he sings, "I'm a moron and this is my wife, she's frosting a cake with a paper knife." He's referring to an ad that was running back then about a canned cake frosting that was supposedly so soft and creamy that the lady in the commercial was able to frost a cake with a cardboard knife. I remember that commercial. Only Frank could find a way to put that in a song. 😂

    I guess you could call this Frank's "pop" album. He certainly flirted with commerciality on Over-Nite Sensation and Apostrophe,
    but I think he went even further here. Hell, he even had a number 1 in Norway with "Bobby Brown" from this album!
    If it wasn't for the naughty lyrics which SO upset the more sensitive members of society, I think he might've achieved quite a bit of
    radio play with this stuff.....but it was not to be.
    Not unless you count "Dancin' Fool" which proved somewhat popular. Probably because Frank was largely making fun of himself.
    HE was the dancing fool. And there was a lot of disco hate around at the time, so there were plenty of people who liked anything
    that made fun of it.
    It was only when Frank made fun of others that it started to hurt a little too much. Which meant that Frank was never going to achieve
    mainstream success, because he didn't give a shit about hurting other people's feelings. He was more concerned with telling the truth
    the way he saw it.
    Man, he'd have so much fun with cancel culture!

    • @L33Reacts
      @L33Reacts  6 месяцев назад +1

      Dude you are not kidding.. imagine if him and Carlin were still alive. They would have an absolute BALL with our sensitive ass greedy lazy culture. I hate it with every fiber of my being. My own generation makes me cringe and I hate it. We could be SO much more... so much more.

    • @SpaceCattttt
      @SpaceCattttt 6 месяцев назад

      @@L33Reacts Yes! George Carlin is my other idol! I had the same epiphany when I discovered Carlin as I did when I found Zappa. After growing up a weird kid and constantly being told that I had to be on drugs to think like I did, here, suddenly, were two gentlemen who thought and spoke like me. Only MUCH better, of course.
      How often do religious people get to listen to God speaking to them directly?
      You don't have to believe in anything if the speaker is right there in front of you!
      But I digress. Both Zappa and Carlin had similar lives in the sense that they started out doing relatively gentle satire, only to grow increasingly cynical and angry with age. And if they were around today, they'd tear cancel culture a new asshole.
      And they'd succeed, too!

      @@SpaceCattttt "Cancel culture" is just "political correctness" renamed (at least how it is used by the right wing's adoption of these, which is to get to be victims about there repercussions about some of the things they say), but anyway this isn't even that new -- both Zappa and Carlin were regularly making comments in their time about the social limitations of what was okay to say or not.
      I always like to ask: what specifically is it that you feel like it is really important to say, but you can't, because of "cancel culture"?

      @@hackbod The extreme difference is that today, little brats with smartphones have a direct impact on our societies.
      They can affect the economy and hack elections, not to mention destroy the careers and families of anyone they decide they don't like.
      This is a new phenomenon. Little bully brats never had this power in the past.

    I'd love to recommend other songs from this album, but I'm hesitating because most of them have lyrics that in today's woke world would be frowned upon. For example Bobby Brown Goes Down, Jones Crusher, I Have Been in You, Jewish Princess and of course Yo' Mama. Take your pick, but be warned the lyrics of most of these are very near the knuckle, or for Yo' Mama maybe hispanophobic.
