    The Dylan impersonation was done by Adrian Belew. "I went home with Frank, and he was showing me an upcoming song called "Flakes." Now, a little known fact about Frank is that he really couldn't play and sing at the same time. One of the reasons he hired me, he told me, was because he liked the fact that I sang and played together so well. On a lot of the music, I would double what Frank was doing. I'd double his vocals for him exactly, or I'd be doubling his guitar parts so he could be free to do either one. When he played "Flakes" for me, he also had to sing it. It was kind of unusual. It sounded so bad it sounded like him doing a Bob Dylan impression to me. It sounded like a folk song, which it was anything but. So jokingly I started singing along with it in a Bob Dylan imitation, and he said, "That's it, that's in the show, you're gonna be doing that." - Adrian Belew

    The Dylan impersonation cracks me up every time. Especially the harmonica playing! ;-))

      It is dead on. I love Dylan, but this cracks me up every time.

      Yes, so funny! The harmonica brings tears of laughter in my eyes. Combines Dylan's evangelistic attitude with a banal plumber issue, genius. I guess serios Dylan would never have joined Zappa because lack of humor... (Btw. I really like a lot of Dylan's stuff.)

    The lyrics in the Dylan section are so well done. I could believe Dylan write the lines about senses reeling, through the ceiling, etc.

    Only Frank could make one song sound like a four song medley. With sound effects and humorous lyrics.

      Much as I love this song, and not to take anything away from it, there are plenty of precedents for the "single song that sounds like a medley" model, even in pop songs.
      E.g.
      Keith West - "Excerpts From A Teenage Opera";
      The Beatles - "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Happiness Is A Warm Gun", "Golden Slumbers";
      10cc - "I'm Mandy, Fly Me", "Rubber Bullets";
      Paul McCartney - "Band On The Run", "Little Lamb Dragonfly", "Rock Show";
      Queen - "Bohemian Rhapsody";
      Genesis; "Supper's Ready", "Firth of Fifth", "One For The Vine"
      and lots of other great prog records of the early seventies.
      I've always been a big fan of that style of composition where you have no idea what's coming next as opposed to the rather formulaic AABAB form.
      "Flakes" is a classic example.

    Re Dylan, 4 years after this came out Dylan turned up at Zappa's houes asking if Zappa could produce his next album, the album did not happen but Dylan played Zappa his new songs on the piano and the whole session was recorded but the tape has never been heard.

      @Hakan Tuna Müzik - Actually the album did happen, just not with Frank producing it. Dylan and Mark Knopfler produced the album, and it was called Infidels and released in 1983.

      @@HakanTunaMuzik - Frank wanted Bob to just sing and use his Synclavier for the music. Bob didn't like that idea. It turned out to be a great album. I wish Frank would have done it.

      @@Frunobulax74 That's not the way it was, Zappa said for Bob to sub contract Giorgio Moroder and have him do sythn backing and for Bob to sing on top of that, but Bob didnt like that idea, nothing to do with the synclaiver.

    It’s Adrian Belew who came up with Dylan’s voice during a rehearsal. FZ found it funny and there you go.

    From "I'm a moron and this is my wife" onwards, the backing track was instrumental with an Adrian Belew guitar solo.
    During the extensive overdub sessions Zappa wrote the lyrics.
    Similar thing with the older song Muffin Man.
    Sheik Yerbouti is basically a live album withlots of overdubs with some studio chatter and a studio creation (Rubber ashirt) thrown in.

    It goes right into the next track called I'm So Cute (which was actually an "over the top" sound check that drummer Terry Bozzio sings.) It's epic and you should check it out too. At the end you'll hear Terry Bozzio ask Frank "Did you just record that?"

    I love the fact that when Adrian Belew does a hilarious parody of The Maestro, even Dylan fans aren't sure whether or not it actually is His Bobness!

    Absolutely true! California's like a bowl of cereal, the ones that aren't fruits or nuts are flakes! My apologies to you couple hundred normal Californicators. On the inside cover of Frank's first album Freak out is a list of one hundred and seventy-nine names of people that were influences on Frank, Bob Dylan is one of those names. Frosting the cake with a paper knife is a reference to an old cake frosting TV commercial where the frosting was so creamy and smooth that you could spread it with a paper knife.

    The problem here is that this is a part of a suite that is best heard in full and this is part 2 of the whole suite which is the whole of Side One of Sheik Yerbouti.
    Side 1.
