  • Ingredients
1 1/2 sticks of salted butter
2 oz of unsweetened chocolate (8 squares)
    1 cup of whole milk
    2 cups of sugar
    2 tsp of vanilla
In a heavy bottomed saucepan, heat all ingredients except the vanilla on medium heat. Bring to a low boil and allow mixture to boil for at least 3 minutes stirring constantly.
Remove saucepan from heat. Allow frosting to come up to room temperature to thicken, stirring occasionally. Once frosting has cooled, add vanilla and stir until blended.

This frosting looks delicious, can't wait to try it. Would 2 percent milk work instead?

I’m not sure if I would use 2%. It might not thicken like it should. You need that richness. Canned milk works great in this recipe.

OMG! Love this! My mom made chocolate frosting the same way. Always around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. She gone but I always make this frosting to put on a yellow cake. Brings back lots of memories for my brother's and sister's at holiday gatherings. Nice to see someone else makes it too.

I love homemade chocolate icing. When I was first married I made the cooked icing. I don't know why I quit cooking my icing. I think my next chocolate cake will have this icing.

Can I use powdered sugar instead of granulated sugar?

Yes you can. But, you'll have to find out what the ratio would be. It's great both ways
