  • I really love this icing, but you do have to work with it. Thanks for watching, and please feel free to share my videos. Here are the ingredients and directions.
    1/2 cup of butter or solid vegetable shortening
    2/3 cup whole milk
    2 cups sugar
    1/4 cup cocoa powder
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    In a sauce pan, mix everything except the vanilla and bring to a rapid boil, stirring constantly. Once it comes to a rapid boil, boil for two minutes. Remove from the heat and add your vanilla.
    Pour into a large bowl and beat with your mixer anywhere from 5-15 minutes. Sometimes mine is ready at seven minutes, other times it might take longer. You really have to work with it. When ready, you can frost a cooled pound cake. I hope you enjoy!

    Been making this for many years. I use small can of cream instead of milk and Boil 3 min. Yes it is a crazy icing. Weather makes it work up different. Only kind of icing my mother ever made for chocolate.

      @@mistydutton6016 Thank you so much! I was thinking that because I think that it would make the frosting have an even richer and smoother taste! I think that by using evaporated milk it will also help the frosting to thicken a lot faster compared to using carton or gallon milk!

    Your beef tips in the pressure cooker came up in my suggestions. Your name is what drew me to your video. In 2012, our family suffered the loss of the youngest of us eight children. My sister, who we called Cricket, died in a drowning accident at the age of 48. I am number seven of the eight, with a tee between us, so we were always close. I miss her every day, today, watching your beef tips video made me think of how, though you don't have this problem, she could only cook a few things. What came to mind today was when she put a dinner roll in the microwave fir five minute and caught it in fire 😆We were by her devastated as any family would be, by her loss, but fun memories like microwave fires help out quite a bit. I am going to subscribe and keep watching videos. Thanks for some funny memories today. ✌️❤️✌️

      I am so sorry for your loss! I'm happy to know that there was another Cricket. I am a twin. Your story reminds me of what my sister did. She put some dinner rolls that were in the paper pan that they were bought in, and put the whole thing in the oven, and it caught on fire. LOL! She still gets joked about that. Again, I am so sorry. I know you miss her terribly! You will be in my prayers.

    Just a tip. I've made this fudge since I was a little girl, over 65 years ago. To shorten the beating process, I set my pot, in a bowl of ice water and beat it with mixer and only takes less than 5 minutes. I'm too lazy to mess up another bowl by pouring it into one. Also, the way to tell when it's just about ready, is that it becomes lighter in color. I'm afraid I often over cook so that it makes fudge. That's how my dad liked it but I like this way for the 10 layer cake. Thanks so much for good memories.

      I'm right there with you, around 45 years +\- and there have been times I could almost drink it and other times when the fudge would be perfect. I couldn't agree more about just knowing when that color changes, that the moment is approaching.

    Would it be okay to use half butter flavored shortening with the butter? Also, do you think that by adding heavy whipping cream would make the frosting too thick?

      I don’t think I would use either because this is an old recipe and it’s like making real fudge except you don’t cook it as long and you whip it. That’s just me and my opinion.

    I have used a metal bowl of ice water, under the frosting bowl,
    to cool similar ones with success. Like your recipe, thanks.:-}

    Does the frosting get a little crunchy after it cools? My husbands granny used to make him a cake with boiled chocolate frosting that would crack and be a little crunchy after it cooled. I have tried making “granny’s “ frosting ever since we got married (50 years ago) and it has never turned out right. I’m willing to try another recipe if yours has this consistency. Thanks!

      It really depends on the weather. It’s best to make on a dry day. Sometimes it can get a crack to it.

    Does it ever get grainey? Sometimes my icing is grainy. This looks wonderful.

    Probably didn't reach the soft boil when cooking so that made whipping take longer.

    Hi thank you for posting. What kind of sugar: granulated or confectioners?

    • @cricket516
      @cricket516  6 лет назад

      I used granulated. This icing can be very tricky to work with and you really have to work with it, but the end results are the best. If you try it, I hope you love it and it turns out great. If you have any questions, please let me know.
