Boondocking Water Fill Tips - AquaTank Bladder, Water Bandit and Flow Meter

- In this video, a few tips and tricks for bringing water to and filling the RV tank at our boondocking campsite. I demo myself filling my Aquatank water bladder at a State Park water spigot that doesn't have any threads for the hose. for that, I use a rubber connection device called a Water Bandit. So that I know when I have added 30 gallons to my bladder, I use an inline water meter.
Back at the campsite, I use a 12V RV water pump to draw the water out of the bladder and push it through a 3 stage water filtration system attached to my trailer's bumper.

I bought the 30 gallon bladder tank way back when you got yours. Excellent tank, it rides on the back of my truck carrier when I know I’m going Boondocking, no tears or leaks. In fact I just purchased the 60 gallon size, which now gives me 100 gallons of water while Boondocking. Thank you for your great videos.

Nice video. You can use a hose clamp to secure the bandit... note: pay a little more for the stainless one. Also works for using a separate bandit with clamp on dump stations that only have a non threaded hose so I can still use my black tank rinse. Stay safe sir.

Hi Ray, I noticed you have a heavy duty link chain in the back of the bed that looks like it's connected to your hitch. Do you use that to lock the hitch to the truck? Thanks and always, learn alot from your videos and great and clear explanations! Dave
Yeah, I have the chain locked to the truck bed tie ring at one end and then run through the hitch and up to a couple locks on one of my tool chest lids. Mostly for show to dissuade thieves and so someone would make chain rattling noise if messing about with it. I also have a second chain like that for locking things like my generator or ladder to my trailer. It's galvanized so doesn't rust. I have plans to do an upcoming video showing how I have everything packed into the truck. Being full time we carry a lot of stuff! I try and get a good portion of the heavy items into the truck since it has quite a bit of payload capacity being a 3500. It was a bit of a puzzle getting it all to fit and easily accessible. :) Cheers, Ray

The filters are bolted to the trailer bumper and really no reason to filter the water that goes into the bladder. Cheers, Ray

There is a dump station about 3 miles down the road in the full hookup campground area.
That’s awesome. If the water bladder is close enough to the fresh water tank will the water bladder water gravity feed from hose to fresh water tank? Or is a 12v imperative?
I haven't tried it, but I figure it should work if you can get it high enough above the gravity fill hole. The higher up above, the better for the siphon action to work. So guess it depends on the truck bed height. In my case, the bed isn't much higher, so I don't think it would work great. I'd have to add some sort of platform so easier to use a 12V pump. :)
How far to dump either the grey or black tanks? I'd like to do more "boondocking" but my wife doesn't!! She wants full hook ups!! Cable and WiFi too!! Oh well!! I need to put one of the 12 volt plugs in the back of my truck too!! nice setup you have! Miss the Ford dually!
At this State Park the dump is about 3 miles away. We can go about 7-10 days between dumping. We have 1600 watts of solar and 600 amp-hours of battery capacity so no need for electrical hookups. Have good cell coverage so good internet connection, so just watch streaming shows vs cable, though I can get some TV channels on the antenna. The camping fee is only 10 bucks a night. But for us it's more about not having a neighbor, 10 feet away. :)

Was boondocking in ocotillo wells Borrego springs area this week....how was the smell on that side?
Barely any smell at all. Much less noticeable than previous visits. I guess due to the lack of fish in the sea these days. Before we would see tons of them on the shore, now don't see them on the shoreline.
I've been thinking about how I could adapt my overland system to use your basic idea. Have you experemented with how high your water bladder can be and stil be able to fill it from the spigot and water bandit? I'm thinking if I put the water bladder on top of my overland trailer (eyeball height) I could use gravety to filter it through the Clearsource filters and into my camper water tank at tire height. I am not sure if the run from the water bladder to the Clearsource filters would have enough pressure without a water pump. But then with the pump, I could fill the bladder with clear running water from a stream?
Filling up high should work fine but I don't think there would be enough gravity force to pass through the Clearsource very well. Have a look at this Blu Tech system. Its much smaller. I tried to order on of these but delivery was into January and I'll be long gone. Do you use a water softener at all Ray?
No, I haven't, not sure where I would put the tank. I find I'm good if when I get back to BC I do a good flushing then let the soft BC rainwater run through things for the next 6 months. :)
Hi, how long does it take to transfer the bladder into tank? Thats the same one i'm looking at.
Maybe 10 minutes or so. Depends on the pump used. I think the old Flojet one I use does about 3 gallons per minute. get a faster pump and it will be faster. :)
Hello Ray, is the inline water meater made for drinking water, BPA, Lesd free etc, same for water bandit? Does it really matter if not since you have a filter and also the Acuva UV filter ?
The water bandit is Low Lead Certified: Our hose-to-faucet adapter conforms to all federal and state-level low-lead laws; CSA low lead content certified to NSF/ANSI 372 not sure about the water meter, likely just plastic inside, but the water passes through quickly so doesn't sit inside for time, then is filtered so doesn't worry me.

@@LoveYourRV Tony is on the right path . I too use a water bandit and a hose clamp. I only run the water about 1/2 throttle though if the spigot has a lot of pressure.. works very well. BTW ... if this is the same bladder you had a couple of years ago its appears to pass the test of time.

Can you haul water in this bladder for a period of time like a tank?
Yes, it can be used to store water for emergency or I have hauled water for hundreds of miles with it in the bed of the truck.
How can you connect to public water fountain to fill 5 gallon water bottles?
You could likely rig up some kind of funnel with a hose attached.
Is that the Salton Sea? I didn't know about a State Park There.
Yes, Salton Sea State Recreation Area on the north shore www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=639 Has some full hookup camping areas and some primitive dry camping areas too.

Can you use your Starlink service where you are at? If so, how is that working?
No, my Canadian Starlink Dish hardware won't work in the USA at this time. They tell me they are working on it but at this time Starlink hardware is only useable in the country you ordered to. So I cancelled the service and hope to reactivate when I get back to Canada in the spring. Cheers, Ray
@@LoveYourRV Thanks Ray for the demo. I must say I bought the same brand 3 years ago and also like the quality and had no leaks. One thing you must do if traveling you must secure as it will roll forward. ( don’t ask I know this) 😉On my fifth wheel I just use the rv pump and select antifreeze fill and boom it works well to fill.
If you happen to run into any folks with a Starlink dish on your travels can you see if they moved it from the home location to say Quartsite and maybe post something? I have the Starlink in Montana and I am thinking of giving it a try while in AZ. My only concern is when we come back we’ll I be able to reconnect my service. We are in such a remote area it may not be worth the chance of not getting service again. Cheers!
I'm thinking that with all the thousands of RVers that visit Quartzsite the available Starlink slots in that cell will fill quickly. Its not really meant for congested areas. I've traveled with the bladder when the fiver was hooked up and just the truck. It sits nicely between the tailgate and the hitch on a blanket, never had an issue but never braked hard either. :)
@@LoveYourRV I forgot to say may bladder is 60 gals maybe that was my problem. When it rolled on me I was going down a hill without the trailer and all 60 gals rolled forward.
Thank you for the advice on bringing the dish. If there isn’t a slot available then I would use the hotspot. My concern is more that I would loose my spot in MT. Safe travels Ray.

What's the hurry? Don't need an electric pump. Use a simple vacuum gravity pump, they run with no electric.
Go for it if you like, but most RVs have easily available 12 VDC power so may as well use it.

Since over 75% of my audience is American I figure its best to use yards. The rest of the world is pretty good with Google so will figure it out. :) Actually until grade 3 or 4 I learned all the Imperial measurements then had to learn metric when we switched over. So I'm fluent in both. Funny thing is ask a Canadian how tall they are and you'll rarely get an answer in meters. or weight how many kilos? nah its lbs. Cheers, Ray

Ray I was just kidding with you. I think pretty much everybody knows a Meter is roughly equivalent to a Yard. I’ve been to Canada few times, always been treated well, I was in Montreal a few years ago and asked for a slice of some desert item. The lady asked me how much did I want. I really don’t know Grams, so she got kinda hateful and asked if I wanted 300 to 400 Grams. I asked her for the equivalent of roughly 4 Ounces. She got really hateful about it then. We are born wherever we are and we grow up learning what one learns. There’s no need to be haughty and rude. Anyway, I was just kidding with you. I appreciate what you do, I’ve learned a lot from you, and next year will be my 1st year in AZ and might get to meet you, buy you a beer or 5. Take care, be safe. (Your wife too).
