    We have a 50-gallon truck mounted water tank with a 12vdc pump setup similar to yours. But, we do not have a composting toilet. We added a truck mounted 39-gallon blue-boy with a macerator that allows me to haul away black and gray water. We have camped in the desert (LTVA in Quartzsite, AZ) for 4 months without moving; just hauling in water and out waste. The system you have will serve you well!

    To all the folks who are concerned (rightfully so) about the weight.. here is some math.
    Thankfully they have a real 3/4 ton truck that has a 2900 pound payload. A lot of 3/4 trucks with turbo diesel, sun roofs, leather power seats and such are lucky to see around 2000 pounds.
    So let's take;
    Tank 50 pounds
    Water 625 pounds
    Shell 150 pounds
    2 ebikes 126 pounds
    Pets 120 pounds
    Roe and David 260 pounds
    Let's add another 150 pounds for other stuff in the bed.
    That comes up to 1481. So 2900 minus comes up with 1400 pounds left over for hitch weight of their trailer. Their trailer is 575 pounds from the factory so they have quite the reserve. I also doubt they going down the road with the 75 gallon tank in the truck full until they get close to their final spot .
    Bottom line, they have it safe and sound. I wish more folks had their tow rigs with not near the max.

      Thank you so much for this comment Bill. You hit the nail right on the head! It gets exhausting when person after person tells me our setup can't handle the extra weight when they know nothing about our setup and the actual GVWR/GCWR of our truck and trailer. I really appreciate your accurate and well thought out comment 👍

    Nice info... Since we have a small travel trailer and we pull it with a 1/2 ton pickup I purchased a rigid polly tank in the bed of the truck I also placed an air valve in the lid and when i need to transfer the water to the trailer holding tank I put a small 12 volt air compressor on the air valve and this helps transfer the water.

    Hey guys, we use similar Jerry cans, 8 - 7 gallon tanks I have strapped to the front of the bed. 58 gallons in the RV tank and 54 gallons extra, Then I use a standard RV water pump with a hose to refill the RV tank. Works great. We just have a tonneau cover over the truck bed, so the only thing that needs to be stored on top of the tanks is the water pump and the hose

  • @jamesborsheim9382

    EXCELLENT: Thought #1 - run an electric cable or tap into the existing truck electrical to power the pump. Thought #2 - mount the water hoses and pump to a panel at the right rear of the truck bed ... and an on/off switch too. Thought #3 - install an electronic open/close valve to the gray water tank. Thought #4 - since you have a gray water dump hose, and since everything is plant based, why not water some cactus/plants/grass lands a short distance from your trailer (hopefully it's legal to do so). Carry on, enjoy the show very much.

    1.Use your trailer roof to gather rain water. On the way down to the fresh water tank, have an easily accessible thus changeable prefilter (coffee filter) and a Sawyer squeeze filter before it goes into the tank.
    2. I also like the "One Hour Shower" idea. Huge water savings.

    I use vinegar and paper towels for dishes. One can burn the towels after they air dry, or use cloth and put in regular laundry. There's a guy who made an Hour Shower with a filter that's real neat. I haven't used one, but it seems really cool. He goes under Gone Boondocking and in general has a lot of tips. He's a little bit of a strange dude.. but his ideas seem sound. I asked him about using the system for laundry and dishes. He had concerns about food, but he said that laundry would be a good use. I've seen another RVer evaporate her gray. That was a whole rigmarole but was kinda neat. She opened her valve only to a drip, put a thick sock around the hose end. That "dripped" into a box of rocks. It usually was evaporated before it actually hit the rocks but sometimes if the end got sopping, it would hit the rocks and dry out there. This is best for very dry climates.

    Another thing we do is if we are able to have a campfire, we use our gray water to put it out dead. We carry a gallon jug and have a place that a small hose attaches on the gray tank exit cap. That frees up space in the gray tank. Plus we do all the other things you suggested. With a little bit of effort it is pretty easy to make your water last.

    A simple way to draw water from your truck storage tank to the trailer is to connect the hose to the winter antifreeze intake (if equipped) after shutting off the intake from you trailer fresh water tank. This will utilize the existing fresh water pump that comes with the trailer. You would have to prime the hose with water first.

  • @scottfaasse1299

    You probably have already thought of this... but for the times that you can't get close to a spigot to fill up the truck tank directly, get a short run of clear hose to put in the 6 gallon water cans and use the pump to fill the truck tank from the can. I've done this and I have made one with PVC pipe with a elbow/hose adapter so I am not fishing the hose. You still have to ferry cans of water back to your truck, but it gives you options... and options are good!

    I also use a secondary water tank (40 gals.) in the bed of my truck. It's not permanent but it sure made refilling the trailer a lot easier not having to hold the weight of the jerry cans. A spare rv pump and hoses works great to speed up the transfer. My pump is connected to a long cord ending at a 7-way plug to use the trailer receptacle of my truck. I DO like your battery clip set-up better, it seems to be more versatile about power options. Thanks for the inspiration.

Using a Flo-Jet macerating pump, I think I could pump our waste into it. However, dumping the auxiliary tank would probably require using the Flo-Jet again because of the sinking of the solids.

    Here’s an idea for you. Related to powering your 12 volt water pump, keep in mind that you have electric power to the taillights. (You may need to turn on the lights, but you can easily tap into the wires to your taillights and instal a cigarette lighter receptor inside the truck bed. Just put the appropriate charger plug on your wires and plug in when you need the power. No need to run the wire to the trailer or under the hood. Very cheap to do. Hope this helps you.

Two bucket method for washing and rinsing of dishes....all about water conservation on both ends. Save daily use dish grey water in a bucket, for pre-rinse of dishes, before you wash them, will reduce water needs. Save pasta water for second cooking use, such as soups and stews. Smaller towels or those specialty survival towels that whisk away water and use them multiple times. Single use is definitely a water hog. Light weight clothing is another water saver. I don't have the rig yet but the house is sold and the RV isn't too far off. My plan is to get 2 bladders that fit in the back of my truck, one for fresh water and one for gray/black water. In your case you would only need the gray water bladder but you pump the gray water into the bladder and then just drive the truck to the dump station, maybe when you're getting groceries. You could probably fill your new fresh water tank at the same time. Pretty much give you unlimited time boondocking. The fly in the ointment here is the 14 day limit on most boondocking land, but it might work on LTVA land. Keep the good stuff coming.

    Great stuff guys! Someone may have mentioned it below, but what I've recently started doing is only using paper towels to wipe down plates and dishes immediately after using and then spraying vinegar water on them and wiping them down again. Works for most any dirty dishes, as long as you get to them immediately after using. Zero water consumption.

      Paper towels are our friend, and since I like to do the dishes (yes, it's true) I have found that clean-up of pots and pans works way better right immediately after cooking while they are still hot and the food hasn't cemented itself to the surface. Then we add the paper towels to our night fire or save them for later disposal.

    I know you have a 3/4 ton truck with good payload but I think you should really go through a scale fully loaded and hooked to trailer and make sure you are not above your payload. Not to mention hauling a liquid is about the worst cargo you could have for safety reasons as it can slosh around shifting the weight in your truck and usually in the direction you don’t want it to go (like when rounding a corner). Love your videos! Stay safe!!

      Doing a weight and balance check is never a bad idea, but remember that he's an engineer (so am I) and not much of a wildman, so he's surely thought it through. (That's what we do, there is no off switch for it when faced with a technical matter.) If the tank has the full 75 gallons (600 pounds) of water in it, how exactly is it going to shift or slosh around in the tank? A full plastic water tank might as well be a solid block of plastic. And if it's empty, how is it going to shift or slosh? It's an empty plastic tank full of air. So now we're left just worrying what happens with it half full, 300 pounds of water in a tank the full width of a pickup bed, with the cross section being the size of a medium pizza box. 150 pounds of water in the left half, 150 pounds in the right half. 9 inches deep of water, its center of mass nice and low. Say a hard turn leaves one entire side bone dry and the other side packed full. Same weight shift as a 150 pound object moving 1/2 the width of the tank/bed, or a 75 pound dog crossing the whole width. Not exactly going to upset a pretty heavy pickup, or a lot of dogs would need to be buckled in. The lateral force from the cornering, and the center of mass, are more important than the weight shift or sloshing in this case. Can a Chevy 2500 safely drive around a curve with 300 pounds in the front of the bed down low, with at most 75-150 pounds of it moving around? I sure think it's not a problem. But then again, maybe I'm a wildman: I've divided up 2000 pounds of wood pellets into 3 trips in a Prius and fearlessly still driven around curves.

When we traded our primitive slide-in camper for our new 1978 20' Roadrunner gooseneck, 8th Grader me thought we really stepped up. Gas-electric fridge, furnace, AC, and full bath (Goodbye, porta-potty!). The marine toilet was a big convenience improvement itself. We didn't rough it way out in the middle of nowhere, though. State park camping areas with zero hookups, and poorly maintained chemical toilets were the most primitive we got.

    please be sure to emphasize to your viewers the other Leave No Trace practices you observe, besides plant-based soaps and shampoos, when disposing of excess grey water in the wilderness, such as: 1) you wipe your dishes and pots clean prior to washing so no food particles are in the dishwater you dump outside to attract animals to your campsite, 2) pasta water is drained into a little hole you dug for it and refilled with dirt to not attract animals either, and 3) you never dump grey water within 200 feet of a surface water or wetlands.

    Another advantage to your new system is the ability to pump water from creeks or lakes into your tank when faucets aren't available....with the caveat that you'd then need to not swallow any of that water.

      1.5 teaspoons of 8.25 %, or 2 tsp of 6% bleach would give 2PPM chlorine for 75 Gal. That would keep you safe, even in warm weather, without adding taste. Below 2ppm isn't noticable, and by the time the trailer tank needed refilling it would be well below that threshold.

      Thanks Jeb! Remember 54 gallons are in the RV's fresh water tank so the truck is carrying 87 gallons. The GVWR is 9200 pounds and the cargo capacity is 2907 pounds. So more than capable to carry all that water, storage, and trailer at full weight.

      @@FateUnbound Hi.
      Good to see such enterprising folks as yourselves, more power to you!
      You do not mention what the gross combined vehicle rating is for your truck. By my estimate, you are close to, if not over your GCWR. This is the most limiting number as far as doing what you are attempting. From what I have been able to determine, to achieve your maximum rated trailer towing wieght, you must assume you are carrying almost nothing in your truck. The GCWR is not equal to the TWR+GVWR. I think a lot of people fail to understand this point ( largely due to misleading advertising) and I would not want you to be misleading folks.

    • @johnmartin5280
      @johnmartin5280 4 года назад

      A little further to above, your trucks GCWR=16000lbs. Your trailer GVWR=8000lbs. Your truck GVWR 9200lbs Assuming both truck and trailer are loaded to capacity = 17200lbs= 1200 lbs over GCWR

    • @FateUnbound
      @FateUnbound  4 года назад +2

      Our truck weighs 6,700 pounds. Our truck's GVWR is 9,200 pounds. Our trailer's GVWR is 6,500 pounds. I looked up the GCWR for our truck and it is 22,000 pounds (2004 Silverado 2500HD Duramax Diesel). So even if our truck and trailer are fully loaded for a combined weight of 15,700 pounds we are still nowhere close to the GCWR of our truck 👍
      We purposefully bought a MUCH bigger truck than we knew we'd need to pull this small trailer so we knew we would never run into any issues with weight ratings.

    Always check local rules re dumping any sort of soap, though. For example, you've mentioned in prior videos about travel to Canada. Soap is considered a bear attractant. The national parks (which don't permit boondocking), don't allow dumping grey water, doing dishes outside and dumping in the bush or even using an outside shower. Rules in provincial parks vary somewhat, but you still can't dump from your grey tanks (that will get you a fine or ban). Actual US BLM-style boondocking is pretty rare in Western Canada (closest in BC is Forest Service camping and even that has rules).

    I think your current solution is superior to individual water jugs, but might I recommend that you switch to two Reliance brand water jugs, and get one of their screw in water purifiers as well? It's higher quality than the Ozark, and.. water purifier.
    For anyone trying to extend their water capacity on the cheap side, commercial grade 5-7 gallon water containers are WAY more durable than these containers, AND they're stackable. That means that they are much more space efficient, and they are load bearing, so you can lay a plank on them and stack stuff on top of them. :) Also, you can knock the plug out of the plastic bung and screw a spigot in to them, or even pipe them together to make a cheap water storage tank of your own. :)
    Consider using the top hose to fill. It will aerate the water better and give it a better flavor for drinking, and won't have that 'stale' water taste you get from water that's been stored for a while. Since it's in a closed (sunlight free) tank, algae shouldn't be a problem either. Speaking of algae, get a good inline filter to use EVERY time you fill that tank. I got tired of trying to figure out where the RV hose filters are actually rated at, so I opted for a brass and glass whole house particulate filter, with a drain on the bottom.
    FYI you're SUPPOSED to not use brass water fittings on potable (drinking) water, because it can leach lead in to the water. Good luck finding all of those fittings in stainless, though. :P
    IDEA: Mount a stock water tank (farm / ranch) float arm in your RV fresh water tank, then you can wire your secondary tank up to automatically fill your RV tank. ..I wouldn't leave the secondary pump automatically draining your truck battery, though. ;) Hmm.. you might be able to wire up the 1/2 tank indicator somehow to automatically fill the tank using a relay, then use the 3/4 tank indicator to turn it off. Kind of depends on how your indicator is wired up. I wouldn't rely on the full indicator, if you're sitting at an angle, it might overfill the tank and just dump 75 gallons of water out the tank overfill hose.

      One last tip for you two, (or anyone else reading this). The Dawn foamy dish soap (don't recall the name, it's blue with a silvery label) is great for washing one-two dishes because you actually get a very tiny amount of soap, which is all you need to wash A dish. :)
