Roller Derby: It's Kind of a Big Deal

- For my BFA project for Intermedia, I made a mini documentary on my roller derby team, the Old Capitol City Roller Girls of Iowa City, Iowa. Footage is from January - April of 2010 and the finished piece was screened at the Iowa City Public Library May 8th of that same year.
I have continued to enjoy making videos since then, particularly about roller derby, and hope to make more in the future. This is a taste of what I can create in long form with help of a few others.
Special thanks to Sarah Kanouse, John Pemble, Tim Blood, the University of Iowa Intermedia program and my team for letting me stick camera in their faces.

I am a Derby ref and I play Men's Derby and altogether I have lost 81 pounds (401 down to 321). Awesome exercise!

I've had more fun playing roller derby than doing anything else in my entire life
wish there were people that skated near where i am. I skate all over San Jose and have not seen one other person skating out side, and haven't seen a single roller rink.
I also want to start, but can you imagine - we do not have a single roller derby team in Russia! not a single one!
so it is not everywhere. yet ^^

Yes! and we have recruitment coming up. I would love to have you join us, but I do feel I should let you know that there is more derby in that area: Dubuque Bomb Squad, or the Quad City Rollers.

I'm from a (quite small) city called Adelaide, Australia and I'm proud to say we have our own derby league. Derby is spreading like wildfire and I'm so excited for the future of the sport. Thanks for the awesome video - P.s, The girl at 8:00 is so fucking cute ;)

Have you looked? Derby is EVERYWHERE these days. You'd be surprised once you start doing it, it's not scary at all and then becomes ADDICTING. Most leagues have a 18+ or 21+ age and it goes to as old as you want to play! When I made this video we had a 50 year old on our team who could out-plank everyone! There are also Jr leagues and men's leagues all over. Thanks for watching!

I'm signing up for the junior roller derby team in my state. :) It's 3 hours away, but I think it's worth it. :D
there are Jr roller derby teams too... i play on one of them..the Jr team i play on is called the chicago riots..look in to it if you really wanna be a derby girl!!

You may want to do less hard cuts when editing video. Maybe leave one shot running for longer and a slight fade as opposed to hard cutting everything? It'll look less jagged.

looks like there are 5 men's leagues in California. Otherwise, you can still get involved! Be a ref! Start your own men's league!

derby is every where from USA to our small country in the northern europe called sweden so derby moust be like every where some one moust just no it ecist.

but... i dont want to be loved ;-; I'M A CONFUSED SELF CENTERED TEEN THAT IS TOO MISUNDERSTOOD TO BE LOVED D: why would I ever want to break that image? (I'm sorry, something a psychiatrist said that alluded to the "fact" that all teens acted like that was really funny, so I made a joke about it xD)
