@@shelleyjohnson6375 I would love an update on your latest design. I have the same interest; making it easily washable. I'm finding it's difficult to figure out if the filter has fiberglass in its construction. Some have said the pleated ones don't, the cheaper ones do.
Kudos to you, sir! I am also an art teacher. :) Such effort that you have put into this. I do not have all of these tools here in isolation, but I believe that the most important parts are the filtration and a good fit around the edges of the mask (mouth and nose should be covered and the mask should fit to the curve of the chin according to the medical articles I have read). I do not have plaster, but I believe that I will sew a fabric mask with multiple layers and pockets that can be used to add filtration media. Around the edges, I will sew channels that will accept paper clips, tarp clips or portions of a metal clothes hanger. I will shape these to fit the bridge of my nose, etc. I will spray it with lemon juice after washing the completed mask. This will have to do. Good luck with everything! Thanks for all the helpful information.
Floral wire from the dollar tree, braided, works GREAT for the nose bridge on a homemade mask & you could also put it around the edges to allow you to mold it to the face. Its thin, but durable so it's very flexible but keeps a strong hold. I highly recommend it.
Great tutorial, but I'm completely confused at 23:00. You glued everything together, including the wire strip, to the form. Then you glued the filter fabric to the same edge. But then - you pulled the mask, including the wire stripping off of the form that you glued it all to. How did that happen?
Wow this is literally genius! I've placed 2 orders for the filters from your website today, I cannot wait to make these! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! - Hyang K

Wow! This Guy has Skills! I’ve never been more interested in watching a video. I’ve been in one type of Art or another all my life. Thank You for sharing 😷
LOL… I would actually love to talk to you. Ironically, I am an artist and a musician. I also was an Inspector at a Testing Lab for all types of toxic materials requiring several certifications re. filtration and PPE. I was the pain in the ass that had to make sure that the decontamination chamber‘s were put up correctly not to mention making sure that everyone followed the rules while I took air samples then went back to the lab to analyze them! It was all related to construction, but it’s the same thing and I understand all of what is going on with the virus. I, as you, am using what is on hand to make masks that are as good as an N 95. Honestly, we should combine are beans for a DYII mask! P.S. Creativity is my middle name, too!
@E Gibbons - I wanted to post this to your discussion page, but it looks like you don't have one, so this seems as good a place as any. When you talked about being an inventor and using art to solve problems, that's what prompted me to subscribe to your channel. I use art to solve problems, too, and have made many things out of many mediums over the years. I invented something for work using plexiglass, I have molded replacement parts and tools out of thermoplastic for work and home, I built a custom-fit air duct out of sheet metal, designed and built my own computer desk with built-in outlets and cable management, made a cast of my whole face without an assistant, made a Klingon mask out of latex and airbrushed it to look like real skin, punched wig hair into that mask for the hair line and eyebrows, and made my own hair punch for this purpose. For some reason, a colleague who knew I made all these other things was amazed to find out that I sew, too. Lol, if she only knew that these things only scratch the surface of what I have done over the years. Little did I know until recently that all these hobbies I've had over the years - and leftover materials that I've accumulated in the process - could actually help me make something that can save people's lives. Now that we both seem to have some extra time on our hands for the next month or so, I look forward to seeing what you do with this time, and will check out some other videos that you’ve already posted. Be well, and stay safe!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments. I'll look into a discussion page... I probably need to dig deeper into RUclips to see how to do that. ;-) I'm old-ish, but learning every day!

You are so creative ingenuity! I love to follow your idea❤️ You are good with your hands. Now, the world can be a nasty crazy place out there, we need a lot of courage and we need a lot of resilience after that, and we will fall down before we stand up… What really matters is the silence of the night in our conscience, when we are alone. We cannot control what happens but we can use what happens. We have so much reserves of love and support inside us, if we can just remember that in our mind and move on.
Excellent! I actually made an ultracal mold of my face a few years ago, for a Klingon mask I created out of latex one Halloween. I still have that face cast, and was thinking about using it to make a custom-fit mask for myself. I don't know why I didn't think about the foil, which is easier than some of the ideas I had for that purpose. Thanks! I have a question about the filter material. Well, two questions. When I suggested a Filtrete 1500 filter in a comment on another video, someone said he thought it would be hard to breathe through, because he tried one in his air conditioner and it made it work harder. Is this material easy to breathe through, and does it get hot after a while?
I folded the material to give additional surface area which is helpful. Larger surface = easier breathing. Wrinkling or folding the material will do this. The more folds, the easier it is to breathe. Thanks so much for commenting, and sharing on social media. Love to see what you make!
@T J I used cotton fabric and non-woven interfacing for my masks. Even so, you can reuse a disposable mask like the one in this video if you let it sit in a warm dry place for 48-72 hours to let the virus lose its viability on its own. The warmer and dryer the better, because cool and moist conditions will extend the amount of time that the virus will be viable.
@@LesignerGirl This has always puzzled me since first hearing that medical personnel are tossing them every day. Why couldn't each person have an area to store them successively on hooks and just rotate through them?
Awesome information. I taught high school Art, and I concur . What I have is meltblown material. Is it as good at filtration as your hvac material? Can you re-use your filters ? if so, how many times would you recommend re-using them?
Thanks for your comments. I am unfamiliar with meltblown material, so I can't honestly reply to that. Filtrete is tested and has a high quality inspection of their products so it is, without a doubt, MERS14.

Hello, my name is Debbie, that’s is very good for your own personal use when you want to make more for others why we’re making the cloth ones as well. But you didn’t say how long it would last Or is it reusable??? Thank you It’s always good to learn new things
The stuff they use for casts now is much easier to use and it gets hard in a minute, its on line but I can't remember what the actual name is, it comes in rolls. just thought you might want to look for it.
It's fiberglass rolls that we use now instead of plaster to make casts and splints. It is much lighter. Fiberglass rolls also need to be wet in order for them to set. I personally think plaster is still better because fiberglass rolls when wet are very sticky and difficult to work with. Sometimes we use KY jelly on the fiberglass to make it slick and to smooth out any bumps. I think fiberglass is also more expensive than plaster, but I don't know by how much.
Holy shit. I've been doing it almost the same way, but I've been using cardboard and glue for my template, and I'm use paper and mushrooms jar filters for the actual mask. Then staples and rubberbands.
Instead of plaster gauze would papermache work as a substitute? My thoughts are to use twist ties to contour the facial topography and make the mask first counter surrounding. But wire might not be necessary...
No, it is not strong enough. BUT you can use raw plaster from the hardware store, mix it with warm water, and dip fabric strips into that. Old t-shirts work well. I'll make a liquid plaster tutorial this week.
Excellent video. Mothers can show to their kids and do a family project in these isolated days. I run a cleaning biz and I already have Hepa Filters for my air scrubber and some Hepa vacuums bags. Great info and thank you for your time to share this. I hope this video can be share to many many people .
Plaster does not stick well to plaster, not much does... which is annoying as a painter, but great for this application. As anyone knows who has tried to paint plaster, the paint just peels off. ;-)
If you can get it into a liquid and spray it on, that should work. Lemon juice is sticky, so when it dries it stays in place. Perhaps adding a pinch of starch, like cornstarch would be beneficial.
These masks are NOT for others but for yourself. I spray my masks with rubbing alcohol when I return home from shopping to sanitize, or leave in the sun (UV LIGHT). Making masks for others this way is NOT recommended, and I say so. This is for the maker because we should NOT be buying N95s while medical workers need them.
It is NOT a paper filter, it is Filtrete HVAC filter material. It is meant to be breathable for your home's air conditioning. It is made from plastic fibers.
Really good and useful publishing. But to be complete it needs to be with subtitles for those hard to hear and those who cannot follow a conversation when people speaks faster than usual. Thank you in advance...
These filters are used to help us breathe well... so... if it had particles we should not breathe, they would not use them. Within the description of this video is a link to a doctor's video where he uses HEPA vacuum bags... so I feel confident we're okay with these. YOU however need to make a decision based on your own level of comfort and perhaps you would prefer a cotton mask. They potentially provide less protection, but you can spray them with lemon juice to help.
I've watched a few tubes on how to make masks. Yours kept me interested. I did wonder why you pleated the filter and not do 3 or 4 flat layers of filter with darts instead of pleats. It may have looked neater. I did enjoy watching, thank you.
Thanks! I guess my concern was more about function, and this will function well, but as I made more they "looked" better and better. I have not bothered to do another video because it will get lost in the fclutter of soooo many tutorials now and this is pretty good. Thanks for the comment!
Nice video, very informational. Couldn't you try a rubber mold and plastics? Matched with the filters you could potentially add replaceable filters that slide in and protect. Like the 3m 8511 with that small breath port you might be able to add replaceable packs to your masks.
I am sure there are other ways to make this but I wanted to create a video on how to make one with fairly obtainable stuff that would require very few tools. Rubber molds would be awesome, but takes some experience to do right. I could, but then this demo would be an hour or more. ;-) Maybe you need to make a tutorial on that process! ;-)
Great Video. Thanks. Has any of your followers been successful at reproducing this mask? I think this is a lot to undertake? Could someone just use the FILTRETE filters and citric acid and make a mask and would it be better than just a paper towel mask? Again thanks for a great video and your time.
The main idea is to incorporate the citric acid into the fabric. Making it into a liquid solution and spraying the mask will likely do that as it dries. Lemon juice does have sugars in it which we know is sticky, so in theory, it should imbed itself well. I am unsure if straight-up citric acid has the same property, but I am guessing it should be okay. Thank you for commenting and sharing on social media.
Re: the Filtrete material -- did you discuss the direction of the air flow? I must have missed it getting coffee. Are you positioning the filter so that the air flow is moving in the prescribed direction in the installation instructions? I might use in my hand sewn mask. Thank you.
No. I did not. It may be something some want to take into consideration, but my feeling is that to get through in either direction is what we're preventing, us getting or us passing the virus.
@@artedguru Which direction to place the filter air flow is a crucial part of the filter system. It is very irresponsible of you not to correct this. Its very simple, you can use your youtube editing to place text over your video, without taking it down or reuploading. Simply add a comment during the part you are adding the filter about the direction of air flow.
I doubt it makes a difference. Another channel showed the magnification of the fabric. There was no perceivable difference. Perhaps the manufacturer has a preference for there framework?
@@christine3071 the air flow should be facing towards you wearing the mask. So it has more of a filtration on you pulling things in when you take a breath. That protects you more than when you exhale out. However if you want to be mindful to others, use two layers. One flowing in you direction and other flowing out. :)
Use "melt blown" non-woven cloth instead. It is what N95 masks are made of. There are three specific types which are layered according to their characteristics. Very inexpensive on Ebay.
@@briarrose29The outer layer is for durability. The middle layer is the stiffest and is used to provide shape to the mask. The inner layer is made to be next to the skin. Each layer has a pore diameter of only 1 micron. Viruses have diameters between 20-50 microns or more.

The only problem with paper mache is it can take days to dry. This is why I used plaster. It hardens in a few minutes. Best of luck to you and thank you for commenting!
Now you have to just test it. Try using a smoke machine through it. The option is wearing the mask, and spraying perfume in the air, can u smell it? It'll be good to know how effective it is.
You cannot wash this mask. You can use the material to line filters, or make a mask with the material. It will last longer if you wash your face often. You can "sanitize" it with rubbing alcohol or sunlight.
and how do I purchase the kit and get expedited shipping? My account brings the items up individually on Pay Pal so I do not know if expedited shipping will occur if I pay for it.
E Gibbons I made my first mask of three masks and fear there is not enough filter fabric in the kit to make the origami folder you speak of in the video. Neither is there enough to cover the wire or trim the edges of the mask per the video. The mask as is seems to open to a single layer because I had to improvise. ☹️
Just a question friends. So, we like n95 masks because they can filter out the size particles we need to to filter in order to not catch the coronavorus My question though. They say cloth masks don't work. But what if you kept adding layers of cotton to your cloth mask? Like a regular cloth mask is simply not as good. But what if that cloth was layered over and over to create a thick covering for you......
Actually, some tight weave cotton fabric can make a mask as good as a surgical mask. Hold the fabric up to the light. The less light you see, the better. They suggest at least 2 layers of fabric, I'd say sew a filter in the middle to make it even better. Knit fabrics are the WORST and offer no protection.
So I make my cotton masks out of t shirts. And then add another folded up t shirt to the inside. It is Incredibly thick. Like one third an inch thick. Would that help at all
N95 rated mask are only able to filter out particles that at .3 microns or LARGER. The coronavirus particles range in size from 70-90 nanometers. At 90nm that is .09 micron which is SMALLER than the masks can filter. AND that is the LARGEST of the virus particles so ALL of them are small enough the penetrate the masks. Not to say that they ALL WILL penetrate but there certainly is enough room to all some to pass and all it takes in a few particles for you to contract it. FYI.
Yup, but they are rated 95% effective hence the name. They also use citric acid to neutralize virus particles. Link in description. It's not all about the filter, but it helps. Mine is MERS14 so even better filtering than others.
Love this video, the hospitals need them right now, together we can fight this! We also made a video on how to get rid of the ear pain face masks causes, everything for our hard working health workers❤️🙌
John, if you go to my blog in the description, you'll be able to contact me directly. As a physician, I'd appreciate your comment on here about how effective you feel my design is. This would help me make sure I am on the right track. I assume that you want to contact me because it looks promising. To be fair, this mask is highly personalized, though with the nose wire it can have some adjustment. My spouse is more average-sized so we might be able to use them as a model for an average size mask. We'll chat more via email. Thanks for reaching out.
No. You cannot wash this. You can sterilize it with rubbing alcohol or peroxide or leave it in direct sunlight. I use mine for about 1 hour once every two weeks. I try to not go out.
I do not agree with the use of citric acid or lemon juice to saturate the filter. It is quite possible the saturation of citric acid might compromise the electrostatic charge imparted on those filters. Electrostatic capture of germs or dust is one important mechanism of those filters.
BUT they are selling them for VERY high prices, and not getting them to hospitals. Those who sell N95 masks on Ebay and other platforms are vultures who should think of others before they gouge a world in crisis. They should call their local hospital, and sell at the same price they were before the crisis or give them away. If doctors get sick, and they are, how do we survive this crisis? Making your own is the best solution. Thank you for your comment, I do appreciate that you took the time to share!
The point is to make a positive mold that is essentially creating the surface of your face. If you don't mind putting hot glue on your face, you don't need to bother with a mold. So the first layer is the skin from the outside (The Negative) and the second inner mold is then your skin in plaster (The Positive) which you can apply hot glue to. It's basic engineering that goes back to Greek and Roman history. Basic, but a process.
I do not throw out my mask until it breaks. I disinfect it after every use with rubbing alcohol or peroxide. I also only go out 1x a month or so. VERY Rarely. The lemon juice adds a layer of protection because citric acid is the active ingredient in N95 masks.

Great tutorial, but I'm completely confused at 23:00. You glued everything together, including the wire strip, to the form. Then you glued the filter fabric to the same edge. But then - you pulled the mask, including the wire stripping off of the form that you glued it all to. How did that happen?
If the plaster is slightly damp, the hot glue does not stick well to it. It's ALMOST a non-stick surface.
Wow this is literally genius! I've placed 2 orders for the filters from your website today, I cannot wait to make these! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

This is a great video and I appreciate the time and energy. I wonder if I could use this approach to make a full head mold mask? Just thinking.
Yes, you can, and if you shave your head it will work better... so most people won't do it. This works well enough for me. Thanks for commenting!

Welcome aboard!
Thanks for your kind comments!

I really appreciate the comment! Thanks!
@@artedguru Thanks!

If you want a new one, you have to make a new one or sanitize them to re-use. That's what we do. We sanitize with rubbing alcohol (91%) or peroxide.
The stuff they use for casts now is much easier to use and it gets hard in a minute, its on line but I can't remember what the actual name is, it comes in rolls. just thought you might want to look for it.
Plaster Bandages, Plaster Craft, lots of different names. Here it is on Amazon: amzn.to/2T5jRA2

Here you go: ruclips.net/video/RnG4X-bFUgs/видео.html
@@artedguru nice~ Thank you@!
After you sanitize it with Rubbing Alcohol (91%), do you have to re-apply the lemon juice?
no.
Excellent video. Mothers can show to their kids and do a family project in these isolated days. I run a cleaning biz and I already have Hepa Filters for my air scrubber and some Hepa vacuums bags. Great info and thank you for your time to share this. I hope this video can be share to many many people .
How did you separate the mask from the plaster? They were glued together.
Plaster does not stick well to plaster, not much does... which is annoying as a painter, but great for this application. As anyone knows who has tried to paint plaster, the paint just peels off. ;-)
FYI: I ran a test, if the plaster is just slightly wet, it comes apart even more easily.
You hot glued the wire to the mold, how did it then come off the mold onto the mask material? Thx
Nothing sticks to plaster very well. Especially if you dampen it a little before you use it.
I have food grade citric acid that I would use for bath bombs. Think I could use that somehow? Maybe it would be even better than lemon juice?
If you can get it into a liquid and spray it on, that should work. Lemon juice is sticky, so when it dries it stays in place. Perhaps adding a pinch of starch, like cornstarch would be beneficial.
how do you get all the contaminants off that you got on the mask while making?
These masks are NOT for others but for yourself. I spray my masks with rubbing alcohol when I return home from shopping to sanitize, or leave in the sun (UV LIGHT). Making masks for others this way is NOT recommended, and I say so. This is for the maker because we should NOT be buying N95s while medical workers need them.
Let’s hear it for the arts! 💜🧑🏻🎨
My only concern is that filter paper. Have you worn it for extended periods of time? Is it safe to wear for hours at a time? In your opinion.
It is NOT a paper filter, it is Filtrete HVAC filter material. It is meant to be breathable for your home's air conditioning. It is made from plastic fibers.
Can you tell the ratio of lemon juice and water that is used professionally?
I used 100% lemon juice. No water. Mask makers use a chemical process to spray on citric acid.
I like the mold idea to find the right size when constructing, fit the mask but it this is way harder than sewing a mask.
Yup, it is harder, but in the description I include links to more simple masks. Thanks for commenting!

FYI: The virus CAN BE SPREAD by Breathing & Talking. Take it seriously, Wear a mask. tinyurl.com/wqk6a6q
I saw on different sites that there are things in the filters that should not be breathed in. Is that true???
These filters are used to help us breathe well... so... if it had particles we should not breathe, they would not use them. Within the description of this video is a link to a doctor's video where he uses HEPA vacuum bags... so I feel confident we're okay with these. YOU however need to make a decision based on your own level of comfort and perhaps you would prefer a cotton mask. They potentially provide less protection, but you can spray them with lemon juice to help.
This guy makes one that looks pretty good too: ruclips.net/video/R3cS6ikk_3M/видео.html

@@artedguru Being a female I like things looking nice too :-)
You didn't explain how you used the lemon juice. Or did I miss it?
You spray it on before you make the mask OR when you're done. It is in the video, but it's a long one, I know... ;-)
I’m allergic to lemons can orange or lime work as well
You should probably purchase some citric acid then.
Yes, the filter is a good one and can be incorporated into more simple masks. I link a few within the description.
I heard you can use a weed barrier fabric as a filter? Isn’t that harmful?
That is very bad to use. No protection at all.
Could you use fine grain citric acid instead of lemon juice?
The main idea is to incorporate the citric acid into the fabric. Making it into a liquid solution and spraying the mask will likely do that as it dries. Lemon juice does have sugars in it which we know is sticky, so in theory, it should imbed itself well. I am unsure if straight-up citric acid has the same property, but I am guessing it should be okay. Thank you for commenting and sharing on social media.
Hello and thank you! Question.. is it heavy?

@@xnxtlvlx4194 What direction should it be? Can you explain this simply?
@@christine3071 the air flow should be facing towards you wearing the mask. So it has more of a filtration on you pulling things in when you take a breath. That protects you more than when you exhale out. However if you want to be mindful to others, use two layers. One flowing in you direction and other flowing out. :)
Use "melt blown" non-woven cloth instead. It is what N95 masks are made of. There are three specific types which are layered according to their characteristics. Very inexpensive on Ebay.
That's why I use Filtrete, not too expensive.
@@artedguru Isn't filtrete a glass-based filter material? We don't want to be breathing THAT in do we?
Which one do you recommend?

How did you use the lemon juice? When do I use it?

How many times can you use this mask before washing?
You cannot wash this mask. You can use the material to line filters, or make a mask with the material. It will last longer if you wash your face often. You can "sanitize" it with rubbing alcohol or sunlight.
Very Nicely Done
I appreciate you.
In reference to your kits, how many masks will one kit make?
and how do I purchase the kit and get expedited shipping? My account brings the items up individually on Pay Pal so I do not know if expedited shipping will occur if I pay for it.
3 surgical style masks or 1 N95 style mask. There is more material included than actually necessary in case something breaks. Thanks for asking.
The filter you send, does it contain fiberglass? I am very concerned about that.
also how so I do the expedited shipping
E Gibbons I made my first mask of three masks and fear there is not enough filter fabric in the kit to make the origami folder you speak of in the video. Neither is there enough to cover the wire or trim the edges of the mask per the video. The mask as is seems to open to a single layer because I had to improvise. ☹️
Just a question friends. So, we like n95 masks because they can filter out the size particles we need to to filter in order to not catch the coronavorus
My question though.
Would that help at all
@@robertnewton5343 No. T-shirts are the WORST possible material because they are stretchy. Use woven cotton. ruclips.net/video/J4cmgXTVmsk/видео.html

Thank you for being an inspiration

Is this a washable and reusable mask?
No. You cannot wash this. You can sterilize it with rubbing alcohol or peroxide or leave it in direct sunlight. I use mine for about 1 hour once every two weeks. I try to not go out.
@@artedguru thanks
I do not agree with the use of citric acid or lemon juice to saturate the filter. It is quite possible the saturation of citric acid might compromise the electrostatic charge imparted on those filters. Electrostatic capture of germs or dust is one important mechanism of those filters.
Then don't use it... However, the manufacturer uses citric acid, though not likely in a liquid form. Their patent does not reveal how they infuse it.
You can get them on ebay. There are tons on there
BUT they are selling them for VERY high prices, and not getting them to hospitals.
@@artedguru yeah you are right, they are selling them for average 30 to 50 bucks each and who to say its actually new.
Dont get it what was the poi nt of making two plaster molds
The point is to make a positive mold that is essentially creating the surface of your face. If you don't mind putting hot glue on your face, you don't need to bother with a mold. So the first layer is the skin from the outside (The Negative) and the second inner mold is then your skin in plaster (The Positive) which you can apply hot glue to. It's basic engineering that goes back to Greek and Roman history. Basic, but a process.
The got glued wire released easily from the mold seems like it would have really stuck
@@cadeo517 He's answered that question several times. Apparently stuff tends not stick to plaster and if you wet some first, it comes off even easier.

Hi. How often do you dispose of it? And do you need to spray with lemon juice daily? Thanks
I do not throw out my mask until it breaks. I disinfect it after every use with rubbing alcohol or peroxide. I also only go out 1x a month or so. VERY Rarely. The lemon juice adds a layer of protection because citric acid is the active ingredient in N95 masks.
Is there fiberglass in any of the filters you use?
no, please read the description.
