- This video presents how to sculpt and model a woman's head out of clay, by a simple step by step method.
Starting from the head basis, he is sculpting all facial parts by the method he developed during years of sculpture teaching. From this video you can see that human head sculpture is similar to any type of person, man or woman. Still, there is specific features that gives to the portrait better expression. You can see at the second part of the third minute, how the sculptor transforms basic human head to beautiful woman by working on facial feminine features.
This short movie illustrates Alexander Cherkov's original method for sculpting human portrait of clay in natural size and transforming it to any type of person, at any age, sex, race and in any mood, here is the example of young female head.

What a beauty she is! It was a great pleasure to watch her creation..
Proof that high quality video, catchy thumbnails and editing are no equal for the tempered raw skill of an artist. Very few mistakes, each movement calculated and honed. Elements of both a natural and a dedicated practitioner.
A few things I picked up on from this video and Alex’s techniques:
He is using mostly symmetrical hand gestures.
First gentle impressions before deep ones; as seen after marking the cross-section for the eyes.
The neck was formed following the relief of the major surfaces of the face, some of the neck and shoulders also used economically for the hair.
Eyes are carved to emulate the hollow pupil.
Intricate use of the fingers especially for details like lips and nostrils. A tool is only rarely required for detailed and folded planes, like in those of the eyes and their lids.
When marking positions of the mouth and nose he is often standing back to get a bene vista and then moving closer for detail. Stepping back and forth from the sculpture only, due to the rotating stand the sculpture lies on which makes circling unreasonable. Due to this, you probably want to keep both the symmetrical front view and the profile views in mind whilst proceeding, checking them every so often.
Large areas are quickly smoothed with the palm during the initial stages of development.
