How does an artist copy the 200-year-old techniques of master sculptor Antonio Canova?

- Master sculptor Fred X. Brownstein takes on the challenge of copying Antonio Canova’s sculpture “Venus” using Canova’s unique 200-year-old techniques.
Brownstein trained in the Pasquini studio in Querceta, Italy, where he learned to sculpt by carefully observing Italian masters.
Brownstein is one of the last people in the United States with marble carving skills of this caliber. He is keeping the practice alive and hopes to meet Canova’s standard.
Will he make the cut?

Fred doesn't sculpt like a great.. he is a great. He has many original pieces of extreme craftsmanship and artistic maturity. The number of skills involved in his work is gargantuan. And in addition, this is one top notch video production that does a great service to both Mr. Brownstein and the producer of this video.

I am Italian, and I vividly recall my grandfather donning this paper hat. He shared with me that the tradition of wearing such hats transcends generations, passed down from his father, and it piques curiosity about how far back this practice extends. To my knowledge, it could well date back to the time of Michelangelo or even earlier. Whenever engaging in any form of this stone-masonry craft, it was customary to don a newspaper hat, or any available paper. Another frequently used material was the reused brown paper bags from bakery shops, which were originally employed to package and sell their delectable loaves of bread.
The two most prevalent shapes for these hats are the square variant, as well as a triangular version known as "La Barca," (The Boat) resembling an upside-down boat."
Wow. This is so cool. Thank you for sharing your story.
Che meraviglia!
This was amazing. Would love to see more of his work and another interview with him, or three
I love this guy and his funky hat!
Fred, good on you! I loved the sfumato dust! To those viewing, Fred is indeed the real thing. He knows stone carving, having worked with Italy’s oldest and finest stone cutters and master carvers. If only, he might be granted another lifetime to work, he could be fully appreciated in America.
What an absolute genius of the art.
it might sound a bit odd, but I cried throughout the whole video. It is very moving to watch a master at work and the ancient technique! wow my goodness so precise, so detailed so mesmerizing! thank you
Very diligent, it's amazing that you are very in depth and experienced
Gotta get me one of them paper hats! Inspirational work!!
Bravo! What an incredible production.
So he is a real sculptor, of the old European school! My deep bow and respect to this master! There are few of these left in the world...
Wonderful. I wish I could apprentice and watch. I hope I can afford to sculpt before I am old.
Wow Fred Ive been to Cararra Pietrasanta and worked with my partner who sculpts there every year...There are one or two new American sculptors who have real skills...Wonderful to discover your work.
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing
Excellent explanation!
Que maravilla.d documental , q persona más entrañable
Once you fall in love with the Stone, There's No going back 👍
Fabulous tradition.

We agree! What inspires you most?
Grace is in the air 🙏
Bravo!
I want so much to learn this.
wow i cant express my self that it's really a divine artist
I love it ❤❤😊
touching video should be a movie called the LAST SCULPTOR
That is amazing
Brilliant !
🥰Thanks for watching!
hey, I would like to contact some marble carving master in Buenos Aires? I want starting now!
I love how the paper hat has some lore
An interesting discipline to be sure...
I have become obsessed with sculptures.having a hard time finding a good place to get marble to carve in my area of the us
So sad to think that this beautiful man might be one of the last of his kind.
We shouldnt allow the artificial to replace the god given gift of creation
Interesting how as a 3d artist we use similar techniques to create 3d sculpts. At the same time I feel sad to think how such beautiful craft might die due to technology
If technology gets more powerful 10 years from now digital manual sculpting will too be something from the past. The kids are obsessed with AI and automation, there is already AI that generates 3d sculptures just like AI images.
@@LyubomirIko I totally agree, I am a 3D artist and I can see how in the future I could lost my work too
3d sculpting is fast food compared to the real Deal
@topy706 😂 that's what people that know nothing about 3D art always say
@@matthewstokes1608 the holy inquisition is looking for you
would love to learn but you have to start young

@@Tmrfe0962 It's called sarcasm
Why not create something new, like a Brownstein, rather than copy something old?
i cannot take this man seriously in that silly hat
I can't take you seriously with your silly comment.
And your dumb name too… grow up.
Boring kitsch
Bad manners, cinereus. You toughed it out for over 6 minutes and this was all you could come up with? Both rude and not witty or enlightening. Watch it again and see if you can come up with something more informative.
To be fair there is neoclassical movement that embrace your dismissive term and call itself the Kitsch movement. You should check Odd Nerdrum, he laughs at your face.
@@ottarsdatter @cinereus3601's comment is the only original thing anyone has said about this video so far. Everyone else is too busy praising something they don't even understand and patting themselves on the back for their effort. Also, to have someone make something "like" the original is not a copy. They should have simply made a mold of the original and made an actual copy.
I see God in him...
As an young artist I really wish I could learn sculpture from a man like him ! 🥹
