  • Master sculptor Fred X. Brownstein takes on the challenge of copying Antonio Canova’s sculpture “Venus” using Canova’s unique 200-year-old techniques.
Brownstein trained in the Pasquini studio in Querceta, Italy, where he learned to sculpt by carefully observing Italian masters.
Brownstein is one of the last people in the United States with marble carving skills of this caliber. He is keeping the practice alive and hopes to meet Canova’s standard.
    Will he make the cut?

Fred doesn't sculpt like a great.. he is a great. He has many original pieces of extreme craftsmanship and artistic maturity. The number of skills involved in his work is gargantuan. And in addition, this is one top notch video production that does a great service to both Mr. Brownstein and the producer of this video.

I am Italian, and I vividly recall my grandfather donning this paper hat. He shared with me that the tradition of wearing such hats transcends generations, passed down from his father, and it piques curiosity about how far back this practice extends. To my knowledge, it could well date back to the time of Michelangelo or even earlier. Whenever engaging in any form of this stone-masonry craft, it was customary to don a newspaper hat, or any available paper. Another frequently used material was the reused brown paper bags from bakery shops, which were originally employed to package and sell their delectable loaves of bread.
The two most prevalent shapes for these hats are the square variant, as well as a triangular version known as "La Barca," (The Boat) resembling an upside-down boat."

Fred, good on you! I loved the sfumato dust! To those viewing, Fred is indeed the real thing. He knows stone carving, having worked with Italy’s oldest and finest stone cutters and master carvers. If only, he might be granted another lifetime to work, he could be fully appreciated in America.

If technology gets more powerful 10 years from now digital manual sculpting will too be something from the past. The kids are obsessed with AI and automation, there is already AI that generates 3d sculptures just like AI images.

@@ottarsdatter @cinereus3601's comment is the only original thing anyone has said about this video so far. Everyone else is too busy praising something they don't even understand and patting themselves on the back for their effort. Also, to have someone make something "like" the original is not a copy. They should have simply made a mold of the original and made an actual copy.
