I've been using this for about 2 weeks now, and I really have no complaints other than the limited selection of apps. But that will change eventually. It works great.
Just got a Nvidia Shield TV!!...its such a beast!!! Well worth the money!! You get what you pay for, that's for sure! Its so well built, the craftsmanship is superb! Best android box out there!!
+Roger Leo I picked up the Intel Compute Stick, and using it as my main media player, I've only had it a few days, and so far, am really pleased with the performance. I have went through trial and error, trying to get the setup that is right for me, in doing so, I've recently had the following items hooked to my TV in order to stream Kodi, Netfliz, Amazon Prime, and Plex. So far, I tried: Matricom G8 Quad, OTT Box Quad 4K, Roku 2, Asus Slate Tablet, Lenovo laptop, and the Intel Compute Stick. The Matricom performed the slowest - and gave me the most problems, the movies played off center, hard to adjust without a lot of research. Roku 2 is the fastest and most reliable (but for me, limited to Netflix and Amazon Prime - which are the only items I'm interested in from Roku - if I had a smart TV, Roku would be overkill and duplicate the TV apps). So far the Intel Compute stick is the fastest and clearest windows based streaming device, it is clearer than the ASUS slate, which I thought would be unlikely. Anyway, to clarify, it is faster than everything except for the Roku. Additional helpful information: You will need to get a USB multiplier (not sure the official name - so you can go from 1 USB to 3-4) also a wireless mouse with a keyboard is handy or an infared TV remote setup to work with Kodi, Netflix, etc.The Stick comes loaded with Luinx or Windows 8.1, I got the Windows version, and updated it immediately to Windows 10 (flawless - make sure to use the 32-bit version only - as the 64-bit is not supported on the Compute Stick). I turned off the Windows password function and setup it up to boot directly into Kodi on startup - that is really nice. You can also make a few minor adjustments in the bios to increase performance, which I have not done yet. Additionally, I travel from time to time and this device is ultra portable, plug into any HDMI TV or computer screen and you have a full computer at your fingertips anywhere you go. Let me know what you settle with. I'm interested in the Nvidia Shield - I want one, but will wait a bit, after I do get this, I will move the Intel Compute Stick to the spare room.
I have used chromecast and amazon fire tv stick so far. What I like about fire tv stick is that I only paid around 25$ on black Friday which is super cheap. I am also looking forward to Nvidia shield and hoping the price will drop by the end of year
What SDXC card would you recommend? Speed over capacity? Remember I don't plan on recording much. Thank you in advance and keep up the great work. Aloha and Mahalo.
River man, would you please make a video on OTG storage for the nexus player, i am using mine with dlna on my pc, with vlc and kodi as clients, but what about when you don't wanna load a big file into the pc, let's say 8gb like so Great review as always btw, pretty well done
Great review man, like always :) Question for you, can I use a PROBOX2 Remote+ for gaming and control the box like the original NVIDIA remote? And since you have many remotes, which is the better with NVIDIA?
The probox2 remote+ works pretty well... I doubt it would be that useful for gaming though. It can come in handy if you need a mouse in a game once in a while. But it does work on the shield.. The shield is mainly setup for toggle remotes though (which the remote+ has too).
Jlili M.Malek Good idea. I will if I can get enough time. I'm going super busy this month but I will do my best. If i did a quick video with light editing maybe I put it up over at Riversfirstlook. ruclips.net/channel/UCm1wnzfkmHUsLFHpI2rp-ugvideos
Great review... was awaiting for this review but i got stuck between Minx neo X8-H and Nvidia Shield any suggestion... I'm not in games much. Please advice
Good point I think in the long run if you're going to copy apks all the time best way is to use TeamViewer because it's quicker. But if you only doing it one time yeah the ad card might be the easiest.
Hey thanks for getting back to me, great reveiw! I am curious to know, how does dolphin emulator run on the X1, as I have seen reports that the K1 in the tablet has excellent performance although sound latency issues. But who needs sound when game play fps 54-68 :) Thanks in advance.
I'm still undecided about this system, but how many support from 3rd party companies like: capcom, ubsoft, and rockstar games are devoted to this device? I'm an gamer looking to try something new in 2017.
I think this product hasn't any competitor. Minix is a good product also but it is not able to manage well with kodi (official software) or even Netflix 4K. I'm really looking forward to have one nvidia shield!!!
+srjuanjo This is an excellent box. Especially for gaming Nvidia is really good for gaming right now. As far as Minix goes if you use the minix version of Kodi (it has to be called XBMC though) it works really well. That one is custom built by Kodi to work on the minix boxes.
Hi, thank you for a great review. But i have one question. I wonder if it's quiet, I mean there is a fan and if so, is there a small or no one at all. I'm looking for a quiet player.
+Portu Bello For what I do on Kodi it worked fine. Kodi is designed for basic remotes so it should do everything you need. If you ever get stuck you can plug in a USB mouse and use it that way as well. I'm not a Kodi guru so there might be some more advanced things that I haven't tried though.
+Tech Connect...Well on my MyGica Android Tv box when Im in Kodi, I often use the left button on my remote to click a movie to add it to my favourites, So I just wondered if the Nvidia Shield with the remote can do the same with its limited buttons....I just want to make sure before I actually purchase one.....
+Domo Rawrz I'd say the 500GB version. The mechanical hard drive doesn't really slow it down at all. The 500GB is so awesome to have because games take a lot of space.
I want to buy this product. But I lie in a region where there is no internet facility. So is internet necessary all time to use this product. Is MX player available free for this device or I have to pay for it. And will it support apps like shareit and xender.
So am thinking about getting this but am not sure if it's worth it now or waiting for a new one to come out. So can anyone help me out on this decision??
hello mister tree p can you please tell me how set up my Google Chrome on the shield I've tried it but can't figure the steps out just a little help if you can thank you standing by have a good day
+Larry Terrell You need to side load chrome browser. You can download the android version from apkmirrors com and then copy it to a thumb drive. Then install sideload launcher and es file browser on the shield. You may need to hook up a mouse to navigate tothe apk in es file explorer. You could use an air mouse remote control to navigate the browser too.
+christopher crowley Yes you can use the probox remote. It adds a mouse pointer but the pointer doesn't click on things in every app. Its the same for any mouse though.
really wanted to know if game downloads to USB is possible, I know for sure now about micro SD but USB sticks I have lots of already in 128gb capacity's, could you try or find out for me perhaps?
Great thanks for the Review 👌...I'm interesting to get one as a media player .. I have a home theater onkyo Receiver 5.1 .. So can the Shield pass throw DTS..DTS-MA if I used kodi or plex ?!
I am not a gamer and plan on just watching movies vis KODI, Amazon, etc. I don't record. Any reason to get the Hard Drive version or will the standard version be enough with a nice SDXC card?
Jeff Rocx Id say the standard version is perfect for you then. It might be faster too since its running completely off the flash memory instead of a hard drive.
***** I see. The video was going pretty long so I did that. I might do a whole video on sideloading later. The way a the end is easier than it was on the Nexus player.
Tim Savvy No. There is no way to add an internal HDD to the 16gb version. However you can add external storage to it via the USB ports on the back and the micro SD slot.
Hi Rivers. In your opinion, what is the best full keyboard/air mouse remote available for this device? I have tried 4 different ones so far, and with each one there are features that do not work, in which I need. ie. back button, menu/context, or a working keyboard/directional pad, etc. Just wanted to see if you found a good option for this yet. Thanks.
+Michael Chua Personally I just use the Shield remote on this my self but it sounds like you want to do a lot of typing. Id try this guy amzn.to/1O1irLa On android nothing is perfect. It seems like there are always a few keys that don't do anything but this guy has been pretty good for me on other boxes.
You forgot one more con...Android TV. It's still not as good as Roku or Amazon Fire tv. Interface may be fast due to the hardware but the suggested page sucks and the sevice relies too much on Google Play movies and music. It doesn't offer all the apps a cord cutter will be looking for like Amazon Prime instant video. Also not all games on the play store is supported unlike the Shield Tablet. If you want to stream your PC games to your TV just use wireless hdmi or Steam home streaming. I personally would skip this and go for a Roku 3 for a streaming device and a Shield tab for gaming. The only thing this is good for is 4k netflix streaming as far as I can see. Otherwise good video and good review. Keep it up.
+melvin khosa Agreed. Android TV means you CAN'T get the majority of apps on the Play Store. There are a lot of controller-enabled games that are not marked as compatible with Android TV but yet work fine when side-loaded. And even if an app is marked as compatible in the Play Store it may not turn up on the Android TV Play Store. You will have to open a web browser, go to the Play Store and choose install to there. Another thing is that keyboard+mouse is not very well supported. On plain old Android you simply hook up your cheap Logitech K400 and you are done. On Android TV it may very well be that mouse clicks don't register and if you use a non-US keyboard layout your are out of luck. This has worked out of the box since Honeycomb. I don't know what Google tried to achieve there but it has failed on every level. If you have a device with Android TV or contemplate buying one I can only advise to go to XDA first and find out if they have proper Android images to flash. Otherwise you are buying a skateboard without wheels and will be told that it is working as intended. Another word of advice: If you buy a Shield Android TV you will be able to do LESS with it than simply hooking up your Shield Tablet to your TV set. If you buy this for streaming just consider buying a Steam Link for 50$. nVidia game streaming from your PC is only available for supported games.
Travis Augustine In terms of hardware no doubt. But it's biggest setback is Android TV. It's simply not as good as Roku's or Amazon's UI. For gaming people with consoles can game and have a media box as well. You want to stream PC games? Use steam. This is a niche product through and through.
Does this Nvidia Shield Console support Netflix and RUclips streaming in 1080p and 4K? There are a lot of Android boxes that don't. My Minix Neo x8-h Plus does not support Netflix and RUclips streaming in 1080p and 4K.
Duros asfdgasf That's where they got me and a lot of people. The Minix Neo x8-h Plus can play 1080p and 4K movies from storage devices such as an external drive, thumb drive, camcorder, etc, but it will not stream 1080p or 4K contents from Netflix and RUclips because. Minix would need special permission from these companies. And furthermore Minix products can't register with the "Blu Ray Disc Association" since some of their apps stream copyright movies. If I had known all of that information then, I would not have bought it.
+Coleman Lim (Juay Kai) forward/backward is not realtime. Just shows you the time bar and you can paly at that position in the video. Audio search works fine. Audio through the remote works great. Not sure about pairing with other bluetooth devices but with Bluetooth 4.1/BLE it should be able to pair with your bluetooth audio device.
+svaykeo panhchakrong If there's and app in the android market for Karaoki you might be able to sideload it on the Shield. If that app does exist you might have bettter luck with something like a Minix X8Hplus amzn.to/1K0Gxpa
Quick question if you could help me, if I bought the 16GB version of the console could I save games which I download to a 128GB USB3.0 stick I have? so games are downloaded to USB as default or even micro SD? many thanks
You can store games, apps and other files on microSD cards, and you can set it to download the things directly to it. More info: support-shield.nvidia.com/android-tv-user-guide/index.htm#t=How_to_Use_a_Micro_SD_Card.htm Maybe it works the same with the USB storage, but i don't know that.
not liking the "new" style of intro with you on camera clearly reading, looks forced and not as on par with your "older" style of voice over intro etc. IMO. I also dont care too much for the added background music, just seems kinda blah and I cant remember if you had that kind of stuff on the older videos, just seems you changed your style of doing videos for the sake of change and you know the saying, "if It isnt broke dont fix it" ... Sure I'm nitpicking a little bit but just my critique and a request for you to go back to your older style of doing your videos with mostly all voice over, great camera shots/editing tricks of the trade and no forced you on camera intro. Still a better job than I could ever do and as always you do great thorough reviews so hope you dont take my comment personal, just my view as a thankful subscriber. ALOHA!
I just picked this machine up from your link seems nice but I hate that you can have a browser on the main launcher and also can you get a third party task killer for this device? good luck using kodi with out one :(
I've been using this for about 2 weeks now, and I really have no complaints other than the limited selection of apps. But that will change eventually. It works great.
Aaaah yeah ! Rivers getting serious with this new setup. Keep up the good work man
Thanks pntabuye!
Another great review by SCT, looking forward to getting my hands on one of these when they hit the shelves in Australia.
So far....a review with a lot of fact.... good job...
I want more!!
Nuruddin Shah Thank you Nuruddin.
Wow, great review, as always! I'm sold and will be using your link. Thanks for the great reviews!!
Big thx to you Andrew!
What is the price??
Hi River nice rievew, please tell me if console allows multiple users, like on the nexus device, tnx.
Good job rivers looking for more to see of the shield console from you
Great review, the best one so far of this Console, I must get my hands on one!!! Thanks !!!
Divinus FiliuS Thanks Divinus!!! Yes the Shield rocks.
Just got a Nvidia Shield TV!!...its such a beast!!! Well worth the money!! You get what you pay for, that's for sure! Its so well built, the craftsmanship is superb! Best android box out there!!
+Portu Bello I agree you get what you pay for.
Hey there, great videos. Could you do comparison on the android /Windows tv sticks. There have been few released recently.

is it possible to use the shield remote (not the gaming remote) with other android based box?
Great review
sergio costa Possibly because it is bluetooth but I bet the voice funcion isn't going to work very well or at all.
What SDXC card would you recommend? Speed over capacity? Remember I don't plan on recording much. Thank you in advance and keep up the great work. Aloha and Mahalo.
Jeff Rocx I used this one amzn.to/1Ba71Uk it plays 4k files just and its pretty good price for a 128 GB micro sd card.
River man, would you please make a video on OTG storage for the nexus player, i am using mine with dlna on my pc, with vlc and kodi as clients, but what about when you don't wanna load a big file into the pc, let's say 8gb like so

Does it work with android remotes that you reviewed?
An good video you can make is will your MyGica HD TV tuner work on the nivida shield .
+Colin Long That is a very good Ideal Colin. Im going to try it soon. Thanks!
+Colin Long I did test it and it does work if you sideload the padtv app.

I import it to Sweden frome Amazon but delevery time is long 10-17 july before i can have it.
What bluray player would u recommend?
Couldn't you copy them to sdcard and then install via EsExplorer.. :)
the way described @ Sideload seems long winded.
Good point I think in the long run if you're going to copy apks all the time best way is to use TeamViewer because it's quicker. But if you only doing it one time yeah the ad card might be the easiest.

Nice review! Just a question, how does it handle my steam games if I whant to play them form the pc on tv?
U seem to look somewhere high above the camera u r shooting or is it I'm getting u wrong.?
Nagateja Bonala I believe he is reading from a cue
I'm still undecided about this system, but how many support from 3rd party companies like: capcom, ubsoft, and rockstar games are devoted to this device? I'm an gamer looking to try something new in 2017.

Hi, thank you for a great review. But i have one question. I wonder if it's quiet, I mean there is a fan and if so, is there a small or no one at all. I'm looking for a quiet player.
There is a small fan inside, but i heared in one of the reviews that it's really quiet.
+Philip Dymling stealthy quiet. no noticeable vibration at all
Is this better then draco transmort aw80 ?
what about geekbench ?
Is there any Android game that supports 2 players at the same time ?
There are some games on the Shield with 2-4 players, but don't know if they are on other Android devices as well.
+koktelici Thats a good question. I haven't seen very many. Hopefully we will seem more soon.
can you play movies from a external hard drive?
+Hal Jordan
Yes through Kodi. I just bought the 500GB model. I love it. It runs better than the Mygica 1800.
With just a few buttons on the Shield remote, I hear you don't get full control of the menus within Kodi...Is this correct??
I need some help..what would be a better choice a 16gb or a 500gb? :/
+Edwin Infante Leocadio I really doubt anything better from Nvidia will come out at least fall. This is a very safe bet.
Tech Connect thanks i'l rethink it again
Do you need an android TV to use this?
+SuperMandibleclaw Really it is an android TV.
Good good good video !
+Gate 95 Thanks so much Gate!
Can you recommend a Air Mouse with Keyboard for Nvidia Shield
+KHONDOKAR RAHMAN This is a great all around keyboard with a touch pad that I use a lot. amzn.to/16J2EOO
Its cheap now too.
hello mister tree p can you please tell me how set up my Google Chrome on the shield I've tried it but can't figure the steps out just a little help if you can thank you standing by have a good day

Thank you for you help I will give this a try I have confidence that it will work finally somebody came through happy holidays to you
360p view quality only?
Still procesing probably
There's 720p
can I use a probox remote to gain mouse cursor
+christopher crowley Yes you can use the probox remote. It adds a mouse pointer but the pointer doesn't click on things in every app. Its the same for any mouse though.
really wanted to know if game downloads to USB is possible, I know for sure now about micro SD but USB sticks I have lots of already in 128gb capacity's, could you try or find out for me perhaps?
can you test epsxe in these setting: video rendrer open gl
sound latency very low
Great thanks for the Review 👌...I'm interesting to get one as a media player .. I have a home theater onkyo Receiver 5.1 .. So can the Shield pass throw DTS..DTS-MA if I used kodi or plex ?!
+Majed Abdullah yes... 7.1 passthrough can be configured on kodi and plex. I have it through Onkyo as well.
Aloha & Mahalo Bro
great upload man! i take it you can voice search in youtube?
+mastersofurmouth yes. If it's a google app, then definitely. Also Plex but not Kodi.
+mastersofurmouth Yes definitely in RUclips.
I was going to switch out my Minix X8-H Plus for the shield. Would this be a smart upgrade or should I just stick wwith the Minix.
+MarkZeds I'd say keep both. Minx is really good with app compatibility. The Shield is great at gaming and all around media playback.
great review, bit of a weird ending though xD
***** Thanks, why is is weird?
Because you said you were going to explain it but showed a text on the screen that it would be in the description.
***** I see. The video was going pretty long so I did that. I might do a whole video on sideloading later. The way a the end is easier than it was on the Nexus player.
Is the hard drive user replaceable or can I add an internal 2.5" HDD in the 16gb version?
Tim Savvy No. There is no way to add an internal HDD to the 16gb version. However you can add external storage to it via the USB ports on the back and the micro SD slot.
Hi Rivers. In your opinion, what is the best full keyboard/air mouse remote available for this device? install the apk file from a USB drive
+Chris Montoya or just download it from the pre-installed playstore

I can afford those Bros
This is an amazing box and it plays my emulators well.
it's so nice
Does this Nvidia Shield Console support Netflix and RUclips streaming in 1080p and 4K? There are a lot of Android boxes that don't. My Minix Neo x8-h Plus does not support Netflix and RUclips streaming in 1080p and 4K.
CMF Gaming Yes it does. One of the prime selling points of this is that it is capable of 4k streaming.
If I had known all of that information then, I would not have bought it.
+CMF Gaming (ChampagneGaming) I'm able to sell my Minix X8-H Plus for the same price I paid for it. I think I will and get the Shield.
shield can't output 4k gaming at 60 fps only video so you can play netflix in 4k resolution etc....
is the shield tv remote able to control PLAY/PAUSE, SKIP Forward/Backward in PLEX? Able to voice search in PLEX? Bluetooth audio supported?
+Coleman Lim (Juay Kai) forward/backward is not realtime. Just shows you the time bar and you can paly at that position in the video. Audio search works fine. Audio through the remote works great. Not sure about pairing with other bluetooth devices but with Bluetooth 4.1/BLE it should be able to pair with your bluetooth audio device.
cam i sing karaok on i?
+svaykeo panhchakrong If there's and app in the android market for Karaoki you might be able to sideload it on the Shield. If that app does exist you might have bettter luck with something like a Minix X8Hplus amzn.to/1K0Gxpa

Quick question if you could help me, if I bought the 16GB version of the console could I save games which I download to a 128GB USB3.0 stick I have? so games are downloaded to USB as default or even micro SD? many thanks
You can store games, apps and other files on microSD cards, and you can set it to download the things directly to it. More info:

Maybe it works the same with the USB storage, but i don't know that.
+Simon Hardy Thanks Derively. Yes you can store apps on a mico SD card. That's your (and my) best bet.
nice!!!
The device is totally the best!!!! and you add that it has kodi just tops it off!!! its the best!!!!
Best Gaming EVER!!!!
Can you play Minecraft on this
7mbps dl speed. Gonna totally love using Netflix in 4K.
Yes, I'm kidding.
not liking the "new" style of intro with you on camera clearly reading, looks forced and not as on par with your "older" style of voice over intro etc. ALOHA!
bigalphamale Thanks for the info. I'll probably do a shorter intro next time.
I just picked this machine up from your link
seems nice but I hate that you can have a browser on the main launcher and also can you get a third party task killer for this device? good luck using kodi with out one :(
