For everyone wondering we used this sexy Samsung 65" 4K Quantom Dot TV for this review: bit.ly/Samsung_65_4K_QuantomDot_CA An official review is in the works :D Stay tuned!
HardwareCanucks Is it possible for someone with the 500gb pro edition to remove the hard drive and clone it to a larger 2TB hard drive with the same form factor. kinda like what you can do with the PS4.
As a casual gamer, Android enthusiast and fan of emulation, there isn't a better device on the market! It also handily beats any streaming media player I own. I highly recommend reading more opinions and getting it at an *AWESOME price* here - amzn.to/1K5fLtj
+HardwareCanucks how did you get that huge a$$ tv like damn and if its 4k my jaw opens how do you afford all this plz tell me like your videos btw first one i subscribe keep up with da good work
HardwareCanucks, this is my first time visiting your channel and i got to say nice review on the Nvidia shield android tv. Really informative, makes me want one of these things. Keep up the good work.
Great review, man. I just ordered one of these last night. It should be arriving some time tomorrow. I've been using the handheld for about a little over a year now, and have not been disappointed. So I have no doubt that I will love this. I hadn't even planned on getting the remote, but I may reconsider that decision after seeing it in action in this video. I love that they're using aluminum parts instead of plastic. It makes that 50 dollar price tag seem a bit more reasonable. Also, as for cutting my cable; I already did that years ago. I primarily just use my computer or a game console's apps for my TV viewing now.
"The purpose of the Android TV ecosystem is for TV apps/experience" - which will be its downfall. Everything under the sun already does that - that can't be the "selling point" or point of excuse for lack of other features when almost every device out now can pop Netflix and Hulu on your TV :/
EposVox It's the first one that can stream 4k video. Also you get the bonus of being able to play PC games on it. Not to mention you can just throw Kodi on it and get unlimited new movies for free. I have a Nexus Player right now and this thing dumpsters it as far as specs go.
EposVox Android TV in 4k is a bonus. The purpose of this is GRID, its suppose to be Netflix for gaming. 1080 60fps by the way. No console does that but this.
MrUnohoo420 You have to consider what content this is running at 4k or 1080p 60FPS. The graphics in Android games are faaaaar inferior to the other consoles. but having even the output of 4k@60 is a good feature, don't get me wrong.
2 different game "streaming" methods mentioned here - which has nothing to do with "live streaming" which is what people typically think of when they hear "game streaming" - which is why people get confused. You can either stream your PC games over the network (via a NVIDIA GPU-powered PC, yes) which really just sends a video signal to the device, OR You can stream the entire game via the internet to the device. 2 separate platforms and they're going to be used for different games to some degree.
Can you sideload apk files on to this thing? I mostly just wanted to use it as a home emulator station. I could play Legend of Dragoon on this shield console, automatically sync the savestate data to my dropbox account via the app dropsync, leave the house, sync the newly uploaded savestate file to my phone and continue playing my RPGs on the go while waiting in line.
It'll make a fantastic emulator station if emulators begin to support google TV. As of yet I know of none. I have the shield tablet and portable and any emulators on the google store will run perfectly in 1080p on either of those, but honestly unless you wanna hold out for all the emulators supporting google TV I'd just get the shield tablet and hook it up to a TV. Does the same job but gets support of the full app ecosystem.
Anthony Campos why not get Raspbery Pi2 or Odroid C1... maybe even some of the more powerful models. it will be cheaper, and you could do the emulation just fine as far as i know. the C1 can run standard android kitkat so every app you want. but i suggest researching
TheSuperhaugen A game console + TV is about 150ms for offline singleplayer. This is in the 70's + internet ping and TV latency for grid. From your PC it beats a console so long as your router has QOS for wifi and enough bandwidth. They have a list of routers they've tested.
+TheSuperhaugen What about it you wire it? With the Shield Tablet and Portable, you were restricted to WiFi. Part of me thinks that when you wire it the latency will be pretty much non existent.
Dimitri, A "few months later" type video for your thoughts on how it performs in the long run or even how the support for more games is coming along would be awesome and, I think, very useful for tons of people. Thats the first TV box that seems interesting to me, thanks!
+SunSon29 You should still get this. It's on sale for black friday and it comes with a free remote. It's much faster than a smart tv or any others like the apple tv.
Really useful review. I have the excellent Shield Tab already and a! very drawn to getting this TV as an additional. Good warnings on compatibility issues with some features, although I understand it may be different in UK for many of these...perhaps worse, but yeah, looking good. Honest stuff. Thanks guys.
Ngreedia bashes consoles, then launches one ^^ The demographic for this thing?. Someone who can afford a 4k TV, but somehow not a 4k PC, who wants to stream 1080p with input lag to that 4k TV with a monthly fee, still pay full price for all games while Shield offers no exclusives like a console, has 50mbps recommended internet for 1080p, and who seems to be oblivious to Steam's new streaming device that would do the same thing from a Gaming PC for much cheaper, with better input lag and no monthly fee.
Nick Rodrigez well you could say the same for Apple TV to be honest, it's prices vs what it does isn't appealing, but somehow it has a market. The Shield does however show a lot of potential for it's price, agreed the streaming model is garbage. But 4k video output and high end console gaming for 200 is a sweet deal.
***** But the 360 is nearly 10 year old technology now. It doesn't hold up in terms of graphics, features, or usability. If you want to play modern games I would think the Shield Android TV offers much more to you than the 360 does. Not the 360 wasn't a fantastic console, in my opinion it literally set the stage for what modern gaming has become, but it's also old and outdated now.
ninja2566Well duh. 16GB of flash memory is found between 10 and 20 dollars at the store, and probably less that 10 dollars to make (which NVIDIA must have done or they got it cheap off Samsung or something). Meanwhile, I highly doubt NVIDIA can make hard drives so they get it off another company like Seagate, Hitachi, Toshiba or Western Digital for at least 50 to 75 bucks (small form factor drives are more expensive) and they make their profit of 25-50 dollars. It TOTALLY makes sense. -_- P.S. Then again, the hard drives could be cheaper than that, but they still don't make it themselves and it is more than double or triple of what a 16 flash memory chip is, so yeah...logic and profit.
Zuhayr Sarker lol you have an insanely deluded concept of hardware pricing. If Nvidia were paying 50-75 dollars for a 500gb hard drive, they'd be the stupidest company in existence, You can get them retail for that price. You know manufacturers pay wholesale prices right?
Chronofusion Because the Wii U has good games. If you are going to play pc games, do it on a monitor. I can't imagine playing cs:go on a tv unless you want to handicap yourself big time.
Barack Lasagna This will gamestream PC games to your TV like the shield tablet. This is also targetted at TV users/cord cutters. So it's not directly made for hardcore gamers.
Barack Lasagna This is over 4x more powerful than the Xbox 360 and can stream PC titles at full graphic capabilities ie Crysis 3 etc. It is a beast and more of an all in one system vs anything else out there and WAY cheaper.
***** to be fair, nintendo does have the best exclusives out of any console or pc right now. they may not have the best graphics, and their family friendly theme makes me want to puke, but the games that they have are actually original
I was thinking about opening it up and inserting my own hard drive into the 16gb version. Now I know not to bother and will keep my warranty instead. Thanks for showing the inside of the box.
Awesome review. Hit all the key points. Has there been any hack or work around for getting all android apps/games to work on android TV devices? I won't buy the shield console until then.
I'd really like to hear more about the GRID premium streaming service that they touted. I want to know prices and how smooth it runs. The one that allows you to play newly released games.
Got one of these last week and I pretty much agree with this review. It's a great device but the lack of apps makes it like a 7/10 instead of a 10/10 for me. I was able to sideload all of my important apps via sdcard. Most apps work great as long as you have a mouse attached. The game streaming works fine, but the input lag makes it less enjoyable. Streaming from a local PC is amazing when it works, but anything out of the ordinary on the host PC(steam pop-ups, uplay, etc) will cause it to crash or disconnect. Right now its a little bit of a disappointment, but I can see it being really great once they iron out a couple of issues.
Great review. I have ordered one of these boxes, the 16GB version, because I hope to expand storage with a 64GB micro SD card. I have a GTX 970 in my PC, so I'm hoping to get some good in-home streaming as well. My PC games on my TV without spending another $800+ for a second gaming PC. I know Steam Link is coming, but this seems to have a lot of extra uses as well. Very excited for it.
Hope to see the older Shield devices being given the upgrades they deserve. I'm not really into the idea of the console, I'd be more into the tablet...
Thanks - this was a really excellent review. :) I bought the Nexus Player when it first released but returned it because it was complete garbage. The remote barely worked. Yesterday I pre-ordered the NVIDIA Shield 500gb Pro version. I have really high hopes and hope I won't be disappointed. btw, Plex on the Nexus Player was horrible, the video was washed out and grainy on HD files. If you use Plex, can you let me know how you find the video quality on the Shield? I'm hoping it is as good as my Roku. Thanks again!
Thomas Veith Hope you enjoy your new SHIELD. Let us know how you like Android TV once you get it. There are MANY updates coming your way and we for sure will make a follow up video on where Android TV stands in upcoming weeks.
A year and change later, how does the Shield hold up? Now that Plex has committed to a dedicated Shield build and such high praise, is it now an even more viable cord-cutting option - considering that Kodi is also present and well represented?
so in the fairly near future we will be able to have a really strong computer somewhere in the house to do the main computing and a bunch of smaller cheaper devices to broadcast to .... the future looks awesome
I purchased a Tronsmart Vega S89-H (Cortex-A9 Amlogic S802-H Quad Core CPU, Up to 2.0Ghz, Mali-450 Octa Core GPU, 2G/16G memory) that comes complete with Kodi and have had a wonderful experience. It came with KitKat and is 4K capable. It only cost me $125.00 new (6 months ago) and plays every google/android app so far. Kodi is quite responsive and integrates well with apps outside its own program including games and emulators. I watched this review and this device looks very constricting. The first thing I would compelled to do is install a new OS.
This just sold me on the 980ti. I was waiting to see what the 300 series was bringing to the table but they can't stream my pc games. Damn. Good job Nvidia
i have 2 small gripes. 1. you asked for it to show you temp in Celsius. but it showed you Fahrenheit. what's the point of asking for one if its just going to only tell you in voice. 2. 4k seems a bit unnecessary as their just isn't enough content for 4k.
Excellent Review, but no Chrome or Firefox Browser = no Sale for me. Maybe in the future they'll add support for these apps, but until then I'll wait. Also Nvidia Shield GRID is in BETA and will become a Subscription Service in July as far as I remember.
Thanks for the nice review. Is this box support full 1080p and 4k resolution for RUclips streaming through youtube app? Does this box support 3D video playback? Can we download most of the apps like mobile android devices from google play? How is the xbmc and vlc apps performance for the 4K and 1080p videos through the HDMI port which I believe is 4K native? Thanks for your help.
I hope Nvidia pays you, because I am buying one of these things when I get paid, 100% based off this awesome review. I am a proud owner of the Shield portable, and it gets the job done as far as Steam in home streaming goes (playing Skyrim in bed is fun!), but this looks like an entirely different experience, and one that my Apple TV just isn't capable of delivering. It is a good time to be alive, all things considered! Thanks for the review!

HardwareCanucks I noticed a couple of software updates on the shield site since this video was posted. Any significant changes to report?

Awesome I will
Bit confused at 5:54 because you asked for weather in Celsius but it showed it in Fahrenheit.
He probably didn't set it in the app as Celsius for his preference.
SearchAshPile Android's search result was in Fahrenheit but the audible result was in Celsius.
Greyghostvol1 that's why SearchAshPile wrote ''it showed'', not it ''said''.
Actually 64 degrees Fahrenheit is only 17.8 degrees Celsius so it got it completely wrong.
Great Review even 2 years later! The best one on RUclips.
Thanks!
Next year they will release the shield desktop an later the shield supercomputer
Leandro Amarillo Shield desktop, also known as a GTX 980.

You guys always make some of the best tech videos in RUclips! Anyway, i'm still happy with my Nvidia Shield Portable. :)
299$ for 500gb might as well forget the 16gb
NonsensicalSpudz Would you really use 500 gigs tho? That's my main thinking. 16 gig with a 64 gig sd card should be more than enough imho.
IAmTheGreatBenjie If you don't use your Android TV as a central content storage, then I guess you'd probably not need 500GB
IAmTheGreatBenjie yes i agree it is a bit much but consider its only 100 more its a pretty good deal for a android device
NonsensicalSpudz I'm just not sure what I would put into all that storage XD
IAmTheGreatBenjie all the stuff
One of the best videos I ever saw on this channel, congratulations.
Even PC is better at being console than console.
Lol, tru
GTX 1080 I love you.
Octavia Melody Wtf
GTX 1080 Oh I thought you were a GTX 1080 my bad.
Octavia Melody My sister is one...
That TV is huge :O The device seems to run really smooth and seamless, can wait to get my hands on it! :)
64 Celsius?! Where do you live, Sahara Desert?
La Maestro this is america, we're way more backward
La Maestro No it says what it is in Celsius but it shows what it is in Fahrenheit. 64 Fahrenheit is about 17 Celsius.
With every new video I'm still impressed by your b-roll
I like how the clock in the picture says 1337.
MinkiGamer John thought I was the only one to notice.
It's in military time or 24hour time
Tony Sandoval what they mean is that 1337 can be read as leet which is a term for elite.
it is european time too :)
What's special about 1337?
Great review, man. I just ordered one of these last night. It should be arriving some time tomorrow. I've been using the handheld for about a little over a year now, and have not been disappointed. So I have no doubt that I will love this.

EQWoody if you have an nvidia pc.. Which is lame to limit ppl like that, cause it's completely possible to stream regardless of gpu.

Anthony Campos Yeah I just need to make sure I can put Kodi on before I buy.

What kind of TV is this?
Danny Perski wondering aswell :L
Danny Perski I recommend the high end Sony Bravia XBR models they are still unbeatable with the full array local dimming and insane contrast ratio.
Danny Perski They reviewed it, go check it out.
Danny Perski Samsung UN65JS8500 65IN SUHD 4K Quantum Dot Peak Illuminator Pro 3D LED TV :D
what kind of games are the Nvidia ones?? Somehow streaming from a Windows PC??
What about streaming games from PC? How well does it perform?
José Luís Lopes that depends on your router. Should not be more than 5-10 ms
Moyukh Shabon it is a lot more than that probably 50 to 100.
TheSuperhaugen A game console + TV is about 150ms for offline singleplayer. This is in the 70's + internet ping and TV latency for grid.
From your PC it beats a console so long as your router has QOS for wifi and enough bandwidth. They have a list of routers they've tested.

Blizz County QOS is quite common on routers for wired connection. I have QOS on my wireless connection so I'm good.
This is the best video review i've seen.
Keep it UP and thnx for sharing ;)
So basically you can only use netfilx on this because nothing works on it.
Priimerra After Google I/O, it seems Android TV will be receiving lots of updates in the near future, bringing many more apps for TV viewing.
Anyone noticed the time was on 13:37 on the box?
The NVIDIA Shield is such a sexy device. Does anyone know if it supports DLNA?
Dimitri,
A "few months later" type video for your thoughts on how it performs in the long run or even how the support for more games is coming along would be awesome and, I think, very useful for tons of people. Thats the first TV box that seems interesting to me, thanks!

$100 more for an upgrade from 16gb to 500gb lol

Can't wait to buy this! And Under 301 Club!
me 2
Shadow Bullet Under 246 club for me.
Does the tv still need to have hdcp 2.2 to play netflix in 4k?
watching the video in 4k was awesome!
I wish all videos had 4K
honestly though this is what i'm most hyped for in terms of new tech this year!
Use a touch screen monitor for full android support in apps and full shield support in games.
Whoa, what computer chair was that shown briefly? I want it!
A year and change later, how does the Shield hold up? Now that Plex has committed to a dedicated
Shield build and such high praise, is it now an even more viable cord-cutting option - considering that Kodi is also present and well represented?
so in the fairly near future we will be able to have a really strong computer somewhere in the house to do the main computing and a bunch of smaller cheaper devices to broadcast to .... the future looks awesome
Just get an Ugoos UT3 Android box. It also supports 4k at 60 fps and it does not have the app limitations mentioned in this video.
If they do a nvidia shield tablet with the tegra x1 I would buy that in a heart beat!
Jacobl910 Same!
Does Android TV also work with app`s like Popcorn time and other app that ar not available in the play store
what's the song at 8:50 ?
Sweet Cinematography.
can mobdro be installed on this?
Great review.I would buy this device
I'm not even intersted in this but damn, i can only repeat myself: I enjoy these videos.. That editing, the music... Something's wrong in my life. xD
This just sold me on the 980ti. I was waiting to see what the 300 series was bringing to the table but they can't stream my pc games. Damn. Good job Nvidia
Love it, i currently use an old Xperia S with bluetooth mouse & keybord to make my Tv smarter. but the Shield is diffidently amazing
i have 2 small gripes.
1. you asked for it to show you temp in Celsius. but it showed you Fahrenheit. what's the point of asking for one if its just going to only tell you in voice.
2. 4k seems a bit unnecessary as their just isn't enough content for 4k.
So can I play Steam on this?
Great review!very explained
Thanks so much for sharing appreciate it Deb 👌👍
Good review! 👍
great review .. can you install Untrusted/Unknown Sources apps from pen drive ?
Great video as always but where can I actually buy one of these from in Canada?
i am not a TV person but i love my Shield Portable, easy to use and great build quality so i am sure this will be nice too
Can you change the hard drive on the 500GB model? Putting a 1TB SSD (or something) could be usefull.
Excellent Review, but no Chrome or Firefox Browser = no Sale for me.
Maybe in the future they'll add support for these apps, but until then I'll wait.
Also Nvidia Shield GRID is in BETA and will become a Subscription Service in July as far as I remember.
you can download non tv games but you have to do it from the play store webpage and select the shield tv
I've noticed a white mark on ever shield console..almost a scratch. Even mine had it wonder if that a manufacture error.
Woow looks nice! HardwareCanucks
Great review :)
