I find it interesting how this law, and others like it, make it seem like the women in question never have any agency or choice in the situation. I suppose that is in part due to how women were viewed back when the law was written, but putting a woman running off to elope, take a job, or spend time with an illicit lover in the same category as a woman being trafficked just seems insulting and infantilising to me. Then again, that was probably the point at the time.

The newest potential use of the Mann Act will involve transporting women across state lines to receive abortions. I generally believe that abortion should be illegal, but I oppose the use of the Mann Act in this way. To make things worse, this kind of prosecution will never be consistent. Some federal prosecutors are going to see this as a legitimate tactic and others will not.

I'm afraid that this will be the case. That when women, or worse, young girls are in need of an abortion because their life is in danger, this will be used as another legal weapon against them.

I used to work for a quasi law enforcement outfit. At an airport I saw two different situations that couldn’t have been normal and looked very much like trafficking. I reported it. LE did nothing.
