I remember one tech review site did a Vulkan benchmark with Doom, the A12 outperformed the ryzen 2200g on maximum fps, the lows were bad though. Just a fun fact.
RandomGaminginHD Very important for that to happen is to have dual ranked DDR4-2400 with low timings. Tested that myself and on medium this chip can run Doom at slightly over 60fps at 1080
I've owned one of these little guys (9800) for quite a while now and it's a mixed bag. Paired with a Sapphire R7 370 4GB card and it doesn't do bad at all albeit having 4 cores and a boost clock of 4.2GHz. But when switching to the iGPU itself is when it gets a bit dicey on games. The iGPU can *barely* play Warframe (which is not demanding by all means) at 768p with high settings but with MASSIVE amounts of stutter for a solid 4-6 minutes before fully smoothing out. When in more dense areas, the frame rate plummets to around low 30s to even teens sometimes. Even in Paladins with maximum settings at again, 720p, it barely maintains 40 fps. What holds this APU back is the CPU die itself... it's a MASSIVE bottleneck on the graphics chip. I want to get a 2200G but can't afford one right now so it's all I got for the moment being.
@@joaonada42 That's a hell of a deal for a 2200G for only $60. The cheapest I could find one was for 70$ and that sold like hotcakes. The thing was gone the same day it was listed. I was actually really sad about that. Lol!
I have an A8 7600, and I have the same peformance like you on paladins until I tried a single slot 8gb 2133 mhz ram, and now it runs at med/900p @ 50fps lows, 73fps avg.
@@Arnþor I try to. It's just sad. Hell, even with the dedicated 370 in there, Warframe still has MASSIVE stuttering problems for a solid 3 minutes or so while loading everything in. It's wise to literally not even touch the game while it does or you risk the game crashing like it did to me twice. Paladins isn't too bad with the chip and iGPU but even with both games at the ABSOLUTE lowest settings and 720p, they both still drop easily to mid 20's and sometimes even teens at certain times for no real known reason while playing. I don't know if it's because of the old architecture or something to do with the games themselves. Needless to say, I need a serious upgrade to Zen. Lol! Edit: I just remembered that when I had my Phenom II X6 1090T Warframe and Paladins NEVER had those stuttering issues at all and were as smooth as butter even when loading stuff in. That's extremely sad since the Phenom II X6 1090T, sure may have 6 physical cores but it's also 9 years old. The A12-9800 is really only 2 or 3...
@@lm_dccxl4078 That's weird to me as I have 2 2400MHz sticks, 16GB total and seem to maintain everything around 40-45 ish most of the time, sometimes hitting around 60 from time to time but with noticeable dips. I have both motherboard and APU up to date with drivers but.. it is what it is I guess.
@@HuntersMoon78 yeh the fx chips were decent. I have a 8370 myself. Will become collectors item one day ;). Its the lowend and mid range am3 chips that had trouble from my experience.
All of the Bulldozer based AM4 chips are not worth it AT ALL as the Athlon 200GE exists. It makes no sense even as a stop gap, since you can nab a Zen based APU which will beat all of them. Unless you can get the chips for less than £30 or under, it might make sense I suppose? But not really.
Pretty sure most of these got handed out by AMD to owners who bought motherboards which didn't support Ryzen 2000 series chips. Most of them have been used for a quick BIOS update and then put straight back in the box. It'd be fine as a cheap backup PC or HTPC, but thats about it.
@@basshead. Ehh. You can get a 200ge build for >$300 while going for an r9 380 or a 780, and still be on a new platform that can support juicy 16 core goodness.
I had a 5800k, OC'ed it to 4.9Ghz on all cores on a a68 motherboard, paired with a r9 290 OC'ed (+200 core + 350 vram) with some 1600mhz ddr3 (OC'ed to 2133Mhz). The system would draw up to 700watts while running furmark, otherwise it was fairly capable of running a lot of games, pubg ran at 60fps on high for example.
I had a 5800k, I bought it in 2013, and six months later I had to pair it with a gtx 660, because the integrated graphics were not enough for my needs back then. I mean, it was not bad when it was released but if you are a gamer wanting to play the new titles, an Off Board VGA is a must. Not sure about the new ryzen APUS, they look very good. Well, about the 5800k with the gtx 660, I used it until late 2017. Now I have a ryzen 5 1500x and a gtx 1060 but still keep the old 5800k as a secondary pc (I never use it but, there she is).
Even though these are DDR4 I think the A10-78xx / A10-7890K was the best one and this was before Ryzen when apu graphics was astonishing. Circa 2010-2015 The A10-7890 had strongest igpu. The reason I believe they keep selling for that price is because it is marketed as 10/12 core when builders on eBay try to sell them. Because they mislead you by counting the gpu cores as well. So because of that, they continue to sell. New users don't know and think it's a good build to buy. 200ge & 2200g are harder to sell as a builder as AMD didn't ever advertise saying 10 core processor or something dumb like that. So the A8/A10/A12 was sort of a scam product AMD put out. But because it had decent igpu for the time it made up for it. And even though single performance wasn't great. At the time a Quad Core 4.0-4.4Ghz + easy Overclocking made it at least ok when paired with dedicated graphics card. They were able to do medium/high on GTA V with GTX 1050 Ti
It always depends n what country you live and your desire to buy used parts or not, but getting am Athlon and a used dedicated gpu like a 750ti would have been a better choice of you wanted to get on the AM4 platform
@@stevesmith1383 in the states. They didn't sell many Athlon x4 on AM4. They priced it low and tried to pull an Intel on us (by running it dry, saying out of stock of raising price high on it). Thank God they have 200ge/2200g
Overclocking was opened for the Athlons with the iGPU still working. It pretty much killed the A series apu. Also, the 9800 and similar apu are pretty much on fire sales for a few months in my country, it can be found for roughly 40$ new, no joke
For $40 used I think it's pretty handy. Good toss around AM4 CPU for doing BIOS updates. Could be a cool tool for a hobbyist kit. Definitely it's a piece of shit for actually using as a daily driver, if you can't afford a 2200G minimum, might want to consider saving a bit longer.
I got the AMD A10-9700 in my £300 PC a few years ago. For the price I couldn't really complain, since it had 8gb ram and 2TB HDD. Processor isn't great, but gets the job done. on the graphics side, even CS:GO runs poorly (at least in my single channel memory set-up), unless you're happy with 30fps.
@@joaonada42 It is, but one apu i had (A10-6800K) did perform almost the same with only ONE stick of ram like it did with TWO, the reason was that it still had 128 bit bandwidth with only one stick(MB was a gigabyte X88). I dont know how and why that could happend because normaly you would only have 64 bit bandwidth in single channel
I was coincidentally watching some of your old videos when the notification popped up. Glad to see you by the way. By the way If you do decide to pin me I’m gonna cry of joy.
Jarrod Flint yes I thought it was ironic because I was already watching one of his videos when the notification popped up. The video I watched was also very old and focused around an old cpu, while this is one of his newer 2019 cpu related videos!
on ebay in america, i found the a12-9800 for $60 used. the 200ge is $55 new -_- if it was cheaper, i could see it being used to update b350 bios's to run newer ram and cpu's, but for that price its not even worth it for a pc builder. then again, the a6-9500 goes for $47 on ebay so.... i have no idea about this line on am4
Watching this vid on an a8 9600 xD, for basic usage and media center is fine, but when it come to gaming it is bad... Well for me is still a great value, since i paid it 5€ in a garage sale (mobo and 4gb of ram included).
In Brazil, hardware in general is very expensive and A12-9800 is an option. Obviously we have Ryzen here to, but too expensive. Do you know about the overclock capabilities of this chip? I saw overclock only in Asus mobos in TechEpiphany but that channel already showed numbers very weird, so I need an opinion of a better channel like you. Which Mobo do I need to choose to overclock it?
I remember when Timmy Joe made a negative video of the A12 and his video's comments were flooded with people from poorer countries bashing him him. I think something similar happened with HardwareUnboxed.
Poor Steve from Hardware Unboxed really takes these kinds of comments quite hard, he really seems to value his viewers opinions and perception of his integrity. I can't watch TimmyJoe though lol... He's too all over the place for me
Very good video, love your APU comparisons. I would like to ask if you can make a comparison between this A12 or Athlod 200GE and an A8-7600K, as I built a PC based on this A8 like 3 years ago for 720P gaming mainly, and it performs really well till now, but I would love to see if selling it and making something based on this Athlon or some other budget processor can make a huge difference, or should I just add a budget GPU and go further this way. It could also show how much how much performance you gain for the generation because of DDR3 vs DDR4 and of course newer motherboard. Anyways, keep up your superb work and I hope to see more great videos as IMO you made a huge progress for last 2 years! :)
I was wondering how the 9800 compared to the others, specifically the 200GE. I've used the 9700, got it for just over £26 (second hand, no fan) last year. It's fine for all the minor tasks it's been used for, and I no longer game so don't need anything brilliant. It's not too far off the 9800, which as this shows isn't far off the 200GE in multithreaded workloads, which is the important thing these days. 4 reasonable threads mean a light-medium work load is covered nicely. I saw a chart on some website before which plotted the IPC improvements of the Bulldozer family with every iteration against the Intel ones since Nehalem. This was pre Ryzen, pre Bristol Ridge, and I think it was Carrizo which was shown to be close to Nehalem in IPC. Given that Bristol Ridge is a further evolution of that architecture, the 9800 must be very competitive with the first gen i5s I would suspect. If that suits you, and you can get one for a good price, then it is a worthwhile chip, just not for gaming. Also, it provides a platform with a real upgrade path.
I have hi end crt monitor but it don’t work with new cards instead of changing monitor I want to change card because nothing in Monitor’s can match eizo with 720p 160hz or 1080p 100hz What card should I get instead of 1080gtx
Kinda funny that one of my favorite RUclipsrs finally reviewed the A series APUs from AMD. The first computer I ever bought was an A10-6700 APU, and right now 'looks to my right', I'm still using one after all this time. I do kinda similar to what you and many other people with used tech do. I build computers and sell them:) It's cheap to buy used parts. Have fun building them. And, sell for a good cheap price too, so then somebody else might have a good pc too. Best hobby to have. Through all of those builds. I still own this A10-6700. Now based off the A10-6700 and my brother's and my experiences, it's similar to the 1st "i" Intel Generation. Anybody can apply this to any of the other A-Series APUs. The A10-6700 exact equivalent is the i5-650. So, as long as I applied this A10-6700 equals the i5-650, then I really have never been disappointed. The highest GPU yield it can hold before bottlenecking was also my ASUS Strix GTX 970 which was also extremely factory overcooked. Now, never use it's graphics built into the APU though. Unlike Ryzen, the A-Series built in graphics don't even hold up well enough to even play 720p videos on RUclips(yeah, it's that bad!) But, I bought this long ago at the only tech store in a hundred miles, Best Buy.(I know, Best Buy, but I live in the southeastern part of the United States coined as "The South" and I live on country roads on farmland. So, I live in one of the least tech savvy or media influenced part of the U.S. which makes me happy that I can bring more pc gamers into here by building:) ) I got it for $150. The guy at Best Buy was cool though. Cause, he wanted to sell it to me as cheap as possible. It went for $800, but it was open box and he hid it for a long time in order to demoralize the price long enough to send the price to $300. Then he used as many coupons and sales during Black Friday when I finally bought it. Great guy:) Anywho, I'm still using this. In fact, I gamed on the lowest settings at 1080p the Halo: Forge Online(on Microsoft Store for free!) It has a Corsair CX650M with a ASUS GTX 560Ti 2gb, 240gb SSD, and 1x8gb DDR3 1600mhz ram. I'm surprised by it performance still and enjoy it for mainly two reasons. 1.) I honestly only use the PC to play games every now and then, but mostly watch movies and videos as a daily PC. Most games are Indie cause its what I'm into, and graphically intensive games are mostly fun to watch(why I watch alot of RUclips) but not really fun go play most of the time for me except for some like the new Doom or Halo as of yesterday. 2.) I can't sell this PC. Funny, I can sell any PC and most will buy. But, as many watch this and it's true, you shouldn't buy this PC. I've even put it up for $80, and the negativity is amazing to this A-Series APU. Not that I'm saying people have yelled at me or left some weird comment, more over people just really don't want this. Hahaha:D But, seriously, I completely understand that this PC is not that special in most tasks. But, for me, this is all I need. I'm just so happy you reviewed this PC. So, if anybody wants to build or buy a PC around the A-Series APUs, then check prices to make sure that your spending only as much as a 1st "i" Intel Generation PC Build. In fact, one of the videos on this channel I believe titled "$150 PC Build", used a i5-750(4core/4thread) CPU. This would be similar if using an A10-7800 APU. Just always make sure that your prices and similar performance for you and your tasks for the computer you want to build:) Thanks for this video!
I can tell you first hand first gen Lynnfield core I chips are 30-40% faster than these chips at core parity, even the older AM2+ Propolis core Athlon II x4 chips were stronger CPUs (they also run significantly cooler than the A series APUs.) I vehemently disagree with your comment about the iGPU of the A series not being youtube capable, my friend has an a88 baord with a A10 apu and his iGPU has zero issues at 1080p60 on youtube, My Athlon II in the other room is sitting in a 785G main board using the on board HD4200 and it has no trouble with RUclips 1080p60. Even the weakest A-series iGPU is significantly faster than the 4200.
Benjamin Hale I believe you too. It's just strange for my A10-6700 I believe. It's capability as an APU for me was just awful. Maybe something bad happened to it in the lottery. However, in a strange way, I've managed to get a 4.7 GHz overclock on it. Of course, I run it at 4.1GHz now because of years of use. Maybe it's just my experience with a strange processor on this chipset. But, yeah. I believe every Intel chipset is built way better. And, usually last way longer than AMD. I mean Intel has always been the powerhouse chipsets to me. The i5-650 on 3.8GHz with an GTX 750ti 2gb(customer's build) from my experience gave an advantage in the gaming aspect, yet in my case it was only by 3%. I tested it against my A10-6700 during that time with a 4.2GHz clock with the GTX 560ti 2gb as I said before. But, your right. When it came to stock speeds of i5-650 vs. A10-6700, there was a 9% difference. When this happened back in November 2016, I just thought most A-Series APUs scaled with the 1st "i" Intel Generation CPUs when it came to Core/Thread count with Overclocking in mind. Yet, it seems that most people(especially people I meet or people who tell me such as yourself) have a much different experience with these. Reminds me of a customer's build who wanted a X58 platform. Everybody else described how there experience was amazing on thee chipsets when overclocked, yet even at 4.4GHz the x5680 I was using first was so awful that I got another CPU. But, then the x5660 ran even better when overclocked to 4.1GHz. I usually never have that experience, but it showed me some strange things come up and sometimes I honestly don't know why. Now, I definitely believe somebody else would have figured it out. But, if my three friends, the customer, and I couldn't figure it out. Then to me it was just a bad processor. Anywho, thanks for the info. I guess I'll look more into it.
i have a a10 5800b apu fm2 socket chip paired with a gtx 670 2gb gpu and get way better fps in overwatch at 1080p like high 70-80's in fights and 100-120 while in map. didn't spend much on it and i can even run overwatch at 4k maxing out my tv 70 hertz setting thanks to my gpu. overall happy with system spend under 280 and games more demanding games, like monster hunter, at 30 fps on mediums settings. still beating a stand alone am4 apu anyday
The real question I have for my fellow nerds is... I'm upgrading my back up pc and I wanna get the cheapest possible AM4 cpu (to get on the platform, it'll be a placeholder until I get an ryzen 5 or 7) but the performance has to be at least as good as an fx 8350 or better... which one? I feel like I might have to go all the way up to ryzen 3 at least.. or just keep letting my mobo sit and collect dust until I get enough squared away for the r7 that will eventually go in there. lol
lol, all the way "UP" to a Ryzen 3. That's the first Ryzen. Honestly you can probably grab a used Ryzen 3 1200 for $60 and then sell it again when you upgrade to recoup most of the value. But buying new the answer is easy. If you want to spend the least amount of $$$ and not get crap, you want the Athlon 200ge.
I have two factory super over clocked, flagship gtx 580 3gb variants from Point of View. I'd love to get in contact with you and work something out since i've been holding on to them for someone like you who would appreciate it for what it was. Gonna copy paste and hope you see.
Well there would be a time that it would make more sense to get an athalon like this one. Obviously amd's not making much if any of these quad core apu's. But the price will go down, and when it does they will lose money, but they need to get rid of old stock. But the price will go down before ryzen 3, so that would be a good time to get into the am4 paltform
Mhh now I wonder how would hte integrated Vega 8 Graphics from the 2200G compare to the mobile Vega 8 form the R5 2500u/3500u. Just because they have they same name and supposedly the graphics clock is the same. But I guess the power setup and cooling would probably limit the mobile version in boost duration? That might be an interesting test if you somehow could get one of those AMD Laptops for Testing.
Hey dude, just wanted to mention, I bought an rtx 2080ti a month ago and it has stopped working so im getting a replacement sent in 45 days, to tide me over i bought cheap gpu just so i could play games, in Cex i grabbed a r9 280x and I'm super impressed with the performance for £80 it performs pretty great price to performance wise! Might be worth a look since you're looking at building more pc's this year
In december i brought one second hand as a place holder till i buy the Ryzen 2600/2700 (yes i got it dirt cheap) but in Australia a12 9700 will set you back $100 new and a 2200g is currently $160 (jan 2019)
Im using a a1 0770k @ 4.0ghz with a gtx 660. cine-bench score multi :330. Can push it to 4.2 but id rather not. overall a decent cpu but does max out often on AAA titles. Its roughly equivalent to many i5s.

What GoldVillage is saying is important and that is for APUs ram speed and dual channel are important to get the most performance out of them. Do you have 1 stick of ram or 2 sticks @Broken Umar and how fast is the ram?
The biggest problem with these excavator parts is the really poor amount of cache.... only 1MB L2 cache makes this basically useless for many tasks especially multi-tasking. The only thing these should be used for is content consumption and web browsing, otherwise you are basically guaranteed to have stutter.
The a12 was fine, although poor performing, if you wanted an APU build before the Ryzen APUs came out. But now with the 200ge, it would be insane to order it.
I am currently on a12-9800 and it serves me well with paired r9 390 8gb! It does the job even in withcer 3 ultra I get 60fps so how does that sound? By the way I bought It on launch so its okay?!
I mean...ok. you are using it as just a cpu. Not an APU. Which you could have done just as easilly with a quad core Athlon of half the price Did you buy the A12 to serve as an APU while you saved for a gpu? You don't even need an AM4 build for that. You could just use an AM3+ fx 6300 or something paired with a gpu amd actually get better results In terms of single core and multi core, my spare pc using a Phenom 2 1055t ocd to 3.5ghz gets better results on cinebench with DDR2 ram
@@stiffybeanie4148 ok, and ryzen has been out for a while. What are you waiting for? Cost wise, you would have been better off buying a cheap used build, selling that now. And buying a ryzen build now. Ddr4 prices have dropped alot. Gpu prices have dropped. Ryzen prices have dropped etc etc. I don't think you save any $$$ in getting the A12 and expensive ddr4 ram at launch to get on the AM4 platform
I considered buying AMD around 7-8 years ago but ended up with an Intel i3 3225 and then a Pentium G4400. Looking back at it now I don't think I made a mistake.
I never understood the point of the 4 core Vishera and Excavator chips in general, the APUs less so, they really made no sense. With the 8 cores like the 8350 they were damn good at streaming and capturing gameplay as the recording or streaming could be done by the extra threads without impacting gameplay (that is what I use my FX-8320e for, stays cool even in the summer and paired with an R9 380x I get 100 FPS while capturing 1080p 30 FPS) but the quad core CPUs and APUs? You'd have been better off with an i3 or low end i5. These aren't even useful for a low end HTPC build as you can get a socket FM2 setup with quad core APU and board for like $75 on eBay so...yeah really pointless.
Interestingly a Haswell i3 would probably outperform it nowadays. I managed to get a i3 system with 750ti for less than £190. So I can't complain about price.
My laptop came with an A10 processor. I love it. It is good for older games and light modern gaming. You could get an older AM3 motherboard with cheap DDR3 ram and an A10 and make a nice little gaming system.
Im still using the Athlon 200ge while earning some money to buy ryzen 5 and Im lucky AMD's upcoming next generation ryzen still using AM4 sockets. Im about to buy Ryzen 5 next month but then I decided to wait for next generation ryzen. Let see if my hard earned $150 can afford the next gen ryzen
I think it's that expensive because only few shops still have it and most bigger stores have automatized their prices. Personally, I own a prebuild PC with a A10 7800, which I got for free because it's HDD broke and Windows 10 wouldn't activate on a SSD, so it was cheaper to buy a used System with Windows Key because the previous owner didn't want a Key from eBay etc. I think those Systems might be OK for Games like LOL and stuff, but really I wouldn't want to use them for anything more than office work or watching videos...
i regret so much buying the athlon 200ge, because it really sucks on entrance level motherboards i have a b350 motherboard and the a8 9600 AMD sent me from their bootkit runs better than the athlon 200ge so for the 200ge to work properly, its safer get a b450 "3000 ready" which is a bit more expensive the athlon 200ge was released after the ryzen 2000 series, closer to the 3000, that means older am4 chipsets may have problems with it
for what platform and country? the best config is the one you find at the best price used lol if we are talking new parts, I guess the 2200g, it's got decent intel haswell quad core performance and it's on board graphics are like that of a gt 1030 and depending on where you are it can be pretty cheap.
Certainly nothing to complain about from this video. The A12 came far too late and its price never dropped enough, especially when Ryzen launched. The integrated GPU was a good overclocker, which was also the case for the A10-7890K. I think the 7890K was the peak from the whole APU saga. Paired with an RX 460, it was more than acceptable. The 7890K can also be bought second-hand for far less as well. You'll notice there aren't any A12s on eBay, for example.
As a Cheap to Mid Range PC Builder and Repair Guy like me, your vids help a lot. Take your time decluttering and unwind as you will, greetings here from the Poor Country of Philippines! Mabuhay RandomGaminginHD!
As much as i like AMD, and their A series APU's I have to agree this one is not a great value, a used A-10 5800k turbo boosted 4.4Ghz with 16GB of DDR3 OC to 2133Mhz would be a better value, and you can add a GPU like a AMD RX 550 down the road, and get great driver support in both Windows 10, and Ubuntu based Linux Distros like Mint (Mate edition being my fav. and current daily).
I still cant believe they released bulldozer(and its iterations) on am4.I wonder how many cpu dies they have left and are they actively making them. The fact that they are only 4 core doesn't help either
the athlon 200ge is the better buy out of all three. Realistically speaking, the 2200g is only good when you are looking at the new market. With the fall of crypto, you can pick up r9 380's and gtx 780 gpu's regularly for around 60 bucks, which when combined with the 200ge at 3.8ghz is going to heavily outperform the 2200g for only about 13 or 14 more usd. And considering the 2200g is going to be a bottleneck in most titles with a gtx 1060 6gb or above, there is little reason to buy the 2200g for its more beefy cpu performance either. You would have to upgrade the cpu to add a new gpu anyways, so get a dedicated gpu with the 200ge, and you could even then run a second monitor for productivity off of the igpu with no gaming performance hit.
For league of legends competitive wich option you recommend? I know both can run it but wich would be better? I was going for 2220 build and i dont mind upgrading in 2-4 years. I will play other esports games like realm royale/fortnite etc but as casual. Buying used graphic cards i dont know if its reliable... i mean idk if a graphics card can die like a motherboard etc
@@KadiusFTW Ty im a newbie but ive been researching for a week before buy. Wich exact graphic card you recommend for those esport games that wont bottleneck this 50$cpu? And i mean exact brand and name+ vram since same name card has a lot different prices. Also if AMD cpus need dual channel maybe with 2gvram card i will be okay? I dont know if what i said makes sense
@@jaab5594 So, anything below the performance of a Gtx 1070 would work, due to the relative cpu performance. So think r9 380, r9 285, rx 470/570/480/580, or a gtx 760 ti, 770, 780, 780 ti, 960, 970, 980, 1050 ti. Vram should not be an issue for 1080p gaming as long as it is 2gb or more vram. Just try and look for the gpu on the used market, and one with a reputable brand on it, such as asus, gigabyte, Xfx, saphire, and so on. Now to approach your issue with vram, vram isnt the same as dimm ram memory. Basically, you will want whatever memory you get for this processor to be split into two sticks, such as 2x 4gb or 2x 8gb and so on. And vram is a graphics cards installed memory. The reason you want two sticks of memory is similar to having two people running back and forth as messengers in comparison to one.
my wife has an amd 9700p 6gb ram, 1tb hdd laptop. it was 300$, but i feel so bad for it now because i bought a gigabyte aero 15x a few months ago, and then spent as much on her laptop as i did for a ssd i added to it. so her laptop= 300$ my laptop= 3000$ on the bright side, i definitely use mine 10x more
I am here to defend the A12, but I realize “if you buy the Athlon and use the 20~30 dollars difference to upgrade the cooling system of your case, overclock the Athlon and you can have better performance in ALL scenarios”.
In hindsight this CPU would be a good buy, if u predicted ryzen. If u wanted a low end cpu, and ryzen motherboards would ahve given u a great upgrade path. Sell the CPU there are plenty pre Ryzen and zombies like my cousin who built a used and system in summer 2017
Right but there was a period of a few months that you could have built a gaming PC, without knowing about ryzen. Also you could technically build a 4K gaming PC with this CPU, as long as you don't mind playing at low settings and ignoring all games that are cpu-intensive. Regardless you you should still get good frame rates with a good graphics card and this CPU. obviously I'm not recommending you buy one today I'm just saying for that small sliver of time that this was the only thing available for the am-4 platform it would have been a good decision.
@@ryanwakebradtelle8682 How could you not know about Ryzen? it was everywhere. Who buys tech on release date not realizing they have to wait a bit to get decent Ryzen cpus? if someone is buying an AM4 motherboard in late 2016, they know about Ryzen at least if they are building one. If they walked into a best buy and got tricked into buying one, that's another story
If you had to build a gaming PC between September 2016 and February 2017, and you got a head start on the ryzen rumors because it was until mid-January before ryzen was being heavily speculated. All I'm saying is if you had to build a gaming PC right then, it wouldn't be the worst idea ever
@@ryanwakebradtelle8682 ok in that case it would have made sense to go with the non APU Athlons if you just really really needed to get on the AM4 platform immediately. And since the first batch of Ryzen's were not APUs, you would need a dedicated GPU anyway, so it made more sense to grab the quad core Athlon and a dedicated GPU and then wait for the Ryzen cpus. This really only makes sense in countries with shit pc prices like Brazil, or people who were in the weird sceneraio of wanting to get onto AM4 for he hell of it and not waiting the extra few months for Ryzen, but not having the cash to buy a gpu or something. In which case....why are you getting newly released hardware, go the used route.

Only main use of 9800 is to update a AM4 board to run a 2000 series or soon to be 3000 series chip.
Exactly, that's also the only thing which comes to my mind when thinking about an AM4 A-series APU.
It's my understanding AMD will send you a free CPU for that purpose. Is this the CPU/APU they send out?
No, they'll send you the absolute cheapest and slowest APU for the AM4 platform, namely the A6-9500.
And then if im correct you need to send the CPU back if I am correct @@dyter424 ?
tdek33 Yes, they want it back.
I remember one tech review site did a Vulkan benchmark with Doom, the A12 outperformed the ryzen 2200g on maximum fps, the lows were bad though. Just a fun fact.
Oh wow I'll have to see if I can find it
How? Lol
was that with the igpu's or using a discrete gpu?
RandomGaminginHD Very important for that to happen is to have dual ranked DDR4-2400 with low timings. Tested that myself and on medium this chip can run Doom at slightly over 60fps at 1080
@@118Shadow118 igpu ofc .
I'll give you major props since it sounds like you really tried to make it work.

@ come on man, it was a great story. Riveting
Random asked if we used to have a pre-ryzen apu, so here is what he asked for.
Yea those intel chips hold up so much better than anything AMD had pre Ryzen.
Dude, how. I know the GPU is drawing 250-300, but where's the other 400W coming from.
Even though these are DDR4 I think the A10-78xx / A10-7890K was the best one and this was before Ryzen when apu graphics was astonishing. Circa 2010-2015
The A10-7890 had strongest igpu.
I had to Amd a10 6700 paired with a Gtx 970 and that was the worst experience of my entire life

Very good video, love your APU comparisons.

I have hi end crt monitor but it don’t work with new cards instead of changing monitor I want to change card because nothing in Monitor’s can match eizo with 720p 160hz or 1080p 100hz

Unlike Ryzen, the A-Series built in graphics don't even hold up well enough to even play 720p videos on RUclips(yeah, it's that bad!)
But, I bought this long ago at the only tech store in a hundred miles, Best Buy.(I know, Best Buy, but I live in the southeastern part of the United States coined as "The South" and I live on country roads on farmland. Great guy:)
Anywho, I'm still using this.
Just always make sure that your prices and similar performance for you and your tasks for the computer you want to build:)
Thanks for this video!
he's done this line up of APUs before, just never the A12
I can tell you first hand first gen Lynnfield core I chips are 30-40% faster than these chips at core parity, even the older AM2+ Propolis core Athlon II x4 chips were stronger CPUs (they also run significantly cooler than the A series APUs.) I vehemently disagree with your comment about the iGPU of the A series not being youtube capable, my friend has an a88 baord with a A10 apu and his iGPU has zero issues at 1080p60 on youtube, My Athlon II in the other room is sitting in a 785G main board using the on board HD4200 and it has no trouble with RUclips 1080p60. Even the weakest A-series iGPU is significantly faster than the 4200.
Steve Smith Oh thank you. I'll check those videos out.
Here in Finland my favourite PC shop has still these, and 9800E costs 105 euros.

Might be worth a look since you're looking at building more pc's this year
Awesome! Great video as always!
When will you continue your PC in XBOX series?
In december i brought one second hand as a place holder till i buy the Ryzen 2600/2700 (yes i got it dirt cheap) but in Australia a12 9700 will set you back $100 new and a 2200g is currently $160 (jan 2019)
"of course not, don't be silly" RandomGamingHD, 2019.
Had a lot of fun with this one.
Im using a a1 0770k @ 4.0ghz with a gtx 660. cine-bench score multi :330. Can push it to 4.2 but id rather not. overall a decent cpu but does max out often on AAA titles. Its roughly equivalent to many i5s.
it's not equivalent to many i5s, maybe the firs gen, but any i5 sandy bridge or higher is more powerful
man i used a A10 6700 fm2+ socket,2013,from 2014 till last week(i5 4460+mobo 50% upgrade).was a awsome workhorse.swiched gpus from gtx650 2gb up to a r9 380 4gb.had to upgrade only because i got a mined rx480 oc wich is 40%minimum faster than the 380.loved that a10 buldozer,even if its a 2xdualcore,has a 4.3 boostclock,low tdp...considering theire underestimated,if you score a great deal used,they still are worth using.pretty decent snappiness,outruns a 3.3 q6600 perfectly tuned.its all about the price m8,performance for buck.i got a 20$ rig as a second pc,wich runs league of legends maxed out at 1440p minimums of 80fps,perfect for what i need it for,guests.
And I'm here suffering with a A8 5600k, 4gb ddr3 and a HD 6450 oc and runs Roblox at 30fps (which is capped at 60 fps)
The gpu of that apu is better than the HD6450... but you maybe only have one stick of ram then im not sure
What GoldVillage is saying is important and that is for APUs ram speed and dual channel are important to get the most performance out of them. Do you have 1 stick of ram or 2 sticks @Broken Umar and how fast is the ram?
You should bring back gta 5 in your games to test. Its still pretty cpu intensive
Those zen 2 apus are going to be amazing!
I think they just forgot they were still selling them, or they are doing the apple thing with the mac pro.
I am currently on a12-9800 and it serves me well with paired r9 390 8gb!
It does the job even in withcer 3 ultra I get 60fps so how does that sound?
By the way I bought It on launch so its okay?!
I mean...ok. you are using it as just a cpu. Not an APU. Which you could have done just as easilly with a quad core Athlon of half the price
Did you buy the A12 to serve as an APU while you saved for a gpu?
You don't even need an AM4 build for that. You could just use an AM3+ fx 6300 or something paired with a gpu amd actually get better results
In terms of single core and multi core, my spare pc using a Phenom 2 1055t ocd to 3.5ghz gets better results on cinebench with DDR2 ram
@ not really
@@stiffybeanie4148 you gpu runs at 100% usage?
@@stevesmith1383 yes but I planned for ryzen from the start!Ryzen is the reason why I'd choose this platform!
I have a8 7659k and i love it. Low temps, decent cnibenxh score of 400,good overclocking and runs anything i want it to
why are you running csgo on high settings, use the "pro" settings as i think they are the most used and the settings that make the most sense
I considered buying AMD around 7-8 years ago but ended up with an Intel i3 3225 and then a Pentium G4400. Looking back at it now I don't think I made a mistake.
i have a pentium dual core e6600 8 gb ddr3 ram and a gtx 960
can i do something with it? :))
why not just put a core 2 quad in? they are super cheap
CPR ON A CHICKEN NUGGET IM DEAD LMAO
Interestingly a Haswell i3 would probably outperform it nowadays. I managed to get a i3 system with 750ti for less than £190. So I can't complain about price.
I have one of these, but more for a collection of special parts. It’s the last and „fastest“ Bulldozer-based chip.
My laptop came with an A10 processor. I love it. It is good for older games and light modern gaming. You could get an older AM3 motherboard with cheap DDR3 ram and an A10 and make a nice little gaming system.
I have amd a-10 8700p in my laptop so yeah... but for 300€ now u can't still beat the price/performance really, or well at least 2y ago
Had to Google RHEL so see what it was - It's Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Picked up a whole system with A12 9800, 16GB RAM and 500GB SSD for $21. Thought it was fair for the price.
Let's just hope that bad press and wary consumers will bring down the price where it belongs. Sometimes it looks like sellers have no common sense.
i regret so much buying the athlon 200ge, because it really sucks on entrance level motherboards
i have a b350 motherboard and the a8 9600 AMD sent me from their bootkit runs better than the athlon 200ge
so for the 200ge to work properly, its safer get a b450 "3000 ready" which is a bit more expensive
the athlon 200ge was released after the ryzen 2000 series, closer to the 3000, that means older am4 chipsets may have problems with it
It's about time you bought a new camera.
If I remember well the A10 series was outperformed by the rare Broadwell series from Intel.
what is the best price/performance cheap config?
for what platform and country? the best config is the one you find at the best price used lol
if we are talking new parts, I guess the 2200g, it's got decent intel haswell quad core performance and it's on board graphics are like that of a gt 1030 and depending on where you are it can be pretty cheap.
@@bluescluessuperagent The 2200g is really impressive, but it's eq. to $140 here in Brazil. Thanks for the info.
@@mamupelu565 yeah.....Brazil throws all conventional wisdom out the window. I've heard the prices there are total trash
In my country those cpus aren't avelailable anymore.
Just got an A12-9800 on eBay for $20. Not a bad upgrade from the A6-8570
My favorite British dry humor tech channel....
how about the a8 9600?
Bruh u could go far a R3 1200 for around £70 in the UK, a R5 1400 for £100 or £90 for a R3 2200g
As a Cheap to Mid Range PC Builder and Repair Guy like me, your vids help a lot. Take your time decluttering and unwind as you will, greetings here from the Poor Country of Philippines! Mabuhay RandomGaminginHD!
Well on my country all "modern and new" hardware that can still run windows 7 is getting expensive. (not like the 200ge that only can run w10)
yeah but these were really meant for office market space weren't they
Awesome video as always
pricing is a fickle thing
As much as i like AMD, and their A series APU's I have to agree this one is not a great value, a used A-10 5800k turbo boosted 4.4Ghz with 16GB of DDR3 OC to 2133Mhz would be a better value, and you can add a GPU like a AMD RX 550 down the road, and get great driver support in both Windows 10, and Ubuntu based Linux Distros like Mint (Mate edition being my fav. and current daily).
You should've tryed the a10 9800k
I still cant believe they released bulldozer(and its iterations) on am4.I wonder how many cpu dies they have left and are they actively making them. The fact that they are only 4 core doesn't help either
Man, if you test csgo, please try out the lowest settings & full hd. Its what most people play it on nowadays.
the athlon 200ge is the better buy out of all three.
@@jaab5594 I suggest a 200ge with a dedicated gpu.
Just be sure to get a b350/450 motherboard with dual channel memory with ryzen. And if you need any help building a list for the pc, just let me know.
The reason you want two sticks of memory is similar to having two people running back and forth as messengers in comparison to one.
my wife has an amd 9700p 6gb ram, 1tb hdd laptop. it was 300$, but i feel so bad for it now because i bought a gigabyte aero 15x a few months ago, and then spent as much on her laptop as i did for a ssd i added to it.
so her laptop= 300$
my laptop= 3000$
on the bright side, i definitely use mine 10x more
LOL! If you felt bad there is no way you would have had that kind of gap in what you spent on her laptop vs your's.
" CPR on a chicken nugget" killed me xD
I am here to defend the A12, but I realize “if you buy the Athlon and use the 20~30 dollars difference to upgrade the cooling system of your case, overclock the Athlon and you can have better performance in ALL scenarios”.
Yes, assuming you use a dedicated gpu. An a12 without the igpu is an overpriced athlon
I'm kinda confused, predicted Ryzen? This is an AM4 cpu, same platform as Ryzen, they came out at the same time more or less
Who buys tech on release date not realizing they have to wait a bit to get decent Ryzen cpus?
if someone is buying an AM4 motherboard in late 2016, they know about Ryzen
at least if they are building one.
I paired a a10 7700k with a gtx 1060 and god was it awful, my mistake XD
good job man
