- Going pheasant shooting on a fabulous shoot in North Wales - sounds lovely but what’s it like when it all goes wrong? We look at shooting under pressure with the help of Johnny Carter from TGS Outdoors, Garry Doolan from BASC (hampered by a borrowed gun) and Gwysaney shoot owner James Davies-Cooke. Plus we are out with Russian RUclipsr Alex Vankov stalking in Sussex. Poor Gary... the gun slides off his shoulder & under his arm pit as he fires every shot! Assuming the gun fits him, his shot string will jump high for crossers (R-L or L-R) & he will shoot way ahead of a straight incomer when he applies the correct lead with follow through. Note: Make driven birds like this much easier by turning yourself so they are cross angle crossers. It means you do not loose sight of the bird as you match the flight to build a consistent follow through swing... He also lifts his head off the stock...

Give the guy a break field sports is for every one to enjoy you don't have to be some sort elite shooter just to please you lot. As long as he enjoyed who cares
Poor Gary, working for BASC and doesn’t even know how to mount a shotgun! How embarrassing for BASC
Hopefully there's a generous/canny shooting coach seeing this video who feels inspired to step in and give Gary a few on-camera sessions, with a view to showing future audiences just how much of a difference some solid coaching can make. (I'm guessing there were some sporting tailors in the audience wincing, too).
He also needs a lesson in safe gun handling, 7:15 he loads the gun and points it towards the 3 people on the next peg, hammers uncocked or not it's gash gun handling.
What a state BASC are in, Gary looked like he's never mounted a gun before. Aside from that, what's going on with this channel putting that out, surely after the first drive you should have seen what was going on and filmed the guy from TGS who can actually shoot and talk to camera. You've got professionals like Childerley/Crow/Pilbeam/Lupton/Doyle on the team who we actually want to see. Where's the walked up, falconry, fishing, air rifles etc. It would be good to see a few multi day camping sessions eating what is bagged like the one with Jason on fieldsports Ireland, or the walked up day Paul did where he cooked the venison and pheasant.

I have exactly the same gun (Baikal 16 bore Hammer) as Mr Doolan, purchased brand new in 1963 from Brownings of Bristol.
The BASC guy just needs a little tuition so people need to cut him a bit of slack, driven shooting is tricky if you're not a regular. He certainly looks like he doesn't do that much shooting, a bit of pigeon shooting now and again might be the job.
With respect, anyone shooting at live game should be confident and competent.. he's neither..
I'm sorry but if this is your typical BASC representative, then i now see why we are were we are. He looks as though he has never been on a game shoot before let alone shot on one.Showed a hand full of "Sponsored" green steel cartridges then shoots blue lead ones tut tut... if an ex journalist is all they can employ then we're all doomed Pike.. Frightening really

I think people are being rather unfair on Gary. He was being filmed and was using a strange gun that he had never shot before and then they stuck a shotkam on the end ! His shooting ability, or lack of it, is nothing to do with how well he does his job for BASC.

It's a tad disingenuous of Gary to put a load of eley steels in his pocket when you can see from the shotkam footage that he was using fibre wad (lead, presumably) ammunition on ducks at 2:15

Not the greatest and not the longest .....Such a shame where the news is the largeat item and the hunting youtube is mainly abroad... again, where is falconry, fishing, ferreting, walked up shooting, gundogs ...... It seems that FSC is totally focused on Deer & Commercial Pheashants ...Fingers crossed for the next instalment

Lordy lordy.... lot of tossers ripping into Gary. If it wasn't for BASC, The NGO and other such organisations, shooting would be gone. The one thing shooting isn't short of is quick to criticise pricks!

Poor Gary, he’ll read these comments and never step foot on a driven shoot again! Well at least he can return his tweeds now, clearly using lead on ducks unless it’s bismuth but I doubt it and definitely has very little experience using a shotgun, this isn’t going to give anyone faith in BASC only increase our concerns!

Horrific. Expect better from you guys to be honest. So glad i left BASC after many years of support last year. Highlights why I left them. Unprofessional to say the least. Cant even train his own dog!!! also to suggest its a work day so need to check the emails as members pay the wages!!! what, for you to shoot at birds on a work day.? im sure thats not what members are thinking they are paying for?!!! perhaps they are as im not in the membership anymore. Showing sponsored Non toxic, then filling the 16 bore with lead its not looking good. We are supposed to be fighting for the good of shooting not providing ammo(pardon the pun) to all the antis that are looking to destroy us. BASC are just simply not fit for purpose any longer. very much a jobs for the boys brigade

Embarrising for BASC
Oh dear, exactly what were you thinking BASC and Field Sports Britain thinking in showcasing this piece. If Gary is new to shooting at this level he should be coached and assisted, not exposed to criticism on the basics of shotgun shooting. I’m sure he would have benefited from not being put under such pressure or indeed showcased at all by his employer. It only confirmed to the core membership that BASC media have all the gear and no idea on how to promote effective shooting technique on live quarry. It isn’t fair to Gary and those of us who have practiced and perfected basic technique (well before being put on live game) to showcase this as adequate skill and technique. You are promoting a level of incompetence - shameful of you experts that supposedly represent us in the professionalism of our sport.
