- This how I made a cheap above ground pool deep enough to jump and dive into.
If you have any questions about specifics I would be happy to answer them in the comments.
Happy staying cool without huge GHG emissions!

Since I have made this pool the glue that I used has surpassed it's useful life. Check out the video on how I used waterproof tape to repair it.
Happy to share more info if anyone has questions.
I’m very impressed. That turned out Beautiful 😻. Lucky u know your stuff I’ve know some guys who didn’t do as awesome..lol 👍
Thank you! We just redid the pool in this video. It came out even better if I do say so myself.

Thanks again,
That is incredibly innovative, and completely awesome! (I really wish we were handy and could do stuff like this!).
Thank you. However this pool started leaking. I made a video on it.

You might be relieved not to be so handy after you watch it.
Thanks again,
Man, I'm doing this. Already have a 48" deep pool. Gonna drain it in September, and get the spot dug out before winter. When spring gets here, its on. What a great idea.
Sounds good!
How did it go
Outstanding
Thanks so much!
This is exactly what I needed to see to move forward with my idea! Thank you 🙏🏽
Cool, have fun!
Man I would love to be able to make a pool like this. Hopefully one day
Sounds good! Have fun!
Wow that looks amazing, thanks for the idea
Thanks
We love it!
Affordable and clever. Thanks for sharing a good idea.
You’re welcome 😊
I just finished the redoing this pool because the glue on this one gave up. I’ll post video soon.
Thanks,
Love love love love
Thank you!
Wow this is a really cool tutorial!
Thanks! It’s a fun pool to. My daughter and I swam for over an hour this evening and had a blast.
Thanks again,
This is awesome
Thank you for the kind words!
Swimming in this pool is fun!! I’ve enjoyed it a lot!
Isn’t it amazing how much a deep area adds to the swimming experience!?!
We have a pool that looks to be the same as yours. 16 by 31 from Costco. I also have our 9 by 18 from before. We are attempting to do this. We lined the hole with area rugs we got free. I’m having a hard time keeping them from wrinkling. Anyways. Thank you for the video. I’ve watched it 100 times.
Try using some cord or string to pull the top edges of the deep area liner up. Run them in loops so after the top pool holds it in place you can pull them out. This helps with the wrinkles that are from gravity pulling down the edges. Other wrinkles are just a pain.
Hope this helps.
I have been subscribed for a while and also watched the update when the pool sprung a leak. 5-6 years without trouble is not bad. I plan on doing this in a couple of months with the exact same pool size and shape. Can you tell me why you wouldn’t recommend going too much deeper with the deep spot? I was thinking if a 4-5ft deep spot shifted to one end a little more.
Hello! Yes, I would be glad to. The deep spot in this pool is about 32” or so making the overall depth of the deepest area 6’6” or so. It is square-ish with walls that are about 45 degree angle. The width is obviously limited by the width of the pool minus that flat spots on the sides that should be about 2’. These flat areas are important because I need an area to walk by the deep spot and more importantly for overall stability of the above ground walls. Everything would get more difficult the deeper you go, glueing together the liner, getting in out during construction, etc. With all that being said and you want to go deeper I would make it longer so one side is slopped at around 25 to 30 degrees while the other 3 sides are closer to 45. As far as positioning to one side there is no problem. Ours is slightly off center because of the layout of the preexisting deck.
Hope this helps, and I’ll try to get a video about what I do different done in the next few weeks. Meantime feel free to ask more questions!
Thanks,
@@sculptureforasmallplanet Thank you so much!
Awesome brother awesome!
Thanks so much!
That's smart
👍
Thanks!
I’m going to do this
I’m glad I did but do have some issues. You might want to check this out.

@@sculptureforasmallplanet thanks I think I have an idea of what to do now.
Why not using a pond liner 🤔
I mean that plástic sheet
I didn’t have a pond liner. I just did this pool over and I used the old pool. Works better than the little pool I used in this first one, but I learned a lot. Video will be out soon. Thanks,
Very nice idea !! Have you seen the teichswimmer and david pagan butler's approaches to keep water clean without chemicals ?
Thanks
No I haven’t but I’ll look them up.
Thanks for the tip
All you have to do is order a pool liner that is deeper than the one you have dig middle out, or square depending on your pool size…….much easier and less risk to leaks…….that is what we did
Yeah, I’ve seen that done on aluminum sided pools, but never on an intex like this one. Make a video so everyone can see. Thanks,
Looks amazing!!!
Thanks
We love it!
That’s a great idea but I feel like it would be easier to just use a liner
Thanks!
This pool in the video is finally starting to leak

I looked for a liner that would fit but couldn’t find one. Let me know if you know where I can get one that is flexible enough to line a pool like this.
Thanks again
The only problem thing is I would love to do this but house insurance won’t cover if it gets flooded as it’s a diy pool
Sorry to hear that. Hope you find something that will work for your situation.
Take care,
wow this is insane
I was feeling a little nuts making it but I’m glad I did!
Thanks,
Only Video i can find so far. I really want an Fitmax Ipool for the small size and depth. but at $1600 and up its not realistic. The footprint is 9x9 but If i can get one of the smaller bestaway or intex ovals or rectangles I want to make it deeper for therapy /exercise and tethered swimming. Where did you get the vinyl liner? MM thickness?
Hello,
I used an material from an intex easy up, round pool to line the deep spot of an intex 16’x32’x52”. The liner and frame came in one big box. Don’t know how thick it is, sorry.
Hope this helps!
Caution to the person inquiring at the bottom of the comments
Consider cleaning before you commit because if you're unable to reach the bottom well you will regret the depth.
Cost of water (dehydration) plus supplies has gone up so much I closed my pool 3 weeks ago. Really missing it.
I agree you want to be able to reach the bottom of the pool!
Water is also an issue. Sorry to hear that you had to close yours down do to lack of water. But pools can also be mini personal reservoirs that ca be filled in the spring with natural sources. Then provide water security and fire protection through the summer.
Thanks,
What a great idea! I wonder if you could head-weld the vinyl together. I assume that is how the vinyl is attached at the factory.
Also, I wonder how much you could get away with having a deep-er area in the middle of the pool with the vinyl stretching to fill it..... The supports for the perimeter of the pool would still have to be level..... but the center could possibly be a foot deeper without causing problems (maybe).
Thanks!
It’s definitely welded together in the factory. Looks like between two rollers. And yes maybe it could be deeper but if I was to do it over, I wouldn’t make it deeper. It’s deep enough to give a real swimming experience for us.
Thanks again!
@@sculptureforasmallplanet Thanks for the reply.... I agree that your pool is plenty deep for sure! I was just wondering out loud how much depth I could get away with without doing anything to the pool liner. I was wondering if an un-altered pool liner might allow for more depth in the middle of the pool just by stretching. Even if it worked (without breaking) it would only add a little depth.... And so I'm thinking about trying your approach.
@@endorphinder sounds good. Might want to do some experiments before you put to much time an money into it.
My deep spot has about 40 to 45 degree slope. It would be really hard for me to go steeper. Also I have 0 experience with flexible liners so have nothing to offer there.
Best,
I don't know about the "cheap" part. Seems pretty involved.
Yes, it is involved but it you compare to most other pools that are 6’6” deep it is a lot less money
so freakin cool!
Thanks!
What's the name of the glue?
I used HH-66 on this one but it let go after 6 years. I just redid it and used pvc glue which I think is going to last longer. Thanks,
So there is 1 ton of greenhouse gasses in an unground pool? Is this a metric ton?
Thanks for the question.
I was just using a figure of speech but I did a little research and it turns out that it was fairly accurate. It would take about 7 yards of concrete to make similar size pool. 1 yard of concrete is responsible for about 400 pounds of CO2. 7x400=2800 pounds of CO2. A metric ton is 2204 lbs.
Of course there are many variables of transportation, labor, equipment etc that could be debated forever.
I know this style pool isn’t for everyone or even a small number of people. So if you’re looking at an traditional in ground but you still want to decrease GHG I would recommend a solar cover and solar heat. I have a video on it.
Thanks again and stay cool!
Hey buddy nice job! I’m thinking about doing something similar this summer if things work out. I’d love to bend your ear and ask u a few questions. I’m J from PA! Hello! It’s 1:51am
Thank you friend! I’m actually redoing this pool right now. Check out this video,

Green house emissions?
Yeah, as opposed to going concrete or driving to a public pool. But nobody seems to care about GHG.
@@sculptureforasmallplanet I understand that. You are correct. I myself never consider it either. We have a 22' round pool now. Simply for the convince.
@@RonFleener 22’ pool is pretty nice on a hot summer day!
Just curious. How does this save greenhouse gas emissions? Lol
Hello,
That would be I n comparison to in ground concrete pool with steel reinforcement which are material and labor intensive.
Thanks,
@@sculptureforasmallplanet ok cool
U mind doing mines like that
Actually I might have to do this one over! The glue I used started to give it up and it was leaking. I patched with tape and it’s still holding to this day but I don’t want it to drain out in the middle of the summer!
Thanks,😊
How deep is the deep spot is is it 12 feet
Hello. The deepest spot is 6’6”. I would not recommend trying to make a pool like this 12 feet deep.
Thanks,
Thanks for letting me know keep up the good work
You should have seal it with flex seal lol
I have had some luck with flex seal tape but I actually use gorilla because it is half the price!
Thanks,
@@sculptureforasmallplanet i am just joking about the flex seal. I am glad your pool is going strong. I hope intex can make a deeper pool or one with a deeper spot.
@@terryxperry the glue is the weakest part of this design. 6 years after the pool in this video was made the glue let go. So even though I kind of think flex seal is a joke too I tried everything. We used PVC glue for the new pool that we did this year. So far it’s working well.
Thanks,
@@sculptureforasmallplanet u got 6 years on the frist pool with is great. I hope your new pool lasts that long or more.
What glue did you use to connect the liners together.
Hi,
I used HH-66 vinyl cement. It works pretty well except that it turns a brownish yellowish color so don’t go to far beyond the lamination. And it doesn’t hold the thin vinyl as well. So the thin dark blue, peace of mind patches, are coming off but all of the thick fake tile pieces are holding tight. As well as the thicker round bottom of the inflatable ring pool.
No leaks or anything just that I wouldn’t bother with the cheap thin vinyl if I was going to do it again.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
@@sculptureforasmallplanet as soon as you comment they are doing to change the formula so it does the complete opposite 😅
Thanks for sharing
@@religionisapoison2413 yeah maybe but it isn’t all that great anyway. This pool is going on it’s sixth year and the glue is letting go. So if they change it hopefully it’s better!
@@sculptureforasmallplanet good point, thanks for the update. That's still a decent run. More permanent you'd probably just have to go with gunite and use some sort of concrete under it.
@@sculptureforasmallplanet actually I've not seen any liner X gunite hybrids. If you look into it in your freetime and find something send me the video title or similar. I imagine there is a way to do something like that... Use the liner for the walls and then beneath the pool you could potentially dig in any manner you want, unless the liner acts as parchment paper against the gunite.
I'm looking at buying a house, a big compound of sorts, and we're both remote so the condition of the home is just that it has a deep pool for diving. After a day or two of looking at solutions it's pretty apparent there should be a more affordable solution for a good quality deep in ground pool than what is current.
What’s the smallest pool you could do this in?
I’m not sure, but I recommend putting a flat edge around the deep spot that decreases the chance that the walls of the pool get undermined. This pool flat spot is about 24”. Hope this helps!
Thanks
What green house gasses can a swimming pool make?!! Seriously!?
Hello,
Mostly in the concrete.
Thanks,
okay, nice depth, but as any swimmingpool all over the world, they always put the depth on the far side, so you have more ground to stand on to play, esspecially with these size kids.. But thats my opinion. Now there only is room for diving deep.
Yeah, I would have put the deep spot on the far side but it's kind off center by about 5' because I wanted to be able to jump off the deck into it. When I made it my daughter couldn't touch bottom anywhere so I put a chase lounge chair into make a spot so she could stand up.
But you're right it isn't a traditional deep end but it could be if one wanted it to be.
Thanks,
I’m just here to inform you a year later that… no one asked for it. Who cares.
Do you have any other options for the glue that I can use
Hi,
I’ve used small amounts of Boxers vinyl cement and it seems to work pretty well. Vinyl is kind of wired stuff so I suggest testing your adhesives before committing to a larger project.
Thanks
Hi,
I’ve used Boxer’s vinyl adhesive in small amounts with success. Vinyl is weird stuff though so I suggest that you do test before you apply to a bigger project.
Thanks
Ballsy move. Don't think the old lady will trust me on this one. Lol
Yeah, my wife was pretty skeptical at first too. She’s sold now though.
How deep is it
It’s about 6’7” deep.
Thanks
@@sculptureforasmallplanet thanks good job
How deep is it?
Hello,
It’s about 6’6”
Thanks,
@@sculptureforasmallplanet thanks!
Why not just buy a bigger linner lol
That’s a good question.
When I was doing research before I started I found stretchable liners for the aluminum walled above ground pools. These liners would allow a gradual increase in depth across the entire bottom of about 1.5 feet. I was looking for a deeper pool and a lower price tag.
Thanks for asking!
The cheap pool was made with old dirty equipment and manufacturing. With slave labor and then put on a dirty barge for trans oceanic trip. It cost China $1.00 to make lol.
Yeah, the part that came in the box was probably exploiting under paid workers as well as the environment.
Green house gasses?
GTHOOH with that nonsense...
“GTH…”, that’s funny.
Thanks,
𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐦 😘
Thanks for the suggestion but I'm not in this for money.
Hello, would this idea work on a 14 ft circular pool? And did you just cut the cheap pool to put it in the deep part?
