I use 2 X hi hats, well one is an old Hi hat stand I coverted because it was from Groove Percussion. The other is from Meinl. But I loved the video and have to ask. May you please try and make a Remote Cable Hi Hat Stand?
I 🖤’em! I use everything from quick and dirty cymbal stands with felts/washers to the DW, MG-3. Also an old cheap HH stand. You really can’t have too many hihats. 😅
The cool thing with this hack on this set is that if you wanted, you could sink the down tube into the bass drum mount (they should both be 7/8"). Or onto a stand lower section that takes 7/8". So many choices! Nice work David. Tasty grooves too.
I honestly enjoy the fact you went through the tools needed in this video, I think it should be a constant. I'm a carp, most tools in your videos I have access too, but its nice for people who don't do wood work for a living.
I don't like how the format of the show changed... ...but I like how helpful it's gonna be once someone actually gets to making one of these... And today is when I found out I was lazy. Sounds great dude!
I have been going through the Drumeo Method for the past 6 weeks after having years away from playing drums. It has been a huge help in getting back into it and developing a steady practice routine.
Ive been using what i call a dumbhat. Made from a cymbal stand bottom and a hihat stand top tube, clutch and rod. Its good but its a whole heavy stand to carry, and takes up floor space. What you made here is brilliant. For all the obvious reasons. Thanks.
What I like most about this vid is how the K Custom special dry cymbals sound. I'm thinking of buying a set of those. But overall it's a nice vid DIY vid again, David. Thnx.
Nicely done. Only suggestion would be that you cut the other end of the rod, and re-thread, thus leaving a nice factory finish on the visible end of the rod.
This is one of the best drum equipment videos I've ever seen. Just freakin brilliant! This is one of things that makes me go " dang! Why didn't I think of that?"
Very cool. Just looked around and found that I have all the parts to make this on hand, so I will try tomorrow. The only thing I will add is a small hole on the tom arm so I can put a screw in to hold the dowel in place. My arm is too wide and the dowel can move around.
At that point just buy the Tama aux hihat attachment. This project is good if someone already has a bunch of unused Pearl type tom mounts. However if you had to buy all the parts it’s better to just buy an aux hi - hat attachment.
Years ago, back in the 70s, my Ludwig high-hat stand broke, so I took the top of the high-hat stand and mounted it on a Ludwig atlas cymbal stand base and made my own closed high-hat stand to go with my double bass set. Cheap and effective.
You need a forstner bit to make the larger hole on the bottom of the dowel. A regular drill bit may work, but it will never give you a nice flat surface for the nut to rest on like a forstner bit will. Just thought I’d mention that, since it’s never explicitly stated in the video, and newbs probably have no idea what a forstner bit is.
Did you do anything to the top of the hihat rod to prevent it from rusting? I’ve learned another trick to prevent that from happening, cut the other end of the hihat rod and retap the threads, the tip would stay the same, bo treatment necessary to prevent it from rusting. Either way cool hack! I do use aux hats depending on the kit
Now just take the bottom part of the old Hi-hat stand / controller and run a bicycle cable off of the old placement of the Hi-hat stem and run that same cable to the new hihat post / stem. Now you have a hihat clutch rack mount. You just saved $559!
woild you say that thr cost to build is cheaper than outright buying one? sadly i font have access to a workshop but ive been dying for an aux hat myself
It is cool... But yet .. How many have all of those tools? Is the time worth it compared to buying an X-hat 2nd hand? and then the fact that it only works if you happen to have pearl hardware laying around.
hey realy cool video. But you don't need a Wood Saw absolutly. You can cut the Wood Type Thing also with the Hack Saw. It's no problem to cut with the Hack Saw Wood. (:
Hey David, I was wondering if I could send u a 18" Sab Xsr Con. Crash, & u would put lil holes in it like in the Sab Frx or Aero crash, either one, but just with a few less holes? Pls dude, when I got it home it just didn't sound the way it did at GC, so will ya help me? I'd be very grateful & I know ur fans would Love to see another cymbal reconstruction vid, thanks Dave, so how do I get ur info to send it to ya? Do I need to send any cash, if so it's no prob, I'm just excited about the fact u just might help
Nice DIY except I’d find a used cymbal arm or off brand instead of spending $45 for it. I mean with the other parts you bought you’re at what it costs for a Gibraltar aux hat. Cool of you got the parts laying around though!
Awesome project. Couldn't you just drill a hole in the plastic plug in the tom arm? That would be simpler than cutting and drilling the wooden dowel. I agree the dowel is more secure. I'm just lazy 😎.

When sanding and filing the hihat post after cutting it down to length, you should chuck it into the drill, to speed things up.

I have two: one for a china x O-zone crash stack another for another pair of hihats
I wouldn't call it an aux hat as it doesn't open n close? Just a stack imop lol!
Thanks for this awesome video, rdavidr! 🔥
The random cut ins of David making innuendos about his own tutorial made my day
The set of splashes sound like/better than a programmed electronic emulation. Very Cool.
Lots of innuendoes, classic. That Yamatron kit looks straight 80's, I dig it.
"That's a nice looking hole." Context is key. 😅
Things a dentist can say that a gynecologist can't.
@@jerrywalker6043👆 That phrase sounds like a skit idea for "Whose line is it anyway".
Same as "6-inch rod!" 😅
"6 inch should be enough"
“The nut goes in the hole”

I love how the instructional part carries right into the groove
Ive been using what i call a dumbhat. Made from a cymbal stand bottom and a hihat stand top tube, clutch and rod. Its good but its a whole heavy stand to carry, and takes up floor space. What you made here is brilliant. For all the obvious reasons. Thanks.
Those drums look absolutely gorgeous😩😩😩😩🙌🏽🔥
can you do an in depth video of them??
Oh the crash and crash ride here are lovely.
What I like most about this vid is how the K Custom special dry cymbals sound. I'm thinking of buying a set of those.

That would be a bit more advanced for many. Hacksaw, I already have and know how to use. A die, I do not own, nor know how to use yet
@@meribor the easiest part is the using one. The hard part is to get one that's worth a damn, because they're so expensive.
And the difference, then?
@@meribor Hi there - this then leaves a smooth perfect factory-finish at the top of the rod. :)
@@kalamkanomi And...?
Well those splashes got a new home
Thanks for the tip man. Stay awesome 🤘🏾 greetings from Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬
Good to see you working with drumeo again! Love to see your work with them more in the future 🙏🏻

I am always looking forward to your videos. They are interesting, provide suggestions and are also entertaining. Go on!!! Greetings from Germany.👍👍👍
That kick drum is sounding nice!
Dude, that groove is so nasty!! 🥁💙🔥
Also, the hi hat thing was cool too. 🤘🤘
"6 inch rod" -rdavidr
Imagine having to carry around a 30" don...I mean gong.
Hey RDavidR! You are a smart, funny, practical and nice human being. Love ya!
that cymbal combo sounds wicked!
Thanks for doing this one. Going to make a few of those
I kind of need a playlist of just the end grooves from all your videos.
“Yamatron”? Nice!
I can think of a slightly blued, hand hammered “RdavidR” snare that would go great with that kit.😉
Very cool. Just looked around and found that I have all the parts to make this on hand, so I will try tomorrow. The only thing I will add is a small hole on the tom arm so I can put a screw in to hold the dowel in place. My arm is too wide and the dowel can move around.
Perfect vibe, awsome video👍
I wish Drumeo had Simon Phillips with them
I wud love to see it
Personally, I would add some kinde of metal spring to adjust the tention between the cymbls
At that point just buy the Tama aux hihat attachment. This project is good if someone already has a bunch of unused Pearl type tom mounts. However if you had to buy all the parts it’s better to just buy an aux hi - hat attachment.

sweet hack and awesome playing!
I'm gathering parts to recreate this, myself! I have two 12-inch splashes that should work well!
That's an awesome diy project, but i don't have a long pearl arm. I have everything else. 😌 great video
Cool add on!
I would make this if i had a tom arm
You should try to make a remote hi-hat stand! Possibly using a regular hihat stand for parts.
Nice playing! 🥁❤
I’ve got two. One with closed 14’s and one with closed 10 inch splashes. Both hat sets are zildjian L80’s.
Thanks for the tutorial. Much easier to do than I would have thought.
What I learned watching videos on the Internet today: put the nut in the hole with the 6" rod.
I also learned how to make a hi-hat mounting arm.
Drumeo needs more rdavidr!
Love this channel!!
You need a forstner bit to make the larger hole on the bottom of the dowel. A regular drill bit may work, but it will never give you a nice flat surface for the nut to rest on like a forstner bit will.
Just thought I’d mention that, since it’s never explicitly stated in the video, and newbs probably have no idea what a forstner bit is.
hi, nice trick but would you tell me more about your snare sound (wich snare, tuning ?) thanks
Wow 🙏
You think you can try and make one that opens and closes? Like a remote hi hat stand
I did on the Drumeo series actually, ill have to revisit it at some point!
Did you do anything to the top of the hihat rod to prevent it from rusting? I’ve learned another trick to prevent that from happening, cut the other end of the hihat rod and retap the threads, the tip would stay the same, bo treatment necessary to prevent it from rusting. oops - just made the same suggestion.
Very cool!
Wow, i like it.
Could you please make a tutorial how to mount a bass drum to use it like Slipknot uses a bass drum like a floor tom.
What about this crazy Yamaha kit?
Now just take the bottom part of the old Hi-hat stand / controller and run a bicycle cable off of the old placement of the Hi-hat stem and run that same cable to the new hihat post / stem. Now you have a hihat clutch rack mount. You just saved $559!
What is that mount the whole thing goes on?
I have to build one of these...
u should try using two nuts instead to keep the nut from unscrewing during use but i mean if you screw it hard enough i dont think it would matter
Plz make huge drum sticks out of dowel with a lathe
What size counter bore bit?
now add adjustable HH-clutch and it's perfect
Our Ron Swanson of drums.
rdavidr makes sounding awkward sound cool!
What's the song playing at around 5:00 ?
What was the song called that you jammed to at the end???
I love how the only comments he makes on the tutorial are "nice looking hole", "so the nut goes in the hole" and "6 inch rod"
homeboy makes me wanna build a scrap yard kit🤣🤣
where do you get your drumless tracks
Is that a low volume splash on bottom and Trashformer splash on top?
Sounds great!
yup!
Maybe a hose clamp centered where the plastic seat meets the metal tube... Just in case. Otherwise, great job!
Wait hold up 1:58 that voice sounds familiar, 2:30 those hands look familiar too
What kind of kit is this?
Channel locks bro
Experimentally meta lol, also who is going to have a counter bore that size?
woild you say that thr cost to build is cheaper than outright buying one? sadly i font have access to a workshop but ive been dying for an aux hat myself
youre probably better off buying one unless you already have the stuff lying around.
Nice ✏️ lookin’ ✏️ hole ✏️

and then the fact that it only works if you happen to have pearl hardware laying around.

How about a bass drum hoop-mounted version? :D
hey realy cool video. But you don't need a Wood Saw absolutly. You can cut the Wood Type Thing also with the Hack Saw. It's no problem to cut with the Hack Saw Wood. (:
I think he just means any saw that can cut wood, he just happens to have a fancy one :)

That's cool but for like $35 you can buy this setup already done, and it mounts onto a cymbal arm. No sacrificial hi hat stand needed.
I mean but those who play hard and break stuff can repurpose it
