What are some of your favorite drum accessories? 🥁 🛠 🐊
Cymbal felts
Drumsticks... Obviously 😂
Probably the snareweight M80
big fatt ssnare
Moongels
I love me some moon gel
I bought a bicycle tire tube about 15 years ago and have been using a piece of that to protect my bass drum hoop. It also works to secure clamps that won’t stay in place.
Great idea!
Like 13 years ago, I used an old ribbon from a souvenir lanyard my sister got me in Italy as snare straps when mine broke traveling. I figured it would hold me over for the trip, but then I never went back to anything else. I kept thinking I was some sort of genius for discovering the perfect snare strap. Turns out… I was!
… but so were the other million drummers who also did the same thing. Hahaha.
By the way, if you're ever in a pinch and need to reattach your snare wires, especially if you're on tour and in a hotel room, remember that most sets of window blinds come with a few feet of free snare cord. If something breaks in the middle of a show and you don't have anything to replace it with, sometimes there are even blinds in one of the windows of the venue.
My favourite accessory on my kit is a cup holder that attaches to any drum stand. Trust me its very handy to be able to have a drink when you need it.
It's a well known fact that every dropped drum key you, uhh, well drop... teleports to David's "Beard Dimension" and never comes back. To stop that from happening, I surgically remove my left hand and replace it with a cybernetic drill with a permanent drum key bit. It's a "bit" of a commitment and having only one hand could be a challenge, but it's SO WORTH IT.
Most of my drum tips I got from you- best one is tying the bass drum to the throne at our church. Made a world of
Difference!
My all time favorite drum accessory is space. Actual free space in which to set up my kit.
"Pro tip*" Fold the gros grain in half, then cut at an angle. Then (depending on which way you fold and cut it) you'll have a chevron, or a point end. Also a good idea to hit the cut ends with a lighter for a second to alleviate fraying ends. Hmm... Fraying Ends. That'd be a good band name.
LOVE grosgrain ribbons. I use a lighter on the ends to prevent fraying.
Best drum accessory is second floor tom to put your beer on.
I play a Catalina Club with an 18" kick. The pedal has a riser on it with protective pads, and the hoop actually has another protector pad built in. Well done, Gretsch.
Love to see Dave repping Fazio Electric.
I love that Fazio Electric T-shirt! I also am somewhat addicted to watching her videos
that snare bottom mic holder is gold!
Big ups on the Fazio Electric shirt! She's fantastic!
Ok, that zip tie dispenser, made me pause for a second. So simple, but so helpful!
I use a few inches of an old bicycle tire tube cut on one side so it wraps around the rim as a bass drum rim protector. Old bike tubes can come in handy for a million things. Loose mic clamps, protecting your stands from those clamp on accessories, just a few other examples.
The bass drum anchor was a life saver! Can't tell you how many times it's saved me! Never flipped it over but never saw a reason to.
bass drum anchor is the best thing on that list something ive been needing for years to stop my bass drum from running away
The spelling out of the PDP mic holders had me DYING lol
Dude that last thing with the zip tie...effing amazing!🤯 Love you man, great stuff, as always!
This is awesome! I love your engineer mind for drums. Gotta get me some of that sleek 'mic stand' action!
I can't imagine how difficult it has become for you to come up with new content. With saying that, thank you for your new video.I always enjoy them&have been a subscriber since you started
One of my favorite tricks is to use a normal multiclamp with a gooseneck for microphone placement. You can do something similar to what you did for your snare bottom mic; I also love it for bass drum microphones so you don't have to worry about a stand in front of your bass drum getting kicked by the guitarist or singer all the time.
I love the bass drum anchor. It looks classic and is super practical. Saves money on nails…
Bass drum anchor is an essential piece of kit. A large contributing factor in bass drum "walk" that is often not considered, is running a single rack tom mounted off the bass drum, this will often cause the opposite leg to lift off the ground every time you thump the bass drum. Putting your tom on a snare stand or hanging it on a cymbal stand instead can vastly improve the "walk" factor.....
just got the drum anchor and cracked up watching your video, they are great as always!
Great tips!! I love that mic clips tip
Gibraltar bass riser, it’s amazing!
#4 The "microphone boom arm with clamp" from gibraltar will do that for the $40 range. I got one, it's very solid and stable; there's no need to buy two separate $30+ things for that purpose.
Another helpful piece of hardware is the "K&M 24035 Bass Drum Microphone Holder". It looks like it's supposed to clip onto the rim of the bass drum, but it falls right off when used that way; _however_ it will clamp quite securely to the flat part of the leg of a cymbal stand (or any stand with a base comprised of three legs with the two flat parts per leg, like a snare stand), and it should be possible to position the mic for the beater side of the bass drum in most setups.
I use the hell out of Sugru thanks to you. Pedal pads, key clamps and even custom ear molds for my cheap KZ in-ear monitors. Now they don’t slip out anymore!
This kind of stuff is what got me loving your channel way back when. Thanks for keeping it humble.🔥🔥
GREAT video and tips, @rdavidr !
The Gibraltar bass drum riser and the multiple key are essential too!
Always a good day when I see that noti pop up
I got a custom sjc kit with rawhide hoop protectors... they work great and look spectacular !!
I like the DW quick release cymbal felts with built-in drum key, as well as the hoop mounted bass drum mic holder. I also like eliminating as many stands as possible.
Very clever, mate. Thank you!
Dude props on the Frankensteined mic stand!! You just solved my current issue, and this is why I love your videos
Cool video. On my Pearl BLX series kit I have a rim protector that came stock with the kit in the late 80's. The rim is still in great shape because of that simple device. I play that kit in rotation. I Love the Birch. ✌
Definitely gonna grab a couple of those mic arms. Thanks!
I've been using a felt for the bass drum hoop. Works great!
I snagged a leather belt from goodwill and cut a piece off to use as a bass drum hoop protector.
This video was great, I need a sequel.
Definitely the Hoopsaver!!
Just bought a vintage kit - did not know about bass drum anchors and now I need one in the worst way. Thanks Dave!
I have a nice rubber bass drum protector. Keeps the wood hoop in good shape
Cymbal tuners and moongels are the funniest things to me, since they’re literally just magnets and gel clings that you can find at any hardware store for 10x cheaper.
Whoa man, we definitely need to see more of this Club Date kit
awesome video david!
The drum anchors make my classic Premier kit look even more classic
I didn't know about bass drum hoop protectors! Currently using some tape to disperse the pressure from the BD pedal. Cool accessories! Thanks, man. :)
That Ludwig set is just beautiful 😍
Great tips!
Great list. I used a bass drum hoop spike since my first drum set came with it; a 1983 Imperialstar. It was a must have until I got my Starclassics. The spurs on that are more than adequate now.
had a nice giggle at the cluster zone
Yes... I used a bass drum anchor on my '65 Ludwig super Classics. Yes I'm on a rug...and yes I use the rubber side. Yes. It works great.
I also have a Pearl BD hoop protector on all of my bass drums.
Also the BEST mic stands that eliminate nearly all of the clumsy basses, check out Triad-Orbit.
My favourite drum accessory..?
My roady/butler!
I agree 100% with the mic stand real-estate around the kit, I use drum clamps with some 5/8" aluminum tubing and then just use a tap I have for fixing mic stands after ID10t's cross thread mic clips for under the snare, for the rest I've got some adapters meant for adding a lower mic to a stand to mic acoustic guitars and some lightweight booms. The adapters go on the cymbal stands, the booms can reach the Toms and Snare top easy. For over heads and room mics I have mic booms attached to the ceiling and use hooks along the route to have the cables on, all works well
Just found your channel, you are hilarious man. reading the entire specific product name had me dying 😂
I have a Tama and a SJC custom snare drum and I've been getting creative finding equipment to make my drum set sound good.
Drum hoop protector?! Damn thats genious
Didn’t know about the bass drum hoop protector to be honest! Going to have to get one of those
Yes. I use drum hoop protectors. I recently took over playing drums at my church. The church kit didn't have one, but I had some scrap leather. So in true RDavidR style, I made one myself.
I don't even play the drums and I feel I need all this!
Probably my best accessory was a set of - Pearl SBA-1/3 Snare Basket Adapter - I had a pretty decent Pearl snare stand but it wouldn't close down enough for my 12" (Sakae Pac-D) snare. I knew Pearl did the adapters but they were really hard to find probably now discontinued. I have since found a Yamaha snare that goes smaller (intended for a practice pad) but that is also lighter and less adjustable than the Pearl Stand.
Hello, I have the pearl SBA 1/3 adapters (3). Interested in buying?
@@NATAGUILARMUSICThanks for the offer, but I was able to source some in the end at a reasonable price - probably hadn't made that clear enough.
I defenitly need the first one
My only bass drum that already had a hoop protector was the one from my very first kit, a Sonor 'Swinger' series from the 70's, and I remember being surprised that my next one didn't have one also, which was a Tama 'Imperialstar'.
I have the tackle instruments bass drum protector. Pretty nice.
Good video David
I have a vintage bass drum front anchor on my gennie mid-60/s Ludwig blue oyster kit. Saw it on Ringo's in early pix and had to have it. I use Pearl hoop protectors on all 4 of my kits. I hate scarring-up wood hoops and would never be without hoop protectors ever again!
Good vid! Going spikes up on the kick drum anchor will also keep that pesky lead singer off your schytt!
Once I discovered them, I now have hoop protectors on every one of my kits.
Very cool
I have a bass drum hoop protector but it was there when I got it. Otherwise I would be using a stick sleeve.🙂
Hardly an accessory but my favourite (that I own) is my practice pad on a stand. Holds my phone, earphones case, and a water bottle in range for changing song and drink breaks when I’m short for space and a table is out of the question
I bought a guitar mic stand which came with a boom for the singer and a mid mount to cover the port hole. I flipped it around and cut down the boom which works great for the two mics on my snare. The boom covers the batter side and the top covers my reso and it was way cheaper.
Mic stand for under snare drum was best of video!
Do have a couple of bass drum hoop protectors but also have stair-step tape for those hoops that are already trashed. Kinda prefer the stair-step over the "nice" protectors.
The rubber strips used on top of metal garden edging are u-shaped with a channel that just happens to fit perfectly on a snare drum hoop and protect the rack tom from hoop rash. I prefer snare cord over ribbon because ribbon can cause unequal tension from one side of the snares to the other if the ribbon is not perfectly straight. Cord can slide through the holes and equalize the tension.
Awesome
Grosgrain ribbon is the shit. I've had the same ribbon on my snare for years and it's held up just fine.
Exelentes videos! Saludos desde México!🥁🤓🙌.
Bass drum anchor was actually a good shout, my 60s Ludwig is constantly sliding across the room.
You should be out on the road as a drum tech for some of the biggest bands/artists in the world. Seriously. You could have an incredible career doing that if you wanted it. Your technical prowess, ability to improvise/"jury-rig," your knowledge of tools, materials and places to access them, your knowledge of drums, cymbals and all manner of percussion related items, you have a workshop at home for projects in between tours. On top of all that, you have a great personality that would fit perfectly in the aforementioned role and not to mention, you could make a pretty awesome tour/travel vlog for your RUclips channel. Straight up, if I had a big time, money making band, I'd be offering you whatever it is the top dollar drum techs get to go out on the road.
Along with heads, hoop protectors are the first thing I put on with a new kit!
Finally a good drum vid after me going back from Lake District :)
Also zip tie on grosgrain roll inspired! Thanks.
Thx for the vid👍👌
Every vintage kit I have, has a bass drum anchor. Yes, the rubber ends work well. TIP: Use a small washer in the bottom of floor tom legs/etc., to stop pegs from poking through rubber ends.
Personally I use automotive gasket material on my bass drum pedal. I like this because the other solutions I have seen will still mark up the hoop some, but this avoids any markings whatsoever. Also great for other parts of the kit, such as tom clamps that don't correctly tighten any longer (happens when you get a used kit).
Lol these are nifty ideas. And you make laugh so hard
I just got the hoop protecter
I use those polyester straps they use for pallets as snare straps, they're like...free and super sturdy.
Last year I got this beginner “Ashthorpe” drum set as a gift. I was surprised recently to find out that bass drum creep is even a thing, because this kit’s kick does not move on me at all! I think you should definitely do a review on the Ashthorpe kit, David.
Gibraltar makes an adapter for cymbal stands to mount a microphone for about $10.
I also use a piece of leather for my bass drum hoop, just so I don't have to permanently fix something to it.
Fazio Electric T-shirt! I knew you were a cool guy.
I used to use a hoop protector, but the newer DW5000 and 9000 have the tri pivot clamp with rubber feet, they might leave rubber marks on your hoop, but they definitely wont eat them up
I carry a minimum of 2 drum keys with me to all percussion related events. One comes with me everywhere but another is usually in any stick bag or pedal case I travel with. So I’d say that’s my favorite accessory. I replaced all my wing nuts with quick release thingies but it doesn’t work for chinas. They’re too unbalanced and the thingy eventually works it way off. But all non chinas have one. Save tons of time.
I think I saw you reference the strap material in another one of your videos a while back. Like Frank's Red Hot... these days... "I put that S#!t on everything". Thanks David!
Dude I use the first item to mount my bass drums 🤘
1:40 Nope! I don't have a hoop protector but it's essential for a drummer to have one. Will buy that sometime in the future.
