Dead Mount Death Play is kinda like what you get if you mix Baccano with a Fujimoto one shot. Mayb less iconic but a hell of a lot of fun.

I can't wait to see what the reactions will be when the Fate/Strange Fake TV anime starts airing. Going by just the ONA, I feel like it's gonna be a wild ride, and it'll probably be one of the biggest shows of its season just by virtue of being a new big Fate thing and having big action spectacle production values.

I'd do a lot for another show to make me feel as happy and excited and uplifted as the concluding episodes of durarara. I don't know if it's present in the books but the anime stumbles into a cohesive narrative theme at the end that gives the narrative a sense of having a purpose instead of just being random different interconnected stories. All the characters have drastically different tones (Issac and Miria being the most positive and lighthearted) and at the end all the characters with tones of optimism and kindness overpower the stories of all the characters with tones of nihilism and cynicism. You can see it happen in real time when Ennis is about to die at the hands of her creator after disobeying him (an end that makes perfect sense for her dark fantasy noir story) only for him to be pelleted by baseballs from Isac and Miria or Cezlaw bracing himself for death after accepting he'd rather die than continue to live in a dog eat dog world where no one actually cares for each other only to be embraced and accepted. It's the kind of thing that you could only really do with a large cast of characters all playing out their own plots & no other piece of art really captures it perfectly. That unified narrative of kind people being able to brighten the lives of others just by extending their compassion towards them and literally change the narrative trajectory of other peoples life just by coming into contact with them really stops it from just feeling like a random spew of ideas.
Durarara almost reaches that point by having a unified narrative of people being less alone in their struggles and experiences than they realize (the scene where you see all the dollar members work together being the highest point of that and not coincidentally probably the most impactful and satisfying payoff in the whole series) but doesn't fully make good on that. It gives the impression that Narita maybe doesn't understand or even think about the main underlying heart of his works and that's why a directed anime with more focused vision can make better use of his material. I really hope someone tries to recreate the kind of crowded hoping around narrative because it's rare and can really bring a certain emotion out in a way that stories with few characters and plots could. Bacano ending with Issac and Miria decades into the future only just realizing that they don't seem to age leaves you with such a strong feeling of there always being incredibly kind people out there some where in the world and I wish more shows could have that level of impact.

For me, DMDP has all of the cool characters stuff that you said, but also it's a story about information. Who has it and who doesn't, and how they've interpreted that information. For example, from my view, Solitaire is the least informed character, but he gets himself involved anyway because his curiosity is more powerful than any logic he may have in his brain. I found all the scenes where he had to improv knowing more than he does pretty entertaining and even though he gets involved with supernatural beings he's still more or less a guy who says he wants to find real magic while pulling off insane magic tricks.

It’s a lot like Fate/Zero in that regard but why I think that show hd more clarity in its storytelling is it worked hard to distribute attention among its characters and be sure we understood their motives from the start. That didnt always work dramatically in F/Z and DMDT should be more interesting but it just introduces SO many characters that it waits SO long to talk about.

Back in the day I wasn't super into a anime but dabbled with a good handful of shows here and there, then one day in 2011 I caught a glimpse of Durarara as I had Adult Swim on in the background, I was enamored with the characters and background art, I instantly looked the show up and binged it. Both Baccano and Durarara are still some of my favorite anime today, they may even be how I found your channel many years ago. I've been clamoring for another Narita original joint, so I'm kind of saddened to hear that this new one is kind of a hot mess and doesn't live up to his past works, but you at least talked me into giving it a try!!

I would actually recommend the manga, since it's way less confusing ( or at least most of the confusion is intentional), the only possible downside is the fanservice.
As another avid narita fan, I'd say that Dead Mount Death Play has both some of his best writing as well as some of his most " MEH " writing, and one of his most compelling main character.
Also, there's gonna be an adaptation of fate/ strange fake , which is also written by narita, though, it's a spinoff, so you need to at least be familiar with the general fate franchise lore .

  • @rapidoso2120

I can’t really speak for the anime adaptations, because I tried to watch them when I was still a child.
I can confidently say that I really like Baccano. The perspective shifts have never bugged me and I found the prose to be pretty concise while not being so short that it doesn’t have a sense of poetry to it. I will agree with you that a lot of the scenes in the early halves of Narita books can be sort of dull since it just feels like they’re setting up for the final event, but I’m always so satisfied by the climax of the novel that I’m willing to forgive the slow scenes it took to get us there.

This is probably telling of exactly the sort of anime fan that I am, but some months ago I sat in with a friend on a few episodes each of Jujutsu Kaisen and Dead Mount Death Play smack in the middle of arcs which I had very little context for, and my takeaway was that JJK was engaging on a visual and nerdy worldbuilding level but otherwise mostly a bit boring… and DMDP was absolutely my kind of bullshit and something that I knew I needed to watch more of, honestly more than Baccano! had been. Does it lack its elder sibling series' tight and elegant plot construction, excellent production values and effortless cool? Yes. And yet even in bits and pieces, there was a holistic thematic cohesion woven through the disparate yet endlessly entertaining characters and wry approach to storytelling and worldbuilding which leaves audience and cast alike half-in and half-out of the dark in many different ways was genuinely gripping to me. I mean, it's Narita. The man knows how to write a character-driven world-in-chaos clusterfuck like no-one else. (Fate/Strange Fake also seems to have this going on, and by god, that pilot movie has me so excited even as a true casual among Nasuverse enthusiasts.)
As for what ostensibly tries this sort of storytelling style and fails miserably on every conceivable level… wow, did Ishura fucking suck. Like, it managed to fuck up the 3D modelling of its wyvern characters in a way that deeply offended me both as an anime 3D CG defender *and* an inveterate thirster after cute scalie dudes, and that was actually among the least of my complaints whilst watching what little I could stomach of it. Absolutely dreadful.

As a 20+ yr veteran anime watcher, Baccano is my favorite anime. That being said you've gotta be okay with nonlinear storytelling (reminds me of Momento in a way), a large ensemble cast, and being confused about the plot for about half of the season. Once all the plot beats come together though and you see how they all fit and intertwine it's 🤌

I do think the presentation can be confusing, but I think that understanding the plot isn't hard. explaining it succinctly is though because of how much is going on, and I can say that pay offs indeed come. I think you're too hard on this one, but it also isn't a show or manga for everyone. if you don't like this kind of story, then you wouldn't like it. it is very disorganized and chaotic by nature and can be hard to follow of you aren't preinclined to like it

Ok ngl I don't really like the Baccano anime very much. It actually puts me to sleep makin it LITERALLY impossible to properly finish even a single ep normally(the only ep I really liked was the extra special they did after the main series). Durarara however I loved immensely in the 1st season & even in seasons I didn't love as much I still generally enjoyed mainly due to the characters I was alr attached to & I saw it to the finish really satisfied. Everythin u've ever stated bout Dura I've completely agreed wit even here. I'll say when it comes to this I wasn't necessarily impressed the 1st season(I'll say production doesn't help in comparison or on its own) but I'll say it seems to be pickin up in the 2nd season & I hope it really does if it comes back. It IS funny that when he was thinkin up a new series he thought "REVERSE ISEKAI THAT'D BE GREAT" lol. Phantom did seem like he was more there to act as a way to gain further understandin of the characters through interrogation but I never thought it was for Narita jus as much or even more than the audience lol. On a side note did u know there's a sequel to Dura called D SH? idk wut the "SH" means but based on the main title it might also have to do wit the sound of a vehicle. I jus hope that gets adapted 1 day cus I don't like readin that much & u really put me off tryin to even if I learn jp lol. I wonder how Fate/Strange Fake will be handled since it's not by the team that did Baccano or Dura but based off the special it'll at least look cool so there's that. DMDP when watchin it doesn't seem that confusin at all(at least to me) but the way u described it def makes me realize how crazy it actually is lol. I'd say it feels easier than the other 2 so far so maybe someone could start off wit this. iirc unlike the other 2 this 1 is a manga 1st so that might play a part in some ways but idk. It's ok & I don't regret seein it either.

Bea, are you ever gonna get vn pilled? Are all these mediocre seasonal anime worth it? For me no, maybe 1 show every year i'll watch and forget about soon after. Its too disposable, it never goes hard enough, everything feels watered down for the tv format.
You dont get that with vn, its the most concetrated, focused, and complete experience in the medium. You said in some video long ago you read saya no uta? (all the way through?) That story imo just crushes anything you'll find in anime. An irreplaceable experience.
Dont you only want stuff of that caliber again? I know I do, thats why ive read 100 of these things and counting. Its probably hard to even approach something so high commitment but i'll give you advice you cant get elsewhere.
Skip Fate stay night and skip muv luv, muv luv especially is bloated beyond belief, and Fate is very slow and forces you into a bad first route. Try out little discussed classics like Cross Channel or Swan Song to see what vn are capable of. Cross Channel admittedly is also slow at the start but its not a 70 hour behemoth like Fate. I consider both of these better than Saya if that says anything to you.
