As a Thai, I don’t think the word ‘Farang’ is used to look down foreigners at all. It’s just used to identify the race of caucasoid. That’s it. Besides, most people in countryside, they can’t understand English, so they often embarrassed giggle and laugh because they don’t understand your questions. You might wonder why they giggle and laugh. It’s because of Thai’s nature. People try to make the chilling atmosphere between others to avoid being awkward, so they usually laugh, giggle and smile. On the other hand, westerners who are not native English speakers they might not care about your feeling and walk away.😅 This is only my opinion.

There is no such race as caucasoid, unless you read unscientific papers from a century ago on phrenology. Westerners and caucasoids are not the same thing, because one exists and the other doesn't exist. There is no scientific data that shows there are human races.
It doesn't mean foreigner at all like the narrator said, because Thais don't use the word to refer to Chinese foreigners, Filipino foreigners, African foreigners, Arab foreigners, foreigners from the different culture groups in Myanmar or India. They only use it to refer to whites.

It's always a joy seeing your vlogs, I only recently discovered your channel, and I am going through the older vlogs but decided to watch this one, so I could leave a comment, my mother is from buriram and moved to Sweden a long time ago and married my father, so I grew up outside Thailand, however I did spend a couple of summers in buriram during my childhood and your vlogs bring back some very fond memories of said childhood.

By far the most down to earth vlog about Thai life I think I have seen. My life in Thailand has only just started this year after yearly visits since 2016. Immersion is definitely the way and the rural style is so cool , just a fair old learning and adjusting process to work through over the coming months and years.

When I first came to the village it was funny. I'm the only farang around and when I took the kids to school the other kids would stare a lot. After being here 14yrs I am just normal to them. Last year I was having a beer at the local village shop where I sit sometimes a little girl approached me. She looked at my face and said 'mi contact mai?' She had never seen anyone with blue eyes. I laughed and replied 'farang mi ta si fah'. I don't mind being the only farang about. The local people have never caused me any grief and are always polite and friendly.

Thanks for another wonderful vlog Damo and Ryan! I really enjoyed seeing a bit of the town/city; there's always more to places than you think! Those cafes looked quite nice! Great tips about learning the language, I'm doing a sort of immersion (as best I can in my small Canadian city), so far it seems to be going well. I always try to listen to any Thai in your videos, without looking at the subtitles, to see how much I can understand. Much love ❤

You always manage to produce fascinating vlogs Ryan. I love the fact that in a short vlog you manage to catch the true essence of rural life in the Buriram area of Thailand. I love the much slower pace, the cows trundling along the road, the wildlife, the plants and trees etc. Those turkeys are big boys now, isn't it amazing that you hatched them from eggs. I think Damo enjoyed being pampered at the salon. Otis's education is coming on a treat, as he loves to learn and have a little joke along the way. God bless all 4 of you 🙏😃❤️

The word "farang" is assumed to be derived from Arabs, Iranians, Persians who came to Ayutthaya in the past. To call the Europeans who came to live in Ayutthaya as Franky and have transmitted this language to the people of Siam. Which Siamese people would like to say short words for ease of communication Therefore, it has been called
    " Farang"since the past.

I've spent some time now in Thailand and my Thai wife is also the same.
Thai people smile and laugh when they are nervous. They smile and laugh then they are embarrassed. They smile and laugh then they are humiliated. They smile and laugh when they're offended.
All in all, they smile and laugh. And you have to look at the very very subtle differences as well as learn to read the situation.
There's even that need to learn to read the nuance in the things they speak - Thai people are never, ever direct. They never say they don't like something or ever say no. So reading reluctance is a big skill we Westerners must learn, as we are so used to people speaking directly and plainly, and we are much less concerned with offending in favour of truth and clarity.
