  • Very rarely do you meet someone who grew up as the only foreign kid in a rural village in north eastern Thailand. Whilst he may not look it, Chris Chaffe is as much Thai as he is Australian. And this is his story…

Children's Brains are wired for language better, I'm from India but my mom was from Nepal. I bounced around 3 different regions and also Nepal till I was 11 years old so almost every 2 years I had to learn a different language or dialect. I remember at 6 being in an Indian boarding school and one teacher assigning me a buddy because I spoke English and India's mains language Hindi but the buddy spoke only Hindi and his regional dialect ( Bhojpuri) the boarding school was in North east of India ( shillong ) where locals spoke their own languages. I think it was just 3 months and he was speaking English well enough , for about a month we use to be inseparable and I spoke only in Hindi with him but I remember telling him the English word for a lot of things. fast forward next year and I found myself in the capital of Nepal ( Kathmandu) and I remember on the second day my aunt and dad had sat me down and explained that I was in another country with a different language called Nepali. My dad teaching my my first few words. I clearly remember that after 6 months someone made a comment that we ( my sister and I ) speak more fluently than my Dad, ( my dad was from India ) seems adults pick up slow and have problems with pronunciations. By 2 years we were almost his translators whenever we went out. There are lot of permutations and combination. I'm 42 now and have been in a relationships with a Thai lady for 8 years. Also for the past 10 years I have moved to another state and region of India but I never picked up the local language, I understand it but as I don't need to use it professionally I found no use to actively seek it. also I have really not picked up Thai at all just a few words. I've been meaning to take it seriously to read and write it but I think at my age I'll be just like my Dad with Thai as he was to Nepali lol.

I still remember initially, the thai teacher, in Singapore ask,
      ‘Have you eaten’…and I don’t understand.
When one has the interest to learn another language, one can learn sooner or later.
      I am still in Singapore.
Thailand 🇹🇭 is nearby, no need to ‘retire’ there. Unlike Westerners, all we need is 2 hrs by plane to reach there. Singaporean can have 30 days there and extend another 30.
      Last dec-jan was 45 days.
p.s. You can visit my friend’s/my place at Nakhon Phanom if you want to…free of charge.

Singaporean is just a messed up identity conflicts. Y'all don't know whether ur British subjects descendants or a freaking Chinese identity. Even when speaking English, typical Filipino speaks better standardised English than BS slang-ish Manglish practised in Singapore. I studied your country's history, if the Maley-majority people were to act like Bamar-majority after they gained Independence for their British Burma(now Myanmar 🇲🇲), they expelled every single immigrants even when the foreign people(Chinese n Tamils) brought by the British already equals with the native population but still mass expulsions happened. But as for Singapore, you have some Maley leader merely sacrificed their own Maley native island for immigrants who dun wanna integrate into local dominant Southeast Asian native culture instead of expelled/force assimilate them to their ancestral home or into local dominant native culture. Bamar people of Myanmar did it n British/China/India at that time were dissatisfied to receive their people back but they can't do a thing cuz all countries eventually will gained Independence through decolonisation period n it's bloody Southeast Asian natives region of Thai-Maley-Bamar-Filipino-Indo people at that time so they can't do much. If U wanna talk bout my country, Thailand, no need . Cuz my country never get colonised by Western power n we have bunch of Thai people with Chinese blood but since their grandparents get force assimilated, they are now fully one of us like the white people in this vid. The way they speak, think, aspiration, culture same like us. One Thai people with 1 unified authentically embedded in heart Thai love. Singapore, what are you? English? Chinese? Tamil? Maley? Three of them are foreign to ASEAN, only 1 of them is native of Southeast Asian region.

One explanation for the 'personality' change between the two languages, I think it's associated with the cultures of the people speaking the language.
Thai people are normally more laid back in a way that is more playful and therefore when speaking Thai it would be natural to seem more playful in a way of speaking. I find it also with tonal languages that the way of expressing oneself is also that of a more child like way of speech as you need to go into higher ranges of speech often.
Once a certain level of proficiency is achieved, I believe that the natural response system kicks in and we match the culture and feel of the atmosphere of speech. This is how I see it from my experience. I live in Hong Kong and my 'personality' changes in a very similar way at times as Hong Kongers can also be quite playful and immature in a good way when speaking.
Great video and channel Paddy Thai -- I will be in BKK in early April and hope to see you on the street and you can give me some tips for my Thai learning. haha

I had a somewhat similar experience of language learning. I became friends with a kid who just happened to be Deaf, and by end of the year I was fluent. There’s no chance now that I could learn with the ease I did as a kid.
Also, the long hair looks fantastic on him!

Hi Chris (บักหล่าคิด) thanks for being straightforward and speak up for us; Thai. No body could explain ours;Thai and yours;Australian or other foreigners in the way they think about Thailand as good as you are, because you experienced and grew up in Thai in such a rural area without being a mixed-race kid in a Thai family like others, but ur were here by chance, so it's very rare to happen in this case. For me I think this point can turn out ur life in the future if u want to do a RUclips channel u can represent Thailand in the way others can not do and a very special way. Thanks again for speaking up about Thailand to foreigners' sight. So that's how they want to explore more about Thailand and we as a Thai ''Welcome to Thailand a land of smile" come here have a rest and relax and enjoy your time and don't forget to respect our people and our land too. Thank u again บักหล่าคิด ตัวแทนหมู่บ้าน :=)

Why, thanks Maricel. I moved to Australia at the age of 7 and speak English fluently. Dunno if there's much of a market for that in terms of RUclips content though. :(

Now I know why Chris speak perfectly Thai and Esan. I admire your ability to live in two worlds. But I am sure there will be some reverse culture shock. Paddy should have asked him about that. Thanks for correcting the myths people have about Thailand.

People who think that those myths are true, I have been to Thailand many times and I come for the food, culture and the amazing places, I have never been into a bar or anything like that, but I don’t drink alcohol so it’s not my idea of a fun environment, I would much rather walk around a night market and eat great street food. I love Thailand been coming since a girlfriend suggested we go because she still goes there, that was in 1995 and she is 60 now and still loves it, we are still friend’s all these years later.

OMG, I am pretty good at identifying the accent of the person's origin, but this Aussie/Thai completely fooled me if I were to close my eyes and listen to him speak Thai central & Isaan dialect. Good on him. 😀👍

Great interview Paddy! It's amazing to learn a new language. And it's true that switching between languages also carries another variation of one's personality.
I can speak German, Spanish, English & enough Thai. And I've noticed in myself, in a scale of seriousness carried in each of those languages, I would say; Thai is the most layback language, secondly, English, thirdly Spanish and lastly German at the highest level of seriousness.
    Keep up the great content!
